moreResolved Question: How long until feral kittens leave the mother?
I live in an area surrounded by farms so there are a lot of feral cats/kittens around, but one of these cats is extremely friendly towards me, and decided to have her kittens in my garden! They are now roughly 2 months old, they have lost the blue from their eyes and the mother cat no longer feeds them milk, but she still sleeps with them, grooms them and plays with them, she is a very loving mother! I am just wondering how long will it be before she gets sick of them and will no longer be like this towards them, or will they always share a special bond?I am rehoming them with the mother :) My grandmother last cat died recently, and the mother is an excellent hunter/farm cat so all 3 kittens plus mommy are going together :) But Im wondering if she has another litter of kittens will she push off these current ones?Im not getting her spayed, she isnt my cat so it will be up to my grandmother to do it, im 17 years old with no source of income so paying €160 per cat is not an option for me, my own pet cats however are all neutered
moreResolved Question: Is it ok for vegetarians to still have pets?
Hi everyone :)
I have always loved animals nd I never really liked eating meat. I used to get into trouble for leaving all the meat on my plate so I decided to become a vegetarian. I know it's only been two weeks but you've got to start sometime so you can be one for a long time, right? :)
The problem is my dad told me that vegetarians don't believe in keeping animals as pets. I'm against everything that hurts animals - eating them, hunting them, testing products on them, farming them for their fur ect and always have been. However I don't really see what the problem is with keeping pets if you genuinely love them and care for them. I have 1 cat, 2 gerbils, 1 rabbit and 1 guinea pig. I had these animals at the time of becoming a vegetarian and I really love them and don't want to get r id of them. My cat isn't kept in a cage or anything, he's free to wander everywhere. He's allowed in and out when he wants and sometimes stays out all night and half of the day but he knows he can always come back to a warm loving home with beds for him to fall asleep on and feed and water that's always available. He can go in any room in the house and we spend loads of time with him every day.
I read a book where the vegetarian girl had a cat so is that allowed?
When it comes to my gerbils they have a massive 3 storey house with plenty of things for them to do. They have fresh food and water at all times. They're really tame so everyday I let them out of their house to run around my room for a few hours. They really enjoy being out :) (I block off any wires and the cat isn't allowed in my room at this time).
My rabbit and guinea pig get on really well. The live in a big enclosure outside with a big hutch they can go in and out of, bark to dig it, (safe) branches to chew, fresh food and water and I spend quite a bit of time with them too. They are allowed in my room for hours as well, again with the wires blocked off and the cat not there too. They also don't have a run, but are allowed to run freely around the garden (supervised) for about an hour or so.
I had all my animals before I became a vegetarian and I don't want to rehome them because of my decision.
I just wanted to know, do you, as vegetarians keep pets and if so what?
Do you think because of the way these animals are looked after it's ok to have them?
And also do you think as a vegetarian it's wrong for me to keep pets, even if I had them long before I became a vegetarian?
I'm only just starting out and don't know everything about it yet so please don't be hard on me...
Thanks :)
moreResolved Question: O'Ryan: As a former Democrat, can you show me where I "cheated" the system, or didn't want to work at all?
And expected others to pick up the slack for me?
Teenager growing up: Spent 4 years in a private school and participated in the Job Corp for each of those four years doing farm work, landscaping, gardening, and construction.
Age 18: First job as a dishwasher--walking three miles to work each and every day--in the rain or heavy Vermont snow.
Age 22-28: Worked a number of minimum-wage jobs, paid my bills, rent, and was self-sufficient.
Spent the last 6 years on disability due to health and psychological problems. Even then, I had a two-bedroom apartment, married, paid the bills, and was self-sufficient.
Downsized to a one-bedroom, but nothing's changed.
Today, I went downtown to take care of some errands (three doctor appointments for my INR, vascular scan and my eye pressure tests) and complete my eligibility review for my GA-X benefits and my wife's. (Passed on both fronts.)
Despite my physical health issues being a problem and my emotional issues, I still think of myself as being self-sufficient.
Even on disability (GA-X or SSI), I have never cheated the system--because I don't know *how*. Even when I worked my jobs, I never cheated the system then, or when I filed my income taxes. (I worry the most at that point: What if I put down the wrong number or enter an incorrect figure--or even fill out a part wrong? I don't want the IRS to think I'm cheating!)
But where along these lines would you say that I "cheated" the system or couldn't pull my own weight?
Or expected others to do the work for me?
You claim that Democrats are "notorious" cheaters and dead-beats--including myself.
I'd like to know why you believe this?
moreResolved Question: Is this a good beginning?
This is just the beginning of a book i'm writing, but it's not finished yet.
prolouge-Emerald eyes
On June seventeenth, at exactly the stroke of midnight, a baby girl weighing eight pounds and six ounces, with her feternal twin was born to Michael and America Mendler. Two proud parents, already mother and father to many.
Matthew, Maxamillion, Michael, Athena, Arena, Jerimiah and Josphia. The year was 1998 at Edwards Hospital in Naperville, Illinois.
Two nurses held uo the twins, side by side, both wrapped in pink. The other twin was asleep, but the other was wide awake. Ger eyes were wide with wonder, her eyes bright and clear, a smile on her gace. Her blanket couldn't restrain her tiny arms and skinny little hands.
A small whisp of blond hair was sticking up on her head. Her eyes lashes were black, despite her blond hair. Her skin was a bright shade of ivory, there was no color in her cheeks or the rest of her.
The nurses were baffled by the one twin's excited behavior and weir features but relieved by the other twin's normal behavior. One twin would drink formula, the abnormal twin would only drink fat free milk mixed with warm honey. One twin clung to both her parents, the other wanted only her dad.
One woke up every hour or so, the other slept through the night. One twins teeth were soft and milky colored, the others were strong and white, adult teeth. They weren't sharp or jagged, like a person might think they'd be. And this child, she was curious, bright, sweet and wild.
"What shall you name them?"A nurse asked, passing the demanding, abnormal twin to her father as another passed the normal, sweet little twin to her mother.
"I haven't got a clue."Michael said, rocking his baby girl slowly, trying to lull her to sleep, but it didn't work. Failed attempt number....ten? To lull her to sleep. The other twin, the normal twin, was fast asleep in her mothers arms.
The mother slowly rocked the baby in her arms, giving the abnormal twins name some thought. She came up with a name when she saw a flower through the window, by a pond.
It was a water lily. and it was beautiful.
"Lily Belle."America said out loud. The baby girl clapped her hands and squealed in her fathers arms. And then the mother sighed and to her normal baby, "Laurel Whyte."
Soon after, the twins were being passed from child to child in the Mendler family. Lily dazzled everyone. But they dazzled her, too. Being dazzled while dazzling. Everyone loved Lily but Lily loved everyone, too. She loved her father the most.
Soon after Lily and Laurel were born, at the age of one month, Lily and her family moved to Copenhogden, Denmark. The family lived there for four long years, until a tragedy struck the family. Michael dissapeared one day while fishing on the families boat in the ocean.
they moved after a year of searching for him. They set up searches in the near country, Sweden. Also in other countries like, Germany, Switzerland, France. The family soon gave up and America moved everyone to Kansas where they started a farm.
The other's didn't like to work, but Lily did. Working up from feeding chickens, to brushing and taking horses, to repainting fences and mailboxes and picking and planting in the garden.
When Lily reached the age of twelve, another tragedy struck her life. Her mother died in a car crash with her friends parents.
Flatt Quenn, Jeliah Mixx, Jazmin Young, Cedric Yorkk and his baby sister, Rukai Yorkk were also left parentless.
But let's begin this story on June seventeen, five thirty in the morning.
Was that a good beginning? leave answers to let me know!

