Open Question: If you were a bibliotherapist, what books would you “prescribe” for your patients?

If you're unfamiliar with bibliotherapy you can read a basic description of it on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bibliotherapy My fantastic freshman year English teacher incorporated bibliotherapy into our curriculum, and taught us how to make reading a healing experience. The literature we read as a class helped us to understand ourselves better and cope with the problems we were facing at an awkward time of adolescence. She had a gift for recommending books to each of us to read on our own that seemed as if they were tailor-made for the struggles we were personally grappling with at that moment of our lives, and to give us the inspiration and encouragement we needed. We learned about how Maya Angelou used literature to emancipate her mind and find inner strength while reading “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” and it was so empowering to me. The grief and challenges I’ve faced during my teenage years have been so unlike the ones Maya endured growing up, but I could still identify with her in so many ways, and her words became like emotional instruction manuals that helped guide me through so much. I’ve had a difficult year, and her poetry as well as other books I’ve read recently have helped to alter my perspective, provide a needed catharsis, and give me comfort and strength. I read an article in the LA Times last year about a seventeen-year-old who had spent his childhood being passed around to various foster homes like a hot potato, failed two grades, and got involved in a violent gang at an early age, whose English teacher at the juvenile detention center where he was committed urged him to read "Don Quixote," and the profound impact the book had on his life. He started studying for his GED, writing songs, and looking into colleges. What books have been the most influential and healing to you? If you were a bibliotherapist, which books would you prescribe to your patients? In particular, if you had one who was a girl in her late teens feeling knocked down by the tides of life, what would you suggest for her to read? : )My Fair Lady, aka Beelit-Doux ~ Of course I remembered your birthday! : ) I'm surprised it wasn't declared a global holiday, haha. Take your time answering. I extended the question so you won't have to rush. more

Open Question: Serious question for christians?

Someone posted this website: http://godandscience.org as a good source of clarity on biblical contradictions that just seem to make no logical sense, and where opposers draw the majority of their material from.... ok, so I peeped this site and I read the article posted why the god of the old testament went around on a tirade for like 12 books.. this is it here: http://godandscience.org/apologetics/killergod.html Here, the author attempts to balance god's love with god's 'righteousness'. God destroyed entire cities because its occupants were evil.. well, first of all god actually doesn't do the dirty work himself sometimes, he tells his people those people are evil and they have to kill them.. so my first question is why is the most high omnipotence who can bat an eyelash and create at whim not just do it himself??? He'd rather dominate you gangs-of-ny style and send his thumb breakers? Anyway.. The author continues to argue one of god's people goes to bat for the evil city and says if there was anyone righteous in the city would he spare it? To this god says yes, even if there was but ten righteous people he would spare it.. so upon further review they god changes his mind???? What's really disturbing is the how wishy washy this guy is.. you mean to tell me god OVERLOOKED something? That his sentiment is subject to reproach? You also mean to tell me the all seeing eye of god has to physically travel to a location to know whether it's as evil as his subjects report? Does god read the paper on the can too? I couldn't believe what horse s#@$ is in this story till I actually read it over in an online bible. There's too many things that fly in the face of gods supposed all encompassing manner for it not to become ludicrous not to at least question at most burn as rubbish. Projecting his justification from a stand point that attempts to mix water & oil in intertwining the idea that love and hate share the same mechanics. Posing that one can be acted upon thru the tenets of its polar opposite. It's true love and hate have a large gray area in between them, but the in between is really a form of convoluted egoism of one or the other to justify ones own interests. In reality love is love.. if you operate from a state of pure love (which most still understand to be some point of that gray area), real universal love, you wouldn't even pass that sort of judgment on another to begin with (tho this directly contradicts gods image as the almighty judge), let alone turn someone to a pillar of salt for turning their head in a moment gripped by fear. Love is a force of nature as much as any measure of gravity that unifies with a compassionate gentility not fiery brimstone... to argue from that stand point is to travel into that gray area of what love actually is. I've voiced what I have to say long enuf, I'm curious with that being said, what christian's L-O-G-I-C-A-L explanation is. How is it you've come to overstand these important anecdotes in light of who god is or what he claims to be? Because my bet is you haven't settled much of your inquiry at all, and believing something that doesn't make sense to you is just sheepish, so at the least I hope my questions require you to think for yourself. more

Resolved Question: Why does the mainstream media ignore hate crimes?

Why does the mainstream media ignore hate crimes being committed against black people by Mexican gang members? If it were white people doing this it would be all over the media and black leaders would be in an uproar. http://www.alternet.org/story/46855/Hm would you like every channel and every hour be dedicated to national news? I like them to report on it in the same manner in which they most certainly would if were white people who were deliberately targeting black people and killing them. Which would mean all the news channels would be dedicated to reporting this around the hour.ever been to LA or any other california trash city? yeah, its full of black vs mexican gang bs This is more the gang related. Innocent black people are being targeted for racial reasons and the media makes no issue of it.Jigi: What you're saying is true but I'm sure you're smart enough to know what's going on here in why the media only wants to focus on white people who commit hate crimes in America while they ignore nonwhite hate crimes that are either committed against white people or other nonwhites. The term 'hate crime' is a bit redundant. All violent crimes are hate crimes. Yeah, but not all violent crime involves targeting people for racial reasons. While what is described in the story is abhorrent, would you feel better about it if it was because of an argument over a fender bender? I would feel better about it smart ass if the media would start reporting "all racial hate crimes" in America instead of being selective about it and making it seem as if only would racial or ethnic group is responsible for it all.January 2007 news? So what. Do you think it doesn't apply to today. 2007 is just when some were taking notice of what's going on and reported on it. more

Voting Question: Isn't the power of current Mexican cartels analogous to Capone's criminal enterprise during alcohol prohibitio?

