In those days, there was a kind of fever that pushed me out of the front door, into the pale, exhaust-fumed park by Broadwater Farm or the grubby road that eventually leads to Enfield: turkish supermarket after chicken restaurant after spare car part shop. Everything in my life felt like it was coming to a mysterious close: I could hardly walk to the end of a street without feeling there was no way to go except back. The dates I’d had that summer had come to nothing, my job was a dead end and the rent cheque was killing me a little more each month. It seemed unlikely that anything could hold much longer. The only question left to ask was what would happen after everything familiar collapsed, but for now the summer stretched between me and that moment.
It was ferociously hot, and the air quality became so bad that by the evening the noise of nearby trains stuttered in in fits and starts, distorted through the shifting air. As I lay in the cool of my room, I could hear my neighbours discussing the world cup and opening beers in their gardens. On the other side, someone was singing an Arabic prayer through the thin wall. I had no money for the pub so I decided to go for a walk.
I found myself wandering aimlessly to the west, past the terrace of chip and kebab shops and laundrettes near the tube station. I crossed the street, and headed into virgin territory - I had never been this way before. Gravel-dashed houses alternated with square 60s offices, and the wide pavements undulated with cracks and litter. I walked and walked, because there was nothing else for me to do, and by degrees the light began to fade.
The mouth of an avenue led me to the verge of a long, greasy A-road that rose up in the far distance, with symmetrical terraces falling steeply down then up again from a distant railway station. There were four benches to my right, interspersed with those strange bushes that grow in the area, whose blossoms are so pale yellow they seem translucent, almost spectral; and suddenly tired, I sat down. I held my head in my hands, feeling like s**t, but a sudden breeze escaped from the terraces and for a moment I lost my thoughts in its unexpected coolness. I looked up and I realised I was sitting in a photograph.
I remembered clearly: this photograph was taken by my mother in 1982, outside our front garden in Hampshire. It was slightly underexposed. I was still sitting on the bench, but the colours and the planes of the road and horizon had become the photo. If I looked hard, I could see the lines of the window ledge in the original photograph were now composed by a tree branch and the silhouetted edge of a grass verge. The sheen of the flash on the window was replicated by bonfire smoke drifting infinitesimally slowly from behind a fence. My sister’s face had been dimly visible behind the window, and -yes- there were pale stars far off to the west that traced out the lines of a toddler’s eyes and mouth.
When I look back at this there’s nothing to grasp, no starting point. I was inside an underexposed photo from 1982 but I was also sitting on a bench in Haringey.
Strongest of all was the feeling of 1982-ness: dizzy, illogical, as if none of the intervening disasters and wrong turns had happened yet. I felt guilty, and inconsolably sad. I felt the instinctive tug back - to school, the memory of shopping malls, cooking, driving in my mother’s car. All gone, gone forever.
I just sat there for a while. I was so tired that I didn’t bother trying to work out what was going on. I was happy just to sit in the photo while it lasted, which wasn’t for long anyway: the light faded, the wind caught the smoke, the stars dimmed under the glare of the streetlamps. I got up and walked away from the squat little benches and an oncoming gang of kids.

The 16-year-old football player at Whites Creek High School had dreams of sprinting down an NFL field someday, but on this night he was running for his life.
The bullets caught up with Brandon and sent him tumbling into a neighbor's bushes. He was dead.
"You lose your youngest son, you feel like your whole life has been taken away from you," said his mother, Kesha Simmons. "The killing has to stop. This gang stuff has to stop."
But it's not stopping. It's getting worse.
Overwhelmed police officers admit gangs have taken hold in all corners of Tennessee to sell drugs, steal and kill. What was once largely an urban crisis has spread to suburban and rural communities.
Middle Tennessee's gangs are no longer just graffiti-spraying juvenile delinquents.
They are armed and dangerous criminal enterprises that recruit young people with the allure of fast money, street status and a sense of belonging — even if the group they join may get them killed or sent to prison.
"People don't understand there are drive-by shootings going on in Murfreesboro," said Ed Yarbrough, U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. "There are witness-elimination killings happening at (the) Hickory Hollow Mall (area). We've got this mindset that suburban areas don't have a gang problem, but we need to wake up to the fact that they do and drive them out."
As in Tennessee, gang activity has spiked nationwide.
Nearly 800,000 gang members and 27,000 gangs operate across the 50 states, a Justice Department survey shows. Some estimates have the figure at 2 million gang members.
While there are no statewide numbers, gangs are present in most of the state's 95 counties, including many communities in the Nashville area, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation report says. Police have identified 5,000 gang members in Davidson County. Murfreesboro estimates 400 to 500. Columbia has 200.

