Open Question: Oregon Equine Law regarding property damage?

A friend of my mine owns a small farm with a few horses. There is a popular trail about a mile from where she lives and it is common for horses to be found riding on the road to and from this trail head. She has been riding her entire life, and for the last year with a friend who has never purchased her own horse but always borrows one at the time. The last time they went out they encountered a driver who instead of slowly passing them pulled along side them and stopped and claims she did this not to scare the horses. Unfortunately, the friends horse (borrowed), was spooked by this and ended up damaging the car. I am curious if anyone knows or can find anything pertaining to who's responsibility this falls to (rider or horse owner). Ive done a little searching around but cant seem to find any solid information. And as said in the title this happened in the state of Oregon. more

Open Question: Something killed my bunny!?

I just bought a white lion head doe bunny. She was only about 9 weeks old when I got her, and we kept her at our farm house. We live right across the street from a large suburb so we aren't completely secluded but we were still worried about her safety. We bought a large hutch from a garage sale. It was about 2-3 feet off the ground, and seemed to be made out of plywood with a mesh cage planted firmly inside of it. There was a plank on the top of the hutch nailed in to hold the cage in. We only had the bunny for a couple days before we started seeing two dogs roaming around the farmland/property so we always kept her in the cage when the came running around. Naturally, they chased the wild rabbits around but never really came close to our yard. At night we were always afraid for the rabbits safety so we would store her in our shed. It was a large wooden shed that our cat Sassy often slept in. Two days ago, it was extremely windy outside and our bunny Biscuit, doesn't like the wind so we kept her in the shed all day. We had the door open because we didn't want her to over heat and left it open all day. Everyone left the house at 5:00 and it was still somewhat hot and windy so we kept the door open. When we came back, it was nearly 10:00. We didn't know we would be gone that long, but when we looked in the shed, the wire cage had been pulled out of the hutch, the door was open, the bunny gone and, for some reason feathers all around outside. We found 1 claw mark on the concrete (which is similar to flooring in a garage) in the shed, 1 small feather inside, and what we think is one of our bunnies nails. It looked like a tuft of our rabbits hair but on closer examination we found there was a small claw in the middle of it but no flesh. We also found dog footprints near the shed and dog poop on the lawn 10 ft away. When we looked on the weeds there was more of our bunnies hair caught on them. I know it may look obvious that a dog got her but we just want some other opinions. What we thought may have happened is that some how the cage opened towards the inside of the shed so little biscuit ran under all of the boxes and crates. The attacker tried to "grab" her and caused the claw marks but failed. When they left, they left a present on our lawn. Biscuit got out of the shed and ran away leaving the fur on the bushes. There was no blood that we could see anywhere, but we still haven't found Biscuit. Do you think she could still be alive? Another thing to know is that I live in a small town in Colorado. If you read the whole thing thanks, I tried to be as thorough as possible, that's why its so longI do not think we are going to get another rabbit soon for fear of this happening again. more

Open Question: My paranoia is affecting me greatly?

