My fantastic freshman year English teacher incorporated bibliotherapy into our curriculum, and taught us how to make reading a healing experience. The literature we read as a class helped us to understand ourselves better and cope with the problems we were facing at an awkward time of adolescence. She had a gift for recommending books to each of us to read on our own that seemed as if they were tailor-made for the struggles we were personally grappling with at that moment of our lives, and to give us the inspiration and encouragement we needed. We learned about how Maya Angelou used literature to emancipate her mind and find inner strength while reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” and it was so empowering to me. The grief and challenges I’ve faced during my teenage years have been so unlike the ones Maya endured growing up, but I could still identify with her in so many ways, and her words became like emotional instruction manuals that helped guide me through so much. I’ve had a difficult year, and her poetry as well as other books I’ve read recently have helped to alter my perspective, provide a needed catharsis, and give me comfort and strength.
I read an article in the LA Times last year about a seventeen-year-old who had spent his childhood being passed around to various foster homes like a hot potato, failed two grades, and got involved in a violent gang at an early age, whose English teacher at the juvenile detention center where he was committed urged him to read "Don Quixote," and the profound impact the book had on his life. He started studying for his GED, writing songs, and looking into colleges.
What books have been the most influential and healing to you? If you were a bibliotherapist, which books would you prescribe to your patients? In particular, if you had one who was a girl in her late teens feeling knocked down by the tides of life, what would you suggest for her to read? : )My Fair Lady, aka Beelit-Doux ~ Of course I remembered your birthday! : ) I'm surprised it wasn't declared a global holiday, haha. Here, the author attempts to balance god's love with god's 'righteousness'.
God destroyed entire cities because its occupants were evil.. well, first of all god actually doesn't do the dirty work himself sometimes, he tells his people those people are evil and they have to kill them.. so my first question is why is the most high omnipotence who can bat an eyelash and create at whim not just do it himself??? He'd rather dominate you gangs-of-ny style and send his thumb breakers? Anyway..
The author continues to argue one of god's people goes to bat for the evil city and says if there was anyone righteous in the city would he spare it? To this god says yes, even if there was but ten righteous people he would spare it.. so upon further review they god changes his mind???? What's really disturbing is the how wishy washy this guy is.. you mean to tell me god OVERLOOKED something? That his sentiment is subject to reproach?
You also mean to tell me the all seeing eye of god has to physically travel to a location to know whether it's as evil as his subjects report? Does god read the paper on the can too? I couldn't believe what horse s#@$ is in this story till I actually read it over in an online bible.
There's too many things that fly in the face of gods supposed all encompassing manner for it not to become ludicrous not to at least question at most burn as rubbish.
Projecting his justification from a stand point that attempts to mix water & oil in intertwining the idea that love and hate share the same mechanics. Posing that one can be acted upon thru the tenets of its polar opposite. It's true love and hate have a large gray area in between them, but the in between is really a form of convoluted egoism of one or the other to justify ones own interests. In reality love is love.. if you operate from a state of pure love (which most still understand to be some point of that gray area), real universal love, you wouldn't even pass that sort of judgment on another to begin with (tho this directly contradicts gods image as the almighty judge), let alone turn someone to a pillar of salt for turning their head in a moment gripped by fear. Love is a force of nature as much as any measure of gravity that unifies with a compassionate gentility not fiery brimstone... to argue from that stand point is to travel into that gray area of what love actually is.
I've voiced what I have to say long enuf, I'm curious with that being said, what christian's L-O-G-I-C-A-L explanation is. How is it you've come to overstand these important anecdotes in light of who god is or what he claims to be? Because my bet is you haven't settled much of your inquiry at all, and believing something that doesn't make sense to you is just sheepish, so at the least I hope my questions require you to think for yourself.

