moreOpen Question: When is it Time to Stop Giving it One More Chance?
I'm a 28 year old professional (doctor), or I was. My other half is 39, and worked as a chef in a very high-end hotel restaurant. But he's also Portuguese so, in our wisdom, we decided to emigrate to Portugal in the understanding he would be the breadwinner while I got to grips with the language.
We're now 6 months in. The weather is wonderful, the culture is great, the people too, those I can understand at least , BUT my other half just isn't cutting it. He has finally, after 5 months of nagging found 2 days a week working in a hotel so far away it is barely worth the petrol money, and does nothing else.
The 5 days he doesn't work he gets up at 1 or 2 in the afternoon, trying to get him up earlier results in strop & bad mood for the day - its just not worth it. He then sits on the sofa in front of the tv or on his computer the whole day, and I cant remember the last time he came to bed at the same time as me, no matter what time I sit up til or how many times I ask.
Maybe I was naive... things were similar in England, just not so drastic... but he assured me it was because the weather was so bad he just didn't see anything attractive about going out to do anything. Now we're here, it's mostly sunny... and he's worse. I have to actually nag a 39 year old man to have a wash more than once a week, and then suffer the resentment he bears for asking him to for the next hour or so. We have three dogs, which he wanted, who only ever go out with me. We have a house, which was his grandmothers, that needs so much work doing it still rains inside one of the rooms on bad days. I do all the housework - fair enough he works two days a week, I don't mind the majority being mine- but I didnt expect that to include everything from dealing with the chickens, to our dogs, the cleaning, cooking (on two hobs because the rest of the cooker doesnt work!) the washing to having to make him wash himself, all while worrying about what exactly we're going to eat tomorrow because we are so strapped for cash. And now his bright idea is to have a baby???!!!
We split up two years ago for around four months because I felt he no longer appreciated me, no longer valued my opinions etc - well, this time its worse tenfold. I almost feel like an accessory in his life. He refused to left me drive the car the other day because he knew the way and I didn't, and when I said it was only 5 minutes away, he could just give me directions and that I wanted to drive he threw a strop and insisted on just driving us home instead.
I'm not a stupid person & I do love him deeply but I'm at the limits of what I as a person can deal with. Living in a country where you do not speak the language better than say your average 4 year old is a very isolating experience. He hasn't kept his end of the deal, so now my money has run out I cant afford any more language lessons, we cant afford to socialize much if at all, he states he doesn't know how to teach me and it's... not easy, to put it mildly.
I reached the final straw over the silly macho-controlling car driving nonsense... and we had an argument about things, but at least that got it into the open. He says he doesn't know whats the matter, he just feels sort of absent and he keeps thinking he needs to change tomorrow but then the next day just hits the snooze on the alarm clock again. He also says now Ive threatened to walk out it will all be different; that he'll change because he has to. But, I truly dont know... I feel like we were here before but it was ten times less than it is now. Perhaps enough is enough? Perhaps I'm just really feeling every little problem because I AM isolated and not working and in a strange environment. It could be as he wonders- he's depressed - but even on wondering that his reaction isn't to go to the doctors here to resolve it... it's more of an excuse. And one he used before when we split up over his lack of appreciation for me as a person. This year, for my birthday I wasnt expecting a present as we had no money, but he made no effort to make it a special day what so ever; i still got up about 5 hours before he did, he took about an hour to wake up the finally remember to say happy birthday, not even a stupid homemade card or a silly song with a lit candle, or a suggestion to go for a nice walk... nothing to make the day special.
I just feel I've given this relationship every chance - we moved here for him to be home and for us to have a better lifestyle. I love him very much - I wouldn't have come this far if I didn't... how do you decide when its time to jack it in?We've been together for 6 years...