I'm 19, a girl, and for years I've been afraid of adults, children, elderly, people of all sorts! I'm especially afraid of people larger than me (obese or just plain TALL), since they make me feel so small, weak and intimidated. Children tend to be loud, brave, judgmental, and that intimidates me as well. Adults seem even worse. I am afraid to go out in public. Not even to the grocery store. I can barely even call the pizza man over the phone. If I do go out in public with parents, i'd just bolt outside on a bench and wait for my parents to finish shopping and leave for home. I'm usually the first one in the door. I just run to my room, and slam it shut, and try to catch my breath, not even helping with the groceries. Then I just flop on my bed, cover my head, and sleep in to 6pm (in time for dinner) the next day. I barely eat, as well. I dont even enjoy going out into the kitchen, since its next to the living room, which is a big space lots of people are invited into. Even when there's no one there, I hate going in. I feel people are staring into me and can see me, my thoughts, etc. I prefer animals to people, and I have 4 pets so far. I fear that when im out of the house, i'd become an animal hoarder. I can imagine myself with my dream animals on a farm. Buffalo, horses, chickens, a lot of dogs... Im afraid of loud noises, and I have paranoia. Not the normal "after watching a scary slasher movie" kind. This is constant. I'm constantly looking around my shoulder, shivering in fear (I mainly do that in public, which gives off a bad impression), and I feel people are watching. When I think of a song, I dont sing out loud because I think people will hear me, although the house is so empty. I cant even talk to my animals when i'm home alone. I'm afraid of people hearing my voice, as well. So, I am usually very quiet. If a visitor comes to our house, i'm locking my door and in my room the whole time. I do badly with meeting strangers. I hate being hugged or touched by anyone (esp not handshaking), including my parents. If I see a person coming towards me in public, I bolt the other direction. Gosh, i'd even run and yell. If I find the confidence to go into a store (empty ones like petstores or bookstores), and i'm walking into an aisle, If I see a person standing there, I just back away quickly, and move a good distance away. I barely look into a mirror to see how I look. I'm just discusted by my face, skin, hair, and very thin body. I'm 5'8" and 107 pounds. Forgot to add one more thing! If I see large groups of people in public, I feel they're staring and saying something about me. I sometimes think I can hear them, but it's probably in my head, well, I don't actually know, so I just bolt away. I am pretty nocturnal nowadays, awake until 4am due to a gaming addiction (my main source of interaction), then I sleep until 6pm or later. If I miraculously wake up at 3pm, that's considered 'early' for me. I dont have school anymore (THANK GOD). I had online school (because I cant cope with socializing), but my gaming addiction and fear of contacting the teacher to explain my inactivity made her drop me out of the class. I was too afraid to log back in, because I would fear an angry email from her or something. So, I put it off. And now, I have no classes. Now, I feel worse. I have no means of graduating now. Anyway, yes, I have been hospitalized once for being caught looking up methods to... You know. I've learned my lesson, I believe. Oh, and anti-depressants seem to make me either ill or sleepy. Believe me, i've been on a lot of doses (some were high doses) and types. None work significantly (even over the years!). I am now off all of them and am not getting any mental help. I usually stay at home, in my room, and I refuse to go shopping or run errands. Half of my day, im laying in bed, not willing to do anything. I cover my head with a blanket since it feels safer. So, any ideas on whats wrong with me? My parents refuse to think anything's wrong with me, and I think my mom knows, but she thinks that her family is being dishonored by my behavior and no one should have any insanity if they are deeply as religious as she is. I dont even go to her church anymore, since I dont feel comfortable there at all. PS, talking to a friend wont help, because I haven't had one since elementary school. I barely speak to my mom unless I am sick or want something, and almost not at all to my dad! He cant speak to me without yelling.Jon, i'm not a troll. Open Question: Difficult Economics Problem?

1. Original Growth Lumber makes wood products out of large trees growing on 10,000 acres of mountain land. Original Growth can turn 1 tree into 50 studs or 75 boards. Flatlands Forest Products uses smaller trees grown on a 20,000 acre tree farm and can turn 1 tree into 20 studs or 40 studs. Assuming each producer can process 30 trees per day, find the equations of the PPF's for Original Growth Lumber and Flatlands Forest Products. 2. Lets say it takes 100 studs and 100 boards to build a house. This means that Original Growth Lumber makes lumber for how many houses per day? How many houses per day for Flatlands Forest Products? If each specializes according to comparative advantage, how many houses per day can they produce? more

Open Question: What are some questions to ask the barn owner before 'moving in'?

I'm thinking about switching barns, and found one that I really like. I moved into a barn in April because I only had 30 days to find a new barn after the old one closed, and I thought it would be perfect but it's far from it. I think if I would have looked into it a little more I could have saved myself from the big mess I'm in. So I want to do it right this time. What are some things to ask the owner of a barn before you commit to moving your horse there? What are some "make or break" things that would affect your decision? This barn is a small, private farm that's really close to my house. There's only 6 horses on the property and one other boarder. I like this idea a lot, I'm sick of barn drama and an over crowded barn. Plus my horse will get better care here, especially since I could get out there every day.Yeah, that's the biggest downside for me. I've always had an indoor arena to ride in, and this place doesn't have one. No big deal at all, just something to get used to. :) Thanks for the answers. more

Resolved Question: Toyota power question?

