Open Question: Any moderately-priced restaurant recommendations?

A cousin from San Diego, is flying to Atlanta, for a conference. She'll be staying with us Saturday night. We want to take her out to dinner either: a) in Atlanta, or b) locally: Marietta, Woodstock, Roswell, Kennesaw... Any recommendations for restaurants in either locale? Please keep the following in mind: no chain places that she has back home, decent ambience - but not expensive, no place based on fried, unhealthy food .... (I already have some ideas, but I'd like to add to them.) Many thanks! more

Open Question: Does it bother you to see the same chain stores/restaurants everywhere you go?

Do you like the convenience and comfort of recognizable brands or do homogeneous chain stores subtract from local flavor? Will we eventually have one store for each type of product? Open Question: Do I "order for the lady" on our first date?

It seems that the etiquette gurus are split on this one...some say the gentleman should ask the lady what she would like to order, and place the order with the waiter for her, and others say that the lady should place her order with the waiter on her own, only be allowed to do it first. My question is...am I between a rock and a hardplace on this issue, or does it matter? BTW, we are going to a very upscale restaurant (not a chain, we are talking white tablecloths and genuine silverware). She is a very classy, well educated lady, so obviously, I want to get this right...but when all the "gurus" and website info are divided, what's my best bet? more

Open Question: Can a restaurant deny me because of my age?

Okay, so I live in a town where our movie theater is in the same plaza as a chain restaurant called friendly's. All of us always go to friendly's after seeing a movie on Friday. A lot of people do this so the restaurant is usually very busy. Well to our surprise, last Friday we were denied being able to eat in the restaurant. They told us that they have placed a new rule that states: Any person under the age of 18 may not be admitted to the restaurant after 8:00 PM unless accompanied by an adult. I didn't think that restaurants could discriminate against me because of my age, but I left it alone because I wasn't sure, but now I am ready to go back. This brings me to my question of Can a restaurant deny me because of my age? They do not serve liquor though. more

Resolved Question: was i wrong to expect more at a fancy, quit expensive resturant from wait staff and a custumer.?

i'm a mother of 5. i believe it is my job/duty to teach my wonderful kids as much as possible for when the go out into the real world.the mommy song type stuff and much much more.i don't have a lot of money but what little i do i put towards life lessons.on one such trip we went to eat at a quit fancy restaurant.(extremely expensive) upper class all the way so i thought.now my lesson here is that there is a place and time for every thing.basically showing them the distinctions between a fast food chain w/playground and a sit down dress up formal setting w/real nice silverware. as well as that it doesn't matter what your race, employment or statues is as long as you present your money and behave accordingly to your surroundings.that theory was very much shot to heck by another patron sitting close by.i wanted to say something because the gentle man was acting like it was comedy central and we were his audience.loud, cracking very crazy jokes,mimicking/mocking other patrons and wait staff i was pist cause just as i wanted to say something he was encouraged by his waiter and some type of manager. i've really contemplated if its still ok and not to late to complain to the owner. it was my daughters birthday as well,so the trip did have significance as well.we will be going back for my sons birthday in a few months. so what do you all think and would you all have been shocked as well that the outrages behavior was encouraged.i have never been kicked out of any place or refuse to go anywhere because i have a lot of kids. my some of my friends have been ran off or wont go places because of the kids. that's why i don't want to say i wont go again.my kids behaved great. more

Open Question: Would these circumstance be eligible for unemployment is PA?

I am thinking about quitting my job and I wanted to find out if I quit under these circumstance if I would be eligible for unemployment benefits? I work in a chain restaurant as a supervisor - I am an hourly employee but I do (or did) management shifts also. Currently, I primarily work as a server and bartender, but I also cook in the kitchen. *At least once a week I am required to work a 12 hour shift with no break and no meal. I am not even able to sit down. *The cooks in our restaurant have taken to yelling at us servers and screaming "Bitch" at us when we walk by. The management knows and does nothing. *One of the managers is from Africa and is Muslim. This wouldn't be an issue except that he feels woman should not work in the kitchen and tells us that we cannot do our jobs because "it is a mans job". When brought to management, they have said "That's just how he was raised" and let it go at that. *Recently, they have cut out all of my management shifts with no notice, which has decreased my hours from 50-60 a week down to 20-25. I've been making 2/3rd less money. They also took away my supervisor benefits - effectively demoting me but allowing me to keep the title. Would these be enough reasons to receive unemployment in PA until I am able to find another job? more

Resolved Question: What should I do in LA for my 21st?

I go to LA a few times a year and this time, I'll be 21. I would like to go to a restaurant that's 21 and up so I can drink there too. My sister suggested Lucky Strike but we already have one in our town. I've never been there but I'd prefer to go somewhere that isn't such a large chain where we would have one too. more

Voting Question: Is the way my daughter was fired grounds for a lawsuit?

