Open Question: How come the Native Korean women don't have curves, unlike the Korean-Americans?

What I mean is, how come the Korean women born AND raised in Korea are like stick-thin/tall and have no curves unlike the Koreans born and raised in America(the korean-americans)? This is not an offense. Just jealous of their thinness(!?) Most young Koreans girls I see in Korea - in subways, streets, etc., are sooo thin with like zero fat. I'm not saying ALL but most YOUNG women/students. It seems like they don't even gain weight although they eat McDonalds or other fried foods, which most of the young people are starting to eat these days... more

Resolved Question: Interested in living in South Korea. What do I need to do?

Hello, I'm really interested in the Korean culture[Language, fashion, food, etc.] and would like to eventually live there some time in the future. However, I do have a few questions pertaining to how I should go about everything. For one thing, how are their immigration laws? What type of job will be able to support me other than being an English instructor.[I'm really not much of a teacher ^^;] and so on. I'd also like to know what degrees I can take in the US that will allow me to work there as well. However, as much as possible, I'd like to go to school in Korea. So how might I be able to get the chance to study abroad? Any scholarships available? more

Open Question: Gift for a Chinese teacher?

I've done a little googling and yahoo answer searching, but have found nothing specific to my question. I am a first year Chinese language student in an American college and I'd like to give my teacher a thank you gift before this semester is over. What is a traditional gift in China for a teacher? I know it's should be something useful, fruits are popular, and don't give anything in a set of four. Would something like a basketful of clementines be nice, with a pretty red bow on it? Maybe some Korean pears? My teacher often speaks of her hometown. She is from Tai'an in the Shandong province. I've read that the flower of the crepe myrtle tree is the city flower. Is there any taboo for giving young trees in China? I am also thinking of some sort of dish from Shandong cuisine. Is there anything I might be able to cook up, or would I be better off finding an authentic restaurant and ordering something from there? Is it weird to give food in China? Am I better off getting a gift card? Any other ideas? Any help is appreciated!@ frenchie waffles: i think you are right. a tree might be expensive. i dont want to give anything too expensive and have her feel like she has to reciprocate. @virgil: i appreciate your input, but i dont think any romantic confusion would happen in this case, lol! some more things: 1. i would LOVE it if input came from people who actually know a bit about Chinese culture. no offense but if you don't then it wouldn't be anymore helpful than anything i could think up myself. 2. i know asians seem to be all over herbs and supplements. is there any that is common as a gift, like ginseng? more

Voting Question: Why do southeast Asians and Chinese look nothing like the Korean and Japanese?