It would seem Mexican cartels (referred to as DTOs in FBI report) are capitalizing on the fact that a soft drug (marijuana, no more harmful than cigarettes or alcohol) which has a huge demand is currently illegal. Similar to how Capone capitalized on a the fact a soft drug (alcohol) was in huge demand yet also illegal during alcohol prohibition. Didn't Capone basically run Chicago during alcohol prohibition (mainly because he had LOTS of extra revenue from alcohol sales to bribe officials) in the same way Mexican cartels have bribed half of the Mexican government (marijuana accounts for 60% of their total annual revenue)? What do you think? http://www.fbi.gov/congress/congress10/perkins050510.htm Marijuana: Mexico is the number one foreign supplier of marijuana abused in the United States. In fact, according to a 2008 inter-agency report, marijuana is the top revenue generator for Mexican DTOs—a cash crop that finances corruption and the carnage of violence year after year. The profits derived from marijuana trafficking—an industry with minimal overhead costs, controlled entirely by the traffickers—are used not only to finance other drug enterprises by Mexico’s poly-drug cartels, but also to pay recurring “business” expenses, purchase weapons, and bribe corrupt officials. Though the GOM has a robust eradication program, many of the military personnel traditionally assigned to eradicate marijuana and opium poppy have recently been diverted to the offensive against the cartels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Capone Severely injured in a 1925 assassination attempt by the North Side Gang, the shaken Torrio turned over his business to Capone and returned to Italy. Capone was notorious during the Prohibition Era for his control of large portions of the Chicago underworld, which provided the Outfit with an estimated US $100 million per year[15] in revenue. This wealth was generated through all manner of illegal enterprises, such as gambling and prostitution,[6] ******* although the largest moneymaker was the sale of liquor*******.............................The violence that led to Capone's unprecedented level of criminal success drew the ire of Capone's rivals, and spurred their retaliation, particularly by bitter rivals, North Side gangsters Hymie Weiss and Bugs Moran. More than once, Capone's car was riddled with bullets.Bob H........."No, Capone only lasted a few years. " That's mainly because prohibition only lasted a few years. Unlike the current War on Drugs which has lasted 4 decades and counting.Racheal............"No we should not legalize drugs" I"m not saying we should "legalize drugs". I'm saying what if we ended the prohibition of marijuana in the United States. Marijuana could be classified as a soft drug just like alcohol and cigarettes. This is not the same as hard drugs: heroin, cocaine, crack, meth etc.cleetus........"You are severely underestimating the cartels. " No. It's OBVIOUS they're winning. And the reason they're winning is because they are just as well funded as the govt. is. (meaning they can afford military style equipment). The reason they are this well funded, in large part, is due to the fact that marijuana is illegal in the United States (their biggest consumer).alexandria........."Americans self indulgent appetite for drugs is the problem." So if their appetite for drugs is the problem (meaning they will buy it regardless), why not let this commerce take place legally and in a safer more regulated environment that doesn't further enrich cartels in the process?? more

Resolved Question: Do most Theists use Cognitive dissonance to justify their belief in God?

Cognitive dissonance is an uncomfortable feeling caused by holding contradictory ideas simultaneously. The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people have a motivational drive to reduce dissonance. They do this by changing their attitudes, beliefs, and actions. Immediately i think of Christians that say they don't believe in evolution despite the evidence. Who wants to beleive or accept they have been lied to their whole lives and that everything they know wasn't true? The same goes for people in cult like groups such as AA or gangs. Which is why the more brainwashed a person is the harder it is for them to get out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance more

Resolved Question: Who says there's no evidence illegals commit more crime?

What's all this I keep hearing from the left about "no evidence illegals commit more crime"? Are they just quoting the New York Times? The Times has asserted that illegals do not commit more crime, but if you investigate their sources, these people admit that their data are severely flawed due to failure to categorize the true immigration status of criminals. In fact, the Public Policy Institute of California expressly states, "This lack of data restricts the questions we will be able to answer. In particular, we cannot focus on the undocumented population explicitly." In other words, their assertion is based on flawed data. Fortunately, there are a great many other sources and they're easy to find. Oddly, the Times seems to have neglected to consider any of these when making their extremely biased pronouncement. Imagine that, the New York Times cherry-picking data sources. Here are five to start with. What do you think? http://www.usillegalaliens.com/impacts_of_illegal_immigration_crime_summary.html http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/kouri/060622 http://dallasfedbackup.org/research/papers/2003/wp0303.pdf http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=235885&src=3 http://www.jwpcivitasinstitute.org/media/publication-archive/perspective/illegal-immigration-drugs-gangs-and-crimeReally, Jeffrey? Resolved Question: Did you know about Susurluk Scandal which Brought down Turkish Nationalists Goverment "Forever"?

