Resolved Question: i know this is crazy but could u summarize this?

The extent to which forests have become Earth's grazing lands is much more difficult to assess. Cattle or sheep pastures in North America or Europe are easy to identify, and they support large numbers of animals. At least 2 million square km of such forests have been cleared for grazing lands. Less certain are the 5 to 9 million square km (1.9 to 3.5 million square miles) of humid tropical forests and some drier tropical woodlands that have been cleared for grazing. These often support only very low numbers of cattle, but they may still be considered grazing lands by national authorities. Almost half the world is made up of “drylands”—areas too dry to support large numbers of trees—and most are considered grazing lands. There, goats, sheep, and cattle may harm what few trees are able to grow. Although most of the areas cleared for crops and grazing represent permanent and continuing deforestation, deforestation can be transient. About half of eastern North America lay deforested in the 1870s, almost all of it having been deforested at least once since European colonization in the early 1600s. Since the 1870s the region's forest cover has increased, though most of the trees are relatively young. Few places exist in eastern North America that retain stands of uncut old-growth forests. In addition, while some forests are being cleared, some are being planted. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that there are approximately 1.3 million square km (500,000 square miles) of such plantations on Earth. These are often of eucalyptus or fast-growing pines—and almost always of species that are not native to the places where they are planted. Elsewhere, forests are shrinking. The FAO estimates that the annual rate of deforestation is about 1.3 million square km per decade. About half of that is primary forest—forest that has not been cut previously (or at least recently). The greatest deforestation is occurring in the tropics, where a wide variety of forests exists. They range from rainforests that are hot and wet year-round to forests that are merely humid and moist, to those in which trees in varying proportions lose their leaves in the dry season, and to dry open woodlands. Because boundaries between these categories are inevitably arbitrary, estimates differ in how much deforestation has occurred in the tropics. Dry forests in general are easier to deforest and occupy than moist forests and so are particularly targeted by human actions. Worldwide, humid forests once covered an area of about 18 million square km (7 million square miles). Of this, about 10 million square km (3.9 million square miles) remained in the early 21st century. Given the current annual rates of deforestation, most of these forests will be cleared within the century. Indeed, in some places, such as West Africa and the coastal humid forests of Brazil, very little forest remains today. The human activities that contribute to tropical deforestation include commercial logging and land clearing for cattle ranches and plantations of rubber trees, oil palms, and other economically valuable trees. Another major contributor is the practice of slash-and-burn agriculture, or swidden agriculture (see also shifting agriculture). Small-scale farmers clear forests by burning them and then grow their crops in the soils fertilized by the ashes. Typically, the land produces for only a few years and then must be abandoned and new patches of forest burned. The Amazon Rainforest is the largest remaining block of humid tropical forest, and about two-thirds of it is in Brazil. (The rest lies along that country's borders to the west and to the north.) Detailed studies of Amazon deforestation from 1988 to 2005 show that the rate of forest clearing has varied from a low of about 11,000 square km (4,200 square miles) per year in 1991 to a high of about 30,000 square km (11,600 square miles) per year in 1995. The high figure immediately followed an El Niño, a repeatedly occurring global weather anomaly that causes the Amazon basin to receive relatively little rain and so makes its forests unusually susceptible to fires. Studies in the Amazon also reveal that 10,000–15,000 square km (3,900–5,800 square miles) are partially logged each year, a rate roughly equal to the low end of the forest clearing estimates cited above. In addition, each year fires burn an area about half as large as the areas that are cleared. Even when the forest is not entirely cleared, what remains is often a patchwork of forests and fields or, in the event of more intensive deforestation, "islands" of forest surrounded by a "sea" of deforested areas. The effects of forest clearing, selective logging, and fires interact. Selective logging increases the flammability of the forest because it converts a closed, wetter forest into a more open, drier one. This leaves the forest vulnerable to the accidental movement of fires from cleared adjacent agricultur more

Resolved Question: i've been dreaming to work with wild animals in africa for my whole life, but i dont know which job i can do?

