Open Question: Chocolate Covered Strawberries?

I want to make chocolate covered strawberries and I don't want to melt chocolate because I don't have a double boiler pot. I wanted to buy chocolate frosting and just use that, but all the recipes I looked up, involved melting the chocolate. So I just wanted to know would the frosting be ok? Have you tried it and did it taste just as good? http://img.meijer.com/assets/product_images/styles/xlarge/1001029_644209004393_A_400.jpg http://s3.thisnext.com/media/230x230/Betty-Crocker-Whipped-Frosting_61650F09.jpg the frosting that i was considering to buy....So should i hold the pyrex bowl over the boiling water? And i was thinking of just melting the frosting in the microwave, that won't work though right? And another question is, after i cover the strawberries with chocolate, is it ok if i place them on aluminum foil? Because i don't want them to get stuck. And this is for tomorrow so if i stick them in the fridge will they taste fine? Sorry about all the questions :/Thank you for all the answers! They were all very helpful(:Thank you all for all the help, I'm going to the store to buy all the things I need, and I've also decided to use bananas and pretzels, hope my family enjoys it !(: more

Resolved Question: I want to do half of a family size brownie, do I cut half of the ingredients?

I have the Betty Crocker Fudge Brownie 13 X 9 Family Size Mix. But I only want to do half of it so it would be 13 X 4.5 brownie. Do I need to cut it in half? The recipe calls for 1/4 cup of water, 2/3 cup of vegetable oil and 2 eggs so do I need 1/8 of a cup, 1/3 of the other cup, and 1 egg? This is my first time making brownies so I want it to be precise. ThanksCouldn't I just fill half the mix in the 13 X 9 pan? See I don't know how to do this! more

Resolved Question: How young were you when you learned to cook? Did/Do you "scratch" cook or recipe...?

...cook? What was the first big goof youmade when you were learning to cook? Was it eatible? Do you like to cook today or is it something a person has to do to survive only? Who taught you to cook? Please give your experiences, comments, stories. No wrong answers. My first "goof" were cinnamon rolls from a Betty Crocker childrens c.b. I tried to follow the pictures and got messed up and forgot the filling till after they were in the pans so I just sprinkled it on top and baked them. Needless to say, they came out of the oven like ROCKS! My dad and poor dog couldn't even bite into them! (They could almost bounce). I have only tried to make those type rolls again once in my life! And Yes, That time they came out GREAT! But it is a lot of work that I decided was easier to buy something instead. LOL Will look forward to hearing your experiences, trials, errors, and victories! more

Firstly, I don't want to make it from scratch. I've already got a box of "Betty Crocker Devil's Food Cake" mix. I just want to know how to incorporate the peanut butter into it properly and what adjustments I need to make. Or if I can even do that. If anyone knows a completely separate recipe from the one on the box, but still uses the mix that I have, then that would be great too. So, any ideas? more

Resolved Question: Does anyone have an older Betty Crocker cookbook? I'm looking for the recipe to an apple cake!?

Resolved Question: Better Homes and Gardens or Betty Crocker cookbook?

My husband bought me the 14th limited edition Better Homes and Gardens book... and I've had alot of recipes not taste great. I have to alter them alot and then they're okay (FYI- I cook great, it's not me, its the recipes). Also I've found alot of errors with the index and page numbers. I was just wondering if Betty Crocker makes a better cookbook and if there's a better variety. I know the BHG is huge, but it really doesn't seem like there's a lot of desserts or cookies, and I LOVE cooking. Let me know what you think, and if you can recommend a specific book that would be great too! more

Resolved Question: How to tell when boneless pork shoulder is done in crockpot... read on?

Im making some pulled pork sandwiches using a 3 pound boneless pork shoulder. The recipe calls for it to cook 8-10 hours. It's been cooking in my slow cooker now for 6.5 hours with an internal temperature of 175ish. To make matters more complicated it suggests a 2.5 pound piece of meat and mine is 3 pounds... yet is done sooner. >.<? Should I continue to let it cook longer or is it done already? If anyone is truly interested the exact recipe is the Pulled Jerk Pork Sandwiches from the "Betty Crocker Cookbook - New Edition" circa 2005. 10th Edition more

Resolved Question: Super Chocolaty Brownies?

