Voting Question: anyone has quick Peripheral Neuropathy pain relief for toes.?
I went to the doctor last week and they are checking my blood work to make sure I'm not diabetic (which i highly doubt bc of perfect blood sugar and cholesterol). However the symptoms have increase and my toe is tingling and becoming numb. I also have many symptoms of B vitamin deficiency (weight lost, cold hands and feet, muscle weakness, etc) so im taking them. I dont go to doctor again till thursday and i cant wait that long.
Is there any pain medication i could take to relieve me. Im currently taking magnesium calcium, B complex, vitamin E, 6-8 glasses of water per day. And im exercising. I go to my first physical therapy session tomorrow but i wont be able to do anything if im in pain.
Please tell me the best med and any other info if you know bc i just found out about neuropathy the other day. and i dont have time to be on computer much due to pain.
Thanks in advance.
moreVoting Question: For the last couple of weeks my daughter seems to be suffering from muscle tremors?
She's 9 years old and this started a couple weeks ago when she had an earache. That's when she started complaining about her legs twitching. I mentioned the doctor and she then got afraid. Now I think she might be hiding the muscle twitches but have no way of telling. She doesn't twitch while she's asleep.
Does anyone know what it could be? Could it be a magnesium deficiency or something worse? Please help, I'm worried.

moreResolved Question: Whats wrong with me??
I'm 14, and lately I have been having these symptoms in the past month and a half or so(although I am growing quite quickly lately, i know they are not growing pains as they are just nothing like I have ever had before):
- Mild bone pains in the upper back (spine) and legs, occasionally arms.
- Mild muscle pains in the abdomen and legs, occasionally arms. Sometimes its more a tickle-type pain.
- Sometimes feeling tired, but this may be due to a lack of sleep.
- Rarely (but more often than usual) having mild numbness in my hands.
- Also some very mild pain in the bone of my forehead (Its not my brain, I can tell its the bone), although this is the rarest symptom.
My best guess is a mineral deficiency of either calcium/zinc/magnesium or the likes of them. I don't think its anything serious though. My diet isn't great so a mineral deficiency may be likely.Oh and that last symptom I wrote looked quite bad, but its just like a tickle type pain which is similar to the bone one, which is not always on the forhead, it rarely is. Probably only happened 3/4 times. Also the pains usually last about 5 minutes or so, but the back pains are longer.
moreVoting Question: What Metabolic disorder do I have?
What metabolic disorder do I have?
I'm a 22 year old African American Male. Ever since 14 I've had major problems metabolizing CARBs, PROTEIN, and FAT properly. Through the years, the problem has evolved tremendously. But this is the state of the condition now (I'll give a history of the condition later, including a little family history).
I seem to need a very specific amount of CARBs, PROTEIN, and FAT everyday (by the gram), depending on my level of physical activity and/or how much muscle mass I have at the time. Being off by a few grams leads to devestating symptoms.
My level of activity now is moderate (no exercise but lots of walking and moving and performing on stage) and I'm 6' and about 170 lean (always been lean and can never gain FAT). At 190 pounds lean with regular weight training exercises (back in 2006), I have needed needed double and triple the amounts I report below.
Morning - I usually wake up VERY hungry and slightly weak. I need to immediately feed at least 30 grams of PROTEIN and about 100g CARBs. If I don't I will get weaker and extremely irritable within an hour, lots of problems thinking and generally being extremely unproductive and tired. Consuming some corn starch (time release CARBs) or cottage cheese (time release PROTEIN) the night before will buy me more time in the morning before symptoms of starvation show up.
Throughout the day - small feedings of CARBs throughout the day (at least 40g every hour) is best. An excess yields hyperglicemia symptoms of confusion, excess thirst, lack of coordination, etc. A set of pushups will usually correct the problem almost immediately, but sometimes too much activity will lead to more hunger and weakness (the flip side). I can take PROTEIN in large doses--as much as 60g without needing anymore PROTEIN for about 5 hours. I need about 20g to 30g of FAT through the day, but I can take it all in one shot (like a whole avocodo). I will usually notice a deficiency of FAT by the evening--confusion, dry mouth and throat, lethargy. An excess of FAT (in the 50g range) or PROTEIN (in the 70g in one sitting, or 200g that day) will lead to nothing more than some stomach discomfort if even that.