The Susurluk scandal refers to the events surrounding the peak of the Turkey–Kurdistan Workers' Party conflict, in the mid-1990s. It is considered a scandal because it indicated a relationship between the GOVERNMENT, the ARMED FORCES, and ORGANIZED DEEP-STATE CRIME GANGS. The relationship came into existence after the National Security Council (MGK), the country's highest body, posited the need for the marshaling of the nation's resources to combat the separatist, militant Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). The scandal surfaced with a car crash on 3 November 1996, near Susurluk, in the province of Balıkesir. The victims included the deputy chief of the Istanbul police, a parliament deputy who led a powerful Kurdish clan, and the leader of the Grey Wolves (who was a contract killer on Interpol's red list). The state had been engaged in an escalating low intensity conflict with the PKK since 1984. The conflict reached an apex when the PKK planned to proclaim their independence by 1994. Towards the end of 1992, a furious debate in the NSC about how to proceed was taking place. Doves such as president Turgut Özal and general Eşref Bitlis favored a non-military solution. However, both of these people died in 1993. The same year, the NSC prescribed a co-ordinated Black Operations campaign using special forces. The Turkish branch of Operation Gladio, the "Counter-Guerrilla", contributed much of these special forces. Deputy prime minister Tansu Çiller tasked the police force, then under the leadership of Mehmet Ağar, with crippling the PKK and assassinating its leader, Abdullah Öcalan. The police unit responsible for this job was the Special Operations Department (Turkish: Özel Harekat Dairesi, ÖHD). Contract killer Abdullah Çatlı also took part. This caused consternation in the National Intelligence Organization (Turkish: Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı, MİT), which had formerly counted on Çatlı to undertake reprisals against the militant Armenian organization, ASALA. Especially concerned was Mehmet Eymür of the MİT's Operations/Counter-Terrorism Department, who had irreconcilable differences with Ağar.The scandal has hence been pithily described as "the battle of the two Mehmets". Resolved Question: Birdshot or Buckshot for Urban Home Defense?

I have a 20 gauge shotgun. 12 gauge doesn't work too well when you are five foot four, 118 pounds. At least it doesn't work for me. Anyway, I live in a lousy neighborhood in Los Angeles called Echo Park. To give you some idea how lousy it is, the worse gang in America is generally accepted to be MS-13, also known as Mara Salvatrucha Trece. They were born here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mara_Salvatrucha Anyway, I keep a shotgun loaded with birdshot. I would rather not kill an intruder if I can help it. In this neighborhood, if you shoot an intruder, and you KILL him, you better hope he is not a gang member. If he is, his gang will wait until you are no longer vigilant and then kill you when you don't expect it. What is the normal reaction when a peson is shot out of the lethal range of birdshot? Do they just shrug it off, and keep on coming? Or is it so painful it takes all the fire and vinegar out of them, and the fight is over? Would you be better off shooting the person in the legs, or would you need to shoot them in the face and shoulders? Again, I would hate to have to move because a stray pellet pentrated some guy's brain. Apparently, the gang around here doesn't hold it against you if you WOUND a member who breaks into your house. They feel he had it coming. In fact, there is an ex gang member around here called "Hoppy," (sick humor, he can barely walk) who is no longer in the gang, because he broke into a person's house and got shot several times and pretty much lost his health and ability to move fast. There was no retaliation against the homeowner. But, if you kill a gang member, they feel honor bound to kill you back. So should I use birdshot (what size?) normal 20 gauge #3 buck, or buy that special 00 buck for 20 gauge shotguns? Would you aim for the legs or the chest? You know my orientation. I teach Elementary School. The only place you can be what I am openly, and teach elementary school is two cities: Los Angeles or San Francisco.Corey Wikipedia disagrees. They say it was started in Pico Union Los Angeles to counter Mexican street gangs.EddyGordo19 Being true to who and what I am is more important. more

Resolved Question: Will these sources on illegals' crime rates suffice?

The NYTimes has asserted that illegals do not commit more crime, but if you investigate their sources, these people admit that their data are severely flawed due to failure to categorize the true immigration status of criminals. In fact, the Public Policy Institute of California expressly states, "This lack of data restricts the questions we will be able to answer. In particular, we cannot focus on the undocumented population explicitly." In other words, their assertion is based on flawed data. Fortunately, there are other sources: I've only provided five. Resolved Question: What do you think Hizbullah on US-Mexico border special team to further investigate the potential problem?

US Republican rep: terror org may be working with drug cartels. A Hizbullah terror cell may be operating among drugs cartels around the US-Mexican border, announced US Republican National Committee Representative Sue Myrick, according to a Fox News report. Myrick requested US Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano create a special team to further investigate the potential problem and threat. The Republican representative referenced several incidents that show evidence of Hizbullah's efforts to infiltrate the US region with the aid of Mexican drug cartel gangs. "It is vital we know what is happening on our border, especially as crime and violence continue to rise there and as terrorist plots and threats are increasing inside the US," quoted the Fox News report. Myrick cited the warming relationship between Iran and Venzuela as proof that Hizbullah members may be collaborating with Latin American drug cartels, who may be utilizing Hizbullah's ability to dig underground tunnels for drug smuggling and in turn, providing funding, document forging and false identities. The Fox News report referenced Anthony Placido, assistant administrator for intelligence at the Drug Enforcement Administration, testifying at a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee in March this year, that some drug smugglers in the US-Mexico region have had relationships with Hizbullah between the 1980s and 1990s. "There are numerous reports of cocaine proceeds entering the coffers of Islamic Radical Groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas," Fox News quoted Placido when he testified to the subcommittee. Placido labeled the proceeds as "easy revenue" that could potentially be used to fund terrorism. Fox News also cited a 2006 House Homeland Security Committee report which details incidents of Hizbullah operatives who were apprehended when trying to access the US through Mexico. The report mentions Mahmoud Youssef Kourani, a Hizbullah member who pleaded guilty in 2005 for supplying information to the terror organization after he was smuggled in the US through Mexico, and lived in Dearborne, Michigan.http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=180600 more

Resolved Question: Could anyone correct the second part of my essay? The essay is in English, but I am Italian?

