Growth then ceased abruptly and the cells entered a steady state with respect to net protein synthesis. This was followed by cytoplasmic retraction and cell death. Increasing the concentrations of calcium or magnesium in the medium failed to prevent the effects of alkalosis. Moreover, the increase in CO-3 concentration of the media and the concomitant decrease in Ca ++ ion concentration that occur at high pH were eliminated as determining factors in the growth failure and death. While acidosis had a less pronounced effect on the 3 day cell population, its effect on the growth rate was immediate. The increase in cell generation time was proportional to the H + ion concentration. In each of the cell lines studied, acidosis was accompanied by a striking increase in the number of cytoplasmic perinuclear granules. These granules which stain supravitally with Janus green are extracted from fixed cells with lipid solvents. They maintain their identity in cell homogenates and may be isolated from the other subcellular structures by differential centrifugation; at 100,000 g they form a distinct layer at the top of the supernatant fraction. On the basis of their physical and chemical properties, these granules have been called lipid-rich particles. The accumulation of lipid-rich particles in acidosis was independent of the growth rate and the CO.2 concentration." more

These were selected and taken to the workstation. A hole was poked under each cup by a pencil which was approximately 0.2 cm wide. Each one of the plastic cups was then filled with 1.7 cm or 2.5 grams of green mix potting soil. The three cups were then labeled from one to three. One was acting as a control for a normal growth rate with only the essentials (water). The 2nd and 3rd cup would be a constant where as each of these cups would get the essentials and a fixed amount of Epsom salt over the course of 4 weeks. A pea seed was then placed in each cup with a depth of 1 cm deep within the soil .The cups were then gently placed under a constant light source for the next 4 weeks. 12 ml of Nestle bottled water was measured by the beaker which was then 6 to 7 degrees measured by the thermometer was added to each cup every day around 12:00pm. 0.5 grams of Epsom salt was added to the 2nd cup and 1 gram of Epsom salt was added to the 3rd cup every week. The growth of the plant was then recorded every day until the end of the 4th week. (tell me if you can replicate this without any problem) The result section im good with but i dont understand the discussion section all i got was this- The purpose of the experiment was to see if Epsom salt would actually serve as a type of nutrient that would enhance the plants growth rate and make the pea seed germinate faster .The results of the experiment proved this right indicating that the plant with the most Epsom salt added to it eventually had enhanced the growth rate of the plant with a faster germination process. Compared to the control each of the two constants grew faster and higher due to the benefit of Epsom salt being added to them. At the end of the 4th week the control grew exactly 2.2 cm compared to the first constant which grew 2.6 with 0.5 grams added to it per week for four weeks and the second constant that grew a total of 2.8 cm with 1 gram added to the plant once a week for four consecutive weeks. The hypothesis was proven correct, increasive amounts of Epsom salt were added to the pea plant and the germination of the seed increased rapidly and efficiently surpassing the controls growth rate. The pattern and relationship was that the more Epsom salt that was added to the pea plant the more the plants growth rate enhanced. It can be used as a type of fertilizer and or nutrient that can help plants germinate at a fast rate. The results conclude that Epsom salt is an effective and efficient substance that can be added to a germinating pea seed to enhance the growth rate. Voting Question: What Metabolic disorder do I have?