moreResolved Question: I feel so depressed. What do I do?
I don't know what to do. I feel always upset and empty inside. I am 13, and I have 2 little brothers and 2 sisters, 1 of them older than me. I hate having a big family. I had a really happy time, when I hand-raised a budgie, and he made me so happy, but then he died, and I have kinda been upset since. My mum never seems to understand me, and dad just doesn't want to talk to me, it seems. I used to be able to talk to my big sis about my feelings, but she seems to be going through a stage of hating me, and she never wants to talk to me. Me and my best friend used to always text our problems to each other, but my phone isn't working at the moment. And with her, I would always try to comfort her when she was having problems with her parents or something, but she is one of those people who tries to make jokes and make light of other peoples problems. I never know what to do to make me happier. The main times when I am happy is when I'm playing guitar and singing, and I want to bad to be a singer, but I almost know its never going to happen. I live in the hills, but I hate where we live. I wouldn't care what kind of house I had as long as I had lots of property, but I don't. We moved here about 7 months ago, and it's a nice house, but I don't are about the house, I care about the land. I want a horse, and I need and place where I can just go by myself, run away from my problems, and away from my family and just have a break and just get away. But we have a little over 2 acres, and that isn't even in a paddock anything. It is just in garden, and lawn around the house. If it were up to me, I would move. But I can't. I'm 13. I just have so many things that I need, but that I don't have. I can feel my heart just full of things that I need but don't have, so I am constantly hurting. I don't know what to do. I don't have a very good relationship with my dad, and my relationship with my mum is drifting away, as with my sister. I don't know what to do. I need a friend, someone that will help me, but I don't have that friend. My bird died, and my parents gave my dog away. I still miss her, even though it was about 2 years ago. We are friends with the family and we have gone to their farm twice. They live on 54 acres, and I want to live there. When I went there, I just could get away from everything else, but I don't live there. I am a Christian, and if I didn't have God, I swear I would have nothing to live for, except my dream to be a singer. That is what gets me up every day. But thats it. I have noting else that makes me really happy. I want a horse, a way to get away from every thing, but we have money troubles, and thats never going to happen. Every time I try to tell my feeling to my mum, she gets mad at me, and thinks I am selfish and weird and stuff, and I just feel like I have no one to talk to, no where to go. Please help me.My grandparents in australia are not very good to talk to, and my other grandparents live in america.