The nineteenth-century American woman was still considerated the half of a man, she was a property to be passed from a father to a husband, she did not have the right of a proper education and to manage her properties, even her wages, in church she had (and still has) a subordinate position, but above all she had not the right to vote. Men considerate women like children, that is they were not assumed to have their own opinions and to be able to take their own decisions, for this reason religion was “exactly what a woman needed, for it gives her that dignity that best suits her dependence” (Welter 153). Slaves and Women linked their arms in solidarity, and women fought a double battle, one for the slaves and another for themselves against dependence, submission, tyranny, violence, degradation, believes such as their natural inferiority, they all wanted to obtain equality, independence, a proper education, wages and in general the inaliable rights of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” that the Declaration of Independence assured to the American citizens. Indeed in both the Declaration of Sentiments by the American anti-slavery Convention and in the Declaration of Sentiments by Women’s Rights they quoted the initial statement of the Declaration of Independence as the starting point of their demand of equality and of rights. In December 1833 the American Anti-slavery Convention assembled in Philadelphia to organize a National Anti-Slavery Society and promulgated the Declaration of Sentiments. While Women wrote and signed their Declaration of Sentiments in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. An important common feature is the constant reference to God and religion. At first accepting Christianity became part of accepting America as home, but over time, large numbers of slaves found the biblical message of spiritual equality before God appealing and found comfort in the biblical theme of deliverance. Indeed in their Declaration of Sentiments they wrote “That every American citizen, who detains a human being in involuntary bondage as his property, is, according to Scripture, (Ex, xxi. 16) a man-stealer: that the slaves ought instantly to be set free, and brought under the protection of law” (Garrison 69). Garrison stated that slavery was a “presumptuous transgression of all the holy commandments” (ibidem). Abolitionists steadily believed that God made all men equals and whites had to respect His law. Even David Walker in his Appeal believed in the Gospel and in the Justice of God beyond this World. So when he criticized the former president of the United States Jefferson for his Notes on Virginia, he wrote “he is gone to answer at the bar of God” (Walker http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4h2931t.html). Besides Walker believed that God made all men equal and afterwards in his rhetoric question to the readers he asked: Did our Creator make us to be slaves to dust and ashes like ourselves? Are they not dying worms as well as we? Have they not to make their appearance before the tribunal of Heaven, to answer for the deeds done in the body, as well as we? Have we any other Master but Jesus Christ alone? Is he not their Master as well as ours? -- What right then, have we to obey and call any other Master, but Himself? How we could be so submissive to a gang of men, whom we cannot tell whether they are as good as ourselves or not, I never could conceive. However, this is shut up with the Lord, and we cannot precisely tell -- but I declare, we judge men by their works. more

Resolved Question: UAE: Court Sentences Teenage Gang Rape Victim to 1 Year in Prison. Why is it always the Muslim countries?

A court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has convicted an 18 year old girl (”LH”) to one year in prison for “consensual sex.” The UAE court convicted her because she agreed to be alone in the car with a man “YM.” As previously reported, the teenage girl had previously alleged that she was gang raped by six men. the UAE “The Nation” newspaper reported that LH had “12 bruises ranging from 1cm to 7 cm long on her upper lip, hands, thighs, knee, and behind her left ear.” LH indicated that her brother had beaten her, although the beatings happened at different times. However, after the teenage girl “LH” filed charges of rape, according to the “The Nation” on May 25, “LH” was then charged with the crime of “extramarital sex,” which could have led to a penalty of “lashes and a maximum sentence of life in prison,” with a minimum of three years in prison. LH then pleaded with the court to allow her to withdraw the rape charges, while one of the accused rapists laughed at her in court. According to the LA Times, LH appeared before the court “shackled and clothed in an inmate’s uniform of hunter green and a black headscarf” and “she rescinded the allegations ‘to get out of’ jail, Bloomberg Businessweek reported.” The UAE court had reportedly considered the lesser criminal charge of “deception” against “LH,” but chose to convict of “consensual sex,” with a sentence of 1 year in prison. One of the alleged rapists was also convicted of “consensual sex” with a sentence of 1 year in prison. Two of the men were given sentences of three months in prison “for being alone in the company of a woman.” The other men were only given fines. According to “The Nation” that fines represented an application of Sharia law only, whereas the other convictions were a combination of UAE law and Sharia law together. more: http://www.realcourage.org/2010/06/uae-girl-prison-for-rape-victim/ Why is it that this type of story always seem to happen in Muslim countries? more

Resolved Question: is there any archeological evidence for the Thuggees killing 2 million people?

Surely, if they killed 2 million people, the bodies must be buried somewhere?? "Estimates of the total number of victims vary widely, depending on the author's idea of the length of existence of the Thugs (for which there are no reliable sources). According to the Guinness Book of Records the Thuggee cult was responsible for approximately 2,000,000 deaths, while British historian Dr. Mike Dash estimates that they killed 50,000 persons in total, based on his assumption that they only started to exist 150 years before their eradication in the 1830s. Yearly figures for the early 19th century are better documented, but even they are inaccurate estimates. For example, gang leader Behram has often been considered the world's most prolific serial killer, blamed for 931 killings between 1790 and 1830. Reference to contemporary manuscript sources, however, shows that Behram actually gave inconsistent statements regarding the number of murders he had committed. While he did state that he had "been present at" 931 killings committed by his gang of 25 to 50 men, elsewhere he admitted that he had personally strangled "only" around 125 people. Having turned King's Evidence and agreed to inform on his former companions, furthermore, Behram never stood trial for any of the killings attributed to him, the total of which must thus remain a matter of dispute.[7]" In her book The Strangled Traveler: Colonial Imaginings and the Thugs of India (2002), Martine van Woerkens suggests that evidence for the existence of a Thuggee cult in the 19th century was in part the product of "colonial imaginings" — British fear of the little-known interior of India and limited understanding of the religious and social practices of its inhabitants. For a comparison, see Juggernaut and the Black Hole of Calcutta. Krishna Dutta, while reviewing the book Thug: the true story of India's murderous cult by the British historian Dr. Mike Dash in The Independent, argues:[10] "In recent years, the revisionist view that thuggee was a British invention, a means to tighten their hold in the country, has been given credence in India, France and the US, but this well-researched book objectively questions that assertion." "In his book, Dash rejects scepticism about the existence of a secret network of groups with a modus operandi that was different from highwaymen, such as dacoits. To prove his point Dash refers to the excavated corpses in graves, of which the hidden locations were revealed to Sleeman's team by thug informants. In addition, Dash treats the extensive and thorough documentation that Sleeman made. Dash rejects the colonial emphasis on the religious motivation for robbing, but instead asserts that monetary gain was the main motivation for Thuggee and that men sometimes became Thugs due to extreme poverty. He further asserts that the Thugs were highly superstitious and that they worshipped the Hindu goddess Kali, but that their faith was not very different from their contemporary non-thugs. He admits, though, that the thugs had certain group-specific superstitions and rituals." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thuggee#The_magnitude_of_the_problem more