What metabolic disorder do I have? I'm a 22 year old African American Male. Ever since 14 I've had major problems metabolizing CARBs, PROTEIN, and FAT properly. Through the years, the problem has evolved tremendously. But this is the state of the condition now (I'll give a history of the condition later, including a little family history). I seem to need a very specific amount of CARBs, PROTEIN, and FAT everyday (by the gram), depending on my level of physical activity and/or how much muscle mass I have at the time. Being off by a few grams leads to devestating symptoms. My level of activity now is moderate (no exercise but lots of walking and moving and performing on stage) and I'm 6' and about 170 lean (always been lean and can never gain FAT). At 190 pounds lean with regular weight training exercises (back in 2006), I have needed needed double and triple the amounts I report below. Morning - I usually wake up VERY hungry and slightly weak. I need to immediately feed at least 30 grams of PROTEIN and about 100g CARBs. If I don't I will get weaker and extremely irritable within an hour, lots of problems thinking and generally being extremely unproductive and tired. Consuming some corn starch (time release CARBs) or cottage cheese (time release PROTEIN) the night before will buy me more time in the morning before symptoms of starvation show up. Throughout the day - small feedings of CARBs throughout the day (at least 40g every hour) is best. An excess yields hyperglicemia symptoms of confusion, excess thirst, lack of coordination, etc. A set of pushups will usually correct the problem almost immediately, but sometimes too much activity will lead to more hunger and weakness (the flip side). I can take PROTEIN in large doses--as much as 60g without needing anymore PROTEIN for about 5 hours. I need about 20g to 30g of FAT through the day, but I can take it all in one shot (like a whole avocodo). I will usually notice a deficiency of FAT by the evening--confusion, dry mouth and throat, lethargy. An excess of FAT (in the 50g range) or PROTEIN (in the 70g in one sitting, or 200g that day) will lead to nothing more than some stomach discomfort if even that. End of day - any deficiency of any caloric nutrient (PROTEIN, CARBs, FAT) will lead to extreme premature drowsiness. If I do fall asleep because of this, it will most likely lead to minor seizures (my leg will shake and I'd see weird visions sometimes, or just paralysis, for a few seconds over and over again until I fall asleep), and a very shallow sleep. I've experienced stress induced seizures during the day time when I was either deficient in some nutrients or consumed an excess of CARBs. I'd uncontrolably destroy eveyrthing around me for about 5 seconds, followed by bitter weeping and emotional outbursts. It's usually brought on by a very minor confrontation with someone, which makes it very embarrassing to me and extremely puzzling to others. So far it's happened 10 times in my life and I hurt myself terribly one time (10 stiches needed for smashing ceramic to dust with brute force from bare hands). It wasn't until the 3rd time till I figured out it had less to do with anger and more to do with hypo or hyperglicemia. Personal history: When I was much younger (14 to 16) my main symptom was extreme thirst after every meal containing CARBs (much worse if it contained sugar), and I'd drink up to 3 gallons of water a day. The problem was virtually eliminated when I began an exercise regimen. I had to stop working out due to pain from Fibromyalgia, and the thirst problems came back. Then, when I was 15 I learned through natural dietery changes how to stop the pain (supplementing magnesium and avoiding wheat), and since then I've made it a point to stay active. At about 17 I read an article that suggests a high amount of PROTEIN and some FAT to fight off weakness from exercising. From then on I increased my intake and noticed huge differences in energy and I've never been able to get along without the right amounts everyday. I also been diagnosed as having asthma, scoliosis, ADHD, and epilespy. Family history: My Dad has DIabetes (Type 2). His mom has Diabetes (type 2). Anecdote: Today my Dad saw me boiling a big bag of beans (which I do at least a few times a week). He said I should save the beans for tomorrow and have some corn meal instead (which he cooked). This showed me that he could not even begin to understand how much I need PROTEIN, which shows he does not have that problem at all and does not take my problem seriously.Attempts to diagnose: So far no doctor has made any diagnosis. I've undergone tests for Diabetes and I'm definitely not a diabetic. One doctor says it's a pre diabetes stage. However I've never encountered anyone with as much need for PROTEIN as me, so I have no one to compare it to. Lots of research has lead me to Glycogen storage disease and I must say type 0 is very very close to my to my condition. However it does not address the need for PROTEIN. I still tell people I have Glycogen storage disease since it's the closest thing so far, but believe it or not I have only encountered one doctor out of a dozen who was familiar with it, and it was during a short conversation where not much information could be exchanged. I do not have any symptoms of sickle cell anemia according to my knowledge, but I do have a sickle cell trait.My anatomy and physiology teacher taught the class that PROTEIN deficiency can not be noticed until a few days, and FAT deficiency not until a few weeks. I told her this is not the case with myself. I notice a deficiency of each nutrient within a few hours of abstaining from either, and I experience a sense of relief as soon as I put the food containing that nutrient to my mouth. She did not take my inquiry seriously at all. If this seems familiar to you, please share what you know. Hey Yahoo, I've been thinking about starting taking vitamins because I fell that I might be lacking some based on my diet. I'm 16 years old, and drink a lot of milk, but I'm pretty sure that I don't get enough vitamin D for all the milk to be effective in harnessing the calcium. So I went to CVS today, and went to the vitamin aisle... ...can someone explain to me why a single bottle of Vitamin D, C, Magnesium, etc. costs $7 for 100 tablets, while a bottle of multivitamins, which has 100% daily value for nearly every vitamin and nutrient, costs $10 for 130 tablets. I'm told that a multivitamin will only give you 100% of the daily recommended value, while a specific tablet (like Vitamin D) will give you around 250% of the daily value. What's the point of spending money on one type of vitamin when you can get 10x more vitamins in one tablet for the same price? Thanks in advance more

Resolved Question: why is my friend having terrible leg cramps?