moreResolved Question: What do I do with my ex and my new girlfriend (sorry long post)?
Hello, I am in a very difficult and complicated situation in my life right now and any ideas or quick advise would be really appreciated. I was in a long term relationship with my ex for 13 years and the relationship had not been going doing well at all. I have a child with her who is 10 years old and so we stayed together because of my son and because I did not want to destroy the family but I was living really unhappy for a long time, it was not an ordinary relationship. We lived like brother and sister and constantly urged and often in front of our son. Our Love life was nonexistent, we probably made love about once a year and we lived like that for years at the age of 33. Every relationship is difficult I agree with that but mine was just roller-coaster of confusion. She is black and I am white, and because we have a mixed raced son she indirectly suggests we get back together for the sake of our son because she feels that a child like ours in this society will find life very hard without his two parents being together. I am very tired of this guilt trip she’s plays on me. The pressure that I received from friends her family and general society was very hard, because of our differences in race, but I love my son dearly and would do anything for him.
I was the bread winner if the house, she never worked since our son was born because of his special needs which is his ADHD and she uses it to claim benefits and housing paid. I always lived in her house in her rules. I paid for all maintenance and living costs while she dominated me mentally and had no rights to where I lived with her. I could never go home unless she was in already as she never gave me keys and she did not want to caught with the housing. I really don't know how I could be stupid to live like that for so long but when you love someone you will do everything. I am a very religious person and have passed this on to my son, I have always told her that she needs to give herself to god and have him in her heart but in just goes in one ear and comes out of the other. Getting custody of my son will be a difficult option now as she is so accustomed to living on benefits that she would end up taking him away. I have never know somebody like her, a constant life drama that never seems to end. During these years we moved more than 9 times, because see could never settle anywhere an never happy. It was a financial burden and a constant worry I had for my son.
I have now brought my own home and I broke up with her this year, as I met somebody who was a friend for over a year before we got together. She is from Brazil and 10 years younger than me and we have been together for 8 months now. We have a lot in common my parents are from Portuguese origin and so I can speak both languages and feel that I am more suitably matched to her culturally an spiritually. Although I did not love the mother of my son and neither did she love me I now know that I should have finished the relationship properly before I started another and it did not end well. I wanted to be happy because I knew I could not live like that anymore. Now the problem is that although that I am no longer with my ex she's making things very difficult for me and my girlfriend, she does not let me have a normal relationship. Weekends are very difficult to be together because my ex always makes me feel ashamed and guilty for what I am doing and so I'm mostly alone with my son on weekends because she does not want my gf around my son and says that she will kill her if she finds out she meets my son. My ex is always making things complicated and it feels like I have to hide my gf, she calls my girlfriend a whore and says that he only wants to be with me because she wants a passport to stay in the country as she is Brazilian but she also has an Italian passport which means she would not need any other passport to stay and work in the UK anyway.
In the beginning our relationship was great but now we are always arguing and always stopping and then starting again. She’s feels that I don’t love her and wants me to prove it and one way of doing so is by moving in together which I have advised her that I am not ready yet. She is really affectionate but is also very jealous and always thinks that I am cheating. She jumps the gun whenever i dont ring her back straight away and gets really emotional if i am tired and fall asleep and dont call her back. Could it be that she because she is younger than me? 10 years difference might be a big gap right.
Part of me is letting this go on because I did really want my relationship with my ex to work. I don't play around with peoples feeling and don't cheat with other women as I would not want that for myself. I know that I need to firm up on my situation but having 2 women constantly demanding from me is taking its toll to make a solid decision. I want to be with my new gf but if things cant change I am not afraid to be on myown, because the most important things right now is my sanity and my son.So sorry for the long post but I needed to express myself the best I could. Thanks Mark

moreResolved Question: Should I learn Portuguese or Spanish?
I'm interested in both languages but for different reasons. Part of the reason I want to learn Portuguese is that I'm a bossa nova player and learning Portuguese would more easily allow me to explore the genre in depth, as well as providing me with a useful language as I'm also a samba drummer and a massive fan of anything Brazilian in general, including films.
But I do have friends who are themselves Spanish speaking, and so I was also considering learning this so I could at least speak to them a little in Spanish. But it just seems that everyone picks Spanish to learn as a foreign language and I really don't want to be boring and pick an obvious language.
So, which should I learn?

moreResolved Question: Convincing my parents to let me teach English abroad?
Ok, I'm currently a junior at a 4-year university studying Anthropology, and my parents are really concerned that I won't be able to find a job after graduation in 2013. Lately I've been having growing interest in teaching English abroad in South America, Europe, or the Middle East, but here are some issues that could prevent me from doing so.
- My grades have never been great (I spent last semester getting myself out of academic probation, now I'm just barely over a 2.0), so I'm constantly stressed 24/7 to make good grades to finally score a decent GPA (2.5 or over). I fear that my GPA will be the biggest hindrance when I will finally fill out an application to teach English abroad.
- I've joked with my parents about me living/working abroad at one point, and they shot it down, thinking that there's 0% of me finding any work abroad, and have already determined that I'll graduate and find work here in this state (Kansas) and live here the rest of my life. I get the feeling they don't trust me too well with the decisions I make, and I don't blame them, especially for some I've made in the past...
- Experience. I've had no experience in teaching, at all.
For the longest time now, I've had a great passion in traveling and learning all the different cultures that exists, and I feel as if teaching English abroad could help experience that passion. I also have just as big of a passion with languages, hence why I am currently fluent in Spanish and French, and at intermediate level with Brazilian Portuguese, and I would love to teach them English.
I absolutely love what I'm studying, but I fear I won't be able to find work upon graduation, and even if I did, it most likely won't involve being immersed in a different culture. I do have plans to attend graduate school, but I want to take a year or two off to hopefully teach abroad, then come back and apply.
I feel as if teaching English abroad would help me in so many ways possible -- I know I won't get rich from it, but I want to experience life abroad in another culture. Perhaps you can think of this option as an "easy way out" but I feel as if I have no other option, and it's something I could see myself doing after I graduate. The only issues are my grades, convincing my parents, and experience (or lack thereof).
What do you think? Is this possible with low grades, and how can I convince my folks? Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