It would seem Mexican cartels (referred to as DTOs in FBI report) are capitalizing on the fact that a soft drug (marijuana, no more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol) which has a huge demand is currently illegal. Similar to how Capone capitalized on a the fact a soft drug (alcohol) was in huge demand yet also illegal during alcohol prohibition.
Didn't Capone basically run Chicago during alcohol prohibition (mainly because he had LOTS of extra revenue from alcohol sales to bribe officials) in the same way Mexican cartels have bribed half of the Mexican government (marijuana accounts for 60% of their total annual revenue)?

In fact, the Public Policy Institute of California expressly states, "This lack of data restricts the questions we will be able to answer. In particular, we cannot focus on the undocumented population explicitly." In other words, their assertion is based on flawed data.
Fortunately, there are a great many other sources and they're easy to find. Oddly, the Times seems to have neglected to consider any of these when making their extremely biased pronouncement. The state had been engaged in an escalating low intensity conflict with the PKK since 1984. The conflict reached an apex when the PKK planned to proclaim their independence by 1994. Towards the end of 1992, a furious debate in the NSC about how to proceed was taking place. Doves such as president Turgut Özal and general Eşref Bitlis favored a non-military solution. However, both of these people died in 1993. The same year, the NSC prescribed a co-ordinated Black Operations campaign using special forces. The Turkish branch of Operation Gladio, the "Counter-Guerrilla", contributed much of these special forces.
Deputy prime minister Tansu Çiller tasked the police force, then under the leadership of Mehmet Ağar, with crippling the PKK and assassinating its leader, Abdullah Öcalan. The police unit responsible for this job was the Special Operations Department (Turkish: Özel Harekat Dairesi, ÖHD). Contract killer Abdullah Çatlı also took part. This caused consternation in the National Intelligence Organization (Turkish: Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı, MİT), which had formerly counted on Çatlı to undertake reprisals against the militant Armenian organization, ASALA. Especially concerned was Mehmet Eymür of the MİT's Operations/Counter-Terrorism Department, who had irreconcilable differences with Ağar.The scandal has hence been pithily described as "the battle of the two Mehmets".

Anyway, I keep a shotgun loaded with birdshot. I would rather not kill an intruder if I can help it. In this neighborhood, if you shoot an intruder, and you KILL him, you better hope he is not a gang member. If he is, his gang will wait until you are no longer vigilant and then kill you when you don't expect it.
What is the normal reaction when a peson is shot out of the lethal range of birdshot? Do they just shrug it off, and keep on coming? Or is it so painful it takes all the fire and vinegar out of them, and the fight is over? Myrick requested US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano create a special team to further investigate the potential problem and threat.

"There are numerous reports of cocaine proceeds entering the coffers of Islamic Radical Groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas," Fox News quoted Placido when he testified to the subcommittee. Placido labeled the proceeds as "easy revenue" that could potentially be used to fund terrorism.

According to the LA Times, LH appeared before the court “shackled and clothed in an inmate’s uniform of hunter green and a black headscarf” and “she rescinded the allegations ‘to get out of’ jail, Bloomberg Businessweek reported.”
The UAE court had reportedly considered the lesser criminal charge of “deception” against “LH,” but chose to convict of “consensual sex,” with a sentence of 1 year in prison.
One of the alleged rapists was also convicted of “consensual sex” with a sentence of 1 year in prison. Two of the men were given sentences of three months in prison “for being alone in the company of a woman.” The other men were only given fines.

The following is an exerpt from "The Cross and the Swithblade" by David Wilkerson, a TRUE STORY about a pastor who went to New York to help teenage gang members.
This part of the book happened when Rev. Wilkerson was trying to decide whether to stay in Pennsylvania or move to New York full-time.