I am looking at a 2010 Toyota Tacoma pickup. I want extended cab, ac, auto, cruise, and a tow hitch. The dealer has a 4 cylinder 4x2 unit that interests me. The price is good. To get to the six cylinder you need to get 4x4. I tow a small (5x8) open utility trailer sometimes. Usually to get manure from a local farm for my wife's garden or the mulch for the bushes, sometimes furniture or appliances. So nothing heavy and not long distances. So the question is: Will the 4 cylinder 4x2 be powerful enough? The specs say: 159 hp @ 5200 rpm for the 4 cylinder and 236 hp @ 5200 rpm for the 6 cylinder. My current Chevy S10 has a 6 cylinder that specs say develops 180 hp @ 4400 rpm. Again do I need the 6 cylinder Toyota? more

Open Question: what would happen if an everyday item was discovered to be a new drug?

what would the DEA do if an everyday plant or seasoning was found to be psychoactive and became commonly and easily abusable (no need to extract the substance, take large doses,). for example: what would happen if a common pine tree was found to be psychoactive by only eating or smoking a small amount of its bark (pine trees grow almost everywhere). i know that pine trees are not psychoactive , but im just saying hypothetically. i know other plants are used for psychedelic purposes and are legal since they either have an unpleasant high or require a time consuming extraction of the drug. im saying : what would the DEA do if a plant that grows almost everywhere in the wilderness became widely abused for psychedelic effects , and it was just as easy as eating an apple to get these effects from the plants. so what would the DEA/US government do if a plant that grows everywhere , is a big part of society (pine trees are part of the "culture" of winter) ,etc. they obviously couldnt cut all the trees down , and they obviously wouldnt get away with "locking up all the wilderness from the public". i know hemp was common back in the day but it was not a plant that grew almost everywhere in the wild , people just grew it in farms. more

Open Question: JUST FOR A BIT OF FUNNNNN?

HORSEBACKHISTORY!!!!! Everyone tell me your horseback storiess :D.. My horseback history My mum bought a beautiful TB, 17.2hh light bay ex - racehorse named Teddy! Boy, was he a stunner? I was 2 when she first bought him and there are pictures of his first day, me sitting on his back and my mum holding on to me so I didn't fall. I had a smile from ear to ear. As I got older and he got very unsafe I wasn't allowed to ride around on his back anymore, so, I would watch him grazing in the field for endless hours. But then my mum put him at livery on a yard. Foot and mouth came, and because I lived on a farm I wasnt allowed to move around and see teddy. When it was (finally) over I straight away went with my mum to see Teddy only to find out he had gotten lame in the field! We brought him home because he had cuts over his body from barbed wire and the stables refused to take it down! Two months, when I was seven, my mum sold teddy! D:... I had been riding a pony called fluffy who was being kept at my house as a favour to my friend but I was so upset that I didn't want to ride anymore (come on I was only small and got in tantrums easily) and later they took fluffy away and moved house to a place with its own stables. I was jealous, I admit. I began riding at a stables (the one where we used to keep teddy) on a grey 15hh thoroughbred,Jasper, who was a bit big for me but was the cutest thing ever! He would honestly carry me over any height of jump and knew exactly how to make me smile! But ofcourse, no good things last forever, and he got lame. He was lame for longer than I thought a horse could be for (I assumed it would only take them a day to get better!!!) and eventually the stables closed down for public use. I tried two different stables, both of which were horrible and expected me to be able to do things that I was too young to do. They gave me a 16hh heavy horse to lead out to the field (i was small at this time), this horse barged and broke my hand. I went about a year without riding and then my mum found this place, a place i love. I got put on a horse, about 15hh tall, palamino cob with long socks. I rode her and suddenly remembered how much I loved riding. My mum said that I had the same grin on my face I did when I first sat on Teddy and my riding teacher said I was way beyond average for my age (which shocked me cos I was guessing what to do as I'd forgotten almost EVERYTHING!). So I was even more excited when they moved me up to a more forward going horse when I was 12 he was a 17.1hh appaloosa 4 year old. This is where my real riding began. I knew I couldn't handle him as soon as I saw him, but I wasn't scared. I looked at him, he was grey with 3 spots (very small spots) and had the most beautiful eyes ever. He was too big for me, my mum said I was tiny on him! He was brilliant and as soon as I sat on him my position was "perfect". I knew he was going to be my faveourite. But I was too young and small to do anything real on him, just tiny jumps and things. So they put me on a Irish Sport Horse 16hh mare. She was INCREDIBLE, I rode her for a year when she became lame (why does this always happen to me?!?!?) and then I had to let her rest for a bit and went back to riding the appy. I suddenly hated him, he'd done nothing wrong, but I wanted my ISH back! He refused to take me over jumps and got scared of trotting poles (hed been mistreated since I'd rode him).. Then the worst happened. The Irish Sports Horse had been put down. Shot. Turned into dog meat.. Literally. I don't think I've ever cried so hard in my life and from then on whenever I sat on the appaloosa I would hate every moment of it until I realised that this was my dream. I became determined to conquor this horse. I bought him a month later when he was six.And guess what? I finished my first show on him 5ft jumping corse with 6 jumps (not many but still), after owning him for a year, and got first! I loved this horse and I knew that he'd got over his fear. Then, as he was on loan because I couldnt afford him after that show, my stables stopped the loan and sold him. That was two days ago. Where is he? I don't know. Two things I do know are: He's not being riden by his new owners because they only need him as a companion. and number 2: I'll not see him again. All the stories so far are amazing! Yes, I do have a youtube channel! ♥ more