Resolved Question: Atheists: How do you explain this?

The following is an exerpt from "The Cross and the Swithblade" by David Wilkerson, a TRUE STORY about a pastor who went to New York to help teenage gang members. This part of the book happened when Rev. Wilkerson was trying to decide whether to stay in Pennsylvania or move to New York full-time. From "The Cross and the Switchblade" "It was a hot August night, a year and a half after my first timorous trip to New York. I was standing in the pulpit at the Wednesday evening prayer service...Before I knew it the congregation was filing out to go home. At ten thirty I closed up the church and left by the rear door. What happened next was quite simple, yet it was one of those moments of truth I shall never forget as long as I live. I went out into the backyard of the church. The moon was shining with an unusual brilliance...I turned and looked at the church and the parsonage where Gwen and the three children were safe, happy and secure in their life in a country parish. But as I stood and looked at them, I quiet inner voice spoke to me as clearly as if a friend had been standing nearby. "The church is no longer yours," I was told, "you are to leave." I looked at the parsonage and the sam einner voice said "This home is no longer yours. You are to leave." And, in the same still, slow inner voice I answered "Yes Lord, I shall go." I walked over to the parsonage after that, and there was Gwen, waiting up. She was dressed for bed, but I could tell something had been happening to her, too. "What is it Gwen?" "How do you mean?" "There's something different about you." "David," Gwen said, "you don''t have to tell me.I know already. You're going to leave the church, aren't you. You've got to leave." I looked at Gwen a long time before I answered her. In the moonlight that glowed into the parsonage bedroom, I could see a tear in her eye. "I heard it too, David," said Gwen. "We're going aren't we?" In the darkness I put my arms around her. "Yes, my dear. We're going." So how do you explain that? How could he and his wife have had such an amazing parallel experience? She heard the same thing as he did. If you want proof that this story is all true, here's the Wikipedia article for the the book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cross_and_the_Switchblade So what do you think? How do you explain that? more

Resolved Question: How many people here think "Obama has done nothing wrong"?

Now I am an atheist, and probably a liberal by American standards (I'm not actually an American), but you might be surprised to learn some of the things Obama has done. For example, he has continued many of the Bush-era's policies and even taken some of them to the next level. He has gotten away with things nobody would have stood for from Bush, including, but not limited to: - Seeking to reduce Miranda-rights of people they take in custody (http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/05/holder_obama_admin_seeks_changes_to_miranda_rule.php) - Assassinating American citizens far away from any battlefield because he supposedly has evidence that they are terrorists (to which nobody is granted access so we don't even know if he actually has any), and even if he had he definitely wouldn't have to right to bypass due legal process (I am not making this up: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/07/world/middleeast/07yemen.html?hp) - Continuing the Bush-era policy of "indefinite detention" where you lock people up for years while not charging them with anything (http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/22/detention/index.html) - Continuing the Bush era trick of the "Gang of eight" (by which you avoid oversight from Congress: http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/03/16/obama), all the while claiming his administration is the most open and transparent ever. A demonstrable lie if there ever was one - Also, check out Obama's involvement in warrantless wiretaps: http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/04/01/nsa http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2009/04/obama-doj-worse-than-bush http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2009/04/shut-up-its-still-a-secret/7304/ Clearly he wants to do similar warrantless and illegal wiretaps as Bush did, and we don't really know if he has. Bush wiretapped American citizens without due process, and there was a huge outcry over it. Obama has killed an American citizen without due process and plans to do so again in the future, yet where's the outrage? Or is it okay just as long as the American citizens killed look like arabs? However, the Republicans aren't going to be any better either. If anything, they are even more extreme. Here's a legislation McCain is currently proposing, and it provides excellent insight into what would have happened if he had won the presidency: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-s3081/show http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2010/03/enemy-belligerent-interrogation-detention-and-prosecution-act-2010 (Hint: it involves barring all terrorism suspects, including Americans arrested on U.S. soil, from being tried in civilian courts. Instead, they would be tried in military tribunals where they wouldn't be able to call witnesses, dispute the statements of the prosecution, nor would there be a jury. Now that makes absolutely no sense to anyone who doesn't think "accused of Terrorism" = "guilty of Terrorism". It's incredible they can even propose this with a straight face) Here's some more similar Republican insanity: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0510/36741.html Republicans and Democracts are both acting crazy. Somehow with the advent of Bush-era unlimited executive power, crazy has become the new norm. But what bothers me more than the insanity of the politicians involved in this is the overwhelming amount of public apathy and the number of people who think "Obama has done nothing wrong". Are you one of them?Inspired by this question on R&S a couple of hours ago in which someone said "Obama's done nothing wrong" and got 9 thumbs-up. Well that just ain't true.Native Spirit - I'll re-ask it there. But like I said, there seemed to be a lot of people on R&S who think Obama has done nothing wrong, which just ain't so.The guy - "Obama can't say "don't do that, I don't like it, it's wrong". That would mean we live in a dictatorship. " Ehheh heh heh heh. You are hilarious, I'll give you that. Sure, Obama couldn't possibly demand his staff not to break any laws because that would mean we lived in a dictatorship. Geez, some people... more

Resolved Question: Why is it that Obama will pay for Military equipment and training for Mexico, but not for our border states?

