Open Question: How heavy of a lawn roller can a garden tractor pull?

I am building a lawn roller out of a 300 gallon gas tank. I am going to fill it with water. At 8 lbs a gallon i am looking a 2400lbs plus weight of tank(125-200lbs). So Total weight will be about 2500-2700lbs. I have a john deere 3520 that would pull it no problem. But the tires are the industrial tires that are between ag and turf. They dont tear up the yard to bad but still leave their mark. I am afraid that if i use the JD to pull the roller the tractor and roller will just cancel eachother out and not really make the ground smooth. I have also got a case 444 that has turf tires and is a garden tractor but seems to be built more like the bigger tractors.(bigger back tires etc.) My question is would this pull the roller if i made the tounge long enough? Or would the JD with the industrial tires not be that bad and would still roll the yard good? more

Workman admitted he caused damage as did his manager who was called to the scene. Now had letter from council saying they wont pay for damage as took 'reasonable precautions' by regular inspections of grass area and mower guards. In 12 years i have never seen grass inspected and drag mowers to my knowledge dont have guards stopping kick up of stones. Do i have a chance of winning in court? more

Voting Question: 1979 John Deere 314 Kohler Engine, DANA Rear End. Supertech Universal Farm Hydraulic Fluid ok to use?

1979 John Deere 314 - Riding Garden Tractor I am going to drain my common system transmission/ diff/rear end for the tractor. John Deere Hy-Guard fluid is pretty expensive & just more than anything far to drive to get. So I found a thing that said you can use: John Deere's Fluid or Ford Type F. Well I went to walmart & they had Super Tech (yellow cap) Universal Farm Tractor Hydraulic Fluid. On the back is Lists you can use for Ford New Holland & John Deere Spec: J20, J21A etc. It also says for common hydraulic systems. Meaning transmission/rear end hydraulics. Anyone know for sure if this is ok to use? more

Resolved Question: Can I use a tiller on a rocky hill?

I just recently had a house built and most of the yard came with sod. The very back of the yard, however is a hill with a good amount of rocks and a ton of weeds. The hill is not too steep as the land developer is able to have pros come out and cut the weeds down with riding lawnmowers every so often. Anyway, the homeowners associations states that I am supposed to establish grass in this area, which I want to do anyway because the weeds look terrible and are trying to spread into my yard. I tried putting grass seed and letting that overtake the weeds like my builder suggested, but I'm having no luck. The people at Tractor Supply and Home Depot both say to use a tiller but I am terrified of using it on top of all those rocks. My neighbor has a tiller she uses in her garden once a year but again I'm afraid of destroying it due to the rocks. So, can a tiller be used on a rocky hill to clear the weeds? If not, what can be used? Chemicals are out of the question because of a nearby lake and laws that won't allow it. more

Resolved Question: Will wheat grow this late?

I recently found some wheat on the side of the road close to my house. It must have fallen off a tractor or something, but anyways, I decided to take some home and see if I couldn't grow a handful of it in my garden. I believe that the wheat seeds are Spring Wheat, since they were just recently harvesting around here. I plowed a small section about 7ft by 4ft and planted the seeds around an inch deep. I'm not expecting to get too much out of it(if I do end up getting any), but I figure I could get some experience out of it(and possibly more seed). Anyways, I planted the seeds around June 25th. Is this too late for the seeds to grow? more

Voting Question: I'm volunteering at a small horse ranch and could use some ideas to make the work go a bit faster?

I've only started recently and the biggest job so far is clearing the field. What they do is drive a tractor that pulls a wagon through the field, shovel the manure into the wagon and then drive it to the future garden site. The tractor is very hard to back directly up to the garden because the wagon seems to have a mind of its own and wants to go around in circles so if anyone has any tips or tricks to use for backing it up in a straight line then I'd appreciate that. Every 100 tries or so you get it backed up sort of near where it's supposed to be and then there's a lever you can pull that gets the wagon to tilt. It's very heavy though so you still have to push everything out of it which takes a while. My simplest thought was that I could line the wagon with a tarp and then once the wagon's tilted I could pull on the tarp and empty it that way. I'm afraid that the manure will be too heavy though. Would this work? What else might work? Please don't suggest buying new machinery because that's not going to happen- at least not right now. Any other help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Garden tractor or zero turn mower?