Open Question: Why does milk in a glass bottle taste better than the plastic gallon at the grocery store?

I have bought 1% milk from our local grocery store weekly since we've shopped there forever; the milk is from the grocery store's farm; though I have to say I've always thought it tasted a little funny. But the other day I bought 1% milk that was in a glass bottle, from a small dairy market. It tastes so much better than the store bought milk! Why is that? Does it have something to do with bacteria? Or what farm is comes from? more

Resolved Question: About bullies in grade school today?

I was in grade school back in the 70’s. Most of the kids were affluent. The rest were mostly the kids of migrant farm workers (undocumented aliens). I fell into the remaining 10% or so. We were poor, from English speaking families. Most of us had alcoholic fathers, or came from broken families. We were frequently the targets of bullies. It never did any good to tell. The teachers just called us "tattle-tales". The parents of bullies always did not believe that their precious son would go around beating up smaller kids. If I told my father, he only made the situation worse. We discovered bullies are not so tuff. We sent a boy to the hospital once. It seemed that my metal lunch box was a lot harder than his head. I did not stop hitting him until the teacher wrestled the lunch box from me. Yes we all got in trouble….me for nearly fracturing his skull, and the other three for holding him down. It made no difference that we had a lot of witnesses that could attest to the fact that we were justified in our actions. Our parents had to pay for his doctor bills. I have no children (by choice). My friends do. One of my friends tells me it is much worse for his kids today. My question is this; if you have a son that is a bully, and you do not take action, should you not expect him to end up with a fractured skull? What would you expect your son to do if he was the one being bullied? The bullies would hit us, throw food at us, spit on us. One even took a cup in the boys room, filled it with urine, and threw it on us. That was the kid I hit with the lunch box.I do not think there was permanent physical damage. more

Resolved Question: Whats wrong with my cat....?

My cat is 7 in a half she's a good cat I love her SO much I grew up with her and still, but she.. has problems I'll list them (She's a tortoise shell cat, has like a small amount of orange and the rest black) She sings when she's lonely and if you repeat it she'll come to you and meow really loudly When I let her outside she rolls on the pavement and, eats grass (Common) She chases her tail She's addicted to Cat Treats I'm allergic to cats so I have to keep my door closes and she'll meow at the door and try to open the door eventually she does.. She likes to rub her head on sharp things. I love her VERY much I got her when I was 2. I also have 2 other cats but they were here before I knew I was allergic to cats. (About 2 months ago) Also those other cats are farm cats so they bring nasty dead animals and think they'll get an award.. Ha ha. Thanks for reading please post something positive, I really won't care if you post something negative.. more

Voting Question: Worm farm and composting?

Hi, I've just started a veggie garden. So, I thought I'd be environmentally sound and start a worm farm an a composting bin (heat composting). I've read that worms don't have teeth and things should be small enough for quick digestion. So, my question is:- If I put my scraps into the heat composter first, can I add this compost to my worm farm once it's semi-composted? Cheers ;) more

Voting Question: what are the carbon stores?

i got a work sheet saying: The information below summarises the main activities on a small organic farm: Cereal crops and vegetable crops are grown in a field. The fields are fertilized with animal manure. Cows are fed on the meadow during the summer and on hay during the winter from the cereal crops. Free range pigs are kept in a field with metal shelters and they are also fed on excess crops. All other organic waste is composted or burnt. The farm shop sells milk and milk products, vegetables bacon and pork. my questions are what are the 4 main carbon stores? what three ways does carbon come into the farm and what three ways does it leave? more

Voting Question: What's with hip hop styles today?