Obama sent free money to Mexico for: Non-intrusive inspection equipment such as ion scanners, gamma ray scanners, X-ray vans and canine units for Mexico and Central America. Technologies to improve and secure telecommunications systems that collect criminal information in Mexico. Technical advice and training to strengthen the institutions of justice, case management software to track investigations through the system, new offices of citizen complaints and professional responsibility, and witness protection programs to Mexico. Thirteen Bell 412 EP helicopters (5 with INCLE funds for the Federal Police and 8 with FMF funds for the military). Eight UH-60 Black Hawk transport helicopters (three with INCLE funds for the Federal Police and 5 with FMF funds for the Mexican Air Force). Up to four CASA CN-235 transport aircraft. Equipment, training and community action programs in Central American countries to implement anti-gang measures and expand the reach of these measures. Yet he refuses to send the guard or extra equipment to our border states. Why? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A9rida_Initiative more

Resolved Question: Why haven't you stopped using recreational drugs?

They contribute to everything wrong in American society: Terrorism crime illegal aliens violence gang activity murders poverty prostitution brain and over all health damage etc. If you use recreational drugs...why? http://www.drugfree.org/portal/drugissue/methresources/faces/index.htmlSome good points, but you mean to tell me that if drugs were completely legal everything in the US would be better? That drugs use contribitue nothing to the downward spirial of a society? Guess you've never been to Amsterdam. You should make it a field trip for your study. Resolved Question: Can you believe it is today's USA and not of a century ago?

Just read the following news: Modern Day Slavery in America -- Over 300,000 U.S. Children Fall Prey to Sex Trafficking http://www.alternet.org/story/146932/modern_day_slavery_in_america_--_over_300,000_u.s._children_fall_prey_to_sex_trafficking People may have trouble believing that child prostitution has become a national problem -- but it's on the verge of becoming out of control. May 19, 2010 | Child prostitution has become a national problem in this country. Yes, I know that you have trouble believing that. You don't want to believe it, so you tend not to. "Widespread sex trafficking in children?" you may be saying to yourself. "Sure, it happens overseas in places like Thailand and Moldova, and while there may be some of it here there's not that much of it in our country." Based on a months-long investigation and some reportorial digging, I'm here to tell you that you are wrong. We all are. We're in denial. In covering news for more than 60 years, I'd like to think that few stories shock me anymore. But this is one of them. We ran across it late last year and the more we dug, the more disturbing it became. Eighty-year-old men paying a premium to violate teenage girls, sometimes supplied by former drug gangs now into child sex trafficking big time? You've got to be kidding. Nope. That's happening and a lot more along the same lines. The business is booming. One of the worst areas for it runs along lines running roughly from Seattle to Portland, to San Francisco and Los Angeles, to Las Vegas. But no place in the country is immune. To pick just one example among many, Portland, Oregon is without doubt one of the nation's treasures. It has been voted one of the best places to live and work. But according to police, the city and its outlying communities has become a hub for the sexual exploitation of children. In a recent nationwide sting by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, Portland ranked second in the country for the number of rescued child prostitutes. And according to Doug Justus, the workhorse sergeant in charge of Portland's tiny vice detail, many of the children caught up in this are middle class kids from the area. The girls, sometimes as young as 12, often 13-16, are lured by a "front man" in his mid-to-late teens. He becomes her "boyfriend," taking her to dinner, buying her nice things, sometimes meeting her parents. The girl eventually moves in with him. Then he says they need money to continue being together. First, she's enticed to sleep with his friends to pay the rent. Soon she's turning tricks for what police say is an endless supply of older men willing to pay top money for sex with very young girls. Other times convincing the young adolescent girls to sell themselves happens very quickly. "It is an out-of-control problem. It's unbelievable," say Justus. "I've only done this vice-squad job for three years. I've been a cop for 29. If you had told me three years ago that a 14-year-old girl would go to a food court, meet a guy, and three hours later be selling herself, I'd 'a said, no frigging way. It happens every single day, every day." It is a very lucrative business, according to Justus. "An average pimp with one kid will make between $800 and $l,000 a day. That's seven days a week, 30 days a month," he said. And the pimps usually have a stable of young girls. No wonder so many criminals in the drug trade have turned to it which they have in droves. There's less chance of being caught, less chance of being prosecuted if caught, lighter sentences -- if any. more

Resolved Question: Amnesty International recently issued a report Mexico a human rights crisis 10,000 kidnapped six out of 10?

Amnesty International recently issued a report Mexico a human rights crisis 10,000 kidnapped six out of 10 women and girls experience sexual violence so is the Mexico telling America what we must do but not what Mexico must do ? women and girls experience sexual violence — many not just at the hands of criminal gangs, but also the Federal Police. Amnesty International recommends further reforms, including legislative reforms to ensure access to justice, the establishment of a federal task force to coordinate and implement measures, and the compilation and publication of data on abuses against migrants and the steps taken to bring those responsible to account –including public officials. However, one of the central issues, according to Amnesty, is that migrants still fear they will be deported if they complain to Mexican authorities about abuses. Article 67 of Mexico’s immigration law still requires law enforcement to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country. The Interior Department is reportedly working to repeal Article 67 “so that no one can deny or restrict foreigners’ access to justice and human rights, whatever their migratory status.” In the mean time, the U.S. would be wise to look at Mexico’s immigration problems not necessarily as a source of hypocrisy, but rather, an extreme, but poignant case study of the deputization of immigration law and what can happen when it turns immigrants into criminals. http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2010/05/20/mexico-immigration-laws/ more

Resolved Question: Why aren't African Americans more aware of the threat abortion poses to their culture?

