Open Question: What should I watch out for when buying a used Subaru?
To be more specific a used subaru impreza outback sport anywhere from 97 and up.
The problem is, I've been reading up on subaru's and it seems there's a consistent problem with their head gaskets going bad, and as much I've looked it up I can't figure out where the outback sport falls in what engine(s) fall under which head gasket problem. I know there's an issue with the 2.5l engines, but the 97 to 2001 have 2.1l engines, and I don't know if they the head gasket issue. From 2002 on, the Impreza outback sport has a 2.5l engine and I have no idea what category that falls into and if they even have a head gasket problem.
Also, if there's any other problems in general that subaru's face, or the outback sport in general, I'd appreciate anyone shedding some light on the topic.
Another thing, is there any difference between an Impreza wagon and the Impreza outback sport? because I haven't seen any distinction between the two.
thanks,

I know SUBARUs are good cars, but a used 2006 subaru impreza outback sport with 140K on it still worth $15,000? From eBay and Craigslist, I see a lot of 180K miles subaru outbacks still ask for 5K to 7K. We know that all cars breaks sooner or later, with a 180K miles many problems would occur, such such the failure of transmission. So my question is why does Subarus hold their re-sale value so high? Are they over-over-priced?

moreVoting Question: What kinda car/truck/van/whatever would i need?
I wana spend a few days traveling and sleeping in the back of my vehicle. Kinda like that outback australian style. I was thinking on just buying a troop carrier military truck (the kind with the tarp roofs on the back), but the problem is that some days id wana go drive a motorcycle (suzuki style) and at other times id like to race a sports car around.
I kinda wana keep the outdoors style though, which is why i like the idea of the military truck, because i could set up one of those folding up camping beds in the back along with my supplies n stuff. But somedays i feel the need for speed. I think if i used my truck like that id sling all my cargo out on the road, lol. But if i carried a motorcycle with me i would always have to return to where the truck is. Though i guess i could just park the truck near a city and drive the motorcycle in....
Well what kind of vehicle do you suggest would be able to serve as a living area too? RV seems kinda big :|

So two of my friends are taking their 1997 Toyota 4Runner and 1998 Toyota Tacoma off-roading on some fire roads in northern Wisc. My Subaru is 4WD of course, and I'm sure my Impreza Outback Sport has enough clearance, but I don't know if it's safe for a car suspension to take that kind of abuse.

moreResolved Question: Installing a new muffler on a Subaru Outback?
I'd like to install a new muffler on my '03 Outback (H4). I know, it is in no way a sports car -- but I like to hear the sound of the engine while in that car. Are new mufflers generally plug-n-play? Or would I need to get anything in addition to the muffler? I was thinking about something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FIREBALL-MUFFLER-EXHAUST-SUBARU-IMPREZA-OUTBACK-LEGACY_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem35a5fb7571QQitemZ230417986929QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories
I was hoping it'd sound something like this (haha):

Does it sound like this guy as anything else on his car, or is it just the muffler making the noise?
Thanks! :)

moreVoting Question: Subaru Impreza Premium vs. Outback Sport?
I'm purchasing a new car in the next few days, and I have decided on the Subaru Impreza 5 door. I have test driven both the Outback Sport Models and the Impreza Premium. The cost for either car would about the same based on the extras I'd be getting. I can't decide between the two models as they both have their pros and their cons.
The Outback Sport has a slightly higher clearance, and has the door protectors pre-installed.
The Impreza Premuim has a sunroof, and feels slightly sportier. The con is that I'd also get the roof racks, and would have to take them off whenever I'd want to use the sunroof.
Are there any Impreza owners who can give me their thoughts/opinions?

I was considering buying a 2010 Subaru Impreza 5 door because I have read that they are great cars. A friend of mine just bought an Impreza Outback Sport and he said that he loves the car but the paint chips very easily. After he told me that, I have been reading more about Subarus having crappy paint jobs. What do all of you Subaru owners think? Have you had bad paint issues?
moreResolved Question: What could cause a knocking sound coming from front left of my car when driving?

moreResolved Question: What kind of car should I look for?
I'm a college student looking to buy a new car. Right now I drive an '89 Chevy Blazer S-10, and I only love it because it's great in the snow and for winters in the PNW, but it's going to give out pretty soon. I need something that gets good gas milage and that can handle a lot of snow. I also drive back and forth to home once or twice a month (2 hours each way), and need to know that it'll make it.
Seeing as I can't afford to buy new, I was looking at a 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport, I just like the way it looks and people tell me that it's a dependable car, as well as good on gas and in my price range.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate it very much!!