I hate the fact that many people have enjoyed going through high school with awesome hip hop music, but lately it sucks for me since I'm from a younger generation of untalented loads off rappers who think skinny jeans are amazing, vans look cool, glasses, petite t-shirts are cool, and skateboards are cool and it gives them swag?? I hate how these rappers are giving hip hop such a stupid name nowadays, I loved the Hip hop that I would listen to to hear about stories of the life and struggles of people in the hood, and the stories of success coming out of the hood, drugs, violence and drinking. I mean I loved how it was inspirational at times because it helped me get up and stop feeling bad for my life, when theres people living out there in worse conditions than me. I miss Method Man, Nas, 2Pac, Slick Rick, Eminem, what happened to those guys and their music about struggles and life stories? Even clothing changed in hip hop, before it was baggy Phat Farm,Rocawear, or just any brand of baggy jeans, with a plain baggy white t-shirt and a fitted cap or a baseball cap, nowadays its supid rainbow skinny jeans, vans that look like golf shoes, and tight little v-neck t-shirts that look like they were bought at an infant clothing store. WTF is up with kids of today that like this stuff and think its cool? I miss the retro NBA jerseys that rappers would rock back in the day, the backwards caps, bandanas, sick chains and jewelery, the timbs and boots, nowadays rappers like New Boyz think that turquoise and purple skinny jeans look cool, with a size small v-neck shirt and a scarf and tight fitted cap that shows the shape of your head. I seriusly hate todays music and wish I could have been in high school when the Carter 2 by Lil Wayne was out or the Carter which were two of Lil Wayne is best solo albums out to this day, or when T.I was still a thug and not a pop sellout like today with whatever you like, or when Snoop Dogg still kept it gangsta with the Blue Carpet Treatment releasing singles like Boss' Life ft Nate Dogg and That's that shit with R.Kelly. I miss the hip hop from the 90's to about 2006's 2007ish. You just don't hear rap like that anymore nowadays. Now its all about jerkin and vans! Please tell me what to do I can't cope with seeing idiot kids in my school dress like stupid jerkers, I want baggy jeans and baggy tees to go back into style! more

Voting Question: Getting the other insurance to pay medical bills from auto accident?

My daughter was ia passenger involed in an auto accident that was not her fault. Both my daughter and her boyfriend sought medical care and his insurance paid 100%. After she was done treating she contacted the party at faults insurance and asked for a small amount for her pain/suffering and for them to reimburse the medicla payments so that she could pay back her boyfriends insurance that paid the medical bills. She was offered not even close to what the medical payments were. She has been going back and forth with them and they are only offering $2,100. The party that hit them said that (State Farm) that they are basing their amount on reasonable and necessary medical and general damages. We are in California and I was told that the insurance copanies do not subrigate to get the money back from the other insurance, even if they are at fault. I think this is awful that the at fault insurance (state farm) will not even pay 100% of her medical bills, which were reasonable and necessary. They are not doctors, so how would they know. That's why we even had a report filed and sent by the doctor. Should we sue in small claims and if so, do we sue State Farm (at faults insurance) and the driver? I'm not really sue what to do and do not want to hire an attorney. That will drag it mon forever and then he will want money. I am hoping that if we file in small claims and the insured gets a summons for being sued this will prompt the insurance company to pay what is their responsability. Or, should she just accept the $2,100 and walk away. more

Resolved Question: How important is raising your child around animals?