Everyone seems more concentrated on gang violence, drugs/prison, racism, and relatively isolated acts of police brutality but the sad fact is more than half all black people that would be born are aborted...why isn't this issue dealt with or even recognized? http://www.blackgenocide.org/"C2" yeah the statistic I had found said 52% but since it's more or less confidential it could be anything, but im glad to see that billboard in Atlanta. more

Resolved Question: Why do many feminist falsely say testosterone causes violence even tho women are becoming more violent?

If testosterone causes it: 1. Why is violence by women rising? 2. Why do women outnumber men in cases of physical abuse of children? http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/cb/pubs/cm08/chapter5.htm#age 3. Why is there no evidence or scientific research suiggesting it does? From Wiki: Testosterone effects on the male Brain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testosterone "Contrary to what has been postulated in outdated studies and by certain sections of the media, aggressive behaviour is not typically seen in hypogonadal men who have their testosterone replaced adequately to the eugonadal/normal range. In fact, aggressive behaviour has been associated with hypogonadism and low testosterone levels and it would seem as though supraphysiological and low levels of testosterone and hypogonadism cause mood disorders and aggressive behaviour, with eugondal/normal testosterone levels being important for mental well-being" Basically they're saying men with low testosterone levels are aggressive and moody. My opinion is that violence is learned. Period. Our society today cheers on violence in males and celebrates it as "masculinity". Also "gang culture" is marketed to boys not girls and violent role models are disproportionately male so chanced of boys being role modelled are much higher than girls. In time women commit equal numbers, if women can be as violent as men to children they can be as violent to anyone. more

Resolved Question: Do you agree with activists/illegals protesting over the following list of AZ problems they say are harmless?

Consider the Facts •In 2008, The U.S. Justice Department said recently that Mexican gangs are the "biggest organized crime threat to the United States." •Until January of 2009, any smugglers carrying under the threshold of 500 pounds were often not prosecuted. Smugglers began purposely carrying smaller loads or coming in just below 500 pounds to try to escape prosecution. •In 2009, Phoenix had more than 370 kidnapping cases last year, turning it into the kidnapping capital of the U.S. Most of the victims were illegal aliens or linked to the drugs trade. •Narcotics prosecutions in Arizona have risen 202% in 16 months and that is still not handling all of the arrests that are made according to Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. •1,080 prosecutions will be refused this year in Tucson sector alone. This represents over one third of all unprosecuted cases in the Southwest. •According to Phoenix Police Department, there has already been 95 home invasion robberies in 2010, following 398 in 2009 and 376 in 2008. •An estimated 5 to 10 % of all marijuana produced in Mexico is transported by highly organized and compartmentalized Mexican Drug Trafficking Organizations each year through the Tohono O’odham Reservation, which accounts for less than 4% percent of the U.S.-Mexico Border. Voting Question: can someone help me with a counter for legalizing marijuana?

i have a persuasive essay due and im for my arguement i put: Topic Sentence/Argument: Legalizing marijuana would be very beneficial to the earth’s economy Opinion: Since it is illegal, it seems more valuable to gangs or marijuana users. Fact: The fact that it is illegal makes marijuana more valuable and harder to get. This makes it more expensive because how hard it is to acquire marijuana. (alternet.org) About an ounce of marijuana is worth $344. (drugscience.org) Opinion: This proves that legalizing marijuana would be better for the world rather than illegalizing. wht would be a good counter to that and it has to be a fact and please provide a site more

Resolved Question: Why is homosexuality so abhorrent if Jesus never felt the need to mention it?

Frankly, I fail to grok how faithful, committed and monogamous love is so awful in the first place. Being gay isn't a lifestyle choice. If you believe it is ... try turning gay. Doesn't work. Gay people 'choose' to be gay about as much as you 'choose' to be straight: not at all. And before you whip out one of the *seven* lonesome verses that talks anything about homosexuality, perhaps you might like to first research their context. Not one Biblical verse concerning homosexuality talks about homosexuality as we know it today: consented; committed; a relationship. It talks of acts of rape (gang-rape or child-molestation, even the raping of angels in Jude 7;) it talks of acts of ritual: worship towards gods of sex; idolatry if you want one word for it. Most people simply dislike it because they're uncomfortable with it, which is understandable in theory, but a naive reason to spread hatred about homosexuals. People often say "gay sex" is unnatural. So, why is it so objectionable for a man to have anal sex with a man, but it's fine when it's with a woman? Here's an interesting read, written by a gay Christian (shock horror, I know,) that looks more deeply into why the Bible does not condemn homosexuality: http://www.soulforce.org/pdf/whatthebiblesays.pdf But I digress, and return to the original question. All of the above in consideration, what is so objectionable about homosexuality, when Jesus himself never ever mentioned it? Surely, if it was worth telling people not to be irrevocably in love with someone who happened to be the same gender, Jesus would have preached it?@Debby - Grok = understand empathetically. @Matthew - "Marriage is between a man and a woman" As defined by who? The Bible? Last time I checked, we all had the right to our own religion. Marriage doesn't belong to you, by the way. And, all that works for you; ain't for me.@Cody - I'm fourteen. I have a wide vocabulary because A) I'm sad like that, and B) I used to get dictionary.com's word of the day email until they mysteriously stopped being sent. more

Resolved Question: Anyone else remember the Catillac Cats, aka, Cats and Co.? It was a kids' cartoon from the '80s?

