Open Question: Is Subway a better option than other places?

I'm talking if i wanted to get something out to eat. I don't really enjoy fast food like mickey d's or wendys and i really am not a fan of pizza. I only eat subway 1-2 times a month, not very often, and i usually get the oven roasted turkey breast on wheat bread, toasted with onions, tomatoes, lettuce, jalepeno's and sometimes i'll try olives. I hate green bell peppers so don't suggest that. and i just get chipotle sauce on it, which i am thinking about nixing. Does this sound healthy or healthier than the alternatives? and should i lose the chipotle and get a better for you sauce or does that not affect it much. Thanks! more

Open Question: Driving myself insane. I'm heavier than I've ever been in my life?

I used to be anorexic. I lost a lot of weight. Then I started binging. On and off. One day I'd eat nothing. The next I'd eat everything. I couldn't control it. I tried purging for a little while. Then went back to starving myself all the time. Then binging again.. Now at 16 years old I am 5'5 and 155 pounds. Granted.. that was after eating a shitload of food and not having gone to the bathroom yet.. but still I've never seen that number on the scale before. I want to scream or cry or just hurt myself somehow. I can't believe I'm this heavy. There's a part of me that wants to go on the super healthy 1400 calorie per day diet plan that I just drew up for myself, plus start running again. But there's another part of me that wants to just never eat again. I feel like all of the days that I starved myself. That I suffered through the pain. That I didn't eat more than 500 calories for weeks at a time.. were all for nothing. I gained it all back plus a whole lot more. It was completely pointless. I feel like somehow if I starved myself one more time and kept it off.. it would all be worth it. Of course the logical part of my brain says that's stupid because I can't keep it off unless I lose it the right way. I don't know. I NEED to weigh 120 pounds again. I need to. That's a healthy, attractive, reasonable weight. There are 2 ways of getting there. One makes sense and one is crazy. Why can't I just do the right thing? more

Open Question: About how soon could I lose an inch off my waistline following this plan?

I am 5'3, and 125 lbs. My measurements are 36-28-36. I would like to get my waistline down to 26 or 27. Here is my plan: Each day I will eat 1200 calories, all healthy foods, and I will drink lots of water and green tea. On Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, I will do Pilates for 30 minutes, and I will dance for 30 minutes. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, I will do vinyasa yoga for an hour. How soon could I achieve my goal? Thanks more

Open Question: Lawsuits on an Animal Shelter?

My boyfriend and I adopted a 2 month old Rottwiler puppy on 7/28/2010. We adopted him from the Henry County Animal Shelter in Paris, TN. When we got him home, he seemed a bit tired, and we figured he just had a really long day, to let him rest. We fed him later on in the night, and he ate most of his food. The next day, he didn't seem anymore playful, still just lethargic and wanting to sleep all day. We encouraged him to play, and he did for a bit, but got tired rather quickly. He started to not want to eat much food, so we poured some chicken broth on his food, and he ate quite a bit. That same day, he had a bowel movement, and it was diarreah. We thought it was due to the switch in his diet, and the switch was why he was not feeling well. The shelter never informed us on which brand of food the little guy was on. On the third day, my boyfriends mother came to wake me up, saying I had to take my puppy to the vet because he just threw up blood. So, we woke up early, and took the dog to the vet, which the vet said it sounds like he had parvo. I've read so much about parvo the past few days, just wondering and worrying about my little pup. But, I know all I can do is hope, and wait. After this long humdrum story, I have a few questions about lawsuits against this animal shelter. -The shelter told us he was up to date on all of his shots, and the vet said even if he had his shots, he could still develop parvo. Either way, isn't a shelter supposed to make sure the dog is in healthy conditions before adopting them out? -On the contract we had to sign, it is highlighted to make sure the puppy sees a vet within 72 hours of adopting them. Though highlighted, the lady never mentioned taking him to a vet, only to be neutered at 6 months. -Since we took the dog to the vet within the 72 hours, shouldn't the shelter pay for the vet bill? If they don't can we file a lawsuit? We are really praying for our little guy, and if he passes away due to this horrible virus, then I feel the need to file a lawsuit on this shelter. They should NOT adopt out sick puppies. If he does survive, and they don't pay his vet bills, again, I feel the need to file a lawsuit on the shelter because they adopted me a sick puppy, and he was taken to the vet within the 72 hour time frame. Another side note, the puppy was in a cage with at least 10 other puppies. This, is inhumane. more

Open Question: Whats wrong with flexitarian. Its helps people have a more healthy diet.?