My 20-year-old daughter worked as a waitress at a local chain restaurant for several months. Last night, right in the middle of serving her customers, her supervisor fired her. One of her tables ordered a specialty peanut-butter shake. Another server's table also ordered the same shake. When my daughter saw a peanut-butter shake at the bar, she assumed it was for her table and served it to them. The supervisor was mad cuz it was intended for the other server whose table had been waiting 20 minutes for their shake. He fired my daughter right there, on the spot, in front of everyone! I know she was an "at-will" employee, but is it legal to fire someone in front of dozens of other people like that? She was so humiliated and hurt that she left without even collecting her tips or grabbing her coat. more

Resolved Question: Do i have any grammar/spelling mistakes? ( My food tech homework )?

Hi, this is my food tech assignment. And i really want full marks. Can you spot any grammar mistakes? thank you so much! And if you think you can make my assignment sound BETTER you can add more information for me ;) thanks! <b> 2.Describe in detail the traditional Aboriginal preparation and cooking methods. </b> The Aboriginals did not farm the land or tame animal or pets. They had to work hard because the main method of harvesting Australian native foods is gathering. The Aboriginals did not have electricity so they could not use the microwave and other electronic devices to cook their foods like we do now. When a boy is around six years old, he had to join the men to learn hunting skills while the girls remain with the women to learn the skills of food gathering. Both women and men had their own individual roles. Women had to gather plants such as bush tomatoes, bush apples, plums, berries, nuts, roots, seeds, shoots and leaves. Women also collected small animals and insects such as honey ants, witchetty grubs, birds, snakes and tortoises. The role of the men was hunting. They hunt for kangaroos, wallabies, emus and possums to the camp. They also hunted for crocodiles, fish, ducks, shellfish and platypi from the water. Plant foods and shellfish may be prepared by the women while the men hunted and prepare kangaroos and emus. The native Aboriginals used both wet and dry ingredients to create food. To process their dry goods, they had to grind leaves and dry them under the sun. To process their wet goods, they had to infuse their goods such as vinegar oil, or in chutneys for meat or fish. Men had to hunt every single day since there weren’t any refrigerators to preserve the food. <b> 3.Describe in detail the contemporary uses of Australian native foods. </b> Some Australians aren’t adapting to the diet of bush tucker foods, instead they are following the European’s diet which isn’t as healthy as the Australian native foods. Most Australians would be terrified to try some of the Australian native foods such as goannas or grubs. Traditional and native/bush foods are becoming popular such as kangaroos, emus and crocodiles. There is some native Australian or bush tucker foods that are available commercially through the supermarket chains and some native plant foods are readily available in some specialty shops. Contemporary Australian food has been described as using the best seasonal ingredients combined with other cuisines such as Indian, European and Asian cuisines. Many native Australian foods are eaten regularly at restaurants in Australia. more

Resolved Question: Liberals, are you going to be afraid of Starbucks because they allow guns in their stores?

SEATTLE - Coffee chain Starbucks Corp. is sticking to its policy of letting customers carry guns where it's legal and said it does not want to be put in the middle of a larger gun-control debate. The company's statement, issued Wednesday, stems from recent campaign by some gun owners, who have walked into Starbucks and other businesses to test state laws that allow gun owners to carry weapons openly in public places. Gun control advocates have protested. The fight began heating up in January in Northern California and has since spread to other states and other companies, bolstered by the pro-gun group OpenCarry.org. Some of the events were spontaneous, with just one or two gun owners walking into a store. Others were organized parades of dozens of gun owners walking into restaurants with their firearms proudly at their sides. Now, gun control advocates are protesting the policy. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, launched a petition drive demanding that the company "offer espresso shots, not gunshots" and declare its coffeehouses "gun-free zones." And Wednesday, that group delivered 28,000 signatures to the coffee giant's headquarters in Seattle. The group also held a press conference near Seattle's Pike Place Market, just a few yards away from where the first Starbucks cafe opened. Gun rights advocates showed up as well, some carrying handguns in holsters around their waists. Brian Malte of the Brady Campaign said carrying guns intimidates and frightens people, and said the group thinks Starbucks will "do the right thing" and change its policy. http://www.startribune.com/business/86181377.html more

Voting Question: Can help me straight up my grammer in my essay and also give a conclusion please?