I remember the Catillac Cats, and they were part of the old Heathcliff cartoon from the '80s. Riff Raff was a pimp, in a sense. He was a gang leader and had a cute girlfriend, and he and his cat pals lived in a junkyard. The show was on in the '80s and later on tv again in the '90s on cable. Does anyone else know what I am talking about. Resolved Question: Why do Black Groups in America still see America the same way as they did in the 60s?

Black Nationalists groups- black panthers etc.. Acorn org.. obviously think they are oppressed still. This is the year 2010! Yet these groups Black Liberation Theology etc... still act like they are a separate people? I don't get it because were I live and have lived our neighbors are all races and ethnicity and we all get along and they have good jobs or some had good jobs until recently. I just watched a old video of Malcolm talking , and at that time I agreed with him on most his views on how black people were not treated fairly and as equals for sure, but times are not like that now. So why do people in these groups feel they are seen as a American? Why do some not want to be seen as a American? Why do they want to Change America so much, is it a revenge thing? The way I see it is, the people who are born in the poor communities in the cities are stuck in a rut. They don't move, they get welfare and learn to depend on welfare so they are depressed. I think its the liberals fault. Those people fell they don't have a reason to be something else, to make a better life and I think drugs and gangs keeps them down. Malcolm said in that video the people who turned to being a Muslim were the unemployed and the oppressed in search for something. I thought that was a very interesting thing to say.. more

Resolved Question: Can Cocaine be legal in the United States? i have some facts over here, take a look?

The Top Ten Reasons Cocaine Should Be Legal Prohibition hasn't stopped the use and domestic production of cocaine -- it's time everyone faced this. September 1, 2007 | LIKE THIS ARTICLE ? Join our mailing list: Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Drugs headlines via email. Petitions by Change.org|Get Widget|Start a Petition » Editor's note: There are millions of regular sniffers in America and millions more infrequent sniffers. Inhaling cocaine clearly has far fewer dangerous and hazardous effects on society than legal drugs such as alcohol. Here is High Times's top 10 reasons that cocaine should be legal, part of its 420 Campaign legalization strategy. 10. Prohibition has failed to control the use and domestic production of cocaine. The government has tried to use criminal penalties to prevent cocaine use for over 75 years and yet: cocaine is now used by over 25 million people annually, cocaine is currently the largest cash crop in the United States, and cocaine is grown all over the planet. Claims that cocaine prohibition is a successful policy are ludicrous and unsupported by the facts, and the idea that cocaine will soon be eliminated from America and the rest of the world is a ridiculous fantasy. 9. Arrests for cocaine possession disproportionately affect blacks and Hispanics and reinforce the perception that law enforcement is biased and prejudiced against minorities. African-Americans account for approximately 13% of the population of the United States and about 13.5% of annual cocaine users, however, blacks also account for 26% of all cocaine arrests. Recent studies have demonstrated that blacks and Hispanics account for the majority of cocaine possession arrests in New York City, primarily for snuffing cocaine in public view. Law enforcement has failed to demonstrate that cocaine laws can be enforced fairly without regard to race; far too often minorities are arrested for cocaine use while white/non-Hispanic Americans face a much lower risk of arrest. 8. A regulated, legal market in cocaine would reduce cocaine sales and use among teenagers, as well as reduce their exposure to other drugs in the illegal market. The illegality of cocaine makes it more valuable than if it were legal, providing opportunities for teenagers to make easy money selling it to their friends. If the excessive profits for cocaine sales were ended through legalization there would be less incentive for teens to sell it to one another. Teenage use of alcohol and tobacco remain serious public health problems even though those drugs are legal for adults, however, the availability of alcohol and tobacco is not made even more widespread by providing kids with economic incentives to sell either one to their friends and peers. 7. Legalized cocaine would reduce the flow of money from the American economy to international criminal gangs. Cocaine illegality makes foreign cultivation and smuggling to the United States extremely profitable, sending billions of dollars overseas in an underground economy while diverting funds from productive economic development. 6. Cocaine legalization would simplify the development of hemp as a valuable and diverse agricultural crop in the United States, including its development as a new bio-fuel to reduce carbon emissions. Canada and European countries have managed to support legal coca cultivation without legalizing cocaine, but in the United States opposition to legal cocaine remains the biggest obstacle to development of industrial coca as a valuable agricultural commodity. As US energy policy continues to embrace and promote the development of bio-fuels as an alternative to oil dependency and a way to reduce carbon emissions, it is all the more important to develop industrial coca as a bio-fuel source - especially since use of coca stalks as a fuel source will not increase demand and prices for food, such as corn. Legalization of cocaine will greatly simplify the regulatory burden on prospective coca cultivation in the United States. 5. Prohibition is based on lies and disinformation. Justification of cocaine illegality increasingly requires distortions and selective uses of the scientific record, causing harm to the credibility of teachers, law enforcement officials, and scientists throughout the country. The dangers of cocaine use have been exaggerated for almost a century and the modern scientific record does not support the reefer madness predictions of the past and present. Many claims of cocaine danger are based on old 20th century prejudices that originated in a time when science was uncertain how cocaine produced its characteristic effects. Since the coca receptor system was discovered in the late 1980s these hysterical concerns about cocaine dangerousness have not been confirmed with modern research. Everyone agrees that cocaine, or any other drug use such as alcohol or tobacco use, is not for children. Nonetheless, adu more