End of day - any deficiency of any caloric nutrient (PROTEIN, CARBs, FAT) will lead to extreme premature drowsiness. If I do fall asleep because of this, it will most likely lead to minor seizures (my leg will shake and I'd see weird visions sometimes, or just paralysis, for a few seconds over and over again until I fall asleep), and a very shallow sleep.
I've experienced stress induced seizures during the day time when I was either deficient in some nutrients or consumed an excess of CARBs. I'd uncontrolably destroy eveyrthing around me for about 5 seconds, followed by bitter weeping and emotional outbursts. It's usually brought on by a very minor confrontation with someone, which makes it very embarrassing to me and extremely puzzling to others. So far it's happened 10 times in my life and I hurt myself terribly one time (10 stiches needed for smashing ceramic to dust with brute force from bare hands). It wasn't until the 3rd time till I figured out it had less to do with anger and more to do with hypo or hyperglicemia.
Personal history:
When I was much younger (14 to 16) my main symptom was extreme thirst after every meal containing CARBs (much worse if it contained sugar), and I'd drink up to 3 gallons of water a day. The problem was virtually eliminated when I began an exercise regimen. I had to stop working out due to pain from Fibromyalgia, and the thirst problems came back. Then, when I was 15 I learned through natural dietery changes how to stop the pain (supplementing magnesium and avoiding wheat), and since then I've made it a point to stay active. At about 17 I read an article that suggests a high amount of PROTEIN and some FAT to fight off weakness from exercising. From then on I increased my intake and noticed huge differences in energy and I've never been able to get along without the right amounts everyday.
I also been diagnosed as having asthma, scoliosis, ADHD, and epilespy.
Family history:
My Dad has DIabetes (Type 2). His mom has Diabetes (type 2).
Anecdote:
Today my Dad saw me boiling a big bag of beans (which I do at least a few times a week). He said I should save the beans for tomorrow and have some corn meal instead (which he cooked). This showed me that he could not even begin to understand how much I need PROTEIN, which shows he does not have that problem at all and does not take my problem seriously.Attempts to diagnose:
So far no doctor has made any diagnosis. I've undergone tests for Diabetes and I'm definitely not a diabetic. One doctor says it's a pre diabetes stage. However I've never encountered anyone with as much need for PROTEIN as me, so I have no one to compare it to.
Lots of research has lead me to Glycogen storage disease and I must say type 0 is very very close to my to my condition. However it does not address the need for PROTEIN. I still tell people I have Glycogen storage disease since it's the closest thing so far, but believe it or not I have only encountered one doctor out of a dozen who was familiar with it, and it was during a short conversation where not much information could be exchanged.
I do not have any symptoms of sickle cell anemia according to my knowledge, but I do have a sickle cell trait. My anatomy and physiology teacher taught the class that PROTEIN deficiency can not be noticed until a few days, and FAT deficiency not until a few weeks. I told her this is not the case with myself. I notice a deficiency of each nutrient within a few hours of abstaining from either, and I experience a sense of relief as soon as I put the food containing that nutrient to my mouth. She did not take my inquiry seriously at all.
If this seems familiar to you, please share what you know.
If you say something dumb like "lol idk" to gain points, at least I'll thank you for the laugh.
moreResolved Question: How has conventional medicine harmed you?
I'll show you mine, if you show me yours :P
1) age 12-14 - I had horrible abdominal pains that were first diagnosed as 'ovulation pains' for which I was put on the pill, receiving no relief. Then the diagnosis was that I was looking for attention and was making it all up. I was referred to a psychiatrist who put me on antipsychotic drugs. The pain continued and I missed so much school as a result. Times when I would vomit from the pain, my mother took me to my doc so I could get a sick note for school, but the doctor's notes would read 'i see no evidence of dehydration, child needs more discipline at home'
Due to misdiagnosis I failed grade 8. I was so depressed and attempted suicide a few times. I was on so many drugs, for psychosis, depression, anxiety. My doc them suggested I live spend some time with my mother's family in 'the old country' for proper disciplining. During my time there I was not allowed any pain medication, EVER, since I was just making it up. It was hell.