I speak four languages fluently (bilingual English/Portuguese, fluent to semi-fluent French and Spanish), am living and working abroad, am self-sufficient financially and in terms of general looking-after (cooking, washing, shopping, so forth) and generally considered sweet by women I know. I am also a nice guy, who doesn't degrade women (unless they deserve it), try to control them or play mindgames. Generally just a regular nerdy, slightly shy guy.
However, while my success rate with actually meeting women is improving, I'm still getting stuck in the friend zone. I can't even get their phone numbers, and constantly get shut down for dates. Unlike before, however, they're nice about it, not snobbish or stuck-up. However, it's still enough to make me wonder if I'm undateable for some reason.
Bear in mind the situation used to be my own fault: first because I was a nerdy wimp, and then because I was a dickhead who badmouthed women and ran away from commitment. Now, however, I've acknowledged and sought to correct all my flaws. With the two current women I'm interested in (trying to choose) I have done absolutely nothing wrong, as far as I can tell. I was nice, sweet, genuine, and didn't try to push it too fast. I didn't even aim "above my league", which I was guilty of in the past.
I'm not looking for sex; I'm just ready for something serious, and I am looking to date and do things "the proper way". So I'd like you ladies to tell me if I may be missing some key ingredient that would make me dateable. And don't say "act confident and just be yourself", because I'm doing both and it's still not working :)
Thanks!
moreResolved Question: I would like to ask this:?
I am wanting to speak to my friend on FB who is from Brasil.
And my QUESTION is....how do i say this in Brasilian Portuguese?
"You should come over.....it's lovely over here at the moment. Almost as warm as Brasil....
But...if you come over...we should go out and I would love to make some new friends..I have never been to Sao Luis. I know it's a beautiful place....my father has been there with his work. but he has been to many places in Brasil....so maybe he did not get to know it as well as you do....
Here in Perth we have many things to do and to see and 2 real big shopping malls and we have many fantastic stores - Peacock and H and M sell really good cheap clothes!! We do a lot of shoping there.
I love to shop their with my sisters.
We could go to eat and take in a show to, there are some lovely theatres here - the shows here are very different and if you understand english - even better!!
But not the cinema - they sell sweet popcorn.....can you imagine? Crazy. Not very good...I prefer salt with mine!
I will give you my mobile telephone number when you come across and you can give me a call....i could come down there...or you could come up here and stay for a weekend...my mothers house is big enough for an extra person...
though I hope you like dogs...my mother has 2 Pugs...horrible things.....but...we have to put up with them I am afraid..
if you want you can come to one of my classes...i teach different languages......sorry...but no Portuguese...but French and a little German to.....mostly to children......though i do make some extra money by teaching adults and i can charge up to £20 a hour per person....so....sometimes i teach a class of up to 8 adults at a time.....you should teach Portuguese over here...and make lots of money...haahaaa
we live outside Perth and we have a small field to...plenty of space to run around in. I can drive to and have my own small car which gets me around everywhere!!
lets talk sometime.....and you can try your english on me....and we can swap some stories.....
will you be coming over soon? tell me some stories of when you were in Dunblane...i would love to hear some......and maybe we can swap some pictures to...
My SECOND PART OF THE QUESTION IS: I also want to tell her what I did over the weekend, so how can I say in Brasilian Portuguese:
"yes....I was busy over the weekend. On Friday I went out to a party at my friends house.....it was crazy...so many people.....on Saturday...I slept all day and went to the cinema and I saw the new Harry Potter movie. On Sunday I travelled down to my friends house and had some good food and wine...it was lovely here...almost as hot as Brasil, we sat in the garden and just talked and talked. You know the restaurant in Glasgow? I love it.......and the staff are so good....I loved the caipirinha...when you come over again...we should go...and party! I liked the chicken heart...but when we were there they were serving beef heart.......very strange.....but i really loved the smoked sausages they had there....i ate so much....i almost burst....
I looked at your pictures of the theatre...its looks good....I would love to see that....and your dress is lovely...
maybe we could swap MSN names? so we can chat?"
end of question.
I am looking for some assistance in translating that for a friend i am talking to and Google Translate just makes her laugh.