it's like a life-long time dream for me to go to africa one day, stay on those wild grassland with cheetahs/lions and everything living on it. maybe i'll get to raise up one little creature of them and become close to each other...there's never a moment in my life that i wish something to happen so strong and i know i would love to dedicate my whole life to it. but there's a setback, i'm not sure which job i wanna do there. i wanna protect the wild animals and let them be free, cause they belong to the nature. meanwhile if i could, i wanna stay in the field outside with them whole day. just you know, like be a member of them.. zoologist? well i gotta say that i suck at the subjects that require brain work. on the other hand, i'm a pretty sensitive/sentimental person. i get attached with animals so much, like i really wanna get to know them, feel them running around me u know? just a note: i dont really wanna work at zoos, cause i feel pity for the animals who have lost what was supposed to belong to them in their life.yo elaine why u even bother answerin this question anyway huh? you think i know nothing about what a real world is out there? i say why dont you stop judgin' others and maybe be a little nicer to ppl. yeah my image IS indeed good to me, plus does degrading other ppl's dream make you happy or wut. dumbby raising one of wild animals i meant for those who lost their parents, like if a mother cheetah has died and left his babies, either they'll be killed by a male lion or hyena once he saw them. but i'm not saying that i definitely will get the chance, just hopefully im lucky to be allowed to, just to help him grow up then let him survive in the nature. besides i read news that some guys who have their own stories with big cats or wolves, they study the animals' habbit and everything, then developed this skill or wutever u call it that they could face the animals straight in the face and walk among them like a membr of the family, instead of just stay far away and watch. but here again i'm sayin' for some of 'em they got the gift of connection with wildlif and this is what i wanna try in my life. anyway thanks all for the useful info, i'll keep lookin'. more

Open Question: Should I kill myself?

Where do I start...I am depressed..quite depressed....I have no social life what so ever at all. I have no friends, and I have never had a girl friend. I have lived in the U.S.A for the past four years. I am an immigrant from Africa. I am a full time student at one of the larger Universities in Virginia. What I know is I am quite depressed and have seen a counsellor and been taking anti-depressant. But, I haven't seen any change. In my opinion, I doubt if this psychology crap works nor do I think the medicine works. If I will ever get better, I should take a responsibility of my life and change it my self. But, I don't know how. I feel really lonely but at the same time will try my best to stay away from people. I think Americans are racist people and look down on me, but I have never met one who is like that. But, for some reason I believe that, may be I have been watching too much CNN. If one of you try to approach me at school, I will probably be nice, but I will be self conscious and I won't open my self to you. But, at the same time, I am really lonely How do I spend most of my spare time, by watching porn. I am addicted, I guess. I have also seen escorts(prostitutes) few times taking money from my student loan. How pathetic is that? I feel like subhuman. I feel like dehumanized. The animal spirit in me is dead. I am no social animal. Do you think I would ever get better? Do you think I would ever have a girl friend? Or do you thinkI should stop my misery and kill my self? Have you ever felt the way I do? more

Open Question: Why does nobody kills these bastards who murder whales and dolphins?

If you're a poacher in Africa and kill elephants, rhinos, orangutans and some other species, your chances of getting shot and killed by the rangers are pretty good. Why don't we start butchering crews of whaling boats or simply sink them and take care NOBODY on board survives? Oh, what? Now I AM the monster? It's okay to shoot poor black people who know nothing but educated people like some JAPANESE who are knowingly killing internationally protected animals in international protected waters are off limits??? An afterthought: Would it not make sense to take some of the troops who kill "Taliban's" (have you EVER seen one with your own eyes?) and protect something that's worth it?WESTBROM, and all the others who don't allow emails, you are cowards! You think only Your opinion is the right one? And me an idiot? Maybe, but one with a real live. I don't hide all day behind my computer. I'm in Cambodia and fight for animals and poor peoples rights. And hey, we ARE hunting and shooting people a long time already. AND if the people who get shot are not in any way productive enough for 1st world countries, we do NOTHING! Dafur, south Thailand, Cambodia.... (that's only the places I have been to see it with my own eyes, not on the net or TV...) What do you think the Taliban would do if they where a superpower and the Americans a third world country? Well, that might be a totally new question...To the answer from FoxStrid...: Now we start talking! I was actually not asking private people to go to Japan and kill fisherman. The illegal killing occurs frequently in Australian waters. Australia has banned and condemned whaling for many years. How comes, Australia does not send war ships to their protected waters, ask the whalers polity to leave or blow them out of the water? Might it be possible that is so because Japan is Australia's biggest trading partner? Could one say now that the Australian government acts criminal by NOT enforcing its own laws? Indonesian shark fishers are hunted down every day by Australian officials. Their boats will be confiscated and destroyed, the captain jailed if he or the boats owner cannot pay a fine and the crew sent back to Indonesia. Why does that not happen with whalers? Is the Australian government to blame for not acting? more

