Major Findings:
Police and the justice system are not biased against minorities.
Crime Rates
Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.
Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate.
The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic.
Interracial Crime
Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving blacks and whites, blacks commit 85 percent and whites commit 15 percent.
Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black.
Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.

Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.
Incarceration
Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million.
Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely.

Yesterday I visited a small independent school in one of the poorest part of the city of Cali, Colombia.
The school is part of a formal, but small, foundation and cares for literally the most abused kids from 3 to 16. It is well-run, modest and is often the only source of food, encouragement and hope for many of the kids. The stories I heard from the in-house psychologist were horrific: incest, armed 7 year old gang members, extreme trauma and deprivation. The school of 130 kids is run by a Catholic nun (somewhat renegade compared to her brethern it seems) and teachers who accept to live on below minimum wage. They also ran a hostel but have temporarily closed it because of financial constraints. The nun made an interesting point with regard to the boys in the school ...that the school is the only reason they are not already in violent street gangs - and thus 'we are helping reduce a vicious cycle of violence here'.
I want to help (for free) the school raise funds and also in an advisory capacity. Right now however they have to deal with basic fundraising and making up a major deficit next year. I love kiva.or but I don't think it is appropriate in this case because the school does not produce goods or services for sale.

I see "change", everyday, things are bad, worse than I ever had seen my neighborhood on a daily basis, I see and read about muggings, more burglaries, the elderly and child abuse, the home invasions, i see the emptiness in childrens eyes, i see all of the illegal aliens stroll into town, i see thefts from businesses, auto thefts, i see gangs and violence on the streets, I see the long lines at the unemployment office, the soup kitchens are booming business, I see the once hard working people now desperate people struggling to get by, i see the pain and disgust on people's faces, the jobless to homeless (hey buddy do you got a quarter? ), i see people digging through restaurant garbage bins and dumpsters to eat....and the drug problem is crazier than ever. CAN'T THE U.S. government really help us, and protect our communities from home grown terrorsim with these gang members???? Why don't they do something right here at home before it's too late.... these issues eventually will adversly affect all of us. Do they care? There's no funding, no tax cuts, no incentives, but the politicans line their pockets with 787 Billion in taxpayer stimulus money.... leaving us high and dry, how about the social security ponzi scheme, and the drained medicare program?? Don't these politicans see America falling apart from within? The collapse of infrastructure, the downfall of our communities. Maybe, that is their plan, maybe this is their goal? These politicans are the same people representing us, a voice of the people, they're calling the shots and determining what's good for us. The polticians fly first class and don't have to put up with any of the non-sense, such as, the duck and cover run and hide from gun shots spewing through the air in the city, the high speed chases, the stabbings, THEY SIMPLY DON'T CARE.... I'm afraid to drive down the street in broad daylight let alone walking on the street at night. WE as a country is in deep shet.. we will refer to the USA as the United Ghettos of America, becoming one big slum. God, what did we do? What are our kids going to have? What kind of future is there? RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Suspected drug traffickers shot down a police helicopter and set fire to five buses and a school in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, killing two policemen, police and media said.
It is one of the worst recent outbreaks of violence in Rio and comes two weeks after the city was awarded the 2016 Olympic Games, despite worries over its high levels of violence and poor security.
Traffickers set fire to the buses in response to a police operation against them, the O Globo network said on its website, which showed pictures of the destroyed helicopter and buses on fire. It reported that three suspected criminals were also killed.
"The helicopter was hit by criminals and the pilot made a forced landing on a football pitch," Major Oderlei Santos of the military police told Reuters.
The helicopter had been carrying six police officers as part of an operation in one of Rio's hundreds of slums, which are dominated by heavily armed drug gangs, police said.
