Welcome to Farm Questions and Answers

Open Question: Tell me about your dream farm :D?

Tell me what you want in a dream farm. Do you want a breeding farm, or a boarding barn, or what? Do you want it to be primarily one discipline, or many different disciplines? Tell me what you want it to look like, and what you want it to have! I'll tell you mine now: I want to own a HUGE farm that's mainly boarding, lessons, and training, but also a rescue barn and a breeding barn (Don't worry, no grade horses, good, warmblood show horses), and my own vet practice (I want to be an equine vet). I also want to have show grounds. I already have a boarding cost plan worked out for boarding options(LOL) and everything even though I'm only thirteen. I want everything to be built out of cream stone. I want to have lots of trails, a couple of indoor arenas (One jumping, and one that's split into dressage arenas), three-five outdoor arenas (Grass and sand for jumping, grass and sand for dressage), all the amenities (Hot walker, hot/cold wash stall, PRIVATE tack lockers, etc.) and stalls for 50 horses in the boarding/lesson barn. I literally want a HUGE stable. I mean, I'd start small, but I'd want to expand into something that is BIG. What about you guys? more

Open Question: I don't know how to stop?

I have a really big problem and I need some help. When I see someone in the street that I don't like the look of I always shout out insults at them. It's really embarrassing and I always feel really bad afterward, but I know that if I tried to go and apologize to them I would end up shouting at them again. I know I don't have Tourettes and my parents have even put me through a short course of counseling to try and fix me, but none of it worked. I really need some advice because I can't help it if I see a fat person or a black person or anyone foreign; I honestly don't have anything against them they just really make my blood boil and I always end up thinking things like I wish they would go back to their sugar cane farms and stuff like that. I don't have any friends because SO MUCH OF OUR COUNTRY IS MADE UP OF FOREIGNERS. My parents are really ashamed of me and say that if I can't reign in my tongue then they might have to send me away from home. I don't know where they would send me, but I just can't handle it if it's anywhere abroad. I think I might go crazy if I'm surrounded by foreign people in their native habitat, especially if it's one of those freakhole places where they do voodoo dances around camp fires and praise animals and stuff. I can't handle their eyes or skin colour either. It just really, really freaks me out. I wouldn't normally be worried but both my brothers live abroad so I'm starting to think that my parents might send me to live with them. If any of you have any advice on how to contain my anger at the losers that walk my streets, please help me, because I don't know what else I can do. more

Open Question: I think the NBA has at least 5 teams too many. Which 5 teams would you remove to make a better league?

1. New Jersey Nets: Nobody in the New York area cares about the Nets and they couldn't even sell out Conference finals games when they went to the finals. 2. Memphis Grizzlies: Farm team for the NBA and Nobody in Tennesse cares about them. 3. Los Angeles Clippers: L.A doesn't need two teams and Donald Sterling is an embarassment. 4. Minnesota Timberwolves: Another team with a half empty arena 5. New Orleans Hornets: I know this won't be popular but they struggle to fill their arena even with a good team and this just isn't an NBA market. Remember I'm NOT talking so much about these teams as much as I'm saying their markets aren't that interested in supporting them. more

I try to be polite at all times and I'm an old man who has had to work for a living. But to a few people whom I would like to apply this to will know who they are. As far as my spelling or wording in my question and the way I ended it as well as this being the first pc I've ever owned, I feel that I'm doing pretty darn good. Unlike you learnerd souls who where raised on one of these things in school. I asked questions and not The coments I got. I'm not even a high school grade. Farm work, construction, and driving across these states gave me a pretty good education I figure. So I guess I'm a grumppy old man who will let your water run of my back. Open Question: So, I'm having a chicken dilemma...?

