I just bought a projector for a home theater and it has an HDMI input to work with my HD Satellite TV Network. The problem is that my home theater's amplifier does't have HDMI inputs nor outputs. Instead it has S-Video and Composite Video outputs. What should I do to enjoy the benefits of High Definition? Should I buy a video signal converter from S-Video or Composite to HDMI? If so, will the signal quality be affected?

moreVoting Question: Is there a good hdmi box for home theater projectors?
I am looking to setup a home theater system with a projector to replace our old tv. I already have a surround sound system. its a simple one that only deals with sounds. and i am currently looking at different sub 1k 1080p projectors and they dont have many sounds featurs either. but it would be easiest to find a box that i can connect anything with different connections, cable, hdml, composite, component, and vga for computers into this one box, and output sound, preferably optical, and hdmi, which would go right to the projector. i would use the box as a switchbox to chose the video
any one have any ideas on where i can find such a box?
moreResolved Question: Will my video card work for this?
I have a compaq evo d500 ultra thin and it has an intel 82815 graphic controller in it. I want to get a vga to component cable so I can plug my pc into my home theatre component 'in' then component 'out' to my projector. The reason is so I can save buying a 50' vga cable to run beside my 50' component cable. The vga to component cable manufacturer says the video card needs to be able to support this application. Does my video card? Or how can I find out? Thanks.
moreResolved Question: What home theater console should I use?
I am going to hook up all of my various gear in my room into a big home theater system. This includes:
My XBOX 360 (HDMI and RCA)
Two Desktops (both with HDMI and DVI)
1 Laptop (HDMI)
5.1 speaker system
HC1500 projector
I am hoping to be able to hook all of my items into my home theater console, ceiling mount my projector, and have just one video cable running to it from my home theater console. I am also going to mount my speakers on the walls. So...
1. What would be a good console for under $300? (sorry small budget)
2. Do I hook my speaker set up to the console through its console base (like a mini home theater console) or should I hook them directly into the theater console?
3. Can I just add speakers? Or do I have to get a whole new speaker set to do that?

moreResolved Question: Where can I download HDCP test content?
Hello,
I am working on my home theater setup, I am working on some calibrations and I'd really like a way to verify everything is in place as it should be. The plan I have is to install a blu-ray reader on my PC and run it to my projector, before I do that I'd like to see a little bit of 1080p content. I've downloaded some 1920x1080 video clips but I don't think this is what I am talking about. I am looking for something that will run like it was a blu-ray disk, even just seconds worth would be cool. I am concerned about HDCP working with my sound and video as I'd like it to.
Thank you.

