Welcome to Deficiency Of Calcium In The Questions and Answers

Open Question: Am I taking too much iron?

I take iron supplements to treat my iron deficiency anemia and recently started taking children's calcium gummy bear vitamins. I read the label of the gummy vitamins and it didn't say there was iron in it (at least I didn't see) but I'm still kind of worried. lol I'm 16 years old so the children's vitamins probably don't do much but still.Shoot, I accidentally put this in the wrong category. :\ more

Open Question: How do you tell if a puppy is a true Papillon?

I've been looking at getting a Papillon puppy, the pups I see at shelters I honestly can't tell if they're Papillons or not and half the time shelters can't either. And then some of the pups I see at breeders I'm not even sure because they look more like something else than Papillons. Can someone give me input please? http://skyviewkennel.net/papillon.htm http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/17257183 I live south of Wichita, KS and I cannot justify spending more than $500 for a dog, so, unfortunately there are only two breeders in my area I've been able to find, one in Oklahoma and the other up by Manhattan KS (sky view). But Sky View doesn't have any pictures of the parents on their website and a lot of the puppies have droopy ears, most pap pups I see have the big erect ears even when puppies, I know when they teeth if they have a calcium deficiency their ears will droop. And my fiance even looked at them and said they couldn't be pure Papillons. So how do I tell if a Papillon is a true Papillon just by seeing the puppy? People can very well lie and show me two beautiful parents and them not be the true parents, and I don't see why they couldn't lie on a Pedigree also. more

Resolved Question: Has anyone had success losing weight by adding Vitamin D and Calcium supplements?

I'm lactose intolerant and don't eat much dairy, so my doctor thinks I might be vitamin D deficient. I know that vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium, and I've heard that calcium and D taken together can facilitate weight loss (and that a vitamin D deficiency can cause weight gain). I have extra weight that appeared suddenly and I can't get rid of it (it's not a medical problem; I've had my thyroid checked). Does anyone have experience with losing weight after taking calcium and/or vitamin D?@Ash: I'm lactose intolerant. That's why I don't drink milk, and that's why I have a calcium and vitamin D deficiency. I've read studies regarding calcium and cancer, and I disagree with your statement. But my actual question still stands unanswered.@Ash again: Thank you for the information, but none of it answers my question. more

Resolved Question: Really bad period pains?

Hiya, I highly doubt I'm going to get anything new out of this... but I figured I'd try and hope for the best (: It's horrific. Honestly, it's not just me being a sissy.. it's much worse than any time I've ever gotten food poisoning, or sick... it's probably one of the worst pains i've ever felt in my life. I get headaches, horrible nausea, and *really* bad cramps. I get stuck in the tub (I take baths when it gets bad, for the hot water), for hours because I'm not able to stand up or walk due to the pain. Pain killers (such as ibuprofen), don't work. Neither does peppermint, or protein... I use heat a lot (either taking a hot bath, or applying a hot pack), which helps a little. Midol doesn't work, nor exercise (most of the time that's not any sort of option either). I've tried aromatherapy, changing my diet before/during my period to leave out caffeine (which I've heard can aggravate cramps), and large amounts of sugar or salt. I've tried teas, different natural remedies, like putting blackstrap molasses in water with some honey to make a tea, which does help a little with cramps/feeling weak/iron/calcium deficiency from losing blood, but doesn't help now that the pain is getting worse. I'm also taking oral contraceptives to help with lighter/shorter periods, but that hasn't helped either. The good thing about them is that im taking a kind which is safe to control periods with, so I only have a period every 3 months now... The problem is, even with this the pain is unbearable, and i'm unable to function enough to go to work, do anything mentally, or really do much of anything besides wait it out. Do you have any ideas or things I haven't tried? I'd really appreciate it... right now the people close to me are worried I might have Endemetriosis...which I don't really want to think about. Thanks...and i'm sorry for writing so much. =)Yes, you put a teaspoon or more of blackstrap molasses in hot-warm water. If you don't like the bitterness, you can add honey. It makes a tea by itself, really..not literally, but not sure what else you could call it (: Blackstrap molasses is full of calcium, and iron... and you lose a lot of iron with blood, so it helps so you don't feel so weak/lightheaded from blood loss. It's also really good for growing pains because of the calcium... (: more

Voting Question: Is this a bone, ligament or nerve problem in my foot?