Hi I dont know what to do, i bought a puppy, a siberian husky hes 4 weeks old and i have no problem leaving him at the breeders and picking him up when hes 6-8 weeks old but theres a tick problem at the breeders house, they went to a farm with the dogs and the mother of the puppies got filled with ticks in that farm, unfortunately she gave birth when they came back from the farm and she had ticks, those ticks reproduced and jumped on the puppies and im afraid if i leave him for 4 more weeks he'll get a disease via ticks since ticks are horrible little things, everytime i go to the breeders house I find 4 or more ticks on my puppy and his siblings, both female and male ticks, the breeder removes ticks daily and they have fumigated etc but still it appears as the ticks have reproduced and they have a garden so the ticks maybe live there and feed on the dogs, I dont know what to do im really worried about him staying with the ticks and want to take him home and to the vet but hes very young so I dont know what to do, couldnt I feed him puppy formula and teach him biting inhibition when he plays with me and bites too hard etc? im really worried about the ticks, what could i do? he has shark teeth already :P hes very big about the size of your forearm or bigger and 5 pounds or easily more, he runs and walks and the mother is already weaning them, he doesnt drink that often, HELP WHAT CAN I DO? can i take him home away from ticks? he eats solid food and drinks water already and is the biggest puppy in the litter aparently, anyone with knowledge and experience on dogs and the subject please give me some advice help :/
moreResolved Question: What's the difference between Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and other Latinos when they do the same thing?
They all park their cars on their lawns and demand that everyone speak Spanish and follow their inferior culture.
Also, all of them do gardening, farming, work in fast food restaurants, and produce anchor babies.
The only big difference is that they are each invading different geographical areas of America.
moreResolved Question: What should I major in to become a small-time farmer?
I want to go into farming but I don't have a background in it at all really. I would like to have a small, self-sustaining farm. Some livestock, maybe hay and a huge garden. Do I need to go to school for this or is this something that can be learned via on the job experience?
Also, if I should go to school should it be for agriculture, farm and ranch management or.....?
Thanks for your help! Thanks! I'm actually just finishing up my bs in Communication Studies with an emphasis in ethnic studies and human relations so I think that fits in nicely. Otherwise should I just offer up free work in exchange for experience?
moreVoting Question: villaige or city for a mixed race child?
I live in the city with my two children, my older one, aged 3 is mixed race. As his school where he attends nursery his class is very diverse. The two most friendliest girls are non identical twins who look different coloured. He has black, chineseand indian friends as well as white. I think this is brilliant for him.
We also live in a nice relatively safe little area on the outskirts of the city.
My partner whom is father to my younger boy whom is a baby, he lives in the country on a farm and it's lovely that the kids can safely run around here, there's even woodland at the end of the garden and there's a local school with a good reputation. He wants us all to live here.
One thing that I worry may be a problem though;
Everyone is white.
In my experience prodominantly white areas here in England can have some underlying tone of racism, whether they often say it outloud or not.
M partner thinks i'm being ridiculous.
But I don't want my older son to feel different.
Am I worrying for no reason?Just to clarify, Me, my partner, and my baby are white, my older son is mixed.
I worry for him after a bad experience when he was a baby and I lived further north where everyone was white and there was two occasions of local kids saying things such as 'have you been sleeping with a paki' and 'ugh paki' they said to him when he was just a toddler
moreResolved Question: What am I gonna do with all of these cucumbers?
My parents are away on vacation so I went to their place to feed the farm cats, water the garden and house plants, etc. The cucumbers are ready, and my goodness are there ever a lot of them! I left about 30 lbs of them in the a/c at my parents house for when they get home, and took about 8 lbs for myself.
What can we make with them? I've already thought of cucumber salad, tzatziki, tomato and cuke salad, I might try to make sushi, and I like them plain with vinegar and salt and pepper.
Do you know any other recipes where cucumber is a main ingredient? I've browsed around and see some recipes for cukes cooked in heavy cream, but I'm not sure what that texture would be like!My dad usually sets something up at the road for people to take for free (they live aside a busy highway).. it's not really my place to set all of that up when I'm not even there. So many great ideas, I'm going to have to put this one to a vote! Thanks for all of the great recipes. Nothing beats fresh, homegrown produce. Easy on the wallet and easy on the environment.

moreResolved Question: Are undocumented Americans really taking American jobs?
Under the hot Southern California sun immigrant workers are picking the foods consumed by millions of Americans and people around the world.
Propeller It's a back breaking job not everyone's fit to do.
Most of these immigrant workers arrived in the United States illegally, some as far as Central America.
And many are oblivious to the political firestorm centered around them.
“This is about lawful citizens versus illegal invaders,” said conservative radio host Tony Katz. “If you want to build a 50 foot fence, I’m in favor of the 50 foot fence.”
“There’s 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, those can be American jobs, those could be taxpaying jobs,” said Erik Spence, the founder of WeSupportArizona.com.
But some industries, especially California’s agriculture businesses, don’t want Americans working for them.
“Se solicitan trabajadores,” which translates to workers needed; this Spanish language sign is purposely aimed at immigrant workers – a foreign born workforce making sure these strawberries make it to your table.
There's no need for interviews or long applications.Undocumented immigrants simply show up at a field and they’re hired.
Many people, including former US President George W. Bush, admit immigrant workers do the jobs Americans refuse to do.At a farm in Oxnard, a city just north of Los Angeles, laborers aren't convinced the average American could step in their shoes – not even for a day.
“It’s too hard right now for a white person it’s too hard,” said Ricardo Romero.
“No e visto a ninguno aqui trabajando en el fil. (I haven’t seen any Americans here, working in the field),” said Sergio Guerrero.
Sergio Guerrero came into this country illegally through the Southern California desert. He makes a $1.90 for every box of strawberries he fills.
And now in an effort to employ out-of-work Americans and obviously to prove a point, the United Farm Workers Union is inviting American citizens to take the jobs of these farm workers.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if after a day or two, they may find themselves appreciating the people who are taking their jobs,” said Roman Pinal, a United Farm Workers Organizer.
When asked whether or not they would take a farm working jobs, many at the unemployment office said no.
“No because I don’t even do gardening at my own house,” said Wendy Mendoza, an unemployed American.

moreResolved Question: Where can young people learn about farming?
My husband and I (and our baby girl) are in the market for a house with some land.
The thing is that we have never farmed, with the exception of a moderate sized garden. We're vegetarians(still eat eggs and cheese though!) and aren't interested in raising animals for meat, but we'd love to have sheep and shear them for wool, some chickens for eggs. When I was really young we had horses. My family that has any history with farming is long gone now. We live in northern Ontario and really want to establish a small holding hobby farm and grow our own food and have some animals. Where do you learn how to take care of these animals? I would really love some kind of mentorship where we can be shown the right way, but I have no idea where to go. There is only so much you can learn from a book. Thanks for any advice.