When i say gifts, i mean for myself. I am 13 years old, and i am split between whether to get a laptop, or a big screen projector for a home theater. My thoughts are that i already have a TV so why a projector, but i also have a family computer, so why a laptop. The pros are, the projector will be big, and fun to play video games on, and the laptop will be cool to have one in my room, and portable. So which should i get?? I am also trying to think of other cool things to get along the lines of those, so i will take suggestions AFTER you answer my first question. I just don't like having money without spending it cause i always use it on something stupid. please help!!
moreResolved Question: How do I hook up all these parts for a home theater system?
I recently was given a 1080i projector, so I decided to make it part of a home theater. Unfortunately, I'm confused about what I need and how to connect everything to get it to work, and since I plan on buying everything online or used I can't really just go in a store and tell them to give me a bunch of things that work together. My plan is to have the projector, a blu-ray player, ps2, and 5.1 surround sound as parts of the theater. If anyone could help answer my questions below that would be awesome!
1) The projector is 1080i, would it work with a 1080p blu-ray player?
2) Is it correct that I could connect the bluray player to the A/V receiver with an HDMI cable, then connect the A/V receiver to the projector with another HDMI cable (obviously the projector has an HDMI input)?
3) Do I need a specific type of A/V receiver to be able to use the bluray player's video and surround sound capabilities?
4) I just want to connect a regular coaxial cable input to the A/V receiver. Are there A/V receivers that have the coaxial input on them? Also, if I bought one that doesn't, is there a way for me to convert the coaxial input so that it can go through the A/V receiver?
5) I also want to connect a PS2 to the A/V receiver. I understand that since the PS2 does not have HD capabilities I cannot connect it to the A/V receiver with an HDMI cable. However, what kind of cable would I need to be able to connect the PS2 to the A/V receiver?
6) Assuming I can connect the PS2 to the A/V receiver, would I be able to use that through the HDMI from the A/V receiver to the projector (for the bluray), or would I also need an additional cable from the A/V receiver to the projector to be able to use the PS2?
7) How can I be sure that a specific A/V receiver will work if I buy the 5.1 surround sound system (including subwoofer) seperately?
8) Will the 5.1 surround sound system work with the coaxial input or ps2? I don't mind if I don't actually have surround sound, but will I get any sound at all through those?
Thanks in advance!
moreResolved Question: What home theater recievers are good?
I need to buy a home theater reciever and am not sure what brand to buy. The budget is 500-1500 dollars, but if something is really good, then it can go over. It needs to be 7.1 or 7.2 channel and we are going to be using it in a dedicated theater room. We will use pretty high quality speakers(we have a 3000$ budget for those) and an HD projector.
It needs to have good sound quality, and a lot of options. And a good GUI. i was thinking these looked good :
Onkyo TX-NR807 the TX-NR5007 and the TX-NR3007
Yamaha RX-V1900 and RX-V1065'
and most integra devices.
Which of these brands/models gives the best bang for its buck and if none of these are that good what is? What is a good online retailer to buy from? im currently looking at newegg and amazon. Also what specifications should i look for? What certifications are better? like what is better THX DOLBY or DTS? and which levels of each are the best?
A good GUI with a lot of options is a must, and atleast 4 hdmi inputs. 5 or 6 is prefered.
If it has a USB port does it mean that it can play videos from a usb drive? playing video over a network would be good too.
Screenshots of the GUI or a video would be good too and personal experience too.
if you need more info ask ill post more details.
moreResolved Question: Home theater problem?!?
I have a 1080p Blu-ray player (sony BDP-S360), a 1080p AV Receiver (Denon AVR-2310) and a 1080p Projector. The problem is that the system only works on 1080i !!
The Blu-ray is connected to the AV Receiver with a HDMI 1.3,
and the Receiver is connected to the Projector with a HDMI 1.3.
But when I switch to HDMI format (1080p) on my Blu-ray settings the picture goes out!
Now I'm on the Component Video Format (1080i) and the system works perfectly even if I the blu ray player is connected to the receiver with an HDMI and not with Component Video!
When I'm on the 1080p resolution I only can see the Blu ray movie, when I go to the Menu of my Blu ray player or I watch a DVD the picture dissapears and it says: resolution not supported.

moreResolved Question: Why is there HDMI out or HDMI in on audio receiver and video projector?
I'm going to build a home theater in the near future, but am confused about the options.
From my understanding HDMI carries both audio and video. For example, connecting my cable box or vcr to tv. I only have to use one hdmi to do both.
Now here are my questions.
Where is there HDMI in on an Audio receiver? Couldn't you just use Audio cables? Or do you need this to carry the digital sound from a Blu-ray to the receiver?
2nd) Why does the audio receiver have an HDMI out?
How do you hook these things up?
Lets say I had, Blu-Ray Player, Cable Box, Xbox (all HDMI), do I just hook all of those up to the receiver and use the one HDMI out to the TV or Projector?
As far as the projector is concerned. Could I just use component cables? or does it not do full HD?
Thanks

moreResolved Question: Will Upconversion or Blu Ray provide any image improvement on a non-HDMI projector?
I watch movies on a digital projector that's admittedly not designed for top of the line home theaters. (It's an Epson EX-30). I can't afford to upgrade to a new projector with an HDMI port, and I'm trying to improve the image on my current one.
I'm not quite as concerned with a perfect HD image as I am with an image with better contrasts and better accuracy in shades of black and white. The projector uses component video cables, but with my old 480p DVD player, that doesn't count for much and the image still looks a bit muddy.
The Epson EX-30 is compatible with most HD devices, but it doesn't have an HDMI port, so I know that if I switched my player to an upconverter or Blu Ray, I wouldn't get the full benefits of HD. My question is, will the players improve the contrast or clarity of the picture even a little bit, or is it entirely the fault of the projector that the image looks the way it does?
moreResolved Question: What Home-Theater Projector for a college dorm room? Need advice please.?
My budget is about 700$ for the projector itself. I am living in a 6-man dorm room next year, and we have a HUGE white wall to project on. I want to get a projector that we can hook up TV, video games, and laptops to. So a couple of questions/facts.
1- The room has a lot of windows. So the brightness output is pretty important, so over 2000 lumens I think at least.
2- What do I have to do to have it project TV without it being a crappy little TV projector with a built-in tuner? Do I have to run it through the other tv's in the room (2 others on a stand below this)
3- Suggestions on projectors? Here are the 3 I am looking at right now. ANY help is greatly appreciated.
4- I think one of those little switchboxes from radioshack would be the most efficient right for all of the cables? so in order to run only 1 set of cables to the projector?
Thank you for any help. Basically, I just would appreciate anyone who has gone through this process to set up a home-theater system to give me a few tips on setting this up
And here are the 3 projectors I am looking at right now.