DENVER - Denver Police and the FBI say a series of arrest following a four-month investigation has uncovered a gang-related, bias fueled campaign to attack white males on the 16th Street Mall and in the lower downtown Denver area.
"We have arrested 31 of 35 suspects on a wide range of charges," said Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman.
"These suspects say they are members of the Black Disciples and Rolling 60 Crips and they claim they have even formed a coalition to attack people, usually white men, who were alone in and around downtown. One suspect would hit the victim, trying to drop them to their knees, then the others would also join in, stealing money and other items."

Martha Angulo frequently stares at photos of her 17-year-old son, Rene. Her gaze eventually drifts toward a box of his ashes.
She talks to them, but they don't talk back.
Rene Angulo was a Carson High School senior who aspired to attend college and was expecting a daughter with his high school sweetheart. He was gunned down on Mother's Day by Victor Rodriguez, 24, a gang member with a violent criminal history who had been ordered to be deported back to Mexico.
Deputies said Rodriguez wanted to steal Angulo's Honda, and shot the boy while he was riding in the backseat on U.S. 395 near Bellevue Road.
Authorities said that after Rodriguez shot Angulo in the back of the head and torso, he fired two shots at Wayne Nash, whose family watched in horror from inside their car. Nash was shot in the leg, his femoral artery destroyed, after he stopped to help Angulo, who was lying in the street.
On Wednesday, Rodriguez told Washoe District Judge Connie Steinheimer that he wasn't in his "right mind" when he shot the men.
"I want to take responsibility," he said, "but I'm not going to be up here begging for mercy. I'll do my sentence like a man."
Steinheimer sentenced the father of two to the maximum term of life in prison without parole for the first-degree murder of Angulo, and the maximum of 60 years for the attempted murder with a deadly weapon of Nash. She also ordered he pay more than $63,000 in restitution, mostly for Nash's medical bills.
Magaly Sanchez had been dating Angulo for five years and is pregnant with his daughter. She said Angulo was her world, and their biggest wishes were to attend prom together and graduate.
The day he was killed was "my worst living nightmare of my life. All my dreams fell apart," she said.
Sanchez, Angulo's mother and his brother, Mario ,pleaded with Steinheimer to give Rodriguez the maximum punishment and praised Nash for trying to help Angulo.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Dan Greco said this case is an example of the weakness of the country's borders. He said Rodriguez has been in the criminal justice system since he was 18 years old.
In 2001, he was arrested for being an illegal immigrant and was ordered deported. In 2003, he was charged with assault with a firearm, burglary and criminal threat charges in Los Angeles. Before he was sentenced, he fled to Northern Nevada and in 2004, was arrested for being an accessory to murder in Douglas County. Greco said he received probation in both the Nevada and California cases.
"If he would have obeyed the judge's deportation order and not have returned to the country, Rene Angulo would still be alive and Mr. Nash would not have been injured," Greco said. "This is the seventh time I've had to tell a family how sorry I am that their son was the victim of the murder and their killer was an illegal alien.
"It's sad and tragic, but our borders are not secure."
Nash said he felt blessed to be alive. He also said he has been financially devastated by medical bills.