Let me start with this. I've been going through spiritual changes over the Past fives years.
Recently I had an awakening (I believe this would be my Fifth Awakening. The first I had when i was three. (I was able to read animals and speak to them. I even when I touched people or they brushed against me could read them like a book. My mother and family called me The lil physic of the family.
My Second one came three years later I was about Six years of age and My ability came more inhanse I begin to read peoples minds Sometimes I couldn't go into a crowded place without Reading someone thoughts and to a six year old that can be very scary. I even begin to have dreams of the future I would tell my mom Such as I told At one point where Her car was going to break down near a farm and That a man wearing a yellow shirt would help her. He would become her boyfriend. She just said okay..And three months later it happened. At this time I was kinder garden and I remember telling my teacher How she was going to get into a car crash and die. She was a bit shocked i would say that and I know for a fact she called my mother and my mom told me I should be careful what I say to people. However A year later She did get into a car crash and she did die. After a while people kept asking me for readings and things, (I never ones gained money from them and I gave readings for free. Until my mother put it to a end.) It would be Four more years until I had an another awakening. I was 10 at the time and This awakening allowed me to understand what I was and whom I was. At this time I got to meet my spirit guardian. He would guide me through things and aid me in life.
My last two One I wouldn't have until I was 18 And the other Right after my son was born.
Each awakening I gained a ability. There not over-the top. No time travel no shape-shifting.
Now I am 26 and I believe at this moment I am having another awakening. My enegry shifts I get head-acks And I am always tired (These things happened to me each time I went through an spiritual change.) Sometimes I will fall asleep and find myself in the astro relm like someone pulled me there. I have met my flame twin there and He keeps pulling me to this place. The pull is so strong and powerful it is hard to explain. However I Don't know if he knows its me When I am on this realm (The Blind world.) Because I look deffrient in the astro realm. I believe our souls our much deffrient than that what our shells (Bodies look like.) How realistic is it for someone to create a volunteer run group with the intent of growing produce (veggies & fruits) and donating it to soup kitchens and shelters for the homeless? And they were doing it to help people out, not for profiting.
Friends and I are wanting to create our own volunteer run group with such an intent, but we're trying to see things realistically. We have jobs that pay well so getting seeds won't be so difficult. Plus a friend of mine lives on a farm with good soil. We're looking into perma-culture as our gardening tactic. So how realistic is all this? Any suggestions also?

How do you make up for it? or do you?
In those days, there was a kind of fever that pushed me out of the front door, into the pale, exhaust-fumed park by Broadwater Farm or the grubby road that eventually leads to Enfield: turkish supermarket after chicken restaurant after spare car part shop. Everything in my life felt like it was coming to a mysterious close: I could hardly walk to the end of a street without feeling there was no way to go except back. The dates I’d had that summer had come to nothing, my job was a dead end and the rent cheque was killing me a little more each month. It seemed unlikely that anything could hold much longer. The only question left to ask was what would happen after everything familiar collapsed, but for now the summer stretched between me and that moment.
It was ferociously hot, and the air quality became so bad that by the evening the noise of nearby trains stuttered in in fits and starts, distorted through the shifting air. As I lay in the cool of my room, I could hear my neighbours discussing the world cup and opening beers in their gardens. On the other side, someone was singing an Arabic prayer through the thin wall. I had no money for the pub so I decided to go for a walk.
I found myself wandering aimlessly to the west, past the terrace of chip and kebab shops and laundrettes near the tube station. I crossed the street, and headed into virgin territory - I had never been this way before. Gravel-dashed houses alternated with square 60s offices, and the wide pavements undulated with cracks and litter. I walked and walked, because there was nothing else for me to do, and by degrees the light began to fade.
The mouth of an avenue led me to the verge of a long, greasy A-road that rose up in the far distance, with symmetrical terraces falling steeply down then up again from a distant railway station. There were four benches to my right, interspersed with those strange bushes that grow in the area, whose blossoms are so pale yellow they seem translucent, almost spectral; and suddenly tired, I sat down. I held my head in my hands, feeling like s**t, but a sudden breeze escaped from the terraces and for a moment I lost my thoughts in its unexpected coolness. I looked up and I realised I was sitting in a photograph.
I remembered clearly: this photograph was taken by my mother in 1982, outside our front garden in Hampshire. It was slightly underexposed. I was still sitting on the bench, but the colours and the planes of the road and horizon had become the photo. If I looked hard, I could see the lines of the window ledge in the original photograph were now composed by a tree branch and the silhouetted edge of a grass verge. The sheen of the flash on the window was replicated by bonfire smoke drifting infinitesimally slowly from behind a fence. My sister’s face had been dimly visible behind the window, and -yes- there were pale stars far off to the west that traced out the lines of a toddler’s eyes and mouth.
When I look back at this there’s nothing to grasp, no starting point. I was inside an underexposed photo from 1982 but I was also sitting on a bench in Haringey.
Strongest of all was the feeling of 1982-ness: dizzy, illogical, as if none of the intervening disasters and wrong turns had happened yet. I felt guilty, and inconsolably sad. I felt the instinctive tug back - to school, the memory of shopping malls, cooking, driving in my mother’s car. All gone, gone forever.
I just sat there for a while. I was so tired that I didn’t bother trying to work out what was going on. I was happy just to sit in the photo while it lasted, which wasn’t for long anyway: the light faded, the wind caught the smoke, the stars dimmed under the glare of the streetlamps. I got up and walked away from the squat little benches and an oncoming gang of kids.
A bus was rumbling to my rescue down the hill, with a great big ‘via Alexandra Palace’ on its front, and I realised I did want a drink after all.@Happy Hiram: I didn't read your answer either.