moreVoting Question: DLP PROJECTOR LAMPS cheaper alternative replacement?
I own a Plus Piano DLP video grade projector which is 200 watts and only about 500 lumens and 1000 hrs of bulb life. I use it on a dedicated home theater room which is totally dark projecting on a 100" screen. It's almost film like video and I've been using it for 7 years now on an average viewing time of 2 hrs/day. (Obviously it has surpassed the rated lamp life). At present I am using my second replacement lamp and I know that sooner or later it will also expire. Cost for a replacement is $400.00. Hi. I have a problem here. In one part of the room, I have my computer. In the opposite side of the room, I have my HDTV and Blu-Ray Player. And in the middle, I have my HD Projector. I want to be able to plug my computer to both HDTV and Projector (and Monitor). I have a dual DVI out on my video card. I tought of taking the DVI output, convert to VGA, run a VGA cable to the projector and voila. Howerver, VGA (Analog) tends to dissapear. Would it be better to plug a DVI to HDMI converter on the video card, then run a HDMI cable to the projector and plug a HDMI - VGA converter (for now and hdmi later)?.
Or should I send the HDMI cable from the computer, and the HDMI from the blu-ray to a HDMI switcher, and send another cable to the Projector.. (BTW, No sound on the projector.. All from home theater)
Also, In that case, can I put a HDMI splitter to have a cable that goes to the TV and The monitor?.
Same thing for the Blu Ray. Can I put a HDMI splittor to go to both?
My HDTV has 2 HDMI and VGA port, no big deal here.
My projector has 1 HDMI and 1 VGA port.
Well Thanks for the help!Forgot to mention that I want to view both sources in the best possible resolution. So 1080p for Blu-Ray and High Computer Resolution.Michael: Thanks for the answer. But at a certain point, will the VGA cable get obsolete? All new video cards now comes with Digital Ports (DVI)...