Such as pets or just animals in general. My partner annd i both love animals. so to us we hope it is important as we hope she is the same. We currently own 2 dogs and 1 huge (mini panther) cat. unfortunately our rats died before she was born. We are also planning on getting a chicken or 2. Unsure how our cat will deal with them though... In another 3years our plan is to move out of town a llittle way and get chickens, ducks, horses, pigs, sheep and a cow or 2. oh and a llama ♥. kind of like a farm. but more for playing then eating. (the eating animals i wont befriend) anyways, If you dont have the space for pets (ie- small unit or no yard area) Do you take your child to the zoo/ wildlife park ect? And if you do bring your children up around animals, what animals does your child like best? Elissa is mesmerised by our cat. Stares at him all day long. Crawls up to him and pats him gently. so cute. How wouldnt it be a healthy environment? they wouldnt be inside our house. and she will be close to four by then. hmm. opinions on why you dont think it is healthy environment plz? =)oh sorry, when i said out of town, to me that automatically means owning a few acres as out of town where i am is bush. it would be a large property. with proper pens ect. We are waiting until she is 4, so one yr before she will start school.we would be aiming for 20 acres absolulte minimum. more

Resolved Question: You think its right for Farmers to mock Citizens who are looking for work?

UFW to Unemployed Citizens: Take Our Jobs! September 3, 2010 - 11:42 AM | by: Claudia Cowan Unemployed Americans can find work on farms. That's the message the United Farmworkers of America is trying to get across with it's "Take Our Jobs" campaign. In response to calls for a crackdown on illegal immigration, the union is offering to train citizens to get food from field to truck to table. "We're giving that opportunity to any American that's unemployed right now, that really wants to see how it is to work in agriculture today," says Arturo Rodriguez, president of the UFW. But Rick Oltman with non-profit Californians for Population Stabilization says the program is a far cry from a real job training opportunity. "This is a political stunt," he says, "that's designed to continue to push the idea that we need to keep the borders open to allow illegal aliens to flood into our country." Union organizers say anyone is welcome to take them up on their offer-- but few have, given the backbreaking labor and difficult working conditions. Rodriguez says he can understand why only a handful of people have shown interest. "The fact that you're going to be working out in the hot sun, it's going to be a hundred degrees plus, no air conditioning, often times no shade for the workers.. they're not ready to tolerate those kinds of conditions." But critics argue those conditions and low wages are perpetuated by the influx of cheap Mexican labor. They say securing the border would result in a labor shortage, driving up wages and sparking competition to get even the toughest farmworker jobs. "There are no jobs people won't do, only wages that people won't accept. If we saw some fair wages for farmworkers, we would probably see more americans lining up for these jobs, as we are in other industries where there are those very few job openings," Oltman says. Of course, "fair" wages would mean significant price hikes for American produce, leaving stores and shoppers to choose between cheap fruits and vegetables from south of the border, or higher priced goods picked by their neighbors. In this economy, the union says, that's no choice at all. Critics insist it's a small price to pay for putting Americans back to work, and securing the border. Read more: http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/09/03/ufw-to-unemployed-citizens-take-our-jobs/#ixzz0yUxfVp4uThey are not really offering work you know. If anyone does take the jobs they will be discriminated against. We all know that and some may even wind up dead in a ditch. My God how did this country get to this point? Are we not a nation of Laws?I can tell you this that the illegals did not work as hard as the Americans did. Those Americans who took the jobs were mistreated just to prove a point. Dirty trick indeed. more

Open Question: My family is thinking of starting a farm...?

So, my family is looking at a 75 acre property of farmland 9 miles out of Ann Arbor, MI. I guess it's my job to ask all the necessary questions they have :). We have never owned a farm before, and we want to own one that maybe we can make some money on and have fun with. We want to start small. The farm already has 2 small barns, a stable, and a quonset hut, not to mention two fenced in pastures, slaughterhouse, and a chicken coop. It was built in 1899, but everything is pretty sturdy, If we bought the farm, we will do some little fixing up, too. So, here are my questions, if you can answer them: -How much would it cost to own a couple of hens and broilers, maybe some sheep, and some goats (yearly)? -We want our farm to be self-sustaining. What crops would we need to do that? How much would those crops cost? -To earn a little more money, we were thinking of growing some flowers or pumpkins and maybe doing some fruit trees or raspberries. Would this be a good idea? How much would this cost? -Of course, we want the standard veggies, too, like tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, squash, onions, and herbs. Costs? -Would hiring a farm manager be a good idea? As I said, we want to start small. Is this doable for a family of four? We're all super excited if it will work out. If it isn't, though, what could we change? Obviously, we wouldn't be using up all 75 acres with the above. My parents we talking about renting the space to other farmers, then sharecropping. We would definitely try to grow our own straw/hay, but we don't think we could manage a whole cornfield. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: What company in the bread basket or arid states would profit from millions of gallons of free river water?