Big Mac vs. Whopper (Big Mac team) The two populations Fast –foods joint in America is McDonald and Burger kings. (Associated content) The popular burger in Mc Donald is called The Big Mac, and the Popular Burger for Burger King is called The Whooper. Burger King and McDonald's undoubtedly the heavy weights of the fast food industry both specializing in the hamburger. Which Burger I liked the most, well I like Big Mac better than Burger King. Whooper is okay but Big Mac is delicious. You think it’s my opinion right but it’s not (yea kind of) but, But I have fact and prove that Big Mac Better than Burger King. Before I’ll tell you why big Mac better than Burger King first I will tell you a little history about the restaurant, the restaurant called McDonald’s; McDonald is one of the world’s biggest food chain in the world. McDonald was created or first opened in California in the early 1940’s and are now founded in about hundred twenty countries (Wikipedia, 2006). McDonald’s like to believe that their not just fast food joint, they want to be a regular restaurant .They conceit themselves in offering their customers a wide variety of food at a great price. About a few of their famous food products are Chicken Mcnuggets, egg Mc muffins, French Fries and Big Mac, not to mention the happy meal. McDonalds’s valuable and the world most well known brands and holds a major share in the fast- foods business in almost every country they operate (McDonald’s, 2006) One of the fact about Mc Donald is it’s have about 150 location in Houston alone (Houston city search), Imagine that. Well burger king only have 80 locations in Houston alone. If The Whopper is better than the Big Mac why it’s only have less location than Big Mac. Another reason is Mc Donald is all over the world, well Burger King only in United State, Canada and Europe that it. I already prove my point, but I will add some more fact information for the whopper fans. McDonald right is now in finance is up by 0.04 percents and for Burger king is down by 0.09 percents, (Yahoo finance) that what of the fact. Since I'll give you the facts, I will give you my opinion about why Big Mac better than McDonald .The reason I think Big Mac better than The Whopper because of its ingredient, The Whopper don't really have any secret ingredient like big Mac ,Big Mac is unique compare from all burger because of their secret sauce. , without that secret sauce I don't know if Big Mac will be standing a chance with the whopper. To me I think the Whopper tastes like a regular old burger, its have tomato, lettuce, onion, pickle, beef, ketchup, and Mayo just like a regular burger. I don't why people like the whopper it’s nothing compare to a Big Mac. more

Resolved Question: Are the ads on the side of the Y!A screen loosely tailored to each user's IP location and usage?

It makes sense that someone in Germany wouldn't have the same ads for American chain restaurants appear on their screen, but I'm surprised by how specific some of the ads have been lately for my use. I primarily am in the Cancer and Adolescent sections, and I keep seeing ads for USC's (University of Southern California) cancer hospital and teen-related issues as well as general ones for LA-related businesses and issues. Is this just coincidental, or does YA really tailor their ads based on each person's IP location and the sections they frequent?Stephen K - I'm assuming that you get JC Penny ads because you live in an area where people shop at that store. I've never seen an ad for them. Obviously, I wouldn't expect someone from YA to trail you around and see if you shop there. I'm not saying that the ads are precisely designed for each person - I'm asking if there is a loose fit based on IP location and usage history.CC ~ Aw, that's kinda sweet. Big Brother wants you to date and to take your vitamins, haha. more

Resolved Question: Queso found in Mexican Restaurants?

Voting Question: Do restauranats have to have nurtition facts available?

I know that some cities require them to post them on the menu, but not where I live. However, don't they at least have to be available, either at the restaurant or on their website? Resolved Question: What is your opinion here Race gap seen in restaurant hiring?

Kitchen worker Carlos Garcia envies the waiters who make more money and suffer fewer aches than those like him in the "back of the house." The very term, common in restaurants, speaks to a divide that is conspicuous yet often overlooked by diners. The division of labor plays out in Loop steakhouses and Wrigleyville sports pubs: Taking the order or seating the clients is the girl next door, most likely white, while a cadre of young Mexican men construct the meal behind the scenes. In a first-of-its-kind survey released this month, a Chicago labor advocacy group detailed the segregation of restaurants and the unequal pay and working conditions that exist between the front and back of the house. It found that nearly 80 percent of whites work in the front, nearly two-thirds of Hispanics in the back. Highlighting the issue, the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Chicago teamed with the Working Hands Legal Clinic this month to file its first federal lawsuit, against an Andersonville eatery that allegedly mistreated its kitchen staff. Meanwhile, the McCormick & Schmick's chain recently paid $1.1 million to settle a class-action suit by black employees who said they were passed over for jobs as hosts and servers. But alleged bias explains only part of the story. For restaurateurs, choosing which employees are their establishment's public face involves complex perceptions of race and class. In some cases, they also are searching for a precise skill set necessary to help a customer pair the right Pinot with the filet mignon. Sometimes, that process holds back not only minorities but white workers who don't have a model's good looks. Many immigrant busboys and dishwashers cannot realistically hope to become servers because they lack legal status or haven't mastered English. Even as Chicago Restaurant Week showcases the city's culinary ambitions, Garcia has his own dreams. Next week, he will begin a course that teaches the basics of becoming a waiter, skills such as taking an order clockwise around the table. "I would have a new path, a way to keep moving forward," said Garcia, a legal immigrant. At Pequod's Pizza, owner Keith Jackson said he hates that other Lincoln Park restaurants want servers to look like fashion models. Jackson, who wears a ponytail and tattered T-shirt under a sport jacket, says servers can sport tattoos as long as they are personable. But Jackson echoed the frustration of other restaurant owners, that young U.S.-born workers do not want the demanding jobs of dishwasher or line cook. He watched scores of applicants swarm a recent hiring fair: The prospective servers came in all ages and races; the young Spanish-speaking men on a side bench hoped to work in the kitchen. Still, Jackson tries not to fall into stereotypes, using his own scruffy exterior as an example. "You look at me and you'd think I couldn't pay my bill. I could probably buy your business 10 times over," Jackson said. "I don't want to follow all the other places who make a judgment based on how you look." http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/02/race-gap-seen-in-restaurant-hiring.html Let’s see, they leave a country and come to another because they can’t get work in their own then when they are here and working all they want to do is complain about it ? more