I am breaking in new soccer cleats. Two weeks ago after the first day of soccer there was a sharp almost cramping pain in my foot. Stretching it like you would a cramp made it worse. Walkin to the car was a nightmare. That went away the next day. After a game on Saturday after I took my cleat off the same thing happened. It has now faded to a dull pain when I press on the area and walk on it. The location is the base to mid shaft of my 5th metatarasal. That is the outside part where your foot gets wide. I am led to believe it is a stress fracture but my mom thinks it is a pinched nerve from my tight cleats or a ligament problem. After researching stress fractues in the 5th metatarsal I fit these attributes: woman with an inconsistant menstrul cycle flat feet my ankles roll outwords when I run (oversupination?) calcium deficiency growing teen please help me!!! more

Resolved Question: What vitamin deficiencies can cause the tongue to move independently?

The tongue starts to feel swollen and almost loose in the mouth, and seems to move around a bit. It happens every once in a while, seems to happen when eating, but it's not always the same foods that cause it. Not on any medication. Is it possible there is a vitamin deficiency, or a severe imbalance of vitamins such as too much calcium, too little magnesium? more

Resolved Question: Does anybody know any cures for feather-pecking in chickens?

We have three hybrid hens in our back garden who are nearly two years old. A few months ago, one of our hens (a ginger-y, typical looking hen) started to feather-peck the other two. She has pecked a lot of feathers from their lower backs and bottom area and their skin is starting to look quite red. We have tried lots of different solutions to stop her feather-pecking e.g. a bowl of yoghurt and sesame seeds each morning (we read that hens sometimes feather-peck due to calcium deficiency and the yoghurt and sesame seeds help with this but so far, it has not been that successful), letting them out into our garden for a 10 minute scratch around, spraying a special spray on the backs of the hens who are being pecked to deter the feather-pecker, etc. but none of these have cured the feather-pecking. A lot of websites and books suggest to separate the hens who are being feather-pecked but as two of our three hens are victims of the pecking, this is quite difficult. Does anybody know any definite cures or suggestions which has helped them or anybody they know with this problem? This would be really appreciated as we are now seriously considering getting rid of the feather-pecker! Thank you! more

Resolved Question: White spots on my nails?

The only time I have any milk during the day, is a bowl of it in the morning with my cereal, and occasionally have it with hot chocolate or tea, so maybe it could be a lack of calcium...but otherwise, my nails are really long and strong, my teeth are i good condition, and my hair is thick, although i have a lot of split ends......so I'm not sure... I've heard it could be zinc or an iron deficiency? What's the cause and how can i easily and effectively get rid of them? more

Voting Question: Strange neurological symptoms?

I'm a 16 year old female. So about a month ago I started having internal twitching in the gastro area. Then the twitching moved to my legs, feet, hands, arms, and head. Eventually this twitching, or "muscle fasciculations" stopped in the gastro area but continued in another area. It's like one random twitch every few seconds. Okay - so the twitches started slowing down but a few weeks later I experienced pressure/coldness on the right side of my head. I'd be in the sun and I could still feel that my right side of my head was a bit cold. So that went away after a week and I just felt the pressure the next day. After that there was nothing. I decided to visit my doctor and he said all of these symptoms were nothing and the muscle twitching was probably due to calcium deficiency (even though I had recent blood work done and my calcium levels are fine). So a week later, which is this week, the twitching is still here and I started feeling tingling in the left side of my head. I also experienced one sharp pain in the head a couple of days ago and I occasionally feel lesser pain. I booked a neuro appointment in a few weeks but I know I'm going to worry a lot in the meantime. Anyone have any clue to what all of this is? more

Voting Question: anyone has quick Peripheral Neuropathy pain relief for toes.?

I went to the doctor last week and they are checking my blood work to make sure I'm not diabetic (which i highly doubt bc of perfect blood sugar and cholesterol). However the symptoms have increase and my toe is tingling and becoming numb. I also have many symptoms of B vitamin deficiency (weight lost, cold hands and feet, muscle weakness, etc) so im taking them. I dont go to doctor again till thursday and i cant wait that long. Is there any pain medication i could take to relieve me. Im currently taking magnesium calcium, B complex, vitamin E, 6-8 glasses of water per day. And im exercising. I go to my first physical therapy session tomorrow but i wont be able to do anything if im in pain. Please tell me the best med and any other info if you know bc i just found out about neuropathy the other day. and i dont have time to be on computer much due to pain. Thanks in advance. more

Resolved Question: Why did my body freeze up while donating plasma?