I have a friend who works at one of the local farm stores. They're having a chick sale, as they do every year. My friend is telling me stories about how people are coming in and buying chicks based on 'cuteness' value, and that most of those chicks aren't going to live into adulthood because of the quality of care they're bound to get. It may sound childish, but this just kills me. I feel sorry for those chicks, and I really want to buy some of my own. I've raised chickens before from chicks--quite successfully. I have all that I need to set up and start, with the exception of a chicken coop. They won't need that until adulthood, and I've found some easy plans so that's not the problem here. My main issue with chickens is once they're adults, they like to wander the yard. It's impossible for me to build a coop to satisfy them daily, so they'd have to be out during the day and cooped up at night. Not a problem--but I've had problems in the past with hawks getting them, even during the day. I guess that's my dilemma--I want to sort of 'save' these chickens (they'd be egg-layers) but I'm also worried it would be selfish, as they'd run the risk of something happening to them during the daytime hours. What do you think? Sorry it's so long. The coop I'm building would be fine at night; I meant during the day. The last time I bought chickens from this store, they sold black australorps, brown leghorns, and rhode island reds I believe. I'm not sure what they're selling now. I personally liked the leghorns...I haven't found much on the internet about their personalities, but mine were always docile and friendly. The reds are my least favorite, they were always the most aggressive. more

Open Question: can you recommend some books for me?

Ok so I'm a big reader. I don't read just for fun. But if I find a book that interests me, I'll read it. Im 14 and a girl. But I'm more mature in musical and literary taste than my fellow teens. (I'm not into rap or pop, I like Beatles, Queen, Aerosmith, etc. I DO NOT read Twilight!!) Lately for a book report I've been reading some classic books on totalitarian governments and communism. I read Animal Farm, Nineteen Eighty-Four (LOVE IT) and I just finished Fahrenheit 451. I find those so interesting, and they opened my mind up. Because people think that in 1984, when the government is trying to control what Winston is thinking, they think it is farfetched. But in real life, the media is trying to control how we think! And I just love those kinds of books that teach you something, and allow you to look at the world in a different way. So can you recommend a book for me? Thanks! (P.S. I'm in the middle of Catcher in the Rye) more

Open Question: Did you have interesting Social Studies and Language arts classes offered in your Junior....?

...High or High School? Any .....interesting topics? I took "Folk, Rock, Blues, Lyrics as Poetry," "Animal Farm and Other Animal Stories" and "Ecology" all in Junior High. Also offered as a Language arts choice were "Old Testament as Literature" and "New Testament as Literature." In seventh grade we had a Debate class that could knock the socks off the ninth graders and we knew the appropriate way to score points, unlike the presidential debates. I went to school in the mid 1970's. By the time my kids got in school they seemed to abandon choice. They had 1 elective a day, otherwise they had to fit in the "round hole" no matter what shape peg they were. Did you have any choice? What interesting classes did you take? more

Open Question: Meat eaters... dont you feel bad when you realise how intelligent animals are?

The timesonline reported that 'Cows are also capable of feeling strong emotions such as pain, fear and even anxiety — they worry about the future.' Why isnt this enough to make you re-think your ways? Cows, sheep and pigs are often found in the top 20 most intelligent animal lists also. You wouldn't eat your own cat or dog so why farm animals? By the way i know when i post this i will probably get a few negative answers... I do believe everyone has a right to their own opinion... im just trying to understand that opinion.Actually Daniel, cows are herbivorours, so no it wouldnt eat you if it could! lolummm i have so many things i want to say in reply but i will probably forget them all! err the person that was rambling on about health care and stuff... i really dont understand what you mean and besides im from england so my healthcare is free! Im not saying I am only a vegetarian because animals are intelligent... i though of eating flesh and blood makes me feel sick. I have also adopted a friendly cow called alfie who was saved from the slaughter house and he is so lovely and loves nothing more than a good stroke! I just cant imagine why anyone would want to eat him! umm the answer that said you are a student... im a student and i quite happily can afford veggie things. I do believe some of you do have some strong opinions and answers which i can not argue with, which i respect. But those who just say 'the cow cant wait to be a beefburger' I think that is a pretty dumb answer!oh and as the most intelligent animal we have a right to choose what we eat. We can survive on a veggie diet and can get all the nutrients we need from meat from other sources. So no i would not tell a lion to stop eating a deer because he probably doesnt know better! ive seen some things which happen in a slaughter house and they are disgusting. more

Open Question: What is wrong with me? I love to make fun of people who are less fortunate then me?