I need a mower to cut approx.3 acres. I can not go over 2500 dollars without taking the chance of other bills not getting paid. I've been looking at two mowers on the lowes website. Resolved Question: have we reached 'peak stupid' on the climate denial?

out in the real world, the latest rash of stupid denial memes seem to be loosing steam. got chatting on the train yesterday with some oz. tourists about the weather, just had to try to explain about the NAO and ENSO (oops, should have just stuck to gardening and the state of the murray darling river basin) and a chap weighed in with 'al gore' and the 'email scandal' etc.(he later turned out to be a tractor salesman). but the initially skeptic and 'science virgin' ozzies seemed more interested and influenced by my science stuff, and took the name of an oz. climate site down to check out when they got home. then we got onto solar power, and surpries! all in agrement that it is a good thing, even the tractor man. smiles all round, talk turned to lovely scotland (i decided not to get started on the clearences). taking the tourists as the 'swayable skeptics' i reckon this was very encouraging, they easily saw the point that any amount of politics is irrelevant, its the science that matters. have we passed 'peak stupid'? can we now just get on with just sorting out the mess?oh dear what a lot of 'just's! sorry.paul, it was getting sticky before that - tractor man was a real alpa male and starting to get a bit riled that i didnt collapse in tears at his baiting, he had to try and make out he was just having a laugh winding up the hippie. it could have gone two ways - i really was on the point of loosing it. he attacked me personally but i could honestly say my fotprint is half uk average and why, at which he started to laugh and wink at the ozzies and make winding motions. he had already had a pop at wind power and wasnt happy i countered his rubbish with hard figures on payback times. so i went for the obvious common ground (for me) generation nuclear, which he was obviously all for, i tried to explain fast reactors and everyones eyes started to glaze, and i was making a hash of it anyway so i switched mid flow to solar, and it was like coming out of a tunnel. all four of us saying yes, yes, smiling, relieved to be out of the spat. so my reccomendation, go for solar as the common ground.napoleon, you are a pathetic little pawn of the oil industry, and you doint even know it. now that was patronising. want some more?nuclear - 4th generation fast reactors. haha cant even write it right let alone explain in an entertaining way to an audience. i wont try that again for a while.<passes Dana a big steaming mug of - err - tea> i dont see how it can possibly get any more 'stupid' even in the u.s., what you say is quite alarming, please, please let this be the peak. i bought a clematis called 'the president' when obama was elected. it's flowering now, a lovely clear blue, and a very healthy plant - no sign of wilt. not a very scientific proxy i know, but i think that the people of sense and good intent will prevail.<throws bucket of greenland melt water over dana and paul's alias> paul b, yes, we will see..... first grade, i agree :-D more

Resolved Question: A Question Regarding Sexual Harassment In The Workplace?

There seems to be a potential sexual harassment situation brewing at my place of employment. A little background. First, I work for Hoffman's Manure and Farming Outlet in Cabot Cove, Maine. Its like a "mom and pop" version of Tractor Supply Company. We sell all types of farming and gardening tools and equipment. I am the branch manager for this particular store, as we have three in the greater Portland area. I have worked here for over 20 years and am well respected in the community. Last week I hired a young man named Elroy to work in the warehouse. He's 22 years old and he's a damn good worker. So yesterday I was picking up invoices and inventory from Greg Adams (he is the foreman of the warehouse) and as I was leaving the warehouse on my way back to my office, I noticed Elroy bending over and picking up some pallets and stacking them to be shipped out. He has a damn nice ass and he's a handsome young man. So I asked him casually if he would like to get some shit on his dick. He actually tried to punch me in the face. His outburst was so outrageous that I fired him on the spot and now he's threatening a sexual harassment lawsuit and a wrongful termination lawsuit against me and the company. I called him tonight and apologized for having to fire him and told him if he would come over to my home and give my pecker a good rubbing and a good sucking that I would rehire him and we could put the whole thing behind us. But he flatly refused and called me a number of hurtful, awful, names that truly embarrassed me. Should I just consider this a lost cause and get an attorney to fight his flimsy lawsuits or should I give him another chance? more