Yesterday I went and donated plasma for the first time. I went through all the exams, etc, everything was fine. I'm in the 1st category, and my protein level was 8 out of 9. I went through my first cycle of giving and receiving, and there was a small air bubble in the bag during my receiving, so they had to fix it. Then I started feeling this really warm sensation as I was starting the next cycle, it literally felt like I was peeing myself, but I wasn't. Then my lips started getting really numb, and my machine made a weird noise and everything went down hill from there. I started getting very faintish and was telling the nurses I was going to faint, then my chest got really tight and I couldn't breathe, and then my body just froze up, my hands were stiff and locked in position, I couldn't move my legs, and when I spoke I had a lisp. This happened for about 5-10 min, then my hearing started going out and I couldn't hear anything for about 30 seconds, then the nurses gave me 3 tums and a glass of water and gave me my blood back and then took the IV out. I felt fine afterward. It was a very scary experience, and they didn't seem to know any details as to why it happened. They told me I should drink a glass of milk before I come in next time because it could have been that I didn't have enough calcium, but they didn't seem so sure! They also said they don't think it was a reaction to the anticoagulant because I would have had side effects on the first cycle and not the second one. I would just like to know why this happened, and if this can be a sign of calcium deficiency or what! It was extremely traumatic and I had like 4-5 nurses all over at me and they hardly told me anything. I want to keep donating plasma but am terrified because I don't want it to happen again. I'm 20 years old, female, about 135 lbs. I have a fairly good diet, I eat alot of meat, and ate a good meal before I went and donated but didn't have any milk. more

Resolved Question: White marks on your teeth (calcuim deposits or whatever their called)?

So, i've been reading about these white marks you can get on your teeth for quite some time now and everyone says they are from the same thing, which is too much fluoride as a child, or a calcium deficiency. If this is the case, then why do most people with this problem have or have had braces? I dont think its just a coincidence that every person who has had braces with this problem had too much fluoride as a child... this makes no sense to me. I was just wondering if someone could connect braces to the white marks on teeth somehow? and if your answer is that when you have braces you cant clean your teeth very well... I beleive your wrong because i had braces, and whenever i went to the densist they would tell me how well i took care of my teeth ( im kind of a freak about it) and i still have them ( their small... but they are there) and i think the whole calcium deficiency thing is a bunch of crap too... considering i drink so much milk i thought i was gonna get kidney stones So.... if anyone can tell me some other theory on how these white marks develop, how to get rid of them ( for under a million dollars lol) , and if they are in fact connected to braces, i would appreciate it. more

Resolved Question: Did you know that milk rather than give u calcium , leeches calcium from your body by the acid in it?

Cows milk is only meant for cows, but the taste of the creamy fat ,pulls humans into justifying it's benefits, especially about calcium. There is calcium in it ,but not available for humans as it has a high acid content, osteoporosis takes it out of you eventually. The proof being, only westerners have such a high rate of Ostioparosis in the world. Asians are 80% intolerant to milk and it's by products and don't use it. The don't have the bone trouble we get. The milk board put the story out that it is good for you to make money ,just as the meat board did the same with the protein scare in the 70's and l have never met anyone with protein deficiency , have you?Been vegan comp sportsman for 36 years.and lived very healthy without any animal products. Still strong and fast at nearly 60 yrs old now. So why so much justification for killing animals???l had to laugh cow girl! first answer was agreed, yours was wheres your proof? and l just gave you some and l am proof also, ran35,000 kms as a marathon runner and cycled around Australia [14,000plus kms] all on vegan, but do some google research. At least the ingnoring truth answer that follows yours [taste is enough reason for me] is an honest answer. Why is your name cow girl? lol. You like them so much lo suppose? more

Resolved Question: Has anyone had any problems with the "New" Advantix?

