Resolved Question: 49ers’ Crabtree conducts convoluted holdout...?

Crabtree's adviser: We'll sit out and re-enter 2010 draft When the Oakland Raiders, for some unknown reason, made Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) the first wide receiver taken in the 2009 draft, it was seen as a huge gift to the San Francisco 49ers, who then got to take the best wide receiver in the draft, Michael Crabtree(notes), at 10th overall. And it was indeed a gift, but not a gift that didn't come with some strings attached. The 49ers are now having a little trouble signing Crabtree. The 49ers want to pay him like the 10th overall pick, which he was, and Crabtree wants to be paid like the best receiver in the draft, which he is. Joe Schad at ESPN.com reports some comments today from Crabtree's cousin/adviser, David Wells, that have escalated the tensions. Wells says Crabtree is perfectly willing to sit out this year and go back into the draft a year from now. "We are prepared to do it," Wells said. "Michael just wants fair-market value. They took him with the 10th pick and you have Darrius Heyward-Bey [the seventh overall pick by the Oakland Raiders] getting $38 million? This week is crucial. Michael was one of the best players in the draft and he just wants to be paid like one of the best players. This week is very crucial." Basically, the argument is this: 49ers Management: Listen, we took you 10th overall, and we'd like to pay you like you were taken 10th overall. That's generally how these things work. You make less than the guy taken ninth overall, but more than the guy taken 11th overall? Sound fair? Team Crabtree: No. I'm the best wide receiver in the draft, so you should pay me like the best receiver in the draft. 49ers Management: But you weren't drafted the highest. Darrius Heyward-Bey was the highest-drafted wide receiver. Team Crabtree: Hey, it's not our fault the Raiders are dumb. 49ers Management: The Raiders are kinda dumb, aren't they? Team Crabtree: Yes. Now, I'm better than that guy, you know I'm better than that guy, so give me more money than that guy. That guy, by the way, got a five-year contract with $23.5 million guaranteed. It's also important to note that the same report quotes Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, as saying that he hasn't made any threats about sitting out the season. Now, that doesn't mean that they haven't thought about it or talked about it, but I'd be hesitant to assume that David Wells, cousin/adviser, speaks for the entire Crabtree camp on this one. Besides, it's only Aug. 6. Camps just opened. It's way too early to be talking about sitting out a season and going back into next year's draft. The way, way, way more likely scenario is that Crabtree and the 49ers eventually work something out, even if the holdout drags into the regular season. At that point, maybe it'll be time to start worrying about Crabtree sitting out the year. Until then, though, I wouldn't put a ton of stock into this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First of all, I don't care if it's your cousin, your uncle, or your great great grandmother. Get a 'professional' advisor to take care of the numbers. Having your cousin argue out the numbers and have to speak for you shows the ultimate unprofessionalism especially in the NFL. You want to hold out because you decided to get your cousin the punch the numbers? Then that's your problem. Go back to college ball or arena football or go across the Bay to that 'other team' if you're gonna come into the NFL with that attitude because the Niners don't want any divas on their team regardless of how good you might think your are. You haven't proven a single thing besides being a ***** that's too worried about numbers than playing professional ball and the last time I checked, the Niners are looking for a team that's motivated to win a championship. Not a team that's trying to bust a ridiculous salary cap to get to the top. That's not how Montana, Rice, Lott, Stubblefield, and guys like them rolled when they became champs. They came into this game with humble hearts and great spirits and if Crabtree doesn't want to blueprint that image w/ the 'talent' that he has...then by all means there are 30 other teams that would take you in a heartbeat I'm sure... Prove to our organization that you're worth the money and then you could cash in. We're done with busts. Thoughts? more

Resolved Question: Did you guys hear Jose Canesco is entering MMA Fighting?

Canseco admits needing money Comment Email Print Share Associated Press Jose Canseco used his muscles to take pitchers deep and trade blows with Danny Bonaduce. Now the former MVP will step onto the mat and try MMA. In his latest attempt to cash in on his flagging post-baseball career, Canseco is set to make his mixed martial arts debut on May 26 in Japan. The former Oakland A's slugger and tell-all author is fighting South Korean Hong Man Choi on the Dream 9 card in Yokohama Arena. Choi is a 7-foot-2, 330-pound super heavyweight and has a 1-2 record in MMA. "I have no idea if I can do it," Canseco said Thursday night. "It's a tough sport." Canseco has written two books, starred in a pair of reality shows, and had two celebrity boxing bouts since his 17-year baseball career ended. He boxed Bonaduce, a former "Partridge Family" child star, to a majority draw in a match in January. Canseco was listed at 6-4 and 260 pounds for that exhibition bout that featured only three, 1-minute rounds. Canseco, who named names of alleged steroid abusers like himself in his two books, lost to former Philadelphia Eagle Vai Sikahema in his first foray into celebrity boxing. Canseco's girlfriend, Heidi Northcott, said the MMA deal was presented to Canseco about two weeks ago. The 1988 AL MVP is part of a card that includes an eight-man open-weight tournament and is being called the Super Hulk Tournament. By his acknowledgment, the baseball outcast needs the money. It's one reason why Canseco has accepted a wide variety of offbeat jobs to make ends meet. http://sports.espn.go.com/extra/mma/news/story?id=4119724 more

Resolved Question: Why is there another football league starting up, the UFL?

http://www.ufl-football.com/about Mission Statement: "To fulfill the unmet needs of football fans in major markets currently underserved by professional football..." They are having a team in SF down the road from me. We already have the SF 49'ers and the Raiders right across the Bay in Oakland. How is the SF Bay area underserved by professional football? Anyways, I wish them luck but starting in October and going against the NFL will hurt except they are playing on nights the NFL doesn't. But still, why go toe to toe with the NFL? Why not fill the void left after the Superbowl like the Arena League did. What do you think? If they played Feb-March that would fill the void between the Superbowl and baseball right? Do we really need another football game at Thanksgiving? more