Ok, so, I've got a big 'ol box of Betty Crocker Ultimate Fudge Brownie Mix. Well, it's not gonna be good enough by itself for the brownie I am attempting to make. If I just happen to add in some delicious Chocolate Syrup (like you use for ice cream or chocolate milk) would it completely ruin how they come out? Oh, and I don't have any other alternatives. And I'm not gonna go out and buy anything else. So just give me a straight "Yes, it will completely mess up the box recipe and your brownies will suffer a terrible demise in the oven!" or a "No, it'll be fine and will be super deliciously chocolaty." more

Resolved Question: How do you make carrot cupcakes with a betty crocker cake mix box?

I got a carrot cake mix box from Betty Crocker, but I am not that good at making cakes, so I decided to make cupcakes out of the "cake" mix. There's was no cupcake recipe on the box so I decided to ask here. All I need is how to make the mix into cupcakes because all the other times I tried cupcakes out of cake mix, it always came out wrong in some way. more

Resolved Question: How does softasilk work?

I got this old betty crocker cookbook from my grandfather and all the cake recipes call for softasilk. Do u buy plain softasilk from the store, or is it another type of flour? I know that I could follow the recipe for those, but if I wanted to add it to another recipe for cupcakes that's too dry, would I add it with more water, or is it just another type of flour, or do I just add it? how much? more

Resolved Question: Gluten-free cake + 3D Wilton cake pan?

I'm making a Duck shaped cake for my work BBQ (our mascot is a rubber duck, lol). One of my co-workers has Celiac Disease, so I'm making the cake gluten free with a Betty Crocker mix. Will this work well with the pan, even though the pan says to use a pound cake recipe? Is the overall texture/thickness of the cake batter terribly different from a normal boxed cake mix (because I know I can use a normal one with a 3D pan, have done so in the past... but this is my first time with a GF cake). I bought two boxes, will that be enough? I would ideally like to test it beforehand, but the GF cake mix is quite expensive, so I was going to do a test run with normal cake mix. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Question on making homemade bread?

I'm just curious. I have a recipe for white bread from a Betty Crocker cookbook that I have used since I was a teenager (I'm 54 now). The bread turns out great; no problems there. My question is about one of the ingredients. It says you can use 1 3/4 cup of water, potato water, or milk which has been scalded and then cooled. Why does the milk have to be scalded? I've always done it and just now wondered (shows you how quick on the uptake I am!!). The milk is NOT being used to dissolve the yeast, that is done in warm water before the milk is added. Plus, if you choose to use the 1 3/4 cup of water or potato water it is not required to be heated in any way. Just curious after all these years....thanks. more

Resolved Question: cake mix cookie recipe without eggs?

I have Betty Crocker Dark Chocolate cake mix and I really want to make cake mix cookies. The recipe calls for 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 2 eggs, and a box of cake mix. HOWEVER! I don't have eggs. I looked at substitutes for eggs and I don't have applesauce or bananas. I would really prefer not to use mayo either. Is there any other substitute I can use to make this recipe? more

Resolved Question: Old Bisquick shortbread recipe?

Instead of making the ugly individual strawberry shortcakes i need the old recipe for sweet shortbread from bisquick. It was on the recipe card on the lid of the old plastic canister they sold with bisquick 25 years ago. It was baked in an 8x8 pan with dry sugar sprinkled on top before baking for a nice sweet top crust. Much better than the individual ones for strawberry shortcake. if you have a betty crocker cake box mix, look to see if you have the devil's food one. if you do please tell me like how many eggs, how much oil, water, milk... the thing is the recipe is the pudding one, its on the side of the box, not the one on the back(one with the pudding). more

Resolved Question: Is it a good thing to be 'precise' when making rocket fuel? c/c?

(a wee bit of roasted tongue here and a spatula swipe at those 'precise' cooks!) Seasoning with Reasoning A pinch of that, a shake of this Stir well and whip well-- with a whisk. Now flour your hands and grab the pin. Grandma’s way to a recipe. And, oh my, the results were right. Those seasoned hands sure knew their ways. No timer around for the oven. Peek and sniff, that’s all you needed. Then came Betty-- you know the one, and pinches and shakes: so passé. “Bring on those measured spoons and cups and thermometers plus timers.” And now my gorgeous apple pie tastes like your gorgeous apple pie; same for lasagna or meatloaf. And God forbid, our chicken soups. But pinch me…. so I’ll start to shake. Shake to the real joy of cooking; where a pinch of that may be good and Grandma’s ways take hallow ground. But first a suggestion for all: Let’s start “the bonfire of recipes” with their science neatly measured and send Betty back to the shelves! ….then we’ll see about apple pie!Prognost: good points more