I noticed that Advantix had a package change recently. I have used Advantix on my dachshunds for several years with outstanding results. Until the latest dose in new packaging. My dogs had to be taken to the vet for hot-spots from flea bites. I have pulled ticks off of both of them since! I am so mad! I paid too much for it to not work! While talking with my vet(and several people in vet care), I was told there has been mass exodus from Advantix for the same reasons. And, I have heard rumors that the government is about to crack down on flea and tick meds due to several pet deaths from using cheaper o.t.c. flea meds like Hartz. So Advantix, and all other companies have changed the formula for the upcoming stricter guidelines. Causing many people to seek out other methods. I now have my babies on Comfortis(spinosad), an oral monthly flea medication. It works well, and is rather inexpensive but leaves ticks and mosquito's uncontrolled. Does anyone have any references for tick, and mosquito control? I will NEVER use flea/tick collars! It is borderline inhumane! I don't care what anyone says! YOU wear a necklace of pure poison and see how YOU feel wearing it! No "Wash your pet with Dawn" answers please! I would never torture them that way! It has a Degreaser in it that robs animals of the natural oils in their skin needed for absorption of vitamin D. So, if you want your pet to have a calcium deficiency, keep washing them in Dawn! My pets thank you for any help in advance! more

Voting Question: Why do I keep getting stress reactions/fractures in my tibias?

I have for the past three years dealt with stress fractures and reactions. i played high level volleyball in the fall, got stress fractures, sat the rest of the year. Sophomore year- had to take it easy bc shins had fractures and now this summer after being in a boot for almost 4 months they are back... i am not calcium deficient, vitamin d is good, on a multi vitamin for my iron deficiency, was taking the workouts VERY light compared to the six hour volleyball practices, no distance, and shin pain and BAM! MRI shows stress reaction with previous spots healed, after doing basically nothing. Mystery part- my shin muscles are in perfect shape, same with core. So basically the pressure goes right to my bone instead of muscles or something. please help if you know anything... i am also really tall and athletic build if that helps- no eating disorders or anything more

Resolved Question: Who is the author of this and what year was it published?

How to Give vitamins to Chickens? Calcium. Calcium is needed by laying hens to form strong, sturdy eggshells. Hens without proper amounts of calcium lay thin-shelled eggs, or eggs with no shell at all! The amount of calcium a hen needs varies with her age, diet, health, breed, and size. Older hens need more calcium than their younger counterparts, and hens in hot weather need extra calcium concentrations in their feed since they are eating less due to the heat and might not be getting all the calcium they need. Since eggshells consist mostly of calcium carbonate, oyster shells and ground up limestone are good sources of supplementary calcium. Make sure you are not purchasing dolomite limestone, since this is harmful to egg production! Salt. Be extremely careful when giving chickens this occasionally fatal supplement! Most feeds have sufficient amounts of salt, so supplements of this should not be needed. Although minute amounts of salt are vital for a chicken's health, too much salt given to a flock when there is not enough water available can be poisonous. In warm weather, be sure that water dishes remain full, and in winter make sure that water does not freeze (or remove salt supplements from feed). Phosphorous. This supplement is needed so that the chickens can metabolize calcium (and calcium is likewise needed for the proper digestion of phosphorous). Range fed chickens do get phosphorus from beetles, but they probably don't get enough. Grit. Since chickens don't have any teeth, this important supplement is needed for proper digestion. Grit is usually sold as small pebbles or large grains of sand. These hard objects are eaten by the chickens and lodged in their gizzard. When grains, grass, and other fibrous/hard vegetation are eaten, it passes through the rocks in the gizzard where it is ground up between the stone (much like teeth). Grit should always be available, even if you're not feeding the flock heavily with grains and vegetables. Free-ranged chickens shouldn't need this supplement. Vitamin D. This vitamin is related to the assimilation of calcium and phosphorus and is needed for proper egg production. Deficiencies cause weak, thin eggshells. Vitamin D is found in cod liver oil and plenty of sunlight. Although this is a crucial vitamin, you shouldn't need to feed extra amounts unless your chickens aren't getting enough via sunlight or their feed. Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for good hatch-ability and chick viability (attention chicken breeders!). It comes from fresh grass and other vegetation, yellow corn, and cod liver oil. Most feeds include proper amounts of this. Riboflavin. This is one of the B vitamins and is often deficient in normal poultry feeds. If you are a breeder, deficiency of this vitamin causes embryo death during the early stages of incubation. This important vitamin is found in dairy products, yeast, liver, and plenty of leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E. Needed for proper health and protection from diseases, vitamin E is found in fresh greens, wheat germ oil, and whole grains (such as oats, corn, wheat, barley, etc.) As you can see, the majority of the vitamins needed by chickens are found in sunlight and fresh greens. This is why free ranged chickens (or chickens in confined-free-range-systems) are so healthy. Plenty of clean air, fresh food, sunlight, and green veggies along with a few choice supplements should keep your chickens living as long as Methuselah! Resolved Question: Possible causes of kidney area and abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, and fatigue?