Open Question: Got time to help a guy out with commas?

Hey guys I'm having problems with commas, so I figured once I can finalize the answers on these example problems I can sort of see the right angle of how to use these properly. Thanks! Add the correct comma needs: 1. The penguins that live in an area of South Africa near the coast are an endangered species. 2.One breeding ground for these penguins Dassen Island is northwest of Cape Town. 3. Today fewer than sixty thousand penguins can be found breeding on this island. 4. At one time seabirds that stole the penguins’ eggs were the only threat to the funny-looking birds. 5.These days human egg collectors not to mention animals that simply take the eggs are constantly reducing the penguin population. 6. However the worst threat to the penguins is oil pollution. 7. If a passing tanker spills oil many penguins can die. 8. In 1971 an oil tanker the Wafra spilled thousands of gallons of oil off the coast of southern Africa. 9. Whenever there is an oil spill near this area the number of healthy penguins declines. 10. The ideal situation of course is to make the oil tankers take a completely different form. more

Voting Question: What are the proofs of a general flood from tradition?

Hesiod speaks of destruction of human race, without mentioning means. Ovid's description of Deucalian flood, taken from traditions of his day. Berosus in Chaldean annals gives account of deluge. Xisuthius king of Babylon, saved by warning of Chronos. The ark, the animals in pairs, the birds sent out, etc., all described. Similar tradition existed in Media and Assyria. In Egypt the Deucalian flood was believed in, this by Greeks was transferred to Greece. Egyptians made Deucalian an Egyptian, Greeks a Grecian. The Arundelian marbles have inscribed this flood. Plutarch speaks of the dove as a tradition of his time. Curious Deucalion, son of Prometheus and grandson of Japetus according to Greeks-Japeth of Japet, son of Noah according to Moses. Pliny speaks of deluge as settled point, and of Joppa in Syria as older "antiquior terrarum inundatione." Speaks, too, of the whale "fabulosa ceta," as worshipped there. Here, too, a whale swalled Andromeda. It is curious that Joppa is port whence Jonah embarked. Among the Persians, the Magi believed in a general deluge. Vanity of each nation fixed on one of its own mountains to rest the ark on, and some of its own people to be saved. China possesses traditions on the same subject, e.g. Confusius, 400 A.C., opens his history of China with country still under water. The Hindoos in Sanserit commemorate same; it is a principal subject of a great poem Mahabharat, in which Manu a pious king is saved in vessel which rested on Himovan mountains. Eight persons were saved. The Koran preserves the same tradition. Magagines of Africa same traditions, etc.Welltravelledprog, didn't mean to offend you buddy!Agreed BB you should read this book called A Digest of the Laws, Customs, Manners and Institutions of the Ancient and Modern Nations! Voting Question: Intelligence amongst black Africans, Asians, and Europeans are genetic?

