Resolved Question: My guinea pig has white spots on his ears... could this be malnutrition?
I got a guinea pig 2 days ago that was clearly not being fed correctly at the pet store. I talked to one saleswoman who said they were being fed ONLY alfalfa hay (which has too much calcium in high doses, even for young ones) and pellets, no vegetables at all. She also said they didn't supplement any extra vitamin C into their diet because "there was more than enough in the pellets." Now I think he might have a vitamin C deficiency, along with too much calcium. I've been feeding him timothy hay, timothy-based pellets, fresh grass (don't worry, no pesticides), kale and green peppers to try to correct the problem. I tried to find him vitamin C drops at the pet store as well, but the only ones I found were yogurt and he definitely doesn't need any more calcium. His pee dried completely white last night, today it looked more milky which is a good sign.
So, my question is - could the rough, raised white spots I've noticed on the back and sides of his ears be related to malnutrition? He definitely doesn't have mites because he hasn't been scratching at it, and otherwise his coat looks perfectly healthy. I'm wondering if it's just dry skin, or maybe even just his normal skin texture, but I'm not sure. Are the bumpy spots are a bad sign? Does anyone who knows more about guinea pigs have any idea what this could indicate?
By the way, his ear is completely bald and pink, that's why I can see the bumps so well. I'm not sure if he has anything similar on his other ear because it's black.

will the world end if you make two meals? arent you supposed to eat a well balanced diet? so whats so hard about making something out of rice? or is it lack of ingenuity? "can make meat, cant make vegetarian" - sounds like extreme laziness. do people realize they are already giving vegan food to their pets? look what's in dry dog food. corn, wheat, rice, barley, arent they carnivores?
or is it because of B12? I've heard of a research that shows even omnivores have a B12 deficiency. now what? looks like you'll still have to eat some supplements. or is it calcium? but most of the world doesnt suck someone else's titties into adulthood and their bones are fine.

moreResolved Question: Calcium deposits in baby's teeth....?
My 20-month-old daughter has what looks like calcium deposits in her front teeth. They are bright white spots, with sort of irregular edges. She only has 8 teeth so far, so I have only noticed them in a couple of places. I have them on my teeth as well, and although our dentist has never mentioned them, I'm wondering if they're hereditary or a sign of a nutritional deficiency? I have them on almost every single one of my teeth. Does anyone know anything about this? If you or your S.O. have these things, do your kids have them, too? Thanks for the link, but she doesn't get any fluoride yet, except the tiny amount that might be in our tap water. I wonder if that would be enough to cause it...?

moreResolved Question: I've had low iron and now my head hurts and my chest feels tight. Is it still my iron?
About two weeks ago, I went to the doctor with headaches and fatigue and was told that my iron was scraping the bottom of "below average." I was told to take Flintstones and Calcium pills, and I have. I felt better for a while, and then a few days ago I got really dizzy, broke out in a cold sweat, and actually passed out briefly, but then I felt fine almost immediately after. And now, a few days later, my headaches are back, I still feel fatigued, I'm pretty sure I've had some fever, and my chest feels really, really tight. Last night/ this morning, I had some soreness in my throat, but that has since eased up while my other symptoms have not.
I'm just wondering if these new symptoms are signs of more iron deficiency problems, or if they more closely resemble a chest cold/ bronchitis.

Hey I have a couple of apple snails I bought about a week ago, and since then their golden shells have been peeling off to reveal a bright yellow color. Are they just shedding or is this a sign of calcium deficiency? If it is the latter, can anyone suggest ways to increase calcium other than buying a calcium bottle? (the nearest pet store is about an hour from my house) I've heard of using crushed coral and oysters etc. but I don't have access to those things, I need something around the house. Would calcium tablets work?