If a company that can earn a profit from this learns of it, they will make it happen. If you know of a company that can profit from this, tell them! A company could charge money to take the water away, and then on the other end of the pipe sell it! Or take it for free with government approval and then sell it! How much would it boost the economy of an arid state like Arizona if they had a large replenish able water source for irrigation, hydroponics, fishing, recreation? How much would it boost the economy of a state like Kansas (wheat fields as far as you can see) if they had a large replenish able water source? How much would it boost the economics of a large agricultural corporation if they had a large replenish able fresh water source? Water and oil, these two things can really drive an economy, just try farming with out one of them or a limited supply of one of them. Where to put the millions of gallons of water the great pump project was meant for and funds allocated for? Every year in the spring the Ole Mississippi river floods, levees break, some people die, Billions of dollars in damages and losses occur. This is a very dramatic and tragic event for some. The Federal government allocated money for Great pumps to be installed near Yazoo Mississippi to remove water from the river and take pressure off the levees. The problem is, the county Yazoo is in has no where to go with the water, no one in their county wants it, and no one in neighboring counties want it. Is it to far out of the realm of possibilities to build a pipe line to huge reservoirs dug in desert states like Arizona, Texas or Nevada? Or how about the bread basket states like Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, these states are having water table problems due to heavy irrigation. With a project like this, these heavy water users could draw upon this water for irrigation, and leave the ground water for drinking. Yes, underground pipe lines, just like the huge oil companies do, yes we would have to condemn most of the right of way to do it, but they can farm over it. Once in the reservoir of the arid state/bread basket state it could be used in very well thought out processes, like hydroponics and other crops that utilize the water well; only well thought efficient uses to be allowed. The reservoir could have two main levels, the second level is a level we do not draw away from more, because this level has gentle slopes and is a second fishing ground. Boating and recreational aspects could/should also be enjoyed with this resource! This would generate thousands of jobs in the agricultural communities and save a lot of drama and heartache in the flood areas. I still remember the Mayor of a small town in Tennessee when the Tennessee river recently deluged his city, he said "there is just no place to go with all the water!". The Tennessee river, Ohio river, Missouri rivers, the Waspininski (Wapsi river, in Iowa) and probably a few others I am unaware of all have dire flooding events every year and could benefit from a pump project. Not that long ago Obama said, there are 85 million less jobs in the US of A now, and 85 million people are just going to have to reinvent themselves. This is not a handout, and the new jobs will make us stronger. The thousands of workers who will have jobs because of this will not be unemployed and will be paying taxes. The job it saves may even be yours or a loved ones! Environmental impact statements needed? OK, here is an environmental impact statement. To save the levees, and billions and damages, we pumped water out of the river. We put a big screen over the inlet to sift out the gators. NO GATORS WERE HARMED! Actually before the great pump project was allocated money, an environmental impact statement was probably done. more

Resolved Question: Capitalists, can you explain to me why Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights was/is a bad idea?

It is our duty now to begin to lay the plans and determine the strategy for the winning of a lasting peace and the establishment of an American standard of living higher than ever before known. We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our people—whether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenth—is ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure. This Republic had its beginning, and grew to its present strength, under the protection of certain inalienable political rights—among them the right of free speech, free press, free worship, trial by jury, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. They were our rights to life and liberty. As our nation has grown in size and stature, however—as our industrial economy expanded—these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness. We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.”[2] People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made. In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed. Among these are: The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation; The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation; The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living; The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad; The right of every family to a decent home; The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health; The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment; The right to a good education. All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being. For unless there is security here at home there cannot be lasting peace in the world.-Franklin D. Roosevelt http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Bill_of_Rights http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EZ5bx9AyI4While I support neither the Democratic/Republican parties, Roosevelt was/is a man I can throw my support behind.Thomas D: It would - and can - work. There is no proof that says otherwise. There is plenty of evidence that says our Capitalist, self-serving economy can't, however.I'm Bored: That is such bullsh%t. The "free" market is a corrupt economic entity that benefits only the top minority while providing the illusion of prosperity for the bottom majority. We have bought this farce hook, line, and sinker - and we are suffering for it. more

Open Question: Does he like me? What should I do?

