I graduated last year with a BSC Hons Degree in computer science. My First job was a web development job but quickly turned into an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) role. This was fine by me as I was learning Seo. I am worried now that I am going down an internet marketing path even though I have an IT Degree. I have since finished that job and I am looking for employment in SEO. Should I stop now and start looking for more of an IT role like programming or networking (I am a good enough programmer and I have a years experience in a networking role). or should I continue on with the SEO career path? The problem with programming is my lack of experience in it, so I would probably have to start as if I had just graduated. I don't want to waste my year SEO experience as I may find good employment with it. Advice anyone? more

Hi I am a webmaster student with basic knowledge of Dreamweaver flash Photoshop and visual web developer, I have an opportunity to maintain and promote my first web site, this particular web site is a lawyer’s website and the people who created it fell out with the client and “disappeared “ the client wants me to take over the site , update textual , video, and other streaming media ,promote the site , and list it on main search engines (search engine optimization, meta tags, submitting url ) . I'm wondering if any one could tell me if this is possible? I run a few free web hosting sites which I part purchase from another company. As they fund some of it, I get limited access to new accounts. I wish to offer my clients the best service possible and am including some optimisation bonuses but to do this efficiently I need to enter a site monitoring code into each site. I don't like going into clients control panels unless necessary and was hoping I could do this some other way. Is it possible to include this in a .htaccess file, I would really just need to monitor site visits so it could just apply to the index page. this is the code: <? require("../webanalyse/include/stats_main.inc"); $stats = new init(true, 'http://weban.yiphee.co.cc'); ?> How would I write that into .htaccess, if possible at all?hi Adam, thanks but I'm trying to avoid having to access their sites and having to do this manually. ok, i'm doing java at uni right now, and i'm quite enjoying it, however i wanted to do some web work. And i figure instead of learning a new language like php, i might be able to simply use the Java Server Pages. I just wanted to know a few things about them however. Might as well list the info i'm looking for and see what info i can get. Anyway. 1: How fast / efficient are the JSPs? (in relative comparison to other languages) 2: How easy to create JSP's would you say it is in comparison to a normal java program, or a normal php based site. 3: How good / useful is the JDBC thing and on a similar note, which databases can that be used to connect to. 4: General overall thoughts on JSP's. 5: Are there any setups / OS's etc that might run JSP's better then others? I graduated a year ago and since then I have sent out thousands of CV's and had hundreds of interviews for all sorts of jobs. Some of the positions I applied for include cleaner, bar jobs, receptionist, shop assistant, search engine optimiser, web developer to name a few. I graduated in BSc Business Information Technology and I have experience in building websites, search engine optimisation and medical admin. I cant seem to get a single job. When I call back interviewers for feedback they tell me I interviewed fine but didn't get the job because I live too far or just missed out on the job to some1 else! 1. If Joe Smith has his own website and titles it accordingly, is it likely to come up at the top of search listings when 'Joe Smith' is typed in, regardless of whether his name comes up elsewhere on the internet? I am just using 'Joe Smith' as an example here - it could be any name. 2. If a website has a problem page or a similar page which incorporates a list of separate dilemmas, is it better to use a small index type list on which each line can be clicked through to the problem (which then is put on a separate page), or is it better, in search optimization terms, to list everything on the one page (on which users scroll down)? 3. If you have an e-newsletter going out to promote your website, is it better to send the newsletter or to put it on line and simply send a clickable link to subscribers so that they can view it on line and therefore boost web stats? Any help on any of these questions would be very much appreciated. I run a not for profit organisation and the website/technology side of things is difficult and fraught with so many dilemmas! more

Resolved Question: Disc optimisation/defragmentation?

I have a PC which is only a few months old, vista home premium, duel core E6750 chip, with Norton 360. It asked me to optimises/defragment the disc, but it was taking several hours and I had to stop it for lack of time. Several people told me it shouldn't take more that half an hour or so, one person told me to leave it over night, but I've noticed that when downloading things, the download will pause/stop, when the PC goes to screensaver/sleep, would the defrag also stop in the same way if I left it overnight, and is there something wrong with the PC that the defrag is taking so long, have only used the PC for web and light word proccessing so far? more

Resolved Question: Saving Adobe Photoshop CS3 files for web?

Hi, I have done my first web page using Adobe Photo Shop CS3, I have sliced all my text and images and gone to save for web - it then takes you to optimization, here I get a bit stuck, not sure what I'm supposed to do! I have tried saving the file, it looks fine in adobe but as soon as I open it in my html editor (NVU) there are spaces showing between my slices - anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Everything works great, links etc I just can't get rid of the damned spaces!!Thank you, tried that but still doesn't work, saved the file as instructed but again I have gaps inbetween my slices! Arrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!!I tried saving the file and uploading to the web using my file manager but it still doesn't work! It's going to be along day today! more

Since the arrival of AJAX, websites are being designed in a "split form": a javascript running on the client's machine, and a Php (or other) running on the server. This means that the CONTENTS of the "pages" is invisible to SE crawlers (well, I think so). On the other hand, sites now can have one page only, while the contents of the page is refreshed as the user progresses through the site. Again, that contents is invisible to SE... So, HOW do we optimise Web 2.0 AJAX sites to SE ? The header tags are not sufficient... or is there another way? more

I have 2 websites due to a recent company rebranding. 1 is the old website, which has established traffic and search engine rankings, the new one has no ranking or traffic. I have to make a choice between two jobs at where I work. Both jobs I have done before they are just splitting them into two independent roles. One is mostly corporate design work and maintenance for internal websites in the company. This job looks to be very secure. This job will be working with people I know, in the same building I am in. The other job is a working in a new department that is splitting off for the main business; the company will be doing search engine optimisation for a variety of websites. I will be doing web design and maintenance work. This job is a bit risky as it relies on the split off company’s success.