moreResolved Question: Couples Costume: Dirty Female Cop & Hardened Criminal: Funny or Overdone?
We are defending winners of last year's couples costume contest and we REALLY want to win again. Last year we were a "Garden Ho and a Ho-sale Farmer (Farm/Pimp)" Get it? It was hilarious. The cop/prisoner thing is overdone, but I thought with an angle, it could be funny. He would wear a convict outfit fitted with a stiffy for the entire night and dress like the prison player. I would wear a sexy cop outfit and I even thought about using like the fur lined handcuffs, etc.
Any suggestions you can give to make our costume better would also be greatly appreciated!
moreResolved Question: Where can I learn about gardening *in* an apartment?
For people that live in big cities may want to grow their own fresh food, I've seen pictures of clear plant pots that fit vertically in windows and other ideas. I've also heard about people that have started sustainable farms in old factory space.
Which are good websites to read for this?
moreResolved Question: How do I start a rescue for rabbits?
Healthy rabbits that would be put to sleep as they have no one to care for them.
This is my plan. Give the rabbits a happy home with a garden to run in. Keep the sex's apart so no breeding.
When they die a natural death eat them.
If one falls sick kill it before it can affect the others and to avoid vet bills. The rabbit can also be eaten.
Before you say I am unkind remember the rabbits would have been killed anyway before I took them and gave them a happy life.
By eating them I am not eating other meat that was raised in a factory farm. My meals would be free range.None of the answers so far seem to understand the rabbit would have been killed anyway with no home for them. I plan to give them a happy life. Maybe farmers should not kill their animals as well acording to you.
moreVoting Question: SAHM'S (and other moms) to toddlers; do you always take your toddler out everyday?
Now that it's summer, i work as a sub, i'm pretty much off (though I am looking for a new job) so I have more time and energy on my hands to take my almost2 y/o daughter places. we go somewhere practically everyday. I live in the San Francisco bay area, and I don't know if you're familiar with it, but there's plenty out here to do and see and lots of great things for kids are practically right next door to me. today it was Fairyland, this min-theme park with a story book theme, yesterday it was the beach and park there, and the day before it was this regional park with a little farm for kids to feed the goats cows etc. I am probably just gonna lay low tomorrow and go to the park then song time at the library.
Some ppl I know are like me; they like to stimulate their child by going out. I love going places w/my daughter, and she loves it too. she seems happy home too but we both get kind of restless. we live in a small apartment with only a garden to run around in and though she doesn't get that bored w/it, I do. I have always liked to be out and about; that didn't change when i became a mother. Only what did change was WHERE I go and WHAT I do. Now i go to mostly kid-friendly places.
But a couple of prominent ppl in my daughter's life---my SO and his mom---both agree I take her out "too much". They aren't attacking me about it or anything, but they think it is almost overkill and overstimulating. they don't understand why i cant just stay home with her all day a couple of days ago and do activities at home. I admit I could find fun things for her to do around here, like water the plants, etc but those activities can only be fun for so long.
In your opinion, is it just a matter of parenting style and what works for me? Or do you think it sounds I do take her out too much?so far, very good answers, and both offer a different po.o.v. Shining thanks i never even thought of it tat way...and gosh, i really didn't think about the future impact and how she will expect it all the time!mom of ethan and sophie: lol, thanks for saying it's "fancy" but actually, the majority of the stuff I do are free (parks, min-farm, etc.).

Since being human means being above and beyond the animals most consider 'lesser'?
Isn't being vegan more humane than eating meat, thus being more of a human?
isn't it more advanced to just eat plant material? I can't imagine an alien having a factory farm on board its ship, but maybe a huge garden, yeah.