Hi, everyone. I am half native Japanese, a quarter Japanese Ainu, and a quarter native South Korean. I have looked online, and I have noticed so many of the same questions, "Which Asian do I look like?" This is becoming so annoying. First off, to the southeast Asians and to the Chinese who always say, "Do I look Japanese", "Do I look Korean?" really pisses me off. First off, you can't compare all Asians as the same. All different Asian countries have different ancestry. Southeast Asians like Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia while the maritime section consists of Brunei, East Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Singapore have different facial features, cultures, cuisines, personalities from the Northeast Asians. Why the hell are southeast Asians trying to compare themselves to the Japanese and the Korean. First off, the southeast Asian ancestry originates from southern China and Taiwan through Austronesian people. Southeast Asian people have large, round eyes, flatter, lower noses, darker skin, and no hair on the body and/or face. Also, what is with the attitude. I have so many friends who are Korean and Japanese who are so generous. When I talk to southeast Asians or Chinese, they are so mean to my people. Do you know why? I don't even either. Anyways, the Korean and the Japanese have completely different facial features. We have taller, straighter noses, smaller, crescent-shaped eyes, full, thick hair on the body and face, taller body and bone structures than the southeast Asians and the Chinese. The people of Korea are said to originate from the Ural-Altaic tribe which is located in Siberia. Other people even originated from Mongolia and Central Asia. The Japanese are said to have branched from similar people who originated from both the Koreans and the Ainu who have a unidentified ancestry. The Japanese and the Korean are said to have very gentle eyes. Other than facial features, the personalities are very noticeable. The Korean but especially the Japanese have a very quiet, generous personality. Trust me, I know. I have been living in Nagoya, Japan for about 20 years now. Other than that, our cuisines are much different. The southeast Asians and the Chinese tend to have food that is I guess stir-fried. Your rice is also very different. Southeast Asian and Chinese rice is un-sticky, and I don't really know why. The Korean and the Japanese have sticky rice usually served with soup, sticky rice, fish, and side dish rather it is a few or maybe even one. The reason why I am comparing the southeast Asians and the Chinese is because the southeast Asians originated from southern China and there are many overseas Chinese living in Southeast Asia. The reason why Korea and Japan look different from the Chinese and the southeast Asians is because of different ancestry origins and taste. Also, if you go to any country the northern people look different from the southern people. The southern people migrated south, so they formed larger eyes, lower, flatter noses, shorter body and bone structures, and either no hair on the body and/or face while the northern people had lighter skin, smaller, crescent-shaped eyes, taller, straighter noses, taller body and bone structures, full, thick hair on body and face, because the north had a colder climate, so the northerners had hair like it was clothing. If you think about this, it does make sense. Now that I am pretty much finished, please to all the southeast Asians and the Chinese stop pretending to be Korean or Japanese. Your people have originated from a different location and origin. Your people look different, act different, and have different tastes and personalities. I am not trying to be negative here, but you southeast Asians and Chinese are disgracing your own backgrounds. Be proud of what and who you are. even in North America, the Native Americans look pretty different from the South Americans and the Central Americans. This is because, people from other continents migrated here and there. For example, a large portion of Latin Europeans, Middle-Easterners, and other people migrated to the Americas. This probably explains why the Hispanics look pretty similar to the Latin Europeans and the Middle-Easterners. In Africa, it is pretty self-explanatory. They originated from their own countries. There are also different people in Europe too. There are the Anglo-Saxons (the United Kingdom, Scandinavia), the Latin Europeans (French, Italian, Spanish, Portugese), and the Eastern Europeans (Russians, Slovakians). The Greek, I guess they would be a mix between the Latin Europeans, Meditteranean, and possibly the Middle-Easterners. The Australians and New Zealanders have several ancestries. Currently, most people have European ancestry, but the natives are said to have migrated from China or Taiwan like the Southeast Asians or the Polynesians, most likely the Austronesian people, but I have to disagree. The Australians, New Zealanders, and the Papua New Guineans have different facial features from the southeast Asians and the polynesians, but that is just my opinion. Antarctica, Lol. Lastly, Asia. The middle-Easterners are said to have migrated from I guess the middle-east, but several Europeans especially the meditteranean mixed with them especially the Greek, but also the Italians, French, and the Spanish. Oh, by the way, the Hispanics from the Americas are said to originate from across the Bering Strait which is between Siberia and Alaska. The people in the Arctic are said to have the same DNA as the Koreans and the Japanese which I could believe. The south Asians, the Indians are said to be part of the Indo-Aryan from the Middle-East, and even Europeans. The Central Asians have mixed ancestry whether it is Mongolian, Middle-Easterns, or even the Eastern Europeans. The Mongolians look much like I guess the Japanese and the Korean, because Mongolia is a country up north past China. The southeast Asian, I have already explained, same with the Northeast asians. Anyways, I have no hatred against any people. There is even a theory that every people originated from different parts of Africa. The Southeast Asians are also even said to have originated from China, Taiwan, and even the austronesians who came from the African island of Madagascar, so even southeast Asians could have African blood mixed with Chinese. Who knows. what I do not like though is when people lie about their own ancestry or pretend to be a different ethnicity that their truly not. Southeast Asians especially Filipinos say they look like Hispanics when they look totally different!. who cares if you both have darker skin. The indians have darker. The middle-easterners have darker skin. The Italians have darker skin. It's not the skin that you can tell. There are different facial features. The Hispanics have facial features close to the Caucasian. The southeast Asians have facial features of the southern Chinese, Taiwanese, or even southern African facial features. It is completely different. Oh, by the way, I recently found out that aside from Korean, Japanese from my mother's side, and Ainu and Japanese from my father, I even have Native American blood too mostly Cherokee and Inuit from my father. Anyways, we are all people, but we all look different in our own unique way. Accept what you are and don't lie or pretend to yourself. You only make a fool out of yourself.Oh lastly, there were arguments online where people ask about the discriminations against the Koreans, Chinese, or other people? There is discriminations, but that is the same thing as saying why do the Whites and Blacks always fight? Or the Mexicans and the El Salvadoreans? With the Japanese, Japan is a small island, so the Japanese wanted to protect their country from foreign people. Also, Korea did the same. Korea is a small peninsula with Japan as the closest country. With the Chinese, Chinese people entered Japan recently. Same with the other foreign people. Korea was the only country to be allowed to enter Japan for many years, because Korea was a colony of the Japanese Empire. China is a different story. China is a large country, so they migrated here and there especially southeast Asia. Koreans are not too discrimnated as much as most people say. Koreans have been living in Japan for many years. They are so close to each other. China is pretty from Japan. You could see Japan from Korea because Korea is a peninsula and Japan is an island right next to each other, but China is too far from Japan and Korea. Anyways, many Koreans live in Japan under Japanese names. The Chinese usually stay with their own names. My father told me when he was a child, there were a few Koreans, but other foreigners like Chinese never lived in Japan, because their country is so large that they didn't have to migrate to Japan. What for?To the Japanese people, I am not trying to protect the Koreans. I am only a quarter Korean. But, the Koreans are like the family or cousins to the Japanese. Come on, stop fighting against Korea and Japan. I can see how Japan hates China, because the Chinese don't have the same DNA as the Koreans and the Japanese, but there is no reason to hate the Chinese either. Please stop this nonsense. Korea and Japan should honostly become one country.Southeast Asian: http://new.homemissionsdivision.com/moduleUploads/nhothsirifamily.jpg http://img65.imageshack.us/i/tj10gi8.jpg/ Han Chinese: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/21/31404881_e4876ae005.jpg http://www2.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/100+Years+Hong+Kong+Cinema+Press+Conference+Ju5X8DslCsWl.jpg Korean: http://strangeseouls.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/ybm-koreans.jpg http://img.youtube.com/vi/C7Vg1HcgL8U/0.jpg http://www.joojinmo.org/images/jinmo.jpg Japanese: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ab/Japanese_people_of_all_ages.jpg http://thesituationist.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/japanese-guy.jpg more