Conclusion - after having been seen by at least 8 doctors, I decided to do my own research and came up with gallstones as a possibility. I approached a new doctor with this, she did an ultrasound and I indeed had stones.
2) Age 18. I saw my doctor for what I thought was a developing hunchback. She told me it was just fat. 19 years later a chiropractor saw this hump and told me my spine was deformed, likely due to the extremely tight muscles over top. After a few months of massage and chiropractic treatment, the deformity, as well as headaches, migraines and other associated symptoms, are all gone
3) Age 36 - severe muscle spasms, 100's per day, peripheral neuropathy, panic attacks, high blood pressure peaks, endocrine imbalance, torturous head tightness and a miscellany of other problems my MD diagnosed as 'stress', precribing me anti-anxiety meds, together with Lyrica from my neurologist. My naturopath ran the proper tests and found severe iron, calcium and magnesium deficiency, anemia, and chronic lead poisoning. My chiropractor worked on an area of of my spine that was associated with the nerves that caused many of the problems I was having, and massage therapists discovered and treated severely tight cranial and other fascia tissues.
Between my Naturopath, Chiropractor, Massage Therapist and my own Herbal therapies, My condition improved dramatically. While at the hands of my MD and Neurologist, I was in so much suffering I wanted to die on many occasions. If not for that dedicated team, and my views of health and healing, I might have ended up on drug after drug that never would address the core problems.
I have more stories, but would rather hear yours now.Mushroom Cloud, please provide scientific and reliable data to substantiate your claim that "When alt-med fails, many people are too humiliated to admit that they chose this kind of treatment, and many are plain dead" what is many? do you have a number? :DHannah, It was not 1 doctor, it was DOZENS spanning decades and various cities, ranging from family MD's, ER docs, and specialists such as psychiatrists, neurologist, cardiologist etc. The medical system has harmed me by training legions of practitioners to prescribe drugs to address symptoms without investing much effort into seeking the underlying cause. You agree the health service is crap, yet you no not provide any scientific data to back your claim that it is the best we have.rhianna, please learn to read. This question is not addressed to you. I certainly do not answer questions such as "why do you love Jesus," when I do not and it obviously does not pertain to me. I believe I now understand why you do not acknowledge the scientific evidence validating many of the natural therapies you dismiss as quackery, perhaps you just need to brush up on your reading skills, since you have clearly demonstrated yourself to be challenged in these regards.Your reasoning lacks both logic and truth. If I had wanted to know about people's successes with conventional medicine I would have a) asked for that information b) asked for that information in its appropriate category. But you already knew that :) Would you like to now answer how Jesus has saved your life? It would be equally as relevant to my question. Now that I see that you are not interested in answering questions as asked, and prefer to project your own ideas into others' questions, (narcissism? delusions?), I will be sure to simply ignore you in the future as you obviously have no intention of offering relevant responses, opting rather to offer answers to questions you think should have been asked instead. lol. so sad.
moreResolved Question: Is it normal to feel very weak before each meal and somewhat weak throughout the day, except in the evening?
About 1.5 hrs before lunch time, I start to feel very weak. If I eat lunch I feel not so bad, but if I delay more I feel as if I was going to faint. I can't concentrate well. My muscles shake. When I'm all shaking I eat a very large portion so I get indigestion and end up all tired. In addition to that I drink like 9-12 glasses of water a day (but because I live on a 100 F degree weather). I stress a lot at work though. I'm 12 lbs overweight and no time to exercise. Is this some sort of mineral deficiency? Iron? Chromium? Magnesium? Or a vitamin deficiency/poor absorption? B12? Any others?
moreVoting Question: fasciculations/muscle twitches, medical opinion please?