I need a mixed diet with some meat to stay healthy. If I raise my own rabbits to eat they will have a good life with a garden to run in and be happy before I kill them.
If I did not do this I would be eating meat raised in a factory farm. Consider for example the chicken you ate. Did it have a good life before?

moreResolved Question: Assign letters to each allele – be certain to label what each letter represents.?
You are visiting a cranberry farm, and you notice that there are 2 types of cranberry plants. One type is a true-breeding TALL plant with dark RED fruit. The other plant is a true-breeding SHORT plant with WHITE fruit. You tell the farmer that you would like to grow cranberries in your garden, so she gives you 1 of each plant. You decide to run an experiment on the plants. You cross the tall, red plant with the short, white plant and get all tall, red offspring. You then decide to cross two of the tall, red offspring with each other.
moreResolved Question: Farming Business Question?
Okay here is the deal, I myself have never grow or planted anything but recently I moved into a new house (on property i own) with about 12,000 sq ft of cleared land that I intend to use for gardening. I have a friend who knows everything about gardening and even has his own 1 acre garden that he uses to pay his bills with, he said that the guy he is leasing the land from is selling it and wanted to know if I was interested in starting a garden on my property as partners. Now is where my question comes into play...how much percentage do i agree on? its my property and my water we will be using but he has all the knowledge and connections to grow and sell the product. I was thinking we split the profits garden 50/50 and he help pay for the water bill and property tax used for that piece of land we grow on? others have told me I should take more strictly because I own the land, I dont want to be greedy so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i visited a friend the other day and she has a very natural garden, she has only native wild flowers and designed it herself as an eden for butterflys bees and birds. as i walked up her path i noticed a few little black and yellow bodies and i wondered why they are dying? she says she has found MANY in the past few weeks and suspects it could either be a drop in temperature, or pesticides on the crops, we live in the countryside so there are a few farms around, but for the past two weeks we have had beautiful weather, and the farms have been quite quiet.
what could be happening to the poor bumbles?
moreResolved Question: Help--can't decide between 2 reception venues!?
Background: We're relatively recent university grads, with a lot of debt and not a lot of fantastic job prospets at the moment. We've found 2 venues in our budget range, although one is a lot more $$ than the other.
Venue 1: historical village 30-40 minutes from our city. $1300 for an outdoor ceremony site, photo tour, admission for all our guests, and hall (which is a 1930s red barn converted into a hall). Hall has fantastic windows with a LOT of natural light, and has wall sconces if we don't want to use their flourescent overheads at night. Their catering is under our budget, but we still have to do a tasting. We have our rental all day. It has treed areas, a lake, farm sites, sweet old buildings, interpretive actors for the nerdy history buffs in us...the site reflects FI (and some of mine) ethnic heritage. It's great.
Potential cons: Nearest hotels are 20 minutes away. Not sure what to do about getting guests to and from the site in an efficient, hassle-free and CHEAP manner, considering there will be alcohol.
Venue 2: our neighbourhood community hall. Big red brick building, hardwood floors, lots of room, good ammenities. We love our neighbourhood; it has a lot of character, historic buildings, shops, and fantastic photo ops (and our photographer is known for taking good photos in that kind of setting). Only $400 for the hall (all-day rental). Close to our apartment, friends' places, lots of hotels, taxis for the drunks, etc.
Potential cons: No idea where to have our ceremony (we're not religious). Have exhausted all potential city park sites (pretty much all the sites that allow us to bring chairs--a must--are kind of gross). I was really set on having the ceremony and reception in the same location, or at least very close together. Really want the opportunity for an outdoor ceremony. Area immediately around hall is kinda "meh" (playground, ball diamond, sometimes homeless people/drunks because it's a central, pedestrian-oriented area). Interior of hall is also kinda "meh" (definitely looks like a community hall, if you know what I mean. Functional, but not a lot of natural lighting, and it looks pretty 70s/80s in contrast to the brick exterior).
So yes, there's a $900 difference (but venue 2 does NOT include a nice ceremony site, so $400 is not the final cost). Some ceremony sites we looked into are more than the entire cost of venue 1. A garden we found charges $1700 (!!), and a lovely little theatre at our university charges $1500. It's very important for our ceremony to be lovely, but it's also important to go gentle on our budget. We don't have friends or family with a nice yard or that kind of thing.
We should be booking something relatively soon (it's for summer 2011). Please help--input appreciated!
moreResolved Question: How much should i be paid for landscape work?
I have been working as a general honeydoer and landscaper for the last few monthes. However most of my independent work has been as either a farm hand or general lawn mowing and trimming. I have recently been SUB contracted by a guy who does similar work to help him with his properties. However, he has no idea that I do this kind of thing on my own. I figured I could learn a thing or two from this guy who has been doing this stuff for a while. He has me stop by properties of his and maintain them FOR HIM. It's starting to look like im doing all the work and getting paid only hourly and get this...after the first visit when I get most of the work done he has me stop by once a week for only an hour to pull growing weeds and maintain the lawn. It seemed like an ok deal at first until i started to wonder how much he must be getting paid by these people to take care of their properties. How much do people usually pay for someone to maintain a property? I dont mean a lawn mow every once in a while, I mean like mulching and lawn overhall as well. He must be getting paid enough that he's making a solid profit after giving me my little cut. How much would you pay for someone to till a garden, pull alot of weeds, plant a few small plants, sweep around the property and trim the hedges?