moreVoting Question: ps3 and its capabilities?
Hi all! I most certainly have made use of my google search bar (I think its almost begging for my arrow to steer clear nowadays..) and have looked up lots and lots regarding the ps3 and just sorta wanted to run it by and confirm with anyone interested ^_^ I've most certainly been left behind in today's generation of consoles and have recently considered purchasing an xbox or ps3. Atm I'm leaning on towards the ps3 as it possible to have a linux os etc on it, not to mention options concerning the hardrive.
Now , games are an important aspect, but as I'm considering upgrading my home theatre etc I'm also looking at something that simply MAKES it more convenient for me to watch my media whenever and in the format i choose. which brings me to...
MKV!! yes oh so many forum threads plague our interwebs. but as i said I only wanted to run by these 'maybes' that I came across, since every single google search i perform end up bringing results of thread posts that are from TWO years ago!
1) With isntalling redhat or any other linux os, its possible to play .mkv without having to convert or separate video and audio correct? I've used VLC and GOM player etc on pc (though I'm not sure if gom was on linux as well though no doubt it probly is) But if i were to have linux on my ps3, then no real worries concerning media or any such thing right?
2) Of course it may seem more than obvious but I'm one that really likes to have people tell me "Yes, that is correct (additional insert ~nub ~mouth breather ~ idiot ~inquirer)" whenever i ask if something or so and so happens to be true or possible. So here it is, now I like to back up alot of shows etc, but most often they are in .mkv format. I always back it up on dvd and throw those discs in my binder and call it good day. With or without linux is not really the question here. The ps3 will read the media right off the disc, right? (whether it will be able to load it is another question, concerning format etc) And with the addition of gom or vlc players with linux, I dont have to worry about convernting .mkv or any other obscure format so long as there is a codec somewhere in deep space in which i may get my hands on, no?
3) Finally, onto the third question! cough*.. ugh i mean fun fact i happened across. Hardrvies... A friend of mine and I were discussing this topic as he was trying to help me decide when i had mentioned to him that I was considering buying a console in the near future, as soon as I purcahse another projector that at LEAST had a 720p native res. This same friend owns a 360, and he told me of a horror story of a ps3 owner whom happened to be a friend of his, and how his ps3 hardrive finally gave out and he had to fork out hundreds to get a new hardrive, or consider buying another ps3. This to me sounded absurd! But only because I didnt know as to what type of hardrive the ps3 was compatible with. I searched the topic, and soon discovered that the ps3 uses a simple little 2.5" SATA drive. I almost laughed at the hilarity. No doubt maybe his friend DID fork out hundreds of dollars. But only maybe cause he didnt know any better, or at the time he made the purchase correct? I mean neither did I! I was thinking that perhaps sony used some sort of special harddrive that was only exclusive to the ps3 and in which you had to order directly from them such parts concerning storage! then i started remembering the old days of laptops... and my hellish encounters with hardrive failures and priceranges of drives. Then i started thinking 'omg.. maybe this isnt the right thing to go for then" But then that convenient little voice in my head told me... DUDE! its been years since then! And you know how the game goes! Hell almost 2-3 years ago when you were look at quad core cpus, they were well over 1k$ dollars! Now you can find em for less than a hundred! and even better newer models are available at those prices! So of course i looked once again and voila! there they be, convenient 320gig 2.5" SATA drives ripe for the pickin! ok enough with the dialogue. Is it true that so long as you can place the drive into the HDD bay of the ps3, you ccan of course use the thing, I mean since its an SATA hookup (even if it didnt fit into the bay it could simply act as an external though of course thats just inconvenient) So yes, 2.5" SATA HDD's are compatible. right?
I thank you all, and just for icing on the cake for w/e thats interested or yearning, have a flame war of console goodness. I want hard facts plaguing this thread, from both sides, try to avoid the insults, but if you DO use them at least be creative and original k? I am a new consumer in the market looking for a good time, and I just nd a helping hand here from everyone's frustrations and pride. So go on fanboys , oh please do carry on. Thanks once again, and I hope to hear some juicy details and feedback!
moreResolved Question: Cable Box to AV Receiver HDMI & RCA Connection?
Hi,
I have Yamaha Home Theater AV Receiver with 5 speakers, Projector and a Flat screen TV (I have to get HD cable box from cable vision). Yamaha receiver has two HDMI inputs and one HDMI out put. I have connected the projector to Yamaha using HDMI connection. I also have HDMI cable run from cable box to Yamaha. The problem is Yamaha's HDMI port receives just Video only (it was mentioned in the user guide). For audio I have connected RCA cable from projector to Yamaha. I am planning to do the same for cable box also. When I want to watch TV on my projector screen, how do I get audio? If I run RCA cable from TV to Yamaha, do I have to turn the TV on when I watch the TV show on projector screen? or powering on the cable box is good enough? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

moreResolved Question: Why is my Epson Projector turning off?
I have an Epson ex50 projector I am using for home theatre, we have had it for around a month. Now just the last two days it turns off on its own. I have it all set up the right way and you can still hear the sound through my surround sound but the picture is gone. I just grab the remote and turn it back on but it has happened about 5 times today. I don't watch it any more or less than I have since I purchased it so I don't understand what the problem is. The last time it turned off I could hear the fan pretty loud but I don't understand why it is getting so hot all of a sudden, or if its getting hot at all. Is there just something wrong with this one?? This thing has cost a lot more money than I expected, and if it is going to cost more money to fix it then I am just going to take it back. I got the projector for $599.00 the screen for $150.00 the projector mount for $65.00 this thing to hook it all up for about $40.00 a 36 foot S video cable for like $20.00 and my husband SWEARS its not going to cost any more money. Please someone let me know what to do.
Thanks!
moreResolved Question: How would you rate this projector on a scale of 1-10?
I'm debating whether to buy this projector for a 106' screen: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9037106&type=product&id=1218011397159
I'll be using it for cable, video games, and a home theater system. I have blu-ray player, HD cable, and 5.1 surround sound. So I just need the projector.
moreResolved Question: Is this a Great Projector for a Home Theater?
It has to have great great great definition. It will be used for watching movies, playing video games, connecting with the internet, watch football, etc. Although usually the theater will be dark, the screen should be crystal clear even with light in the room---or at least close to it.