i think being a flexitarian is good. Vegetarians and vegans saying that want more ppl like them. I would encourage flexitarian myself. ppl are starting to eat more vegan/ vegetarian food and its a great for ppl to be healthier and for animal 2 being slaughter. I do agree its your a vegetarian or a omnivore.Im about to start eating more vegetarian diet myself knowing that i don't have to give up meat. Im doing it for health and animals being slaughter. I probably eventually stop eating meat being a flexitarian. I will not eat meat because of the risk of diseases and to live longer. meat is healthy but you cant eat too much of it, just like eating too much of something is not good. I believe vegetarian is place for ppl to say their NOT a vegetarian but like the diet but eat meat LESS.its not stupid its just away of admiring the vegetarian diet and eating meat occasionally. I think vegetarians and vegans are making a difference. more

Open Question: A vegan having a snake as a pet?

I am vegan and I love snakes. I REALLY want to have one as a pet(a corn snake) But would it be considered animal cruelty if I feed mice to it? And I don't mean live mice, the pre killed frozen ones? I hate that the mouse doesn't have a choice or a chance to escape and is killed unnaturally, so it's murder, but at the same time, mice are snakes natural food and there is no healthy alternative for it...so what do you think about my situation? What should I do? more

Open Question: What is a good health book?

I was looking to get into better shape and my problem is always the food portion. My problem is that I have a really hard time balancing, like having the right portions of fiber, protein, etc. My other issue is that I always go overboard in the sense that I think everything is too unhealthy, even when it really isn't. So basically what I really am saying is that I am terrible at planning meals. I was wondering if there was a book that was really good for that. I looked at Eating for Life, but my problem is that there are too many processed foods in there and I'm more of an organic, the less ingredients the better, kind of gal. I also look at Eat to Live, but for myself personally, that's not a sustainable plan. I can imagine doing that for a few months and then going insane and devouring a chocolate cake. So really I guess what I'm asking is what books would you recommend that are focused on healthy, sustainable eating habits that use natural ingredients, but aren't diet, quick fix type of books? more

Open Question: healthy diets for a 12 year old?

I'm not fat. I'm quite skinny. I don't want to lose weight. In the pass three years, I have had way to many unhealthy meals. I eat a lot of popcorn with butter. There was one point in time where I'd have three bags of popcorn per day. I also had a buttered bagel everyday for lunch (even now) at school. btw when I eat popcorn, it's as a night snack. same for some of the following. Tortillas with melted shredded cheese, and sour cream and onion chips. I really want to just get off of this horrid food course so that i can be healthy. Don't give me a "you're 12, you don't have to worry" two days ago, I felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest. plz help me. more

Open Question: Why did my koi colors fade away?

About 2 years ago i bought some of my first koi from petsmart, they were small with lots of black and orange spots, they did quite well in my pond for a while, but thier colors started to fade. I still have them but thier colors have faded almost completly away, they have only a couple of tiny black spots. All 6 of the koi that i bought from there have had this problem except 1 (who is beautiful). None of my other koi have had this problem at all. What has caused it and is thier a way to fix it if it hapens again. Im giving 4 of the faded ones to a friend because i really dont like how thier coloration has changed so drastically. They dont even look good anymore, they are perfectly healthy but thier coloration is just horrible. Ive been feeding them color enhancing food in the hopes that thier colored would come back but its not really working. I think that maybe it is just petsmart koi because I have not had any problems of this type with any of my other koi. more

Open Question: What does a 'normal' diet consist of?

I was wondering what exactly a 'normal' diet consists of. I understand that you would eat the right amounts of food from each food group but is that actually healthy? It seems as though you would be eating alot of food. Is it to much? If you could give me examples for each meal eg breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks etc. Thanks more

Open Question: Will These Kind of Effects Continue if I Keep Eating Healthy?

At some point last week, I decided that i wanted to start eating healthier. I just got tired of eating greasy, salty, and sugary stuff all of the time. So for the last week or so, I have been eating a lot of fruits, vegetables, boiled chicken, and some plain spaghetti. I haven't had any junk food, no candy, nothing fried, nothing greasy, or salty. Also no alcohol. I have noticed some rather interesting effects that i didn't really expect and i am wondering if they will continue. 1. I have lost a bit of weight (i guess i did expect that) 2. I have been sleeping really well 3. My concentration has improved. I have been getting a lot of school work done 4. I feel rather relaxed. Very little in the way of anxiety or bad moods. 5. I have a lot of energy but it feels controlled and steady; not jittery or uncomfortable. I have found myself wanting to go on really long walks instead of just sitting around. I assume these positive developments are due to eating better, so i am wondering, if i keep going with this diet, will these effects continue or will it all tapper off after while, and will i feel like i did before? In other words, are these effects temporary or should they continue as long as i keep eating well?i have also stopped eating dairy too, which feels like an important detailI've gone from about 195 to about 190 I am a 6 foot 1, 24 year old male, so my weight wasn't too bad to start with but still, 5 pounds is good news to me. more

Open Question: Is this healthy for a thirteen year old?