Resolved Question: CAN YOU GUYS CHECK MY ESSAY IF THERE IS ANY GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES?

CAN YOU GUYS PLEASE CHECK MY ESSAY IF THERE IS ANY GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES? When I was little, I was a jealous person as far as my mother was concerned. She said I used to make my brother who is a year younger than me punished by her. When I was five, I had my little brother stand on a carton of eggs. Of course, all the eggs were broken. I don’t remember the reason why I did it but my mother said I said I did it because I wanted to make him punished and get more love from my parents than him. Another memory of my childhood, I was much smaller than any kids who were the same age as me because I did not like eating. I remember my mother tried to make me have some healthy food such as meat and vegetable. One day, my mother put Kimmi, which is one of the Korean traditional side dishes made of cabbages, in my mouth and I tried to chew it. Then, I pretended to watch TV cartoons but what I really did was spitting the food a gap between a wall and cabinet. Unlike my childhood, there is no problem of eating habit and I have the average fit now. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. HAVE A NICE DAY ! more

I am learning the language which helps me sing along when i listen to the music. i have eaten korean food and I am learning how to cook the food. It's a interest but i realized I really like the korean men too. So i would really like to know how i can attract a korean man without getting intimidated by him. I want him to know I like his culture and not just his looks. It's very heartbreaking sometimes cause all the koreans in my school sit with each other and i Just don't know how to approach them especially since I'm indian and they are korean. It makes me feel really insecure sometimes. even if they reject me i just wish i had the courage to at least say how i feel. more

Resolved Question: Do you think that oriental cultures (eg. Japanese, Chinese, Korean) are too overrated?

