I live in the Moseley area of Birmingham and it's been a non-stop problem here of young youths who I think maybe in the urban gang culture and are making it hard to live here, the area is plagued with crime now because they're selling drugs here, theres loads of heroin and crack users now hanging around the area because it's now the big drug hot-spot and causing anti social behaviour around here and now that my house was in the middle of a break in I think something needs to be done.
Last night I had a knock at the door around 2 in the morning by some police officers had a knock at the door from the police saying there's been a break in over the road from me to only find out I've been a victim too, the backdoors of my house was open and my kitchen was raided when I was asleep and they'e even said it's been a problem in the area and it could get worse if nothing is done.

Violence
JUNE 1998 It happened again on Thursday, May 21. An armed youth strode into his school and opened fire with three guns. In a bloody scene practically lifted from countless gory movies -- or an increasing number of real American tragedies -- the 15-year-old fired 51 bullets at hundreds of human beings. When it was over, two students were dead and 22 injured. Back home, the police found the boy's parents also shot dead.
Whether it’s a slap on the back or a foul word against you-we see violence everywhere. Although we don’t recognize it because we see it so often it is a problem in our society. People understand that it is wrong but do we really know what violence means?
Violence - an act of aggression or intent to hurt one another.
If it is meant to hurt it is violence. But not everyone thinks about that. In 2002, more than 877,700 young people ages 10 to 24 were injured from violent acts. Approximately 1 in 13 required hospitalization. Violence is in homes, school, and jobs and 39% innocent victims are killed each year due to gang violence. Perhaps the unsurprising detail is that 83 percent is school victims, which is what we call school violence. The Kachur study also found that 81 percent of school deaths were homicides, with the remainder being suicides or accidents. The average incidence amounted to about one death per million student-years. Since not all the dead were students, this means a child who spends 13 years in average public schools has one chance in about 107,000 of a violent death in school, on school property, or commuting to school. That’s the average figure. But schools aren’t average places: The homicide rate was nine times higher in urban schools as in rural schools.
So, when you see a kid being hit, called names, or bullied in any manner, remember the meaning of violence and what you can do to be one more person to stop it.

The murder rate among black teenagers has climbed since 2000 even as murders by young whites have scarcely grown or declined in some places, according to a new report.
The celebrated reduction in murder rates nationally has concealed a “worrisome divergence,” said James Alan Fox, a criminal justice professor at Northeastern University who wrote the report, to be released Monday, with Marc L. Swatt. And there are signs, they said, that the racial gap will grow without countermeasures like restoring police officers in the streets and creating social programs for poor youths.
The main racial difference involves juveniles ages 14 to 17. In 2000, 539 white and 851 black juveniles committed murder, according to an analysis of federal data by the authors. In 2007, the number for whites, 547, had barely changed, while that for blacks was 1,142, up 34 percent.
The increase coincided with a rise in the number of murders involving guns, Dr. Fox said. The number of young blacks who were victims of murder also rose in this period.
Murder rates around the country are far below the record highs of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when a crack epidemic spawned violent turf battles.
“Regrettably, as the nation celebrated the successful fight against violent crime in the 1990s, we grew complacent and eased up on our crime-fighting efforts,” the authors said.
The report primarily blames cutbacks in federal support for community policing and juvenile crime prevention, reduced support for after-school and other social programs, and a weakening of gun laws. Cuts in these areas have been felt most deeply in poor, black urban areas, helping to explain the growing racial disparity in violent crime, Dr. Fox said.
But Bruce Western, a sociologist at Harvard, cautioned that the change in murder rates was not large and did not yet show a clear trend. Dr. Western also said that the impact of the reduction in government spending on crime control would have to be studied on a city-by-city basis, and that many other changes, including a sagging economy, could have affected murder rates.
Conservative criminologists place greater emphasis on the breakdown of black families, rather than cuts in government programs, in explaining the travails of black youths.
Much of the increase, experts say, is a product of gang activity, in midsize and large cities.
“The aggregate national murder rate since 2000 has been impressively flat — not to say there haven’t been fluctuations in individual cities,” said Alfred Blumstein, a criminologist at Carnegie Mellon University. “But when you see a spike in a city,” he said, as in Chicago recently, “it very often involves young black males shooting other young black males.”
Dr. Blumstein said that while federal cuts might have contributed to the rise in murders by black teenagers, “I think there are much more endemic problems going on.”
“In the inner city, you have large numbers of kids with no future, hanging out together with a great emphasis on their street credibility,” he said. “They’ll go to great lengths to avenge an insult.” Many of these teenagers do not stay in school, let alone join the Boys Clubs or other after-school programs.
The heightened attention to security after the 9/11 attacks might, paradoxically, have contributed to a decline in crime-fighting.
“One problem we faced was a disinvestment in policing in the post-2001 environment,” said Chief Edward A. Flynn of the Milwaukee police, who served from 2003 to 2006 as secretary of public safety in Massachusetts. “I witnessed homeland security become the monster that ate criminal justice,” Chief Flynn said, as money went to security equipment and communications and the number of police officers fell.
To fight violent crime, Chief Flynn said, the police must be a visible presence in neighborhoods with high crime rates.
From 2000 to 2007, according to the report, murders in Milwaukee by whites ages 14 to 24 rose by 4 percent, while those by blacks rose by 62 percent.
This year, Chief Flynn’s first leading the department, he deployed new teams of officers to the most violent neighborhoods, having them patrol on foot and bicycles, while federal agencies helped bring down some large gangs. The number of murders this year — 70 as of last Friday — is down one-third from last year and is the lowest since 1985.
Still, Chief Flynn said, “any improvements will be temporary unless there’s more investment in the futures of our young people.”