Basically, I am five foot four and a bit, and I weighed 144lb, so now I eat 800-1000 calories a day and exercise burning off at least 600 a day. sometimes over 1000. I've already lost 4lb in a week and I want to know, how much I'm eating and stuff is it healthy? More info; I've turned vegetarian/pescetarian and eat quorn or eggs, sometimes fish - normally only tuna, instead of meat, but not always enough. Plus today I ate about 500cals in food, so I had 300cals of high calorie fruit juice. It's not like I'm living on a lettuce leaf either, I'm just eating really low calorie things. Also I've been eating little now after 500 calories I was really full... So tips on being healthier if this isn't healthy please :)Yeah, I try to always reach 1000 cals. It's because I've changed coffee and hot chocolate for herbal tea, 2-3 cals a cup, and meat for quorn and other substitutes, so I'm getting full. I'm just struggling to fill the calorie gaps because of the healthier changes. I never ate a lot before, just I ate the wrong stuff and didn't exercise... How can I fill these calorie gaps? I'm getting enough nutrients, maybe lacking a bit of protein and carbs, but I take a protein supplement if need be. more

Open Question: My Hamster has a tumor and is sick, but i love him?

I bought my two hamsters from petco, and i've seen on the internet that petco and petsmart treat their lives animals really bad and are sick, but i didn't know then. But i believe that now, because both my hamsters have mites, i have two, (Moody<3 and Robin<3), Robin just has very little lost of hair and looks normal-healthy and chubby, but i know he has it. Moody is the one that is so sick, he has a tumor on his bottom that is getting bigger... and his mite case is really bad, half of his fur is gone, even some on his cute little innocent face. i love them both so bad, i don't think i did anything wrong, i give them carefresh which i've heard is very soft and safe, kinda expensive, but i know it's good for them. I give them this healthy carefresh food and give them strawberries, cherries, lettuce, i let them run around outside of their cage, i take them outside for fresh air for two minutes a week, i give them filtered water, a big cage, im sure i took care of them! and im only fifteen, i can't get a job(i've tried) i know i can't ever pay for moody's vet bills, i want to put him to sleep, with a painless vet shot, (euthanize) because i want to know he died without pain and a good life. should i put him to peaceful sleep? of let him live with scratching and the tumor. the euthanization sounds good for him. more

Open Question: How much estimated weight will be lost if I....?

I am a 13 year old girl. I am about 30 pounds over weight and I am 5'4. I have been working out and dieting since Monday. I have been running 10 minutes on the eliptical, then doing 50 sit ups. Eating wise, just making healthier choices. Not following any strict diet, just more salads, and less junk food. I've lost 3 pounds in less than a week. Is this average? I was also wondering how much weight you all think I'll loose if I exersize (the same routine) twice a day, in a month. Open Question: Why am I not losing weight when I do cardio regularly?

I do cardio (jogging) about 3 times a week, and I barely eat junk food or sweets. I've been doing this for a couple of months now, so why am I not seeing results? Do I need to cut back on how much I eat during lunch or dinner, even if it's healthy food? more

Open Question: My hubby keeps trying to sabatoge me?

I weight 220 pounds at 5'6" (I had a baby 5 months ago and the weight didn't leave my body after the baby did), yet he keeps telling me I'm sexy and I look good, but I know that even if he finds me attractive, that much weight on me isn't healthy and I don't feel myself at the size I'm at. I'm trying to diet and exercise and he knows that, but it's like he begs me to eat the fattening foods with him and sit around with him. Do you think he is? Why would you think a guy would do that?Lol, wow, Fat Jayden, You're a wacko, but you're funny. more

Open Question: HOW do you eat healthy?