Dear Amelia, I don’t miss those coal mines back in Alabama, I don’t miss your father dictating me and telling me I can’t see you. The only thing I miss in that old city is you. I still think of you every day. You know, the only reason I moved to New York City was so that I could forget about you. There ain’t nothing that’ll ever make me forget about you doll face, not even this tragic depression. One day, when I have the money, I’m gonna rescue you from that coal town, there ain’t anything there for you. I’ll bring you back here, to New York City.
I got a great deal on a nice apartment, although your father would call it a dump. It’s located down the street from a cozy little theater. I live in apartment number 182 on level eight. There’s a swanky balcony that out looks roof tops. Right behind the complex is a dome building where the less fortunate get their food for the day. I got myself a crazy job that I know you wouldn’t approve of darling but its better then your fathers coal mine. I define gravity, I work on the edge and, if I die, at least I’ll get the chance to fly. Ever hear of Radio Corporation of America? Well I’ll tell you about it either way, it is a complex that stands seventy stories high and guess who’s working on building this monster? Me. I work with ten other Working-Class men, Jimmy, Paul, Tony, Mark, Robert, Jordan, Charlie, Gary, Noah and Louie. We work hard for our pay no matter how little we get. This aint no luxury job but it pays the bills.
Oh, the view from up here is fantastic, granted, with any wrong step I could end up being a big one big splat on the sidewalk in Central Manhattan New York City. No worries though, I’m as acrobatic as a cat on these metal beams. When I look out on the city from up here you can see everything for miles. You can see Central Park with all the trees and the river that splits through the city. Fog settles on the ground eight hundred and fifty feet below us. It is the most beautiful view I will ever see. To my right and down two hundred and fifty-six meters is my apartment and I can see it from way up here clear as day. When our lunch break comes around I sit in the very middle of a large beam with the boys and we have ourselves a little smoke break to calm our nerves. The corporation provides us with white colored box lunches.
Louie made a bad choice today and drank a little bit too much if you know what I mean and took a flying leap towards the ground. Poor Louie, we’ll miss that old chum. Luckily, today ended up also being picture day, I paid ten cents for that picture of me and the gang. That black and white picture means the world to me Amelia, but you mean much more then the world.

Off into the street where I met all sorts of people from different backgrounds, different way of living and different attitudes.
It didn’t take me long to fit in as I considered myself as they say: “as tough as old boots.”
During the day we mugged easy targets, store things from the shops, and bullied students.
During the night we slept rough sometimes we didn’t sleep at all.
But deep down my heart this was not what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to become a very educated person and a great leader just like George Bush* or Margaret Thatcher *.
One day we (me and my gang) went to a local school not that they didn’t know us there, they did. We were household names; infamous. We knew it was very risky to bully students from that school us we heard rumours that we were on the lookout by the police the head teacher had reported us. But it was just one of our biggest challenges and we wanted to prove that we were the toughest gang in town.
We were on the school grounds waiting for our target. A car drove by, we saw a very attractive young woman, she was dressed to thrill, she had a tender face; her eyes were blue.
We could tell by her dressing that she came from a very rich family. When she got off the car we followed her to her classroom. We snatched her bag as she was entering into the classroom and then we runaway.
Some passerby students looked scared as they witnessed what had happened. I felt a bit of remorse after we had opened the bag and found some valuable things and what looked like a family album photo. But I didn’t show it as I thought that my gang members would have thought that I was going soft.
We waited for her outside the school campus to mug her yet again as we believed that she had other valuables with her but we were in for a shock as she approached us with no fear.
Who is the gang leader? She asked. Who is asking? I questioned. You must be the one. She said. You don’t look frightened for someone who has been mugged? I remarked. She said knowledge is power. What do you mean? What makes you think I am not thinking of punching you in the face? I asked. It is because you want my money. She said. I will give you a deal. I will pay for your school fees… I know you are a good guy CJ or is it James?! She said.
I was shocked to hear her mention my name especially James as I had not used that name for years I had been going by the name CJ. I knew someone had bleached our code of conduct. I suspected the one who had bleached the information but I didn’t want to believe it as he was my first hand man the one I trusted the most.
I felt betrayed and I thought of leaving the gang. She gave me her number and said. “I know all about you.” I felt powerless - weak.
I rang her in the evening from a telephone box and I accepted her offer to pay for my school fees.
As time went by I felt deeply in love with her and my dark side was subsiding.
She knew I was into her so everything she demanded was done. If she said STOP - SMOKING. I stopped. STOP this … I stopped.
She was good at drama that sometimes she’d asked me to rehearse her scripts with me.
I became more involved in drama too. That when I was 14 I wrote a script which my drama teacher liked and it was performed at the end of the school year.
Since then I have ghost written scripts which you’d never believe I am the one who wrote them.
She promised me that if I were to be involved in a fight again she’d dump me. Unfortunately one day when we went to a gig one of my former gang member kissed my girl on the neck. My favourite kissing place. I punched him in the face and wrestled him to the ground I continuously stamp on him while he was on the ground and the gal ended the relationship.
The police arrested me and I was released with only a caution.
The girl still contacts me and she’s happy that not only I changed but that I am still writing scripts and I am back at home