Hello, my name is Alex, 17 years old. For the past 2 weeks i've been annoyed and freaked out by muscle twitches all around my body. My grandfather had ALS and died in 2003 and I am EXTREMELY scared that i could have it too. Since my family does now know anyone else that had this condition in our bloodline, i think he didn't suffer from familial ALS. my twitches are basically everywhere. biceps, LEFT eyelid (only left), stomach, arches of feet, back , never on the fingers, but MOSTLY are in my legs, knee area, calves, femur area ,and those are the most annoying because they are very persistent, and almost constant. i get them more at night only when muscles are relaxed. i do not have muscle cramps nor experience any kind of pain. but the fear of having ALS terrifies me. After what i've seen my garndfather become from the man he was..
id also like to ask. if grandpa had non familial ALS, is there a chance that i could get it? or does that only happen in familial type? i've also read that calcium and magnesium deficiency can cause fasciculations , so ive taken some calcium-magnesium pills for about 4 days now, and still, nothing has changed. i also experience shakiness in my hands, for example when i drink water from a cup , i sometimes shake it when i put it down , dunno, maybe its because i crack my knuckles A LOT. as for WEAKNESS and loss of strength, no change i believe. i do not feel weak , i can do about 40 push ups and have no balance problems. but still, the persistent twitches have been annoying me for only 2 weeks or so. i've given you as many details as i could think of and hope you can help me in describing more about ALS , and what i can do to treat my fasciculations. thank you
moreResolved Question: Has anyone ever had severe muscle twitching?
I had a CBC done, and that came out normal. It did not show any diet deficiencies. However, I notice that when I drink Orange Juice the twitching subsides. Also, I tried Magnesium and that helps a little bit as well. As soon as I stop taking it though the twitching gets really bad again.I'm 25 years old. I woke up one morning in the middle of November with severe muscle twitching all over my body. It has not stopped since. Before this started, i was working out alot, lifting heavy weights. I was also taking a few Motrin everyday for about 2 months because I was having dental work done. I'm waiting to see a doctor, but has anyone had this before. My hands and fingers even move involuntarily.I have hypothyroidism, but that is under control with hormone replacement. I do also have a history of Hypoglycemia.
moreResolved Question: Vitamin D or D3 for Deficiency?
I've been having multiple symptoms for about 9 months that I asked questions about on here b/c no one seems to know what exactly are causing my symptoms. My doc told me today that after trying almost everything (aside from a cat scan that I'm due to have) we are now at the "end of the line" with regard to coming up with a diagnosis.
He did state however that my vitamin D test came back quite low and suggested I take 1000IU twice per day. He didn't give me a specific brand to take so wondering if anyone has any recommendations and if I should be looking for regular Vitamin D or Vitamin D3? Does it matter? Also, is it good to take magnesium too with a Vitamin D supplement? I'm in search of a good Liquid multivitamin too.
Some of my symptoms include, chronic fatigue, muscle and joint pain, headaches, irritability, and mood swings, and night sweats.
PS. I stay indoors practically all day. I don't go out in the sun that much at all. I never knew the importance of this until I read about the causes of a vitamin D deficiency.
moreResolved Question: What can cause tinnitus (aside from loud sounds)?
So, I have a ringing in one ear around 4 kHz, and slightly reduced sensitivity to frequencies around that range as well (though it may be a result of the ringing masking that range). The average person probably wouldn't notice the small change, but as a musician and a sound technician, I notice it. Though I do listen to loud music, I also bear OSHA standards in mind, as well as the common sense to turn it down if it hurts. I mix live music around 90-95 dB(A), and at about the same volume in my car. In the rare cases I go to concerts, I always bring ear plugs. (I learned the first time!) Given all that, there is only a small window of time before I started taking precautions that damage could've resulted from sound. I've never left any music-related event with ringing in my ears that I can remember.
So more about this, there's not just ringing, but heightened sensitivity to spontaneous sounds (tearing paper from a spiral notebook slowly, or water tinkling) that cause my ear to sort of pulsate in direct response to the sound. Strangely, that sensitivity seems to be absent in music, as it only seems to appear when the sound is spontaneous out of near-complete silence. Additionally, I've noticed increased physical sensitivity, and decreased ear wax production (as compared to my other ear). If I were to pull my ears gently up or down, it might hurt one. Also of interest is that it sometimes pops somewhere inside, which can't be good. This has been ongoing for a couple years now, and hasn't really gotten any worse. I still have great hearing in general, but I often find myself trying to listen with my other ear to quieter sounds. Also noticed that my ear canal seems slightly smaller. I don't know if it's always been that way or not.