Blacks evolved in the jungle/savannah where subsistence is not that difficult. Sub-Saharan Africa is abundant with edible fruits, animals, and plants. Thus, Africans had no motivations to challenge their intellect and become smarter like Caucasians and Asians did. Africa is a land where athleticism is required. The wildlife and harsh climate/diseases produce strong bodies - which is why blacks are on average faster and have more endurance than other races. But substantial intellect was not as much as a prerequisite for survival, hence, why blacks do not possess the cognitive abilities as other races. Europeans and North Orientals, on the other hand, evolved in an ice age. They needed to plan and use their minds to survive the winter (i.e. make efficient clothing, store food, etc). Is it a coincidence that Europeans and North Orientals (China, Japan, Korea) have the highest IQs in the world? Is it a coincidence that most of the inventions and scientific discoveries in history have been made by these people? The answer is no. These people evolved to be smart. Blacks evolved to be athletic. more

======PLEASE ALSO REMEMBER THIS IS FOR A 9TH GRADE ESSAY! NOTHING TO FANCY======= some things teachers told me where is better topic and ending sentences to topic and and little more flare to the conclusion. any ideas please post! Have you ever thought to yourself, who cares how that animal feels, or if he doesn’t have any feelings? In the story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, by Richard Connell, the two main characters share a common thread in their ambition for hunting, lack of sympathy for their prey, and distinct cleverness, these similarities significantly affect the course of the story. Rainsford and Zaroff have a vivid passion for hunting, like the undeniable passion you have for it to be Friday, as you drag your self out of bed on Monday morning. Rainsford’s passion for hunting is evident throughout the story. In the beginning of the story Rainsford calls hunting “the best sport in the world” (Connell 24), as the story progresses when Zaroff tests Rainsford. Rainsford puts his hunting skills forward when playing “The Game”, giving Zaroff a comparable challenge. Zaroff, like Rainsford, has a strong admiration for hunting. It is clearly evident that Zaroff is an avid hunter. When Rainsford is greeted into Zaroff’s enormous chateau he is met by the heads of many different animals, some of which he does not even recognize. Over dinner Zaroff tells of great stories like “I continued to hunt, grizzlies in your Rockies, crocodile in the Ganges, and rhinoceroses in east Africa” (Connell 33). When it comes to animals and unfortunately in Zaroff’s case humans, both Rainsford and Zaroff lack in sympathy for their prey. Rainsford's view on hunting in the beginning of “The Most Dangerous Game” is that animals were meant to be hunted. He believes that animals live with no fear or feelings of being hunted and says, "The world is made two classes, the hunters and the huntees" (Connell 25). But as expected, Rainsford's look on hunting takes a dramatic change when he becomes the hunted! Zaroff's outlook on hunting is that of a murderous man, he lures people to Ship-Trap Island for his own personal benefit and satisfaction. The only time Zaroff shows affection for his victims is when he’s sizing them up in his chateau, like an enormous steak. Zaroff becomes so caught up in his own arrogance that he explains, "The animal had nothing but his legs and his instinct. Instinct is no match for reason" (Connell 33). So Zaroff hunts the one game that has the ability to reason, humans. He somehow justifies hunting and killing men by saying, "Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure. I am strong. Why should I not use my gift? If I wish to hunt, why should I not” (Connell 32)? This shows Zaroff’s deep selfishness, and arrogance. Ever hear someone say “Street smarts outweigh book smarts”, in Rainsford and Zaroff’s case both are genuinely intelligent but most of all their use of survival skills and street smarts help them amidst their journey. Rainsford was extremely alert throughout his adventures in the dense jungle and always remembered to keep his composure by repeating, “Don’t loose your nerve” (Connell 36). He handled the conditions and horror’s he was dealt with, he uses his sneaky cleverness to outsmart Zaroff in his own game, and uses prior knowledge of everything he had ever learn of survival. Zaroff is intelligent considering he could outwit and manipulate every animal, and human. He knew how to manipulate and scare people into thinking that the circumstances they where put through was the only option and was necessary. Zaroff again manipulates Rainsford during dinner, the way Zaroff talks so smooth with such generosity, and manors, saying things like “I read all books on hunter published in, English, French, and Russian” (Connell 29). Zaroff made Rainsford and even the reader think “Wow this guy knows what he’s talking about.” In conclusion, Rainsford concludes a good philosophy to live life by is, treat others how you want to be treated. In the end Rainsford and Zaroff have many similarities in there traits that effect the movement of the story. more

Resolved Question: Mormons, is all of this true?