I know it sounds bad, but for example, sometimes when im driving around the city, and i see black people, i like to just roll down my window and yell *****N *****ER! and then i laugh my *** off! i know it sounds sick but i actually enjoy it. I do the same thing to poor people, like when im stopped at a red light and i see a homeless person with a sign, i will roll down my window so they think im going to give them something, and then ill pull some money out and tease them, LOL! oh and another thing i enjoy is when i go into the local cumberland farms store for something, there is always this fat lady working, and she has a bench to sit on cause she's so fat, i will put the money at the very end of counter so she has to get up and reach over to me and get it. Open Question: Honda ATV losing power?

Today it was really muddy so I decided to not take out my new trx250ex and instead ride my older 2006 trx250tm farm quad. I realized today how when I SLAM in the gas (by slam I mean put it all the way) and I noticed the tires dont instantly throw the dirt. It takes about 1 second after I put in the gas (aka throttle) it then gains its power.. or if I am already moving it has power instantly. so basically the quad doesnt have power (or is this considered torque? idk) when its sitting completely still. This is annoying to me, for plenty of reasons and because I can't do wheelies on my farm quad from a dead stop. Is there something to clean or change that will give me that power back? -ThanksP.S. Open Question: Does anyone know of a good diet cookbook?

My husband is seeing a doctor for high blood pressure. His doctor wants him to lose weight and exercise. He has been exercising 3 to 4 times a week and is trying to limit calories. He went to see a nutritionist/dietitian today. It was a total waste of time and money. All she could recommend is what a diet book that my husband has been using already. Cut out certain foods and exercise, which my husband was already doing. She said to limit sodium intake also. This is information that I already knew as a former nurse aide. I also have been trying to lose weight, but my problem is related to hormone changes. My husband's mother had a thyroid problem and couldn't lose weight. She saw dietitians, joined weight watchers with no success. Her family doctor found out that her metabolism was out of whack. This is why she couldn't lose the weight. She was given medication and she started losing weight. I'm thinking this is what the problem might be with my husband. Sometimes the problem can be organic in nature. We are going to really try to stick with the diet from the book. My husband lost 20 pounds 3 years ago. However, I would like to find a good cookbook with tasty meals that are fast and easy. I like to cook but I don't like the mess of cooking. I have a very tiny kitchen with absolutely no counter space. A stove that is 30+ years old and only 2 of the burners work. So if I do cook it has to be a one pan recipe. My husband doesn't like tomatoes at all. I can't eat cabbage, nuts, pork because I'm allergic to all of these items. He loves cabbage, nuts, pork. He's almost 100% German ancestry. I'm almost 90% English/Irish ancestry. So he doesn't like what I make and I really can't eat what he likes. The dietitian said that corn is a starch and shouldn't be used much. I grew up on a large farm and thought corn was extremely healthy and rich in vitamins. I really didn't care for her ideas on food much. Can anyone please recommend a healthy cookbook? Thanks. more

Open Question: "Survival Kit" for College Student Visiting Relatives?

I'm a college student visiting relatives up in Iowa for my Spring Break (my grandfather is sick, and I want to make sure I see him as much as possible). However, I'll be on a farm, in a small town, without knowing anyone but my grandfather, my mother, and my other relatives. Even though I'll enjoy catching up with family, I also know that this isn't the "typical" spring break for a college student, and that it will be boring at times. My question is: How can I have fun on this break? Also, what should I bring for that 15 hour car ride and down-time? Thanks so much! more