I got a free MTD front tine tiller. It was pretty old, the foam air filter crumbled into dust when I poked it with my finger. So I put a new 6.5 horse engine on it, replaced the 2 drive belts and started it up. It seems to run fine. I normally work up my garden with a 2 bottom plow and a 6' disk on a diesel tractor, but I can't get inbetween 30" rows with a 72" disk. Working the tiller is like wrestling a bear. The thing drags me around and swings me left and right. Sometimes the gang of tines dig a hole and I have to wrestle it forwards and backwards out of the hole. What's the proper way to operate a tiller? I can't see my wife operating this, cause it takes most of my strength to handle it (and I weigh 220, 100 lbs more than her). The tines aren't very sharp. Would it be easier to operate with sharper tines? more

Voting Question: Faster garden tractor?

I am entering a garden tractor race. I have a 1978 wheel horse C-10 (10 horsepower) garden tractor. Can anyone tell me how I can get the max performance out of this tractor with very minor adjuctments and on the cheap. (I would prefer to spend less than $100 on any modifications... after all this is only a garden tractor race not the indy 500). Thanks in advance for any help! more

Resolved Question: i am writing a letter to farm loan for a tractor how does this sound?

i need a little advice for putting more in this letter. i have to send them a letter with what im going to do with the loan for them to approve it i have to send them a letter telling them what i want. this is what i got so far. To whom it may concern: My name is Jordan Isaac Reese. I am interested in starting a small farm. My interest in starting a small farm is my love of working with animals and farming is something that I would love to do. Me and my family will be working on this farm. I am interested in building a pond to stock with catfish and all sorts of fish. I would like to invest into some livestock such as cattle, goats, and maybe some pigs. I would like to build a chicken coop with some laying hens. I have a interest in gardening to sale the vegetables. The farm equipment that I would need to run my farm would be a new Holland tractor with a cab PTO a loader. that would be useful with everything that is needed to be done. With the economy the way it is I feel the need to grow and produce as much food as possible, to make a decent living. I would like to tell you a little bit about my self. I have always had a interest in the outdoors. I have built two homes with the help of my grandfather and I do landscaping and yard mowing. And my father is a diesel mechanic which he will fix any problems I might run into while using the tractor. He has been teaching me about working on diesel engines. more

Resolved Question: How can i decrease my gardens PH?

I recently got my garden tested for PH which i used last year and my neighbors garden which he is just starting this year, both came out to 7.5 Alkaline. We probably shouldnt have been surprised because the valley we live in actually long ago used to be a limestone quarry. Our gardens are about 10,000sq ft. Mines in a square and his is in a rectangle. He used to have cows and i still have a few llamas so we both have what some might some consider fresh, and "aged manure" although i would think "Aged" means in some drying area but we dont do that. Anyways we are working together on this and sharing equipment and work so we can both feed our families. We are looking for some way to decrease our PH to about 6.5 or 7 would be good, because thats where our plants like. I grew some food in mine last year but it could have done better which sounds consistent with being outside the ideal PH range. I have heard of Aluminum sulfur or something like that and we really dont want to use that if its a chemical thats not natural. Also we looked into composting and that was to confusing and time intensive especially on our scale which we mostly do by hand and tractor but fixing tractors takes time and money, so we try to limit our use of those. Anyways we're a month away from planting which i know is not ideal but is there anything we can do to start the process of changing the PH but still be able to plant? Any idea will do. Oh i also heard about Manure tea and pine needles. And he has 50gallon drums and i have a few hundred feet of pine trees. So thats a option to if we need to. Let me know what you guys think, thank you! more