I am considering buying a Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. Do any of you know if these are good quality, long lasting, easy to maintain cars? Any car I get now, I will hope to have for the next 10 years. I only drive 7 to 8 thousand miles a year. My other considerations are the Toyota Rav4 & the Honda CRV. I know they are in a different class, but I just want to get something that will hold cargo get descent mileage and last a long time. I would consider the forester, but it still looks like a family wagon to me. The CRV looks a little less soccer mom-esc. Thanks.

moreResolved Question: A comparative biography of Sarah Palin and Barack Obama -- who would you trust more?
Jack Cashill writes:
From a classical perspective, Palin's is the more compelling narrative. The obstacles that she must overcome to fulfill her destiny are many, varied, and real. Raised in the frozen outback by a schoolteacher father and a school secretary mom, Palin accomplishes nothing without a good deal of work, often under difficult physical circumstances.
Palin takes a semester or two off to pay for college. She works at a diner over the summer. She enters the Miss Alaska contest to help pay tuition and is awarded second runner-up and "Miss Congeniality." She interns during other summers to become a sports reporter.
After college, Palin joins fiancé Todd on his Bristol Bay salmon boat. During slow salmon runs, she works "messy, obscure seafood jobs" until she can find a job as sports reporter, and even then she keeps returning to Bristol Bay when the salmon are in season.
Throughout this period, despite the hard work and harsh environment, Palin never loses her sense of wonder about the spectacular natural theater in which she is so very much at home. When asked about the state's best attributes during a Miss Alaska pageant, Palin responds, "its beauty and everything that the great Alaska outdoors has to offer." Prophetically, she also plugs the state's "potential in drilling for oil," which, even then, "Outsiders don't understand."
Back in Hawaii, either through his grandparents' connections or by dint of affirmative action, Obama spends grades five through twelve at Hawaii's poshest prep school. Like Palin, he plays basketball, but while she is leading her school to the state championship, he is a second stringer on a team whose wins and losses go unremarked. The only scores Obama shares are the imagined racial ones that need to be settled, a working out of his "pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against [his] mother's race."
In his recent book Barack and Michelle, Chistopher Andersen quotes a black friend who rejected Obama's claimed reason for being benched in a particular game.
No, Barry, it's not because you're black. It's because you missed two shots in a row.
Obama admits to "marginal report cards" in prep school, but his underperformance does not diminish his dreams. He hits the mainland in the late 1970s with the "diversity" movement in full flower. Diversity's rationale is that people of varied cultures enrich the educational experience. Obama's upbringing, however, has been thoroughly white and elitist. The diversity bean-counters couldn't care less. His skin color improves their "metrics." Obama will ride this pony far.
After two druggy, uninspired years at Occidental College, Obama transfers to the Ivy League -- Columbia, to be precise. In Dreams, Obama dedicates one half of a sentence to a summer job on a construction site. Otherwise, he is silent on how his tuition might have been paid for. As to his grades and SAT scores, it would be easier to pry North Korea's nuclear secrets out of Kim Jong-Il.

My mother has a 2005 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport automatic with about 55,000 miles and the 2.5l engine. I have noticed somewhat recently, both when I drive it or when she drives it, that when taking off from a stop, the car will sometimes shudder and shake. It is a similar feeling like when driving a manual car and it is about to stall - the car will shake and buck. It doesn't happen all the time and seems to happen more often on inclines. It will only last a second or two as the car gets up to speed, but it is very noticeable. It started as a minor thing but sometimes feels quite violent. I think that it is the torque converter in some capacity, but I am no expert. The car seemed to always have a weird transmission since it was new - slow to kick down, feeling disconnected sometimes. When I was driving it a while back, for a second or two, it felt almost like the transmission shifted into neutral, then back into drive - there was no power and it felt disconnected. The car doesn't stall or shake at stoplights or anything like that. What could be the problem? The car still is in powertrain warranty, so if its the torque converter or transmission, she can get it taken care of. Thanks! The check engine light is not on. And it doesn't seem to matter how long the car has been running (ie warm/cold), and it doesn't happen all the time. Usually on an incline or when quickly going between reverse and drive such as when backing out of a parking space.

moreResolved Question: I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. What could be causing it to shake when I'm driving on the hwy?
I haven't had any big problems before and this happened for the first time during my commute (about 35 miles each way, mostly highway) a couple days ago. On my way to work in the morning, my car, including my steering wheel, shook pretty good when I was driving about 60 mph - for about 5 seconds...scared the heck out me, but it went away and I made it to work without it happening again. On my commute home the same shaking occurred - but this time it happened about 5 or 6 times (about the same length of time for the shaking...5-10 seconds). Once my car is off the highway and I'm going slower, it's fine. My tires are new, so I don't think it's uneven tire wear. Anyone know what could be causing this? I've got about 100K miles on the car