1. the answer is B, and I was referring to a visible tail, as in, "if you pick a guinea pig up by the tail its eyes will fall out"
2. B, again. Although PVC pipes can be unsafe if your pig is really fat and cat toys need to be sturdy.
3. D is toxic. they say celery is bad for them because it's stringy... but... not really. not if you cut it small.
4. um. definately not rabbits. other guinea pigs are usually the best choice, or yourself.
5. vitamin C...
medium
1. apparently, almost 60% of all homes have a dog or cat, and about 35% have children, so, believe it or not, C&C isn't necessarily "the best". It's nice for piggies to hav lots of room but enclosed cages are generally safer for them, and you can still let them out for monitored playtime with as much free space as they want. so, in my opinion (by the way, there's not really a wrong answer for this, except for wire-bottomed rabbit cages) i would put b, then D or C, depending on how the homemade cage is made, thenA
moreResolved Question: What to make of this? Purina lying to customers?
So, a previous question asked about Purina. I went to their website and did some poking around and found the following in the FAQ's.
"Here are some of the foods to watch out for:
* Milk is a food and not a substitute for water.
* Repeatedly adding raw eggs to a dog's diet can cause a deficiency of the vitamin biotin, which can lead to dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), loss of hair and poor growth.
* Some raw fish can cause a deficiency of the vitamin thiamine. Signs of a thiamine deficiency include anorexia (complete loss of appetite), abnormal posture, weakness, seizures and even death.
* Raw meats may contain parasites and bacteria and do not contain a proper balance of nutrients if fed alone. Although meat is a source of protein, it has very low levels of calcium, a mineral dogs require for proper bone and tooth development. If large quantities of raw meat are fed over time, skeletal problems may develop.
* Raw liver, fed daily in large quantities, can cause vitamin A toxicity in dogs.
* Small soft bones (such as pork chop or chicken bones) should never be given to your dog, as they may splinter and lodge in his mouth or throat."
And:
What is Wheat Gluten?
Wheat gluten is the natural protein extracted from wheat or wheat flour. In addition to its rich protein content, wheat gluten produces the texture and consistency desired in many high quality food products, both human and pet. It has been a trusted food ingredient, used for decades in the preparation of breakfast cereals, high quality pastas and whole wheat bakery goods. Baking represents more than 60% of the total usage worldwide, and many of our healthier multi-grain and whole grain breads would not be appealing without it.
Why is Wheat Gluten an Important Pet Food Ingredient?
Just as wheat gluten is used in human foods, such as breads, to provide a desired consistency and texture, wheat gluten is used in pet foods for similar reasons. Many pet foods use wheat gluten to help other ingredients come together to form nutritious, good tasting, and appealing foods. While primarily used to enhance texture, wheat gluten also provides good quality protein. With 75% concentration of protein by weight, wheat gluten is an excellent source of protein. When used in combination with other protein sources, a balanced level of amino acids can be attained for the dietary needs of the cat and dog. In its complementary effect with other protein sources, wheat gluten also promotes lean muscle mass and healthy organs.
Purina has used wheat gluten in its foods for nearly twenty years without incident. Independent regulatory organizations, including U.S. FDA and the Association of American Feed Control Officials, as well as respected professional organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association and the American Institute of Baking, all acknowledge the nutritional value and suitability of wheat gluten in foods for human or pet consumption. There should be no concern with wheat gluten as a pet food ingredient.
You have got to be kidding me? Do customers actually believe this? Purina is basically lying to them and telling them to poison their dogs with their crap food!
What do you all think of this?
Here's where I found this info:
http://www.purina.com/WheatGluten.aspx
http://www.purina.com/dogs/food/FactsAboutFeeding.aspx
LEGIT: How many rawhide treats do your dogs get in an average week?"Look into your dog or cat's mouth. Those huge impressive teeth (or tiny needle sharp teeth) are designed for grabbing, ripping, tearing, shredding, and shearing meat (Feldhamer, G.A. 1999. Mammology: Adaptation, Diversity, and Ecology. McGraw-Hill. pg 258.). They are not equipped with large flat molars for grinding up plant matter. Their molars are pointed and situated in a scissors bite (along with the rest of their teeth) that powerfully disposes of meat, bone, and hide. Carnivores are equipped with a peculiar set of teeth that includes the presence of carnassial teeth: the fourth upper premolar and first lower molar."
If someone showed me a dog with flat molars made for chewing plant matter, ie: wheat gluten, I will drop my argument.
Oh, and here's my puppy, not saying she's better than yours, no one can compete with *your* award winning, amazing dogs (vomit).
http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn94/lkburwitz/Picture051.jpgTJ- I still want to know if you are receiving kick-backs from Purina. Find it funny that you have them as a contact and you are so against any other type of food. Again, show me a dog with FLAT molars made to chew and digest plant matter.
Dogs don't have flat mollars, therefore, not omnivores, and don't need fruits and veggies.Still would like to know what's wrong with my dog T J.

moreResolved Question: Why am I having random, sharp leg pains at night?
Okay, so last night and one other night I woke up in the middle of the night with this awful leg pain in my calf. It was a really sharp pain, almost unbearable, and I was gasping for air when I woke up. I've heard this could be a sign of type 2 diabetes, which I'm worried about because of my family history. I'm only 16 and I'm not overweight, so I'm thinking it could be something in my back or a calcium deficiency (other things I've heard). Could someone tell me some other possible causes and link me to any medical websites, if possible? Thanks in advance.