moreResolved Question: Read my English speech? Thaaaaaanks ;D?
'The greatest power of a poet is that they force us to see the world anew” In this speech I am going to discuss the validity of this quote. What does it mean? And what examples are there in poetry? Many poems, although not all, open our eyes to things we once were oblivious to. Whether it's how important such a mundane and everyday object is, or the amount of idiosyncrasies each person has. Some things become so normal, so 'everyday' that we forget to think about them. Do you think about walking to school, or do you just do it? Poems such as 'The Red Wheelbarrow' by William Carlos Williams bring to our attention how we overlook such things. Poems can also give us another person’s perspective, how they feel, and their opinions. This 'forces us to see the world anew' as we see it through another's eyes. And as before reading the poem, we may not have thought about the topic at all.
'so much depends upon, a red wheelbarrow, glazed with rain
water, beside the white chickens'
This poem, which is no more than fifteen words, was written in 1923 by doctor William Carlos Williams. The poem shows us just how many every day items are of great importance to us. As wheelbarrows in the 1920's were the main tool of gardening, without one, farming would be almost impossible. The first line 'so much depends upon' builds up suspense, as we are eager to see what the poem is about, and what the important object the poet is going to write about is. As the poem is just a realist depiction of a common item, the aesthetic word 'glazed' has been questioned and pondered by many. I think the poet described the wheelbarrows appearance to remind us also of how simple things, such as the shine of a red wheelbarrow, can be visibly appealing. The whole point of the poem, I think, is to show how even 'boring' and simple objects can be immensely important and and beautiful.
The poem ‘2 flies’ by Charles Bukowski depicts the scene of a man reading a newspaper, while being incredibly annoyed by two pestering flies. Throughout the poem we see many cases of Anthropomorphism, the poet assigns human characteristics to non human things, like the flies depicted in this poem. He describes the flies as 'angry' and taunting, as if the flies were mad at him for their lot in life, and were pestering him purposely. Although annoying, the man does realise and express the fact that his situation is nothing compared to others, with the lines 'other men suffer dictates of empire, tragic love... I suffer, insects..'. This brings to our attention that the man is most likely solitary and indifferent to 'bigger problems' but more focused on the immediate, small problems we face daily. Sometimes a small issue is enough to make us 'suffer'.
After losing his temper, the man strikes at the flies, smashing one against his newspaper and leaving the other afraid of approaching him again. With the flies guts mashed against his newspaper the poet reflects 'something has happened, something has soiled my day' showing just how much this altercation has effected his mood. Again, such an everyday situation or thing is shown to us in a way that forces us to look at it differently, if this were to happen to us, would we react the same way? Would our mood be slightly altered by the event? Although slightly exaggerated in this poem, many little things can affect our mood and outlook on life, such as being annoyed by two flies.
Constantly risking absurdity written by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, however, is not about a single object or action. The poem is designed to express the poets fear of failing, or looking absurd to his readers, he does this by using an extended simile, comparing poetry to acrobatics. The extended simile between acrobatics and poetry starts with the line 'above the heads of audience, the poet like an acrobat.', showing us how the poet is afraid of falling while his readers look up and judge his writing. 'For he's the super realist, who must perforce perceive taut truth' tells us how the poet is trying his hardest to make his poems seem 'real' and believable without looking ridiculous. When describing the acrobats ascent to a higher platform, he writes ''toward that still higher perch, where Beauty stands and waits', as Beauty is capitalised, we get an idea that the poet sees beauty not as an idea, but an obtainable object, high above his reach. Reading this poem, and understanding the simile used, the reader can begin to understand the poets view on writing. The risks involved, how he may fail, and look foolish. Or how he may succeed.
All these poems show us either another persons view or opinion, or bring to light our own ignorance to our surroundings and situations. Thank you for listening.

moreResolved Question: Biblical question about adam and eve? i can't find a way they can exist.?
if you don't want to read the whole thing, skip to my final point and then comment.
um, Adam and Eve (from what i hear) were the first two humans on the planet or something, right? well... why does no one seem to have any problems with the fact that regardless of any factors or luck or even divine intervention, they would have died out relatively quickly.
my first (and weakest) point is that they were used to the garden of eden, and that (compare it to captive animals in zoo's)would have handicapped them, and they would have been unable to survive.
my second (slightly stronger) point, is that any animals out there, (lions and tigers and bears oh my!) would have quickly and efficiently killed them off. the would have gone and tried to talk to a vicious wild animal, figuring it would talk back, or be friends with them, then they get eaten.
my final (and strongest) point, is that they would need to have children to populate the planet. then their children would be the only people on the planet. then they have to perform a lot of incest to get more people. incest causes mental retardation and physical handicaps, don't it? eventually, those children of children of children would get to the point where they are unable to gather food, farm, build, or hunt. the human race, if extremely lucky, or backed by god, would have lasted somewhere between 3 and 5 generations (at the very most.)
please answer, religious peoples. don't you other religious people post saying 'that's why i don't believe in chrisianity' or whatever, cause all of your religious text have just as much, if not more flaws."that's why we have all the retarded humans that is the world today."? do you realize that i just told you that not a single human born after the 5 generation should have been not mentally retarded? they wouldn't have been able to eat, let alone consummate. and if they did (for millions of years), then each and every one of us would be considered, like 950X lower than braindead? and by handi-capped, i mean they were used to having food handed to them. they didn't have to hunt, farm, or build anything. with out knowing those skills, it makes it very difficult, at whatever adult age they got kicked out at, to fend for themselves.thundercat guy, i don't really get offended about the incest, but the retaded grand children that wouldn't have been able to survive.

