Open Question: What would you rate this short story on a scale of 1-10?

My fork just wouldn’t hold the peas. No matter how many times I tried the trick over, they just wouldn’t stay. They fell off every time. It wasn’t meant to be. Just eat the steak first, like always, I thought. But I wouldn’t let myself. I was not like all the others. I wouldn’t bow down. I wouldn’t conform to their ways. In the book, the first step says to defy the simplest rule. The simplest one I could think of was dining etiquette. At the school where they’d taught us how to be average, we’d all learned proper dining etiquette and table manners. Dinner was practically the same every night. Salad was always first, then either steak, chicken or some form of fish, which was followed by either peas or corn and sometimes, when we were lucky, pasta. I frowned at the fork, and then let it fall against the perfectly designed porcelain plate. We’d always had these plates. Light purple flowers lined the edges, making a border around the oval shape. Secretly, I always tried to push my food past the border while daydreaming about Daphne and I crossing the border between town and city. Leaving our small town like Roselyn had just last year. I wanted so badly to follow, but we were still too young. Zachariah laughed, making me look up in instant irritation. I looked up immediately, meeting the eyes of four furious family members and one who was just dying to see me get yelled at. I hadn’t been thinking when I dropped the fork. Against the etiquette rules. Oops. I smiled mischievously, thinking this broken rule would lead to something much bigger. My father furrowed his brows and gave me a stern look, while my mother just shook her head in disappointment. “My apologies. I must not have been thinking.” I batted my eyelashes and twirled a strand of hair around my index finger, just before the breaking point. Carolina looked happy to see me finally break a rule. She’d been waiting since I was just a little girl, she’d told me, to screw up and get myself into a whole lot of trouble. I laughed at the thought. Rebellion was the first step, so said the book. Father smiled, but it soon became clear it was purely sarcasm as his smile faded and became a scowl once again. He sighed, “You broke the simplest rule of them all. Etiquette is something you learn in the first grade, right after your third birthday. Just think of it. A three-year-old, sitting at the table, acting twice as polite as you, and minding her manners. If you can’t even do the simplest of tasks, we’re going to have to send you away.” He wasn’t kidding. And that made me secretly very, very happy. To be gone from this petty little town. Emilia laughed, “You’re on your way to the city.” Everyone here said it like it was a curse word, like it was the name of the devil. It was just a city they weren’t familiar with. That didn’t make it Hell.“That’s just what she wants,” Zachariah chimed in. I began to look at him with nothing but pure hatred. I couldn’t believe that he of all people would have understood me before even my sisters, even before my mother and father finally understood. Yes, what I wanted was to leave the little town where I temporarily resided, and move into the big city. I remember Roselyn always telling us tales of the city, before she’d finally left. She said no one had the same face, that no one had the same eyes, or hair, or skin. That everyone chose what they wanted to do in life and that they all had something different and special about them. Unique she called it. Every single person was different. Daphne and I had promised to meet Roselyn in the city when we finally turned 17-years-old. Well, no more hesitating. It was now time. And tonight was the night.Zachariah pointed at me accusingly, “Zara’s reading that forbidden book. You know, the one about escaping the small towns of sameness and going into the big cities to be different. I saw it on her bed. I flipped to the last page that she’d read. It was marked with the library book markers. All I saw had to do with something along the lines of breaking rules. That’s step number one or something. She’s planning to get out of this town and leave for the city.” His tone was one of tattling. He turned to me and concluded, “My little, naïve sister, why are you so foolish? My mother looked at me with absolute anger. She pointed to the ceiling, “Upstairs! You’re never going to the city and that’s final. Unless you want to be arrested, you’ll never mention this again. Now go to your room.” I looked around the table. Everyone around the table nodded their heads in agreement. I sighed and rudely pushed back my chair with haste, and then marched to my room.I opened the door with one hand, while making a fist with the other. I turned through the pages, back to where I’d last read. Meet me at nine o’clock –Daphne the bookmark said. I looked at the words with suspicion, hoping it wasn’t a prank done by my brother. I read through to the very last step. Step 8: Leave Town. Pack your bags. Do not take everything. Take only one thing that will remind you of home. That is crucial. Remember that you are starting a new life for yourself. You are leaving this small town forever. You are going to finally be the person you’ve always wanted to be. Remember that you are not the same as you were, as you have been, or as you thought you would be. You are different. Good luck on your journey. Maybe we’ll meet in the city, Same JaneWith a smile on my face, I packed my bags. My face might have been the same here, and my skin, and my eyes and hair, but there…I would be different. I would be as Roselyn called it, unique. I would finally be me. more

Open Question: Why is the steak I just made so soft?

In order, I made a marinade last night and threw the steaks in, and left it in the fridge for 24 hours. I pan fried the steaks after letting them sit out and return to room temp (~25 minutes?). I pan fried one side for 3 minutes, and the other for 2, aiming for medium/medium-rare. The outside of the steak came out nicely brown and a little seared, and the center was medium-rare. Great, right? But the steak itself was really soft, hard to cut, almost rubbery in consistency. Basically too moist/soft.. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it in the future? All 4 steaks I made came out looking great, but the texture was all like the above. They looked great, tasted great.. chewed like gum.. Thanks for any advice! more

(heard there was a steak house and want in on that) 5) How far ahead of time do we get our passports because we have none? 6) How much do meals cost or is that part of the fare? I know this is long and drawn out, I just want to make sure all my bases are covered. Thank you in advance more

Open Question: Help! My mom is out of control with her drinking!?