Ive been struggling with several health problems over the past few years.
I gained nearly 100 pounds in a year, began having achene problems, excessive facial hair growth, my menstrual cycles have been extremely messed up as well.
Nearly two years ago i took a 24 hour urine and it came back elevated but then was dismissed and i ws told i had PCOS, although after several ultrasounds nothing was ever found.
I switched doctors and ended up in ER for heart pains. They found a tumor on my adrenal gland, then told me it was nothing.
I requested an endocrinologist. She has taken blood work, and ive done two -24 hour cortisol test, both coming back elevated. I also have a sever vitamin D deficiency, calcium deficiency, and my testosterone levels were through the rough. Blood tests also indicated borderline diabetes.
i took Dexamethasone last night and went in for an 8 am blood work up.
My doctor seems very reluctant to believe it is cushion's although i display several textbook signs.
What will the next steps be? what should i anticipate? anyone else been through this situation? what should i do or be weary of?
any advice or personal experience would be helpful.
moreResolved Question: Bald patch top of head?
I'm 19 and am a guy. Someone pointed out to me the other day that I had a small bald patch on my head. I took a picture of the top of my head and I can see it. There are a few thin hairs there but i can clearly see the bald patch.
The front of my hair is also receding but I heard this is common with people with a heart face shape.
No-one in my family has had male pattern baldness. My elder brother and sister seem to have normal hair and even my dad at the age of 60 still has a lot of hair which has only receded a little bit.
Is all this a sign of inevitable baldness or some other condition. Don't know if it's relevant but I have always had white patches on my fingernails for many years which is not a deficiency of zinc or calcium as I took supplements and they were still there.

I'm confused - don't know which is the cause of my puppy's bone 'deformation'. Maybe I just couldn't tell 1 set of symptoms from the other?
My puppy eats commercial dog food, plus Calcium + Phosphorous supplement, some milk + beef. So, calcium surplus or deficiency?
My puppy has these signs:
Signs: crooked fore and hindlegs (fiddle front/back, splayfeet, elbowing out, cow-hocks), the dog seems to be "plantigrade" because pasterns and hocks have excessive slope.
high temperature, reluctance to move, symmetrical articular deformations, hot joints, splay feet
http://www.zooclub.ru/eng/dogs/korm/10.shtml
A) Calcium deficiency combined with surplus phosphorus?
B) Surplus vitamin D combined with calcium deficiency?
C) Surplus vitamin D combined with surplus calcium?
I've read "To give or not to give calcium to large breed dog?" but still not very clear which one. Now, I don't know whether I should give him MORE or LESS calcium. The Vet doesn't seem to be sure either. Help!!Thanks for ur responses.
- I feed him Eukanuba Puppy Lamb and Rice formula, for large breed. So yes, I agree it should be balanced enough, no need extra suplmt. I've stopped giving him the Cal+Phosp suplmt, milk n beef. I'll observe what happens.
I only noticed these signs in the past 2 weeks (so, can't b genetic, can it?):
- He really does have problem getting up - he's using his fore-legs to 'pull' himself up now. When he sits, he sits on his thigh (rather than butt) and even then, he would lie down very soon, too tired I guess.
- I also notice last night that he has a slightly hunched back. So, when he sits, his fore-legs r a bit short, guess that's why he's tired.
- We only noticed his limping/(lame?) a week ago.
- Will ask my vet about Hip Dysplasia. Blood test-will try to find out too. I'm confining his movement now, in a small room. Hopefully he'll get better.
Another vet suggests I try giving a food suplmt (Glucosamine main component) which she says is good for the joint?By the way, my puppy's legs look exceedingly long - and thin (His whole body looks thin, too). So thin, I'm worried he might be vulnerable to breaking his legs accidentally. It is as if his legs have 'over-grown'. Plus his back hunches a bit (see above). I wonder if this strengthens either side of the theory (too much/little)? Thanks. Also, his paws are 'wide'/'expanded', it seems. they are larger than usual. And I notice some yellowish discharge always at the tip of his penis, foul-smelling and . Especially 'thick' after he pees. It's been like that for at least 2 months, we never paid much attention to it (just wiped it off after he pees). Does this indicate something relevant?

My mother just called and told me to get some Centrum Materna vitamins. There is no way I'm going to get pregnant soon unless it's by immaculate conception. I think she's just hoping, but anyway, she says it's good for all women of childbearing age and I need the folic acid because there is folic acid deficiency in our family. I don't know if I could have that because I asked a couple of doctors and they said there is no sign of that deficiency in my blood tests. I've had low iron though and I always forget to take the iron pills and the other vitamins I need like vitamin D and Calcium. Maybe one vitamin would be easier. Also I would like to have kids if I had the right relationship, but I don't know because I'm already 38- so is it a good idea to take Centrum Materna now or not?