I'm kind of suspecting *maybe* a magnesium deficiency. I also have small muscle twitches in random places, particularly my arms or legs, that I read might be caused from magnesium deficiency. I thought of giving supplements a try to see what happens, but how much is too much?
I wondered if anyone else might've had a similar experience.
moreResolved Question: Possible Causes for Random Muscle Twitches All Over My Body...?
I have a long history of "migratory paresthesias" as my neurologist refers to them. When I was around 14 years old I started getting strange sensations all over my body. I would feel numb & tingly, or like my limbs were heavy and harder to move for no apparent reason. I had an extensive work up including an MRI, Spinal Tap, EMG, & various bloodwork tests. I even took a psychological test to determine how susceptible I was to "the power of suggestion" to rule out if I was a hypochondriac (from what I understand) and it came back normal. Anyhow, an explanation for my symptoms was never given. They seemed to dissappear for several years, and then come and go. It mainly involves weakness on the right side of my body. I can still move fine, but my right arm and leg feel weaker and heavier to move. I have come to terms with the fact that I will probably never get an explanation for this symptom, but recently, I gave birth to my first child. He is seven months old now, and ever since I have been getting random muscle twitches all over my body. I have been following up with my neurologist and had another MRI & EMG to rule out diseases like Lou Gherig's/MS. Ironically, my mother was recently diagnosed with MS in the last few years, but, as the doctor stated "You look good on paper", and there is no evidence of any neurological disease. They have put me on Clonazepan 3X a day which seemed to help at first but lately the twitching is getting worse, even after the dose was just increased a month ago. Though my symptoms do not limit my abilities to do anything at present, they are an annoyance and scare me, particularly since my mother does have MS. Does anyone know what might cause these random twitches/spasms? I was checked for a magnesium deficiency and was told this was not the problem. Are there any other woman who have experienced these twitches after having a baby? Any advice would be much appreciated. I do follow up with my neurologist every few months, so I feel at this point it would be pointless to make yet another appt to go in if I can get advice from anyone else who may know the cause of my "twitchiness"....Thank you!
moreResolved Question: How can I prevent and treat calf muscle cramps? (please see details)?
Sometimes just upon waking I have a horrible cramp in my left calf. Pulling my toes forward doesn't stop it. It lasts at least a full minute and hurts like heck. Then the muscle is sore all week. I had a cramp Monday morning and it still aches. I'm almost certain I do not have a magnesium or any other vitamin or mineral deficiency. I think it happens sometimes if I wear shoes with any bit of heel.
moreResolved Question: Does anyone else have to take magnesium and get relief for several health issues?
I am in the process of still trying to find out what is going on with my own health with my new physician. Where I used to live I had a Magnesium deficiency on a couple occasions and was hypokalemic. I did not take any supplementation at that time. In the last six months I have been taking supplements on my own for relief of several symptoms that had plagued me for years. My blood tests have been normal for electrolytes since I take supplements on a regular basis. At one point, I was falling down, having panic attacks, weak, and still battle this with tremor, muscle twitching, cramping, etc. I also had IBS for years. I suffered pain all the time, and still do battle with this. However...the magnesium itself seems to be the culprit. Have any of you had great physical and mental relief at all from just a supplement? When I can afford it I take natural calm or slow mag.
PeaceOh and I forgot to add. I also had what looked to be seizures even though they were not. My heart beat goes bananas and I get weak and depressed with much fatigue. I can tolerate very high amounts up to 1200-1400 mg elemental a day if need be without having to run to the bathroom. It is good, but frustrating not knowing what is wrong.I could not even hardly walk anymore a little over two years ago. I was falling every ten steps or so and this actually caused me to mess up my back. I am sorry your mom is having trouble too. A lot of jobs make it hard for people to be able to go to the doctor and if you need surgery you are screwed. Hope she feels better. Thanks...Iodine deficiency and folic acid? I didn't know there was an iodine deficiency. I seriously have no problems with IBS anymore since taking the magnesium. I get really sick (weak, funny heart rate, etc) when I am not taking it after so many days. I do not have to take such a high amount all the time. I do take the citrate form in Natural Calm. Oxide doesn't work as well for me. I also am on prescription Vitamin D. Thanks again to all those who have answered so far. This is really a big issue for me.
moreResolved Question: Severe spasms over entire body, what could it be?