Even mishandling the qurun is seen as a “crime. As this goes on we huddle in fear of what they will do next, and they laugh at us and call us a “paper tiger”.
So what do we do? The unelected supreme court gives them “terrorists rights” to sue us while they behead and kill us “back home”. And we prosecute our own soldiers for not coddling them.
REAL REAL SMART, isn’t it? But this isn’t the start of this insanity---
We could have won in Korea with nuclear weapons, but liberals panicked the administration, claiming Russia would nuke us if we nuked Korea. The result: 33,000 yanks died, nukes stood idle, the war was a stalemate, and now Korea comes back with its own nukes, threatening us with them, which never would have happened had we nuked them when we had the chance. We went to war in Iraq but pulled out when it was half over, leaving the regime in power. The result: another war had to be fought, which we thought we won, but yanks die daily as nukes sit idle. Some “victory” we won.
Now we are blindly led to believe moslem nations, such as Pakistan will assist us in rooting out al queda. How long will this “pearl harbor-9/11 mentality” of sitting back, doing nothing but procrastinating persist? Must we wait until they blow us up, kill our children, brothers, sisters and parents before we finally realize that we are justified in totally annihilating them and ending their threat to us for once and for all?
Did we spend those untold billions for marching down Main St. on the 4th of July while yanks die daily and the arsenal sits idle, or was there another more utilitarian purpose to build that arsenal and protect ourselves? How long must we keep huddling in fear of what they will do to us next?

Tens of thousands of fake documents were sold along Roosevelt Avenue for years by two criminal organizations, authorities said Tuesday. Two major identity theft "mills" were shut down as a result of the raids.Forty-one people were arrested on charges they sold fake social security cards, driver’s licenses and other documents often used in identity-theft scams. Some of those arrested are gang members, police said. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown displayed hundreds of fake documents as well as the computers used to make them at his morning press conference.
"These documents allow individuals to live, work, operate motor vehicles, open lines of credit and even obtain government benefits - under assumed names or by using identity of others," Brown said.
Federal Secret Service agents joined the NYPD and State Police in helping take down the operation. Among the alleged ringleaders, a husband and wife team from Los Angeles who, police said, provided the raw materials to help make the fake documents.
Police said some gang members in Jackson Heights helped produce and sell the fake cards at $50 each. Police said money raised was used to support other gang activities.
Prosecutors said the document rings consist of a boss, a cutter, runners and street sellers. Sellers get photos and information from customers and pass it on to runners who go to "the mill" to have the needed fake document made.
Among those charged, Edgar Cardenas of 95th Street in Queens. Prosecutors said he headed one of the major rings.
Other high-ranking suspects named include Lauro Benitez, Geraldo Lima and Miguel Ramirez Rivera.
Investigators said as they pore through seized documents, they would notify the Federal Trade Commission if they find victims whose identities and personal information had been stolen.
Officials have also notified the Joint Terrorism Task Force to try to make sure none of the fake documents were being used for terror-related matters.
Officials stressed there is no link to terrorism at this time.
Authorities said the overall investigation continues and they expect to make additional arrests.