I just can't seem to do it. I could do it if I put my mind to it, but it's just so hard! In general I'm not terribly unhealthy. I'd just like to be more healthy than I am. I'm definitely a sweets person. I love love love anything with sugar in it! I frequently make cookies and cakes and pie and eat every last bit of it myself. :( I'm just lucky that I have such a good metabolism (though I'm 19 and still young...). An example...If my friends and I go out to eat at a restaurant, I'll order chicken strips and fries or fish and chips and they'll order something healthy like caesar salad with chicken breast or greek salad or a wrap. To me, that's just not appetising. Everytime I've tried those things it just doesn't satisfy me. It's just like eating grass to me. I don't think it tastes good. I came back from a 7 day cruise yesterday and the entire time I was there I ate SUPER healthy. And, I enjoyed what I ate! Mainly because the buffet was stocked with mountains of every food you could imagine and the healthy options were there and they tasted GOOD because they were made by amazing chefs! Now everything seems so boring in my house compared to what they had on the cruise. :( I look in my fridge and cupboards and see NOTHING that I would like to eat. The only thing I could think of eating was flaked tuna on toasted bread. And it was boring. Any advice? How can I make my meals yummy, but healthy at the same time...How can I create options to eat without having to buy out the entire grocery store? more

Open Question: Is Tetramin good for freshwater fish?

Hey, I used to feed my fish Wardley Flake food, and thats about it. But when the food is almost over. I always get a bunch of "flake dust" and it just goes all over my tank. So I switched to Tetra Min today. The flakes are already small. But I picked up the 3 in 1 Tetra min. It has the Tetra min flakes, Baby shrimp, and Granules. I just want to know if these foods are good for my fish. I have 2 gouramis (1 male 1 female, get along great!), 5 Gold barbs. 7 tiger barbs, and 3 Albino corys. (oh I feed the corys ALgea wafers and sinkable shrink pellets). Will all my fish be able to eat the shrimp and granules? And every what should I feed the granules and shrimp, since I heard the shrimp is like a snack, not daily food. But I have never heard of granules. Also, how should I feed them? I heard for smaller fish, like the barbs, I need to crush them? And I have been told, that if they are dried. wich they arey, tha I need to soak them a bit in aquarium water before feeding, is this true? Thanks for all the help, and sorry for all the questions, I just have never fed Shrimp or granules, but since I heard they are needed for a well healthy balanced diet, I decided to start feeding it to them. Thanx! more

Open Question: I'm 2 stone overweight, how long will it take me to reach a normal weight?

Ok firstly I realise it's different for every person, but i'd like a rough estimate. I'm not really sure of my height, i'm either 6'5" or 6'4" i'm uncertain because I haven't measures myself in years and I weigh 234lbs. Until 6 days ago I would eat junk food all the time, have about 3 bags of crisps a day if not more, about 4/5 cans of coca cola and my meals would often contain chips(fries) and other unhealthy things. I also hadn't exercised in years. So when I started my diet 6 days ago, i've been eating much healthier foods, I no longer eat crisps or drink coca cola, I had some chips yesterday but that was part of the one cheat meal a week I have planned. I'm eating fruit and low fat yoghurts instead of crisps now and drinking either water or healthier drinks depending on what my parents buy (I tell them water but they often ignore me lol). I've also started running on a treadmill I purchased for my birthday, so far i've been going on every other day for about 15 minutes but I plan to make it everyday and ofcourse as I get fitter increase the time too. If I stick to this how long do you think it would take until I am a normal weight? (Please don't get sidetracked and forget to answer this question :) )Hmm, so it should take about 10 weeks which is 2 and a half months. Thanks for the feedback :). Argh i'm really eager to see a difference, it's so frustrating :P more

Open Question: If I eat very little, what shall I eat?

For the optimum benefit for my body, what foods should I eat? I need to eat foods that are good for me, super healthy and that give me energy and take care of my body. It needs to have more flavor than lettuce - lettuce is basically water and doesn't have protein or vitamins. I am eating less than 500 calories per day, and I have been for a while. I need to eat foods that will support my body and not torment it.I'm also a vegetarian more

Open Question: What are some healthy snacks?

I'm lifting weights and have an exercise all worked out and i'm planing to enhance it later too when i become stronger. But i also need to eat right. Like Fruits, Vegetables drink plenty of milk and whole grains and wheat. But i want to know what foods (Snacks) are out there that are healthy but also good to eat (By which a mean taste good) I like Chips in Salsa and I like meat. I'm avoiding hot dogs and other fatty meats and eating a lot more ham and turkey. Any of you guys want to name some foods for snacks. (Please say what brands they are if you can) more

Open Question: What Exactly Is Going On With This?

For the last few days, i think thursday through today, I have been trying to healthier. I have been eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and i have been staying away from dairy, salty foods, corn syrup, sugary stuff, etc. I have also done a little bit more exercise than normal, nothing too radical though. And in that time i have lost 5 pounds. Just four days of eating healthy and i have gone from 195 to 190 pounds. I makes sense that eating healthier would cause me to lose weight but 5 pounds in 4 days? I would think it would take weeks to lose that kind of weight, not a little more than a weekend. How could i lose so much weight so quickly? Five pounds seems like a lot for such a short amount of time. And i haven't been starving myself and I have felt great. I feel more energetic and not sick at all. more

Resolved Question: High blood pressure in a skinny teen?