For the last few weeks I have been suffering with unusually bad pains and fatigue all over my body, to the point where I cannot go through the day without feeling really tensed to the point where I dont have a good control of my muscles. It is usually better in the morning and peaks in the afternoon and then gets somewhat better towards the evening. It started with just severe pain on the side of my knee, so i couldn't run. Then I started getting muscle aches on the same side but now in the back, shoulder, and neck. Then my stomach cramped up real bad and was hurting a lot and my whole body was just weak. Now everything is tense, including the stomach, I don't feel like eating, breathing is somewhat difficult, I feel dizzy and every muslce is either really cramped or tired. Despite not being hungry I still force myself to eat a normal and complete diet, so I believe vitamin and magnesium deficiency is out of the question. What can this possibly be?FYI, Im not on any sort of medication, not even birth control, vitamins, or anything else, so anything meds related could be ruled out.

moreResolved Question: Depression? Magnesium?
I'm just going to list my symptoms because my computer messed up my previous response... I'm 15 btw)
Fatigue (generally at school but in my legs as well)
Muscle spasms (Not severe, in my calves and feet)
Fogginess
Loss of appetite (I still make myself eat 3 meals, is that healthy?)
Loss of sleep
Sleep paralysis (not often)
Hand weakness (similar to morning hands, when you have a weak grip, however its not that severe anymore)
Limited speech (not as social)
Very mild anxiety
Upset stomach
I know that magnesium deficiency is a link to depression, and I have had some of the symptoms (the muscle spasms, occasional sensitivity to hearing)
Anyone know anything about magnesium intake (foods?) Or depression. I've experienced mostly the physical symptoms.
Now hyperthyroid is in my family, but I do not carry all the symptoms, I believe only fatigue
moreResolved Question: What causes muscle spasms, and are they harmful?
I've recently started working out for the first time in a few years. I am obese @ 5'8" and 285 lbs. But after i do 20-40 crunches, my ab muscles tighten and contract near to the point that i can't breathe. It's a scary feeling. is this something that could be serious? Before i started working out (in the past 2 months) i have also changed my diet, to more fruits, veggies and chicken and fish. so i don't think it would be a potassium or magnesium deficiency.
moreResolved Question: Calcium Deficiency?
For four months I have been going to therapy for both of my wrists and knees because two general physicans had diagnosed me with sprained tendons, but I went to a chiropractor (whom my mom has been going to for the last 9 years) last week and other than my discs being somewhat out of place, he said I have calcium deficiency. That was 3 weeks ago, and since then he's sold me calcium supplements (calcium citrate, magnesium and a whole lotta other stuff in the tablets) to take to ease my muscle tightness. My back, neck, and shoulders are incredibly stiff, but my main concern are my knees and wrists. These past months I've refrained from using them too much, but my forearm and calf muscles are still incredibly tense and pulling on my joints to the point of limited use and pain. I see my chiro once a week now, but I havent been able to ask him about a band of muscle right above the side of my knee that twitches constantly. Could calcium deficiency be causing this extreme muslce tightness?I'll be going to my primary care physician (family doctor, not the 2 different physical therapy offices I mentioned ealier) this saturday and getting a blood test done and tell her about my symptoms and maybe she can evaluate them. Also, i'm 16 so the chiro has told me that I need about 1300 mg calcium, and I checked just in case. I'm not drinking much milk now that I'm taking the tablets, but I don't want to OD and develop problems so I'll be taking enough tablets for about 900 mg. What I really want to know is can calcium deficiency cause all the symptoms above? I just want some assurance, even if my chiro got it wrong and its not calcium def.