Resolved Question: Have you ever cooked in a national franchise restaurant? If so, please answer this question!?

In places like Applebee's, Olive Garden, Houlihan's, Chili's, and other similar chain restaurants, the food can often taste pretty good and the ambience is very child-friendly for our toddler, but more often than not we've found the food to be EXTREMELY SALTY...Do the cooks/chefs at these types of places add salt to their foods, or is that already done before the food arrives to the restaurant? In other words, would it do any good to ask them to avoid over-seasoning the dishes? Or just to leave the salt off, and I can add it myself at the table? (I thought that the meals at these places are pre-prepared for each restaurant, so if they're just heating it up, then they wouldn't have any control over the salt?) more

Resolved Question: At what point do you just go ahead and let your husband pig out on junk food..?

and forget about being concerned with his health? My husband has alot of medical problems as most everyone knows... And he is suppose to be dropping weight not gaining..yet he is a dessert junkie. I find candy wrappers in his car everyday, donut wrappers, I found two boxes of eclairs in my fridge today that I did not buy. He just sucks it all down while he is out and about or at work. last night we went out to eat at a local chain restaurant and he only had six chicken hot wings that way he could get the triple choc. molten lava with ice cream cake to have all to himself. If he wanted it, that's find but we could of shared that between all five of us to break it down..but no matter where we go..he goes for the goodies before the meal. I have tired for over 5 years to give him to eat healthier by suggestions, cooking, not buying any junk what so ever in the house and yet he does it to himself? Resolved Question: Wrongful termination?

I work for a big chain restaurant. On Friday, I called the Restaurant Support Center and complained about my manager making several inappropriate comments, and being treated unfairly on the schedule. On Monday or Sunday, I was fussed at by my General Manager for calling, and on Wednesday I was fussed at by his boss the Regional Director for calling. Today I was sent home for a "24 hour cool off". ANd I believe that when I go in tomorrow I will be fired. I need help in knowing if I should just take the firing and start looking for another job, or take legal action. I was not the only one sent home for complaining. I just don't think its right for us to to punished for telling. Voting Question: fileing a claim - business i worked for did not pay time and a half, please answer?

im going to try and make this short as possible. i worked for a chain restaurant about 2 years ago, i worked there for 2 years. this restaurant did not pay time and a half for working over 40 hours a week. nor did they pay minimum wage. i was in high school, so didn't really know much on what was and wasn't illegal. anyways i got a letter in the mail from a lawyer saying someone turned them in and i could file a claim for my money. he told me to gather all pay stubs i could locate and let him know when i had collected them. so my question is, what if i cant find any? will there still be a way for me to get the money that im owed. i have never went through anything like this before so im just looking for some help. if you know please answer. thanks! more

Resolved Question: What restaurants and fast food chains have the best foods in their dumpsters for Homeless people?

There is and ever increasing peasant population of homeless people in America and I may soon be joining them. I need to know where and know what dumpsters I might find a meal thanks to Obama. This wasn't meant to be a funny question. I have very little survival training and have never been homeless. The Obama Administration says they want change and poverty for America is the change they want. While Obama, Pelosi and Ben Bernanke destroy jobs and the economy, the rest of his administration is looting what is left of the economy. Obama said he was going to change the way things are run in Washington and all he did was accelerate the ways things have always been done in scamming, raping and looting America. more

Resolved Question: Concord, CA or Mountain View, CA?

Planning on attending a concert and doing a little traveling at the end of this summer and can't decide which city to attend the concert in. I have never been to California and would like some advice from those who either live in or around these areas or from someone who has traveled there. I will be traveling with my husband and toddler. We like going to farmer's markets and would really like to visit the beach. We also enjoy music, art and eating at unique restaurants. (meaning not the typical chain establishments) Thank you in advance to anyone that can offer any info. or tips on places to check out while there. more