My mom is a low-functioning alcoholic and she pulled me aside at a family get-together a few weeks ago to tell me that she will not be able to come to our wedding because she has no money, no job or anything and is about to become bankrupt. She won't get help for her alcoholism and at this point, idk what to do. I love her to death, but seriously, she has said to my brothers and I numerous times that she's aware that she's drinking and smoking herself to death, but she wants to die. Is there a way to force her into a rehab clinic since she's verbally expressed she wants to die and according to my brother, when he was living with her one summer away from college, he found her in the kitchen drunk with a steak knife in her hand crying her eyes out and ready to cut her throat...for no reason. She said she has nothing left to live for. People, this is really really bad and IDK what to do!!! more

Open Question: Is it wrong to want my boyfriend to buy me things or do things for me?

I've been dating this guy for 4 months and other than buying me a few drinks at the bar & paying for a pizza when we go out (with his kids, might I add) he never pays for anything. I have on multiple occasions taken steaks to his house to grill, among other foods & cooked for him & his family. I have bought beer & taken it to him. I've taken him out to eat. I've bought him movies for him that are hard to find & given them to him. I feel I have bent over backwards to please him, but when I ask him to go out to a movie or something , he says he doesnt' want to or doesnt have money. If his kids ask, he's all over it. I've even given him a greeting card to tell him how much I like spending time with him. I feel guilty when he pays for my drinks b/c I can't help but feel he's keeping some sort of tab. THe other day at the bar his bill was over $100, and he thought I put some of my stuff on there, i did NOT. I paid my own way. Just the idea he'd even ask made me feel kind of bad. I don't want a sugar daddy, but a small token of appreciation woudl be appreciated. What do you think? more

Resolved Question: Is steak still good if uncovered in the fridge after a day and a half?

Open Question: Do you think my friend is gay?

Hi, I am a 16 year old boy. Recently my childhood friend has been acting pretty strange around me. (I don't want to keep writing he constantly so I will call him M) We stopped being friends about 4 years ago but we are now friends again. Like I said I am 16 and my hormones are all over the place. So I am not to sure if I am gay or straight. Sometimes I fantasise about M and me and other times I fantasise about a girl I like within the group. But she has had more boyfriends than I have had steak dinners. Anyway M acts straight when we are all in the group and says how much he hates gays and stuff but when its just him and me he asks different. He hugs me and sometimes he rubs his shoulder against mine when we are walking side by side. He also puts his hand around my shoulders when we are walking together ( like "the move" when you are with a girl at the cinema). M is a really nice person and we were like best friends and I still class him as my best friend. I would just like to know what you think. But I don't really care if he is gay or not. Because like I saidI don't know if I am either. Thanks more

Open Question: I am not sure if I am healthy or not?! HELP PLEASE!!?

I am an 18 year old female. I am 5'6 and weigh 122 pounds. My current BMI is about 19.7. I am an extremely picky eater. I do not eat steak, pork, turkey, ham, seafood, anything tomato based, pizza, etc. The only meat I eat is boneless chicken. I am not a fan of chocolate and certain junk foods. I do not drink milk either. This is not because I think any of it is unhealthy, it is simply because I do not like any of that stuff. I try to eat very healthy though, such as limiting myself to little or no calories or grams of fat. I do not eat a lot, I tend to eat a normal size dinner but just pick at foods throughout the day. Plain noodles are a big part of my diet. I eat many fruits and vegetables, and I take daily vitamins. I am still unhappy with my weight however. Resolved Question: Where online to get a screen printed shirt of a person's face?

I wanted to get a Ben Francisco Shirt online (preferably screen print and absolutely no iron-ons!) Here is what I was thinking: On the back Fransisco on the top and his number 10 in the middle On the Front I wanted to put some clever cheer with on of his nicknames (see other this question for nicknames: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100908091954AAiRIET) and then a screen print of his face (or a silhouette of is whole body hitting a home run) in the middle So is there anywhere that would do that? I just wanted 1 t-shirt for myself and if you know a ballpark figure on how much it would cost that would be great but if not don't worry about it It would be also nice if it was machine washable (because I wanted to focus on the game not trying to keep my cheese-steak off my shirt)I said no iorn ons! and I have been looking but no one has where you can screenprint a persons face more

' I had organic soy chili with organic cheese and doritoes' I eat homemade organic daily... I don't know if I should be posting my breakfasts, lunches, snacks and dinners daily..??? I have noticed, usually the organic braggers are slurping down a coke and piling cheetos in their mouth while bragging about how healthy they ate 3 days ago. Would it be rude to point out that cheetos and coke aren't organic? Or that eating a Big Mac with apple fries instead of french fries is not organic..... Why do people do this?