Most people think that east asian people are very intelligent and work a lot. Most people find the Chinese/Japanese characters beautiful and want to learn their languages, because "sound better than English and other occidental languages". Oriental food is very appreciated because it's more healthy than ours. Their phylosophy is wiser than ours, Japanese cartoons are great and so on. While I have nothing against these peoples, I think that their cultures and way of life are extremely idealised. What's your opinion on this? more

Resolved Question: Any "cook your own food" restaurants in DC?

Hey, so I'd like to take my boyfriend out for his birthday & I was thinking it would be cool to go to a "cook your own food" restaurant. I've been to one before in DC but I don't know the name. I know the Japanese/Korean type is called yakiniku or shabu shabu, if you know of any Japanese restaurants that would be perfect! But I'd also like to try any "cook your own food" restaurant available in DC. Thanks so much! more

Resolved Question: What website can offer me a great supply of French food, chocolate, and beverages that I may order?

I need to know a few websites that people use (maybe students in US from France) to buy delicacies (all sorts of foods and chocolates) from France or even Quebec. Just a website similar to the Korean (HMART) where Korean students obtain their home country foods. Kind of like an online French grocery store that is trusted??? Thanks a lot. more

Resolved Question: Roommate's Korean boyfriend hitting on me?

My roommate is Korean. She's totally cool, and I was excited when I met her because she's a lot like me, and she was willing to deal with my weird chemical allergies. Everything's great, but she's got a Korean boyfriend who's, to say the least, creepy. He hits on me, steals my food, and last night I caught him in my storage room, trying to steal a bra that was hanging up to dry. My roommate and I don't share a storage room, so he had no business being in there. Even worse, he's kind of rude to her, too. He demands that she cook him food, then she doesn't eat until he's finished. I don't think I'm particularly xenophobic or racist, so what I'm trying to find out is if this is a cultural thing and ergo par for the course (and then some boundaries about what he can and can't do with me should be set), or if he's a jerk who shouldn't be anywhere near my sweet roommate. more

Voting Question: Working in Japan or South Korea as an English teacher?

Okay, I'd like to know about peoples personal experiences. I'm not old enough to do so yet-but in class at the moment we're talking about what jobs we want to have when we are older, and when the teacher asked me I replied I'd either like to be a English teacher in South Korea or Japan. And since then-I've been thinking. Which one is better to work in? I have a stronger interest in Japan (I'm not a weaboo), I really love the music, culture, art, food and fashion. I like the Korean culture, but not as much as the Japanese! I've had an interest in Japan since as long as I can remember. I'm aware that teaching English is pretty much the only job available to foreigners (that's what I have read on Yahoo Answers at least), I know Japan isn't some fantasy land where everyone looks like an anime character (personally I don't like anime and manga). I initially wanted to work there, but then I became a little interested in Korean culture and thought I'd like to go there instead, but I'm not sure. Of course, I don't have to make my mind up yet because I wont be going for years-but all the same, I would love to know peoples experiences of working in each country so I can maybe make my mind up, because I'd like to learn one of the languages too. Thank you~!@Lady Ga Ga, meh, it was the suggested category and I just do whatever yahoo tells me to do. Also, you seem teh slight troll amirite more

Resolved Question: Tips for my trip to Jamaica?

I'm traveling to Jamaica (an area near Negril) for six days on Saturday. I've only been to Jamaica once and it was only for three days. I have some questions about it. 1) I don't want to gain weight even though it is a vacation. What should I stick to? (food is from an all inclusive buffet) 2) What's a good schedule for each day? I wake up at 9 (by myself) on weekends, so I'm sure that's when my day should start. 3) I don't get sunburn very easily (because my cousins make me wear gallons of sunscreen), but I want a nice tan. I'm Korean (not too dark, but not pale). I don't want to get too tan though. Any advice? 4) I'm fourteen, so I have a sufficient amount of acne. My mom says it's because of my bangs (I have short hair) and it blocks the sun from getting to my forehead and near my hairline (my problem areas). Any ideas? 5) I'm planning on going for power-walks with my cousins while I'm there and also sun-bathing. I'm bringing an iPhone (taking the SD card out). Do you know any good music (or movies) I can get? Thank you! more