My friend is having a serious problem with leg cramps. She will get one in her calve and the as she is trying to stretch it out she gets one right at the front along her shin. The pain is awful because when both cramps hit (always the same leg) she can not stretch it in eather direction to quicken the relief. I told her to start a multivitamin and magnesium, as she may be depleted of nutrients, but after two weeks she is still getting them and not just at night. Keeping to any plan that fights against bad habits is tough but being fit and strong versus being fat and sickly is all about how many calories you eat versus how many you burn and IF the calories are mostly the BEST QUALITY PROTEINS or mostly junk sugar-carbs. Many years ago I found that the Atkins Diet Plan made me healthier compared to my old high carb diet since it put my diabetes symptoms into remission, but PLEASE consider my experiences when I used the Atkins high cholesterol and fat philosophy for my long term nutrition. After the Atkins plan promoted many diseases, what now works best in order for me to keep my pruritus-urticaria in remission, after my gallbladder-biliary-liver and heart disease problems, is a 96% VEGAN diet, (for the required B12), that is low-carb low-fat and HIGH-PROTEIN. Because of my gallbladder-biliary-liver disease I no longer can eat much olive oil or dressings or nuts or other fats or any cholesterol because it causes immediate pruritus since my liver’s biliary system is plugged with cholesterol and calcium sludge, and I can not eat too many carbs because of yeast infections that break out after one, two, or three high carb meals. What I now do is what they teach most students in high school nutrition classes - which is to add up the vitamins and minerals from my ‘digestible’ foods and calculating the RDA's [Recommended Dietary Allowances] or DV's [Daily Reference Values] for each day to see if I am more than 100% for Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Thiamine-VitB1, Riboflavin-VitB2, Niacin-VitB3, VitB6-Pyridoxine, and Folate-VitB9. Things like bran are not digestible and not added since it is like a work horse or work oxen eating straw instead of digestible grass or alfalfa leaves. Also, after I accidentally poisoned myself with supplements, I leaned that supplements like iron and magnesium and colloidal silver etc are super toxic since they are 'metallic' minerals and oftentimes raw fertilizers with a 1000 fold markup. These ‘metallic’ mineral supplements have not yet been converted into a non-toxic food when during photosynthesis the electrons in a fertilizer are stripped away making it the more positively charged ‘non-metallic’ and non-toxic mineral element within the plant. Also, the highly profitable synthetic vitamin supplements I used to purchase have no unambiguous research backing them, and there is some obviously valid research concluding that they are more toxic than beneficial to any animal that has ever consumed them. What now keeps my diseases in remission is a-lot of calories being from lentils mixed with boiled celery and/or carrots to make a quick microwave veg-chili. I boil all my foods since my digestive system is in such poor shape and I need as many nutrients as I can get out of the semi-expensive foods I buy. I used to eat much more meat when I was an Atkins dieter, before my pruritus attacks became so obvious that the cholesterol and fats in the meat or eggs and the calcium in the homemade yogurt I was eating was the root cause to the problem. FYI - IF you know of people getting colon cancer, it was during my Atkins period I learned to always eat enough vegetables to be a minimum of 2 x the weight of the meat that I ate - in order to not have any constipation or worse. I used to have reddish stools since I was likely on my way to getting colon cancer myself from eating much more meat protein than I could ever digest properly in my stomach and colon. After the Atkins Diet allowed my present health issues, I replaced the crock potted round steak or beef heart or chicken and sometimes river trout in my chili with lentils, because I learned that the nutritional content of lentils ranks high alongside, and comparable to, very lean meat or lean fish if it is grown in well fertilized soil. [Note: e.g. the labels on store bought spinach sometimes have a 4 fold difference in nutrition based upon the fertility of the soils and the growing methods for the farms it is grown on.] I also eat a-lot of boiled frozen broccoli and boiled organic or re-washed and re-boiled canned spinach with a vinaigrette of organic sugar with glass_bottled_cider_vinegar. The