I don`t live in an inner city area, more like the suburbs. Last week there was a mysterious fellow lurking in my neighbours garden, he was hiding from police and was holding not one but two knives. The police found him and pulled out Mp5 machine guns and pointed them in his face for an hour until he surrendered. I work nights and have to walk from my local train station at around midnight everyday. There are a lot of "urban hoody types" moving into the area. Should I carry a knife to protect myself? How about a truncheon? I`d rather get arrested than killed. Wouldn`t you? A young man in Hackney has just died after falling from a balcony after being chased by a gang of youths. Would he still be alive if he had waved a razor sharp, 12 inch hunting knife at them? DISCUSSI should have added that i`m from the uk, I should have also posted in Yahoo uk, sorry about that. I learned in my social psychology class earlier that a lot of bullies, gang members, and street thug/urban-ghetto types who act loud, mean, violent and ignorant don't actually have a low self esteem or feel they are being brought down, but have self esteem high enough to the point of narcissism and think they can get away with anything.
I understand growing up in that environment can be tough, as my father has told me, its a very free-for-all environment. But yet I see towns and cities nearby my own town that don't have to be that way but the youth there CHOOSES to be and act that way because its popular and for an image and the parents allow them to.
And I'm not pointing the finger at any particular race; I'm speaking of white, latino, black, anybody who goes acting like that. Just go to New York, Newark, any of those places.
So why help them if they don't want it?
If you disagree, that's fine, but prove your case. Open my mind. I'm interested to see what others say.I'm not attributing these traits to everyone who lives in the inner city/ghetto because they aren't all like that, but I'm talking of the hoodlums, the gang members, the rude, nasty, violent, kids and teenagers, especially the ones who move from that area into a nice area and bring those behaviors along with them.My father knows because he's been brought up in the ghetto his whole life.

It seems to be something associated with young black dudes. I've heard it used in movies in scenes where cops are approaching black youths. Is this some type of gang speak? I am not a racist and I do know that there are still some issues in equality to be ironed out... but you have to admit that black and white culture is so mixed the divide is all but broken with what's known as the 'urban' scene. Yet still, no white kids have yet to be directly involved with these shootings. Why? Why only black kids?