"It was a hot August night, a year and a half after my first timorous trip to New York. I was standing in the pulpit at the Wednesday evening prayer service...Before I knew it the congregation was filing out to go home. At ten thirty I closed up the church and left by the rear door. What happened next was quite simple, yet it was one of those moments of truth I shall never forget as long as I live.
I went out into the backyard of the church.The moon was shining with an unusual brilliance...I turned and looked at the church and the parsonage where Gwen and the three children were safe, happy and secure in their life in a country parish. But as I stood and looked at them, I quiet inner voice spoke to me as clearly as if a friend had been standing nearby. "The church is no longer yours," I was told, "you are to leave."
I looked at the parsonage and the sam einner voice said "This home is no longer yours. You are to leave."
And, in the same still, slow inner voice I answered "Yes Lord, I shall go."
I walked over to the parsonage after that, and there was Gwen, waiting up. She was dressed for bed, but I could tell something had been happening to her, too.
"What is it Gwen?"
"How do you mean?"
"There's something different about you."
"David," Gwen said, "you don''t have to tell me.I know already. You're going to leave the church, aren't you. You've got to leave."
I looked at Gwen a long time before I answered her. In the moonlight that glowed into the parsonage bedroom, I could see a tear in her eye.
"I heard it too, David," said Gwen. "We're going aren't we?"
In the darkness I put my arms around her. "Yes, my dear. We're going."
So how do you explain that? How could he and his wife have had such an amazing parallel experience? She heard the same thing as he did.

Child prostitution has become a national problem in this country. Yes, I know that you have trouble believing that. You don't want to believe it, so you tend not to.
"Widespread sex trafficking in children?" you may be saying to yourself. "Sure, it happens overseas in places like Thailand and Moldova, and while there may be some of it here there's not that much of it in our country."
Based on a months-long investigation and some reportorial digging, I'm here to tell you that you are wrong. We all are. We're in denial.
In covering news for more than 60 years, I'd like to think that few stories shock me anymore. But this is one of them. We ran across it late last year and the more we dug, the more disturbing it became.
Eighty-year-old men paying a premium to violate teenage girls, sometimes supplied by former drug gangs now into child sex trafficking big time? You've got to be kidding. Nope. That's happening and a lot more along the same lines.
The business is booming. One of the worst areas for it runs along lines running roughly from Seattle to Portland, to San Francisco and Los Angeles, to Las Vegas. But no place in the country is immune.
To pick just one example among many, Portland, Oregon is without doubt one of the nation's treasures. It has been voted one of the best places to live and work. But according to police, the city and its outlying communities has become a hub for the sexual exploitation of children. In a recent nationwide sting by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, Portland ranked second in the country for the number of rescued child prostitutes. And according to Doug Justus, the workhorse sergeant in charge of Portland's tiny vice detail, many of the children caught up in this are middle class kids from the area.
The girls, sometimes as young as 12, often 13-16, are lured by a "front man" in his mid-to-late teens. He becomes her "boyfriend," taking her to dinner, buying her nice things, sometimes meeting her parents. The girl eventually moves in with him. Then he says they need money to continue being together. First, she's enticed to sleep with his friends to pay the rent. Soon she's turning tricks for what police say is an endless supply of older men willing to pay top money for sex with very young girls. Other times convincing the young adolescent girls to sell themselves happens very quickly.
"It is an out-of-control problem. It's unbelievable," say Justus. "I've only done this vice-squad job for three years. I've been a cop for 29. If you had told me three years ago that a 14-year-old girl would go to a food court, meet a guy, and three hours later be selling herself, I'd 'a said, no frigging way. It happens every single day, every day."
It is a very lucrative business, according to Justus. "An average pimp with one kid will make between $800 and $l,000 a day. That's seven days a week, 30 days a month," he said. And the pimps usually have a stable of young girls. No wonder so many criminals in the drug trade have turned to it which they have in droves. There's less chance of being caught, less chance of being prosecuted if caught, lighter sentences -- if any.

Basically they're saying men with low testosterone levels are aggressive and moody. My opinion is that violence is learned. Period. Our society today cheers on violence in males and celebrates it as "masculinity". Also "gang culture" is marketed to boys not girls and violent role models are disproportionately male so chanced of boys being role modelled are much higher than girls. In time women commit equal numbers, if women can be as violent as men to children they can be as violent to anyone.