And if it is, could you please explain it to me? I hope I'm not coming off as rude, I've been studying Mormonism for about 6 months now, and just want a general understanding. Thank you! -God was once a man like us. -God has a tangible body of flesh and bone. -God lives on a planet near the star Kolob. -God ("Heavenly Father") has at least one wife, our "Mother in Heaven," but she is so holy that we are not to discuss her nor pray to her. -Jesus was married. -We can become like God and rule over our own universe. -There are many gods, ruling over their own worlds. -Jesus and Satan ("Lucifer") are brothers, and they are our brothers - we are all spirit children of Heavenly Father -Jesus Christ was conceived by God the Father by having sex with Mary, who was temporarily his wife. -We should not pray to Jesus, nor try to feel a personal relationship with him. -The "Lord" ("Jehovah") in the Old Testament is the being named Jesus in the New Testament, but different from "God the Father" ("Elohim"). -In the highest degree of the celestial kingdom some men will have more than one wife. -Before coming to this earth we lived as spirits in a "pre-existence", during which we were tested; our position in this life (whether born to -Mormons or savages, or in America or Africa) is our reward or punishment for our obedience in that life. -Dark skin is a curse from God, the result of our sin, or the sin of our ancestors. If sufficiently righteous, a dark-skinned person will become light-skinned. -The Garden of Eden was in Missouri. All humanity before the Great Flood lived in the western hemisphere. The Ark transported Noah and the other survivors to the eastern hemisphere. -Not only will human beings be resurrected to eternal life, but also all animals - everything that has ever lived on earth - will be resurrected and dwell in heaven. -Christ will not return to earth in any year that has seen a rainbow. -Mormons should avoid traveling on water, since Satan rules the waters. -The sun receives its light from the star Kolob. -If a Gentile becomes Mormon, the Holy Ghost actually purges his Gentile blood and replaces it with Israelite blood. -A righteous Mormon will actually see the face of God in the Mormon temple. -You can identify a false angel by the color of his hair, or by offering to shake his hand. I read that somewhere, and was wondering if it was true and what isn't, and if you could explain it to me. Thank you!And I got that from this website : http://packham.n4m.org/tract.htm more

Resolved Question: Why is it that men create 99% of the problems in the world?

War, suicide bombs, the invention of the gun, child molestation, rape, most murder, the greed on Wallstreet, skinning animals alive in China, grotesque animal abuse, dirty politics, most lying that goes on, the Holocaust, genocide in Africa, harpooning whales, the list goes on forever. Why are men in charge? Women nag, can hurt their children, murder occasionally, steal, be bitches. Most large scale problems are caused by men. What is up with that? *****Good point Donut Tim, but I am convinced that if women were in charge there wouldn't have been a Holocaust, there wouldn't be starving children in Africa, there wouldn't be war, there wouldn't be animals being tortured and rainforests being obliterated. Men create these problems then it takes men to try and fix them (EPA) but they wouldn't have been there in the first place of women were in charge, Is it the testosterone thing? Is it hormonal, the lack of sensitivity producing estrogen? The lack of the ability to produce a child in your body?BTW this doesn't include gay men who as a whole are as caring and sensitive and peace-loving as women. more

What about the Nazis in WW2 and the Japanese in the same war. Resolved Question: What telephoto lens should I get for my Nikon D2x?

Right now I have a Nikkor 55-200 mm lens for my Nikon D2x, and I really absolutely love it but this summer I'm going to be doing a safari in Africa and I'm worried I won't be able to zoom in far enough to get some really up close shots of the animals. Resolved Question: What is the Name of that Song?

Does anyone know what this song is from my description? It was set in Africa with people pretending to be animals and they had the body paint on and they were all roaming about on their way to a watering hole. When they reach the watering hole they all wash off their art work and splash about. The song sort of sounds like "Heya, nah, nah, nah, nah!" and it was probably released in the last ten years. Voting Question: What do you think of my story?