Just trying to translate one phrase from portuguese. Thank ya!
moreResolved Question: Why do women keep going on about how attractive Spanish and Italian are as languages...?
But not German? I even text girls in Spanish sometimes because they love it, but I don't get the same reaction from German (I'm teaching myself German atm, already taught myself a good level of Spanish and Portuguese). Why though? To me, the different languages in print are just that, nothing more.
Why do they love looking at Spanish, Portuguese or Italian text but not German?Women from England, if that matters...Pois, nao falo portugues fluidamente mas bastante para vivir alí e aprender máis.

"Yes. I work as a translator. But I mostly teach young adults in class.
I think the best way to learn English is to actually live in Scotland. And really experience the language. You said you lived in Dunblane?
Well. There is the perfect chance to keep learning English. And if you have somewhere to stay even better.
I hope to go and see my father in Natal about September or October. I hope to avoid Heathrow airport when I travel though. Its to big and confusing. I think I will go via Frankfurt. I do not know yet.
How do you travel here? to Scotland?
I have been twice in the last year to see my father - and it was good to go there. I had a great time and I nearly stayed for good. He has a big apartment there and works for a large construction company.
You should look me up when you come over. Myself and my 3 sisters. Rafaela, Bia and Vilma. We could all go party and have a fun time!!
I know a real good Brasilian restaurant in Glasgow - you would feel at home!!! It is run by a man from Sao Paolo - and the food is good to!
And we can get a taxi home.
keep in touch..

moreResolved Question: How did the spanish language become the dominant native tongue in much of the Americas?
I know that the spaniards colonized latin america(well except for Brazil, colonized by the Portuguese) but how were they successful in establishing the spanish language as the majority language in much of Latin America whether they intentionally meant to do it or not? Was it because of the growing white and mixed-race population at the time? One language "expert" said it was. If so why did the the mixed-race population eventually adopt spanish instead of one of the indigenous languages.Or if there were that adopted an indigenous language then how did spanish spread in the colonies? Were the conversions to catholicism mainly in Spanish? I heard in the beginning it wasn't because spaniards didn't want to cause confusion. I know I've been reading much of this information but it is still confusing. I find this interesting and want to learn more. Was it because a variety of the reasons I mentioned?
Nobody has to really give big detailed answers. But if you can go ahead please.
moreResolved Question: Is there a bookshop in London or Surrey that sells foreign language fiction etc?
I'd really, really, really like to get my hands on a copy of O Alquemista by Paula Coelho. The English-language one is really easy to come by but the Portuguese edition is impossible to find!
Does anyone know of a bookshop where I can pick it up? It would be most perfect gift for a friend of mine...
moreResolved Question: Geography or French/Italian for last GCSE choice?
should i choose geography or French/italian for my last GCSEs option?
I'm an amazing linguist and lots of people recommend me doing another language (im fluent in Portuguese Brazil*1st language since im Brazilian*, English and Spanish) so as im very good at languages i thought i should do another language which would be French or Italian.
BUT then the school recommends everyone to do one Humanities (Geography, History Economics..) and i can definitely not do history or economics (because im veeeryy bad at both) so i thought maybe geography since im not so bad at it but i still DONT like it.
As ive started modeling like my mother did, many of my friends recommend me doing a language in case i ever go to another country to model.
I honestly dont see why geography would help me in any way in my life since all the things i like and am good at are things that are more artistic. Like in the future i either want to continue being a model, an interior designer or a fashion designer. Those three things are all the careers that i like the most, so i really dont think geography is going to be useful.
If this helps somehow, this were my other 3 GCSEs options:
Art
Textile
Spanish
and maths, english and science are compulsory.
So What do you guys think? Would geography be useful in any way for any of the careers im interested in? Which one of them should i choose Geo or French/Italian?

moreResolved Question: Which to learn: Portugal Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese?
Okay, so I really love the Portuguese language and people.
I'm thinking about learning Portuguese, and I'm really drawn to the Brazilian version.
If I was to learn from Teach Yourself Brazilian Portuguese, would it be okay for holiday's to Portugal too or would they be offended that I didn't learn their version. Is it like British English and American English difference's, or smaller. Any advice would be appreciated.
moreResolved Question: UK driving license theory test in portuguese?
I am trying to help a friend who wants to start driving but do not speak very good English. From when I took my test I know that there is the option of taking the theory test in a different language, Portuguese being one of them. I don't think the practical would be a problem as translators can be used, the only problem is we can't seem to be able to find practising resources (for theory) in Portuguese. Can you help?