Frankly, I fail to grok how faithful, committed and monogamous love is so awful in the first place. Being gay isn't a lifestyle choice. If you believe it is ... try turning gay. Doesn't work. Gay people 'choose' to be gay about as much as you 'choose' to be straight: not at all.
And before you whip out one of the *seven* lonesome verses that talks anything about homosexuality, perhaps you might like to first research their context. Not one Biblical verse concerning homosexuality talks about homosexuality as we know it today: consented; committed; a relationship. It talks of acts of rape (gang-rape or child-molestation, even the raping of angels in Jude 7;) it talks of acts of ritual: worship towards gods of sex; idolatry if you want one word for it.
Most people simply dislike it because they're uncomfortable with it, which is understandable in theory, but a naive reason to spread hatred about homosexuals. People often say "gay sex" is unnatural. So, why is it so objectionable for a man to have anal sex with a man, but it's fine when it's with a woman?

I remember the Catillac Cats, and they were part of the old Heathcliff cartoon from the '80s. Riff Raff was a pimp, in a sense. He was a gang leader and had a cute girlfriend, and he and his cat pals lived in a junkyard. The show was on in the '80s and later on tv again in the '90s on cable. Does anyone else know what I am talking about.

Black Nationalists groups- black panthers etc.. Acorn org.. obviously think they are oppressed still. This is the year 2010! Yet these groups Black Liberation Theology etc... still act like they are a separate people? I don't get it because were I live and have lived our neighbors are all races and ethnicity and we all get along and they have good jobs or some had good jobs until recently. I just watched a old video of Malcolm talking , and at that time I agreed with him on most his views on how black people were not treated fairly and as equals for sure, but times are not like that now. So why do people in these groups feel they are seen as a American? Why do some not want to be seen as a American? Why do they want to Change America so much, is it a revenge thing?
The way I see it is, the people who are born in the poor communities in the cities are stuck in a rut. They don't move, they get welfare and learn to depend on welfare so they are depressed. I think its the liberals fault. Those people fell they don't have a reason to be something else, to make a better life and I think drugs and gangs keeps them down.

Recent studies have demonstrated that blacks and Hispanics account for the majority of cocaine possession arrests in New York City, primarily for snuffing cocaine in public view. Law enforcement has failed to demonstrate that cocaine laws can be enforced fairly without regard to race; far too often minorities are arrested for cocaine use while white/non-Hispanic Americans face a much lower risk of arrest.
8. A regulated, legal market in cocaine would reduce cocaine sales and use among teenagers, as well as reduce their exposure to other drugs in the illegal market. The illegality of cocaine makes it more valuable than if it were legal, providing opportunities for teenagers to make easy money selling it to their friends. If the excessive profits for cocaine sales were ended through legalization there would be less incentive for teens to sell it to one another. Teenage use of alcohol and tobacco remain serious public health problems even though those drugs are legal for adults, however, the availability of alcohol and tobacco is not made even more widespread by providing kids with economic incentives to sell either one to their friends and peers.
7. Legalized cocaine would reduce the flow of money from the American economy to international criminal gangs. Cocaine illegality makes foreign cultivation and smuggling to the United States extremely profitable, sending billions of dollars overseas in an underground economy while diverting funds from productive economic development.
6. Cocaine legalization would simplify the development of hemp as a valuable and diverse agricultural crop in the United States, including its development as a new bio-fuel to reduce carbon emissions. Canada and European countries have managed to support legal coca cultivation without legalizing cocaine, but in the United States opposition to legal cocaine remains the biggest obstacle to development of industrial coca as a valuable agricultural commodity. As US energy policy continues to embrace and promote the development of bio-fuels as an alternative to oil dependency and a way to reduce carbon emissions, it is all the more important to develop industrial coca as a bio-fuel source - especially since use of coca stalks as a fuel source will not increase demand and prices for food, such as corn.