It's for reading class, and I know some details are historically/scientifically inaccurate, but please read it! The Silence of the Elephants In Africa, on a serene plain, there once lived a small elephant family and a giraffe. The elephants, Clare, Dave, and John, enjoyed their lives together with their best friend Molly. They had everything they could ever want in their peaceful home: an abundant source of water, all the leaves and grass they could dream of, trees to provide shade, and there were not many things they had to worry about. In that time, the early 1900s, there weren’t any loud cars or bustling cities to disturb them. However, there was something they had to be afraid of. The men approached the animals’ land, and looked, from a hill, down at their prey. They had an arsenal of guns, and the tusks of two elephants they had killed with those weapons. The poachers would stop at nothing to get what they were looking for, and they were very close. They spotted three elephants, two large ones with a plethora of ivory, and a smaller one who had not yet grown tusks but would be suitable for a meal. They would be effortless kills. “We could easily take one of them,” a poacher noted. “I think that one,” The other hunter pointed at Clare. “is the best.” The two men closed in on the elephants, and, without warning, shot Clare in the leg. It wasn’t a fatal wound, but Clare fell unconscious. The shock left her immobile long enough for the poachers to drag her away. Dave, John, and Molly watched in horror. Dave wanted to fight the cruel humans who had trespassed on his land, but he was too afraid of their guns. The poachers made camp with Clare about a kilometer from her home. They planned on killing the defenseless animal later. For now they would just enjoy the sight of her suffer. But little did they know Dave and Molly would stop at nothing to get their beloved friend back. And they were already halfway to the camp. Dave and Molly didn‘t have much of a plan. They just agreed they would leave baby John on the plain because it was too dangerous for him. Next, they would simply go to the poachers’ camp and attack. The possibility of death was too real for them, and it was frightening too. But the possibility of losing Clare was a much worse alternative. Clare was in pain, but she had awoken and was lucid enough to feel the vibrations that flowed through the ground. The vibrations came from two sets of feet; the heavier ones of an elephant, and the lighter ones of a giraffe. Clare’s attackers were sleeping and didn’t notice the charging animals. They would be defenseless once Dave and Molly got to them. Clare felt certain she would be saved. Molly arrived first with Dave following seconds after her. The men, now awake, were startled and reached for their guns. Dave’s massive foot easily crushed the weapons, and any hope the poachers had of getting ivory from Clare. The men ran. They ran until they couldn’t see the animals anymore, and then some more for good measure. Once they felt safe, they vowed they would never hunt elephants again. Clare limped back home with the help of her friends. John was elated to see his mother. Reunited with those she cared most about, Clare tried to put the horrific events of the day behind her. She rested, and her leg eventually healed. The animals lived the rest of their lives without any more fears. more

Resolved Question: How To Pursue a Career In Zoology?

I have a growing interest with animals and zoology. I was hoping to enter in a career either as some sort of animal keeper at a zoo, educator at a sanctuary, or perhaps even a guide on some eco-tourist reserve. I would love to study ethology. Though I do understand that the biology of animals and such is something I would have to learn, their behaviors and such are fascinating to me. Though I haven't had any hands on experience (so my mind could change) I am currently very interested in animals native to Africa. I know i must definitely have to set out and try to volunteer at a zoo or wildlife rehab center. However, I am having trouble searching for colleges with good zoology departments. I live in Northeast U.S. and most programs only offer an emphasis on animal biology (most being environmental biology period) with a very small portion being ethology. I was wondering if anyone had any advice in terms of colleges on the east coast with more hands on zoology majors. Thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: What camera should I purchase for my upcoming safari?

I'm going to eastern Africa on March 19 and am looking for a good camera to take on my safari. I have no experience with photography, however am willing to put in some time to learn how to use a quality camera if it is necessary. I'm a 20 year old student at a university so I can learn and pick things up relatively quickly. My budget is about $1000. Again, the main purpose for this camera is to take pictures of animals on a safari. I've done a little research comparing ultra zoom cameras with dslr cameras, so I understand some of the lingo, but I'm definitely still a beginner and having trouble making a decision. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if you guys have any suggestions on what features to look for or even specific cameras and accessories that you think I could use that would be great. The more specific the better! more
