Resolved Question: 1968 VW heater cable?

I got my heater cable installed on my '68 VW. Since the blockage was at the top of the exit tube, I was able to drill thru it with a long bit. I then went to the hardware store a bought 10' of cable (like the one that is a safety cable on your garage door springs) and ran it back and forth several time thru the tube and that cleaned it out. Thanks for everybodys help. I could not figure out how to respond to your suggestions on the original questions. Now I need help on learning how to use this site. (duh) more

Resolved Question: Please help. Why is my Genie screw-drive garage door opener not opening the door?

I replaced a liftmaster chain driven opener with a genie and everything seem to go pretty okay. I still haven;t done the floor safety beams or the wall control but when I hookup the door to the genie and test it using the remote. The motor runs for a second or two, lifts the door about an inch off the ground and then stops. Is the door to heavy? its a 2 car garage but the spings and everything is fine and when I open and close the door by hand the torsioin springs seem to be doing the job becasue the door feels nice and light,. I also tried adjusting the open and close FORCE dial on the opener but that didn;t seem to help. The instrucion manual says that the wall control and the safety beams must be installed to be able to CLOSE the door, but at this point i;m just trying to test if it will open.... Please help! Can i use the floor beams from the liftmaster? more

Resolved Question: Can I replace my torsion springs in my garage doors with extension type?

I am fairly handy and have a double car garage door. I came home the other day and one of the torsion springs has snapped. My research revealed that there should in fact be two springs up there either side of the center and there is only one - now broken! Nice - thanks Mr Contractor who built the house. I have researched how to replace these and it looks OK, although new torsion springs are somewhat expensive and a little tricky to install. The extension springs are much cheaper and appear much easier to install. Can I simply remove the torsion springs and put in a tension spring system instead? more

Resolved Question: Installing a new garage door, crazy idea?

I'm not necessarily a "handy man" but my father passed away recently and the garage door at my mom's house is really beat up and I want to install a new one. I don't have a lot of handy man skills but I can pay for the garage door myself and I was wondering how difficult it was. If I should bother, what kind've help I'd need, and things like that. It doesn't have the torsion spring which I've read is dangerous, just the standard two springs on either side. I went to Lowe's, the garage door I'm looking at is nice and I can afford it, I was just wondering if there's any tips anyone can give me on installing a new one. Like.... how to do it. I'm going to go back to my mom's and take a look at it again, then go to Lowe's and ask them exactly what comes with the door. They said it comes with a "kit" but I'm not sure what that is. My mom's door already has the track and everything but I'm not sure if the springs are working too well. The door stays open but I'm not sure how. Anyway if anyone could give me any tips or what not that would be great. more

Voting Question: Problem with extension springs for home garage door?

I have a clopay single garage door. The old extension springs broke around a year ago. I also have a garage door opener hooked up. Since the garage still worked I never thought about replacing the springs until the bolt that is connected to the door sheared off and the door crashed to the floor. I have now installed (2) new 110 lb springs, cables and pulleys. The problem that I am having is that one side of the garage door track has been cut 15 inches shorter to make room for something else in the garage. Where the extension springs connect to the frame closest to the opener. The side of the track that is shorter, when the springs are attached will not go all the way down and the spring extends too far. I have tried cutting the spring but still have the same problem. Do I need to change the spring to a heavier rating? Any help would be appreciated. more

Resolved Question: How heavy should an installed garage door be? ?

I have a shed/garage with a large (double wide) insulated garage door on it. I'd like to install an opener on it but I'm wondering if it might be too heavy for the standard 3/4 hp openers. I used a hanging scale and lifted the door and it took about 70 lbs of force to open it. I haven't tried taking the springs off and weighing it without the springs. Should I be worried that this is too heavy for a 3/4 hp opener and, how can I tell if I need to put heavier springs on it first? Advice?  more

Resolved Question: How difficult is it to install a 9' wide by 8' high garage door sans a professional?

Resolved Question: Are my garage door's springs correctly adjusted?

I went to install my garage door opener and it says that the door should hold its own weight when let go half way up. It comes down with weight when I do this, and weighs quite a bit. The home builder said its fine. But is it? more

Resolved Question: Question about installing a garage door opener?

We have what I guess you'd call a double-wide garage door (2 car garage, 1 door) and have been thinking about having an opener installed. In the middle of the garage, and consequently, in the middle of the door, we have a floor to ceiling support beam. It is approximately 8 inches from the spring for the door at the ceiling. Is it still possible to have an opener installed? I was doing some research and read that the opener should be position in the middle of the door. Thanks for any advice! Thanks for the quick responses! It looks like I left out one detail. The current door is a 1 layer steel door. Also, I was planning on hiring a pro to do this work. more

Resolved Question: I have a craftsman 3/4 hp belt garage door opener. While closing sometimes it reopens. Can anyone help?

When the door gets to the ground it doesn't slow down at the bottom like normal operation. It builds pressure and immediately reopens. It only does this sometimes, but it is becoming quite frequent. During normal operation the door gets close to the ground and slows down before stopping.I had my home builder come inspect the spring and they said that the spring was fine, and that I may have a problem with the opener which they didn't install. more

Resolved Question: Intalling Garage Door Torsion Springs.?

We all know that installing garage door torsion springs with the door closed is VERY dangerous for most people to tackle. You have to wind them by 7.5 turns for a 7 foot door. Can the torsion springs be installed with the door open all the way up with just a 1/2 turn winding up? As the door is is closed, the springs will be tighten up. Has anyone tried it? more

Resolved Question: Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener problems in cold weather?

We have two Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door openers but only have a problem with one of them! In the very cold weather, one opener simply stops - either when going up or coming down. If it stops when going up, you press the remote and it strarts coming down. Press the remote again, the door stops and then press the remote again and it starts going back up. The colder the weather the worse the problem. It may stop only once if it is not so cold or three times if it is very cold. The opener was installed in 1994. There are never any problems in the spring, summer, fall seasons. more

Resolved Question: How do I install a garage door opener to an old garage door that is one solid door (not sectional)?

I just bought a house with an older garage. The garage door is one solid door that raise up and into the garage. The only track system is on the top to guide the door into the garage. Door is attached to a spring for easier opening and closing and has 2 pivot points I think. My main question is: "Is it possible to put a garage door opener on a door like this?" Secondly, "How do I install said garage door opener?" more