On a scale of 1-10 how would this projector rate and why?
That's the most I am willing to spend. Also, I am looking for 2 pairs of 3-seat chairs for the home theater as well. Not looking to spend that much. Is there anywhere I can buy quality leather ones for under $2000 combined? Where?

Thanks in advance.

moreResolved Question: Video processors and Frame Interpolation?
Is there an affordable external video processor that can do effective frame interpolation?
I have a home theatre set up with a 1080p projector that operates at 60hz (which does a 3:2 pulldown at the LCD panels), and while I know some higher end HD projectors have an internal processor that does interpolation (to varying success) I was hoping there might be an external option that won't cost an arm and a leg. I was hoping to not spend more than $300-$400.
Ideally, the processor would do frame interpolation, AND the 3:2 pulldown before sending it to the projector, thereby removing both types of "shudder" that can sometimes be experienced.
Any suggestions?
Thanks very much!
moreResolved Question: How does a 3D Movie done with Real D Work?
I was wondering what gives a 3d movie done with Real D work? Does the 3d come from the 3d formated video? or is it the projector that makes the video 3d?
Can I, for example, take a boot leg video of the movie My Bloody Valentine 3D and with the 3d Real D glasses watch the boot leg video at home in the same 3d quality as in theaters?

moreResolved Question: DVI/HDMI cable for Laptop to Projector?
Im debating on alot of set-ups for my next home theater system. I have a sager np9262 "DVI" and i found 2 projectors with a big difference in price.
A Optoma HD65 / HD803 The 65 has multiple inputs, is just dosen't have a dvi input. Running at around 1,000 bones. The 803 is DVI compatable only at 2 G's. I was looking at the variety of cables, DVI/HDMI for instance. The main question is, if i went with the 65 and used the DVI to HDMI cable from laptop to Projector. Will the audio go to the projector, or not? Im puzzled, because im going to hook up the audio output jack to a Home theater Surround sound system "Cerwin Vega" YaY! I hope this makes sense to most of you. I want DVI output from my Laptop, and keep my sound output so i can use it for my stereo. Normally HDMI carriers the sound to the video source...if im correct. Any suggestions are welcome, and if your interested in my set-up. Shoot me a message. Thanks Joe
moreResolved Question: Home theater projector cable question.?
I don't know a whole lot about projectors, so I'm hoping someone has a suggestion for me. I recently bought a home theater projector. I have it conntected to my satellite receiver with an s-video cable and had it connected to my dvd/home theater system with a composite (yellow) video cable. I thought I'd try to get a little better picture quality from the DVD player, so I bought a component to VGA cable. (my projecter doesnt' have component input). Now, whenever I use the DVD player, everything is mostly green. It also has a checkered line running along the top of the picture. When I turn on the cable receiver, the picture is just fine, so I know it's not the projector. Anyone have any suggestions for what the problem could be? I've checked and re-checked the connections, and everything appears to be plugged in correctly. If I can't figure it out, I guess I can go back to the composite cable, but I was told I can get a lot better quality out of component. Thanks. My projector is an Epson PowerLite 835p - http://www.projectorcentral.com/Epson-PowerLite_835p.htm

moreVoting Question: HD projector problem?
I have AT+T Uverse HD service, and in my basement I have a home theater setup. The uverse video signal goes to my receiver via component cable, and then my receiver goes to my projector via component cable as well. This is my problem... I can't get an HD resolution to show up in 720p/1080i. The projector is HD ready all the way up to 720p and I have HD service so i don't know what the issue is.
moreResolved Question: Home theater cable question?
I have a question about how to best connect my DVD player / home theater system to my Projector.
My DVD player has Component and HDMI video outputs. My Projector has Composite, S-Video, and Component Mini D-sub 15pin video inputs.
My question is, which would give me better quality:
1) RGB Component from my DVD player to Component Mini D-sub 15pin video on my projector.
2) HDMI from my DVD player to Component Mini D-sub 15pin video on my projector, which I assume I'd need a VGA to DVI adapter in order to connect the HDMI to the 15 pin on my projector.
Or is there a better setup? Thanks.