Pamphlets with the warnings were found at several shops in Inayat Kalay in Pakistan's Bajur tribal region near the Afghan border, said Bacha Khan, a barber in the market town.
"Barbers! Correct yourselves," said the handwritten, Pashto-language notes, one of which was obtained by The Associated Press.
"Any barber shop where acts against Shariah (Islamic law) — shaving or cutting of beards — are seen, are given a final warning to stop this anti-Shariah work and if they do not stop, they should take responsibility for whatever harm they come to," it said.
The pamphlets were unsigned. However, Khan said he believed the warnings were from mujahedeen, or holy warriors — a term often used to describe Islamic militants.
He said two dozen barbers had responded by posting notices in their shops asking customers not to insist on getting a shave.
"We do not want to come to harm," Khan said. "If this work is against Shariah, we will stop it."
The warning echoed a decree issued under Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime ordering all men to grow beards, and it could reinforce concern that Pakistan's border areas are undergoing a "Talibanization" because of the presence of militants and radical preachers.
Security officials say Taliban and other militants suspected of attacks on Afghan and foreign troops on the other side of the border are active in Bajur.
Many Taliban fled to Pakistan when U.S.-led forces drove them out of Afghanistan in 2001-02. Before their ouster, Taliban vice squads roamed the streets and beat those suspected of trimming their beard. The Taliban's harsh interpretation of Islam saw them also ban women and girls from work and school and outlaw activities such as kite-flying and chess.

Four members of a Latino gang in Highland Park were found guilty Tuesday of unleashing a barrage of assaults and killings to push African Americans out of the predominantly Latino community in northeast Los Angeles.
The verdicts in a downtown federal courtroom marked the first time a street gang had been convicted of breaking federal hate crime laws, traditionally employed against white supremacist groups like skinheads and the Ku Klux Klan.
"I'm glad the truth is out," said Luisa Prudhomme, whose 21-year-old son, Anthony, was killed when Avenues members allegedly kicked open his door and shot him in the head as he lay on a futon.
Among crimes committed by the defendants from 1995 to 2001, according to testimony, were shooting a 15-year-old boy riding a bike; hitting a jogger in the head with a pistol; drawing outlines of human bodies in chalk on a family's driveway, along with a racial slur; and knocking a woman off her bike, threatening her husband with a box cutter, and saying, "You niggers have been here long enough."
...Martinez asked if anyone wanted to kill a black man, three of them jumped out, ran up to Wilson's windows and opened fire, witnesses said. A shot to the head killed him before the car had even rolled to a stop.
Another black man, Christopher Bowser, was harassed and beaten up by the defendants for years. In December 2000, he filed a police report saying Martinez had assaulted and robbed him at a bus stop near his house. A week later, Bowser was shot to death at the same bus stop on Figueroa Street.
[...]prosecutors said they had a witness who would testify that the Mexican Mafia, which controls many local Latino gangs, ordered the Avenues to carry out the attacks on African Americans.
Five days later, Avila told a fellow gang member, in a taped phone call from jail, that he and Martinez had been beating up mayates for weeks, using a Spanish-language epithet for blacks. After mentioning Bowser, he added, "That fool is gone." Avila was convicted in state court of the murder.
Throughout the nearly monthlong trial, defense attorneys tried to discredit the prosecutors' key witnesses — two imprisoned members of the Avenues who testified against their brethren — as well as two police officers who took the case to the FBI and U.S. attorney. The lawyers introduced black witnesses who said they had never had any problems in Highland Park.
And in a bid to show there was no gang policy of racism, they brought in two black women — the girlfriend of defendant Saldana when he lived in Arizona and the wife of an Avenues member who had nothing to do with the conspiracy and only vaguely knew the defendants.
As evidenced by the verdict, the jury did not buy the defense's line.
The defendants sat casually throughout the testimony, wearing shirts, ties, sweaters and reading glasses, hair neatly combed.
But prosecutors tarnished their junior executive image by displaying photos showing their hidden tattoos on a screen directly above their heads. Jurors studied the large chest tattoos of the gang's logo — a bullet-pierced skull wearing a fedora and a fur collar. More damaging: the slogan "43 Kills for Thrills" etched on Martinez's shaved head.