glassware is because of some friends that got lupus from eating too much plastic stuff, or inhaling it since they were house painters who used vinyl paints.The nutritional DV numbers that I now eat are three times what most others in my family are eating every day. I keep at about 100% and they are about 25 to 33%, but they are all morbidly obese diabetics. Even though I was once morbidly obese myself and had a heart attack from too many carbs for too long, (which I think gave me all the symptoms of beriberi, scurvy and pellagra, along with the beginnings of my gallbladder-biliary-liver disease), I am now more fit in comparison to most others I know. Boiling for thirty minutes also kills any salmonella bacteria or e-coli and even anthrax spores that may have somehow been introduced into the raw or commercially canned produce.Boiling also breaks vegetables down a first step so it is then easier to digest in the stomach, which would then minimize gi-digestion cancer problems from continually overworking your gi-digestion system. Hello, my question is a little bit long. If you'd like to know what I'm asking before reading all this, the actual question is at the bottom of the post. Thanks for reading! I'm a little confused. Today I bought a 30 oz jar of raw mixed nuts from Target. The brand is Archer foods (nutritional label to the right http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-c… Reading the label, the nutritional value seems little better than a Sunny D orange drink. Per 28 gram serving, the nuts fulfill only 2% of the daily vitamin c requirement, 4% of the daily calcium requirement and only 8% of the daily iron requirement. Now, I was under the impression that raw nuts contained lots of minerals, specifically magnesium-the mineral I'm trying to keep from being deficient in. So, I did a little bit of research on the actual nutritional value of some of the nuts found in my jar. The results have me befuddled. I picked the mineral magnesium in my research, but I'm sure the question I have extends to every mineral that raw nuts have. There is no mention of any minerals found in these nuts. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements (http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/magnesi… the Recommended Dietary Allowance of magnesium for adults aged 19-30 is 400 mg per day. According to the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/cg… the amount of magnesium found in: 28.35g of raw cashews is 83 mg. 28.35 g of raw almonds is 76 mg 28.35 g of raw hazelnuts is 46 mg 28.35 g of raw walnuts is 45 mg 28.35 g of raw pistachios is 34 mg One single serving of the Archer Raw Mixed Nuts is 28 grams. Now let us work with that serving and figure out how much Magnesium is in the serving. Dividing every nut's amount of magnesium by five and adding the results should give us this much magnesium: 16.6mg from cashews 15.2 mg from almonds 9.2 mg from hazelnuts 9.0 mg from walnuts 6.8 mg from pistachios Now, according to these numbers, there should be 58.6 mg of magnesium in every serving of the mixed nuts I bought, which should add up to 14.65% of the RDA. Now the question-why has this significant amount of nutritional information has been omitted? Do Archer Farms Raw Mixed Nuts not contain any magnesium, or any other mineral? Or do they choose not to list this information? I'm under the impression that raw nuts are not altered in any way, so what gives? Is Archer that lazy to not list nutritional information? It would seem dumb, as being nutritious is the selling point here, isn't it? Now, I've noticed this phenomena on various nutritional labels. The mixed nuts is the first time I've decided to check this out. I am thinking of switching my 10 yr old husky from Chicken Soup for the petlovers soul for seniors to Active care. It seems to be a very good dog food. Even though the main indgrident is not mean witch it should be. I want to switch, because Active care seems to be more for seniors and to help with joints and it has a good amount of glucosamine and chondroitin in every cup. Resolved Question: Help with milk alternative for my son at school...?

My son is 8 and is allergic to milk. According to the director of food services for the school district they are not allowed, by federal law, to serve him anything in place of the milk unless it has the exact same nutrients that milk provides. He gets nothing to drink until lunch is over. He gets a drink from the water fountain in the hall. I was unaware of this, I will be sending something with him but i would like to know. Isn't there anything out there that does provide the same nutrients?