I'm 17 years old and I like this older guy. I've kinda known him for years(my family rents our farm from his father and we've been there for years), and I've had a crush on him(I think he's hot, I know some about him but not enough to really know him). So recently I've noticed him a lot more and I kinda think he's noticing me more. Like I saw him a couple weeks ago and he started a conversation with me(a small one but it's the most he's ever talked to me in a couple years-my cousin said my face lit up when I saw him) and he held the door open for me(we ran into each other at the store) and when we were in the store, I could see him looking at me. Well the next night we ran into each other again, our eyes met, but I turned around so fast my cousin said It must look like I was dreading seeing him but I was just so in shock of seeing him again but he still looked over at me when we were in the store. So a day later I saw him driving out of the lane our farm/his dad's house(his dad lives behind our farm) and before I could respond he smiled and waved at me, I smiled and waved back. A couple times before that he's waved at me while driving and once he honked his horn twice at me when he saw me. Does this mean anything? Like is he noticing ME? What should I do? Am I over-reacting at everything and making it more than it really is? I know he's single right now but looking and I reallllyyyyy want him to know that I like him. But how can I do that without seeming immature? Like I said he's an older guy so I want to be mature about it...how can I drop hints? What should I do? I need advice! Here's what I know about him: He used to play basketball and football back in High School(my friend's mom has a son his age and she told me this), he's a total farm boy that likes horses(like I do!) and other animals, he has a little boy from a previous relationship, he's polite and nice, likes hunting and four wheelers. (Please no mean comments) Thanks! (I've already asked this once but only got one answer) more

(Please no mean comments) Thanks!Sorry It's So Long! more

Resolved Question: Many see my attitude towards sex, reproduction, and child raising as at best irresponsible, and at worst?

inhuman, why? My view on sex reproduction, and child raising is that they are completely separate, or at least should be. Sex: Sex is for pleasure and building emotional bonds, if it's not fun... don't do it. But don't make any more out of it than it is. Reproduction: Reproduction, the act of creating a life inside you, should be seen as a duty. But just because you acknowledge this duty, does not mean you have any desire to raise a child. Child raising: There are literally hundreds of thousands of parents across the world who can't have children for one reason or another who desperately want a child, girls should be encouraged to have children to give to these childless couples, not ostracized for it. I have been told by many many people that my beliefs are "unnatural" and "irresponsible" but why? Every child deserves to be in a home where they are loved, and every woman should be able to, and in fact encouraged to, have children so they can pass on their gene's if nothing else. Also, though as has been proven by the nut-ball who took the discovery-channel hostage the other day there are differences of opinion on the subject, an argument can be made that our current economic woes are due in large part to our current population shortage. The argument as far as we who believe the population is too small goes as such, give every individual on the planet a one room apartment, an efficiency if you will, 2,000 sq ft. and every human on the planet could be housed in the state of texas. The common argument against is "Every human requires an acre in total for food, and living space" but this is no longer the case, with modern farming techniques we have increased food yields by roughly x6, so each 6 humans require an acre. So just off that figure, we could easily increase the human population to 36 billion, and we have yet to utilize even a quarter of the earth's surface, let alone subterranean farms and such. But as a trans humanist I could literally write a book on the subject, so I digress. But leaving whether there is a population shortage or not off the table, what is wrong with the base of my view on sex, reproduction, and child raising? To the first answerer, I didn't mean forced of course, I just mean that if someone has a child and doesn't want it, they should be encouraged to give it up to people who do, instead of discouraged and told to keep it. Also, I see having children as a duty to the species, but not everyone follows even duties to themselves, and I don't believe they should be made to. I just want them to be aware that I feel it is a duty. Second answerer, I refer to some women as girls, and some girls as women (though more rarely), it has more to do with the way they treat life. Girls have an active joy in life, women are generally more calm and staid. It is like what I have told many older people. There is a big diference between being old, and being elderly. Being old is a matter of time, it happens to us all. Being elderly is a mental condition.Andrew, You read this by skimming apparently. I answered every point you raised in the body of the question. Also, when reffering to something as integral to the species as reproduction, both Social and Biological charachteristics must be considered. more