I am a 15 year old male. I am 5 foot 7 and underweight for my size. One day I was in a pharmacy with my mom and we decided to have our blood pressures checked out. My moms pressure was normal, however when I checked mine, it says I have a 132 systolic pressure. There was a label on the machien and it says that normal is 120 and under, and high normal is 130-140. My diastolic pressure was 88 and it says on the machine anything under 90 is normal. thinknig back, I do eat alot of fast food and not alot of fruits and vergetables. I dont excersise alot, but I do have days where i do. Just not frequently. Despite this, I am very skinny. I care about my health alot. Do you think this is just a fluke, or is this a sign of a more serious problem? and I thought only overweight or obese people get high blood pressure. What do you think is the cause of this? I get alot of sleep at night so sleep isn't an issue. I will try to excersie more and eat healthier. more

Open Question: How can i keep the motivation to exercise?

Ok so i feel really motivated at the moment to exercise - i have found a BBC fitness programme website which aims to make you combine exercise with daily activities and imporve your diet. I have read it thorugh and it helps you to progress over a series of weeks (its not like dieting its more about healthy living - so no fad diets for me!) I am looking forward to stating the programme but feel that i will quickley become less motivated and want to hit the fatening food all the time. Do you have any tips on keeping motivated - perhaps things that you have tried? thanks i really appreciate it x more

Open Question: Puppy food for picky female with sensitive stomach?

She doesn't like any hard food. None. I've tried Purina, Kibbles and Bits, Science Diet, and various samples over other dog foods. Purina is the only thing she even remotely likes. The problem is that most of them upset her stomach and give her diarrhea, and it doesn't help that my mother likes to slip her bits of human food every now and then. I can't tell if she's actually sick or just not feeling well because she ate. She's also very prone to throwing up when she's in a car for more than 10 minutes. Is there a medicine I could get, something I could put in her food? We even tried offering her a dog food that has venison (deer) in it and she wouldn't touch it. I really don't want to have to feed her chicken, yogurt, etc to bribe her into eating the hard food. Wet food is out of the question because it makes the diarrhea even worse.. She's been to the vet, she is totally healthy. She is 10 weeks old. more

Open Question: Why do poor women on welfare keep having kid after kid?

Why do poor women on welfare keep having kids they can't take care of financially? I just don't understand it. You see a girl, woman, or teen and you can tell she is poor by the way she and her kids are dressed and look. You stand behind them in line at the store and wait while they use their food card from welfare. You notice she already has two kids, and is pregnant for another. Why? Why would you get pregnant when you cannot pay for the ones you already have? Is it lack of knowledge? Do they not know that kids cost money? Do they not understand it will only make life harder for them? Is it because they don't care because they live in free housing, get free food, free medical, and free heat? The more kids the more money? I am lost here. Why would you do this to yourself. I am not judging all people on assistance. Most people I know on public assistance do keep their apartments clean and teach their kids proper manners and make them go to school and make sure they do well and spend their food stamps on healthy foods instead of chips and soda while holding down full time jobs. I'm talking about the few women who keep popping out kid after kid, don't even try to teach them proper manners and gives the rest of the people on public assistance a bad rap. Why do those kinds of moms let their kids get dried snot all over their face and rotten teeth from drinking a bottle til age four? Trust me I see plenty each day. I live in a severely depressed area. I have two kids and had my self and husband get fixed because we can't afford anymore kids on our current income. Why don't those women do the same? Or at least figure out how to use birth control? Why do so many (but not all!) poor women on welfare keep popping out kid after kid and don't care if they do well in school, feed them junk food and don't care if they have an ounce of proper manners?to the one who said birth control costs money- No. It doesn't. If they walk into planned parenthood they can walk out with as many condoms as they want. Same with birth control. If they are too poor to afford it (and if your on public assistance, like many of these women are) they will give it to you for free. Any method, month after month as long as you want family planning services.Hey Steph-if you *READ* my question properly, I am asking about those few morons on welfare that keep popping out baby after baby. I'm on welfare myself and have kids and hubby and I work full time and teach our kids manners and buy healthy food and keep my place clean-I'm asking what the hell is up with those few women who let their kids look like trash (dried snot on their faces, don't even try to put them in clean cloths) feed them junk food, let them act like they have been raised by a pack of wolves or Staten and keep popping out kids they can't afford? more