moreResolved Question: Advice for a city girl that wants to become a farm girl?
I have lived in the city all of my life, but my dream is to one day own a farm. I'm an avid spinner and a knitter, and I would love owning my own sheep and other fiber animals. I would also like to have a vegetable garden and grow my own food. I have always been interested in traditional living (making my own clothes and growing my own food and things like that) and I think I would enjoy country life. My boyfriend grew up in the country (basically on a dirt farm) and doesn't think I could handle it. I have had a strong phobia of bugs all of my life, and I'm not sure I could handle the amount of bugs that are out in the country. I would also miss living near friends and family and all of the conveniences the city has to offer.
I have never heard of any classes or books about starting your own farm. Are there any resources out there for people who have never done this before? If anyone out there has done this, do you have any advice to offer me? For people out there that live on farms already, does it sound like someone like me could transition to life on a farm?
Thanks in advance!Just wanted to add that I wouldn't want to try and make profit off of the farm. I know that would be difficult, and that's not really want I want to do. I just want to have a small hobby farm. I will earn money doing freelance work online, just like I would do in the city.
moreResolved Question: I don't want to euthanize my 10 YO Boxer but............any other options??
We have had our 10 yo Boxer named bud for five years. I re homed him and his wife of 5 years together but unfortunately kylie, his wife was killed by a car after some children let her out of my garden. Since that day Bud has never left our side, he follows us even to the toilet, he is the most perfect dog anyone could wish for. He is placid, almost talks to us and his facial expressions tell us exactly what he wants. We love him and he is a massive part of our life.
Just under Three years ago my first Grandchild was born, Bud was fantastic from the word go and as we gained trust, it was soon apparent that bud tolerated anything off caeden.......from being crawled over, ears pulled, stood on etc etc. Bud used to just get up and move away when he wasn't in the mood, which was rarely, he just lay and sort of knew it was Lil C and never bat an eyelid....no moans, growls or anything.
On Friday last, Caeden my grandson slightly caught his back thigh with his foot, my daughter was sat on the sofa in between them both. Bud swung around, in the most aggressive manner and bit his face, my daughter pushed her son to the floor or he fell back and she at the same time pushed bud back with her other hand. We were all stunned and can't take this in. Caeden now has four teeth marks below his jaw and four above, with bruises and cuts. The lower grazes are 1/2 inch away from his Jugular vein.......you know what I'm thinking, if he hdn't have fallen or a wall was behind him, I fear bud would have possibly sunk his teeth into him.
Now, he has never, ever, done anything remotely like this in his life. However, my family are my life, he is ten years old and I feel (maybe to justify things) that Bud has just gotten so old, he has bad arthritis and isn't in the best of health (but no where near ready to be put to sleep because of poor health). I feel though that he has maybe had enough and just wants to be left alone.
I can't risk this ever happening again, we take him shopping with us often, probably three times a week and briefly leave him by the shop tied to a post for maybe five or ten Min's. people often love him, they know him, and stroke him etc.......children too. He may never ever do this again, but I can't CHANCE that he might never do it again.
We feel upset with Bud and betrayed all the love he gets, that he has done this and we feel he has let us down badly......however, we don't want to have him euthanized. Re-homing him to somewhere like a farm or smallholding (if I was lucky enough to find one and then an owner to take on a dog with not long left anyway) but the re homing would be impossible because he would fret like hell and it would probably kill him anyway because he doesn't eat even if we go away for a couple of days, he adores us too. I've spoken with two vets who have both said he must be allowed to leave the world now as he has had a good life. We have had a weekend of sheer hell, I haven't slept a wink and feel sick in my stomach.....he is our best pal.
I have decided to take him today, but I don't physically feel I can do this. If there was another option, I grab it......but what can I do??????
I know what you peeps are going to say I think.....but I'm clutching at at straws now.......for a miracle. To muzzle him is not an option, he is the old breed Boxer with a very pushed in snout making breathing difficult at the best of time and in summer, the vet felt this would be cruel!!
So sorry for the long question.
Thanks for reading,
Mark, Darren......and Bud

So.. if things are all A-OK, then at least we learned a great new skill. And we have converted most of our savings to gold coins and silver coins.
However.... do you think it will really get that bad? When I read info from Peter Schiff, Gerald Celente, Ron Paul, Jim Rogers, Judge Andrew Napolitano , Chris Martenson (to name a few), the entire economy is unsustainable. It's a matter of when.. not if.. it will collapse. What do you think?

moreResolved Question: What is the easiest way to reclaim a garden?
The farm I bought use to have a nice big garden, now it hasn't been planted for about five years and is covered with grass, and right now dandelions. What is the easiest way to reclaim it? Maybe it is even too late in the year. We have had so much rain here, in south central Saskatchewan, farmers are not sure they are going to get their crops seeded in.I am not sure that I can "just turn the soil" I only have a small rototiller and I am not sure that it will go throught all the sod. I can give it a try though. I just thought there might be some simpler way.... : )Oh, it was a vegetable garden.
moreResolved Question: can you tell me about having a farm?
as a little girl i loved farms and farm animals and gardens and outdoors. thats why im trying to find a career that will let me own a farm.
i would love to own about 4 goats, 4 sheep, 2 pigs, rabbits, a dog, a cat, and thats it. i want to live in eastern washington, around spokane, and ive found homes that are pretty cheap with great land
for instance, this

or this
http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/1010-E-Pandora_Rosalia_WA_99170_1116041378
really cheap, perfect area, away from the city
away from everyone. I LOVE IT.
so im bassically asking, what other costs must i be worried about?
how much does it cost to keep the animals i want? i own rabbits, i know how expensive they are.
and i dont want you to say
well you have to keep vets in mind, cuz thats not what im asking at all. thats an emergency fund.
im saying, how much am i 100% going to have to pay?
and what jobs will go well with owning a farm?
i wont make any money off my animals. i just want them cuz i love animals so much. i want to make a perfect small farm.
im thinking about being a graphic designer, wear i could work at home and have my own small personal buisness. what do you all think?
thanks :D
