Resolved Question: Can a Kentucky Girl Avoid Absolute Total Misery for 4 years in SF Bay Area?
My husband was recently a subcontractor to a California firm to represent them in Kentucky and he was successful. So much in fact, that the senior partner of the California company flew out to see him wrap up his business and offered him a position in San Francisco. He did so over supper that I was at. Anyway, we all agreed that I am the one that has to be convinced so I will be flying out for the one week break between spring and summer terms at the community college I am attending. They are putting me up at a Japanese sounding name hotel in SF that is supposed to be pretty nice. Anyhow, I am 24 yo and have been married for 5 years. No kids yet. My husband needs to wrap things up here and pass tests to be licensed to practice his profession in CA in any event – so we are looking at a Fall move. I pushed back with him on a permanent move and we agreed that the thing that makes sense is maybe a 4 year stint and try to make as much cash as possible and then move back to Kentucky. So with that rambling preamble here goes my questions: 1)Walnut Creek – opinion??? I want to live (rent) where it half way low crime and convenient to BART and realativley affordable. My research indicates this is it. If you think otherwise, please propose alternative town/area for me to check out. If you know commute time to downtown SF that would be great. 2)The BART website indicates that it takes 45 minutes to make it to downtown SF from Walnut Creek – is this reality or is this a “goal”. Similarly, for journey to Oakland airport that my husband would most likely go to for flying to different parts of California. 3)Are there decent places I can make a day trip from Walnut Creek or suggested alternative town to go hunting and fishing and hiking? I need to get away now and then and clear my head. 4)Now the tough one for me. I have a definite KY accent. Will that automatically make me pond scum? 5)The SF company is already suggesting a Napa valley tour and one of SF; I don’t want to clog up the schedule too much as I want to focus on the topline question of can I do this, but maybe I can do one more fun thing – any suggestions? Oh, I may be staying one night with one of the partner’s wife’s house up on Lake Tahoe. Thanks for your responses. Even partial answers are appreciated. I cannot begin to tell you how frightened of this. My family has lived in Kentucky for over 200 years and I just know it will pull on my heartstrings something fierce. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and do what is best for your family. I am willing to do that if I believe I can avoid just being totally miserable for the next four years. It is the scale of the population that is the scary part for me. There are about twice as many folks in the Bay Area than all of Kentucky.Great answers everyone - this will be tough to choose best answer. Worst case, I get an awesome vacation (I have never been west of the Mississippi River). I will have a rent a car and I'll bring my Garmin so I think Muir Woods may be in the picture. Matter of fact someone I "met" through YA! invited me to brunch north of the Golden Gate bridge - so I can do both on the same morning. And my husband and I were just talking about the investment possibilities of buying a house now as well. Believe it or not our number one investment now is Kentucky liquor licenses!! Bars are going out of business due to the recession. But I guarantee you, once things pick up; those licenses will be valuable. Kentuckians know how to drink. Hello, I'm the president of my 2010 senior class. I come from a small school here in the heart of Oakland, Ca. Our destination for our senior class trip is Tokyo, Japan. At the time of my writing this question, round trip, economy class tickets to Narita Intl are approximately $1300 per person. For all nine of us to fly there, it would cost around $11,700. That doesn't include hotel accomodations and activities or chaperons. I'm hoping the great Yahoo! They don't have a computer so they called me to check for airfare rates & the last time I flew anywhere was when I worked for the airlines, so I never had to check for rates, I always flew standby for free basically. It's N.Y. so we aren't going to rent a car, we'll just take cabs or get rides from his friends or family. I'm planning a vacation to visit 2 amusement parks in California. It might be nice to stay at a place that's in between the two, so we don't have to keep changing hotels. Vallejo and Santa Clara are the 2 locations and seem to be about 68 miles apart. What's a nice and hopefully inexpensive town to stay in between those 2? Is one of the smaller places near San Ramon better than Oakland, etc? Thank you for any specific information you can provide.