Please don't just tell me to see a doctor! I've been going to the doctor for a month now and so far they have no idea what's wrong with me. I'm waiting on some more test results, but hoping that somebody on here may have had similar issues that could shed some light on the situation. Here are my symptoms: -Kidney area pain on the right side (Originally thought it was a kidney stone, but all tests show my kidneys are fine) -Abdominal pain also on the right side slightly above and inward of my hip bone -Very small amount of blood in my urine -Slightly elevated white blood cell count and higher levels of calcium (still within "normal" range) -Nausea which occasionally turns in to vomiting -Fatigue (Sometimes mild, sometimes feels like mono) -Very small, itchy bug-bite type things all over my body (Possibly unrelated. I haven't given my dogs a flea treatment in awhile, but my husband doesn't have any "bites") Most of these symptoms come and go as far as extremity. It seems like each day, or portion of the day a different symptom is the dominant issue and the others are barely noticeable. Sometimes they all come on together. Like I said, this has been going on for a month now, and I'm starting to get scared because of where the pain is and the vomiting. NOT good signs... About two weeks before this started, I was diagnosed with a sever Vitamin D deficiency, my doctor said it was the second lowest she'd ever seen! They had me taking 50,000 UI of vitamin D once a week, they have since told me to stop, but my problems are still occurring. I have had an x-ray, CT Scan and ultrasound to search my abdomen and everything looks normal. No inflammation, no stones. I've had a 24 hour urine collection, as well as a LOT of blood tests (sorry don't know what they were all for) but everything is normal. I am currently waiting on test results for Hyperparathyroidism. I have been doing a lot of my own research and everything I've found, keeps pointing me to this, so I requested the doctor to run the tests. I was laid off last week and my insurance is only good until the end of the month, so on my next appointment I want to go in with a list of things for them to check before my insurance is up, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!Thank you so much for the quick response! I forgot to mention that before all this stuff started, the doctor thought I had an ovarian cyst... I've now had two ultrasounds to look for that and I'm waiting on the results.Just got test results... No Hyperparathyroidism, and I have an ovarian cyst, but it's pimple sized. The doctor said it's so small that they wouldn't bother removing it and it's not causing my current issues. more

Resolved Question: I'll share my tricks to stay on a diet.(10 Points) Do you have any good or surprising tricks to stay on track?

When I am ready to give up I have 12 oz. of 2% chocolate milk with 2 teaspoons of fiber powder and a bag of low fat popped corn. The choc milk is 240 calories 12 grams protein, loaded with calcium. The popped corn 122 calories. I think the popcorn is delicious with chocolate milk and it takes a while to eat so my brain knows it has been fed before I am done eating, unlike with junk food that takes only a minute to wolf down, so you have another. I like knowing there is something out of this world good to eat and I am not derailed from my diet. In the morning I drink 12 oz water with 2 tablespoons lemon and fiber to which helps the digestive system and elimination as well as detoxing my body. It has made all the difference for me. Take a good supplement your thyroid needs to be well nourished to work and if it doesn't work you'll get fat. (I did) Take vitamin D. I had a deficiency and the doctor told me to get 2,000 I.U. daily it must be D3, cholecalciferol to be absorbed by the body. Most overweight people are deficient. Lastly I try to get 20 minutes sun, no sunscreen. Good for mood, motivation, appearance & vit. D. And check your hormones if you can't budge your weight. WHAT HAVE YOU GOT FOR ME? more

Resolved Question: A person, group, or society that will take in a sick desert tortoise?

Recently, my desert tortoise has became very sick with calcium deficiency. I have read up information on the internet of what should be done, and what should be done is to take it to a vet. I would take the tortoise to the vet, but I do not have the money to do so. And I do not have the time to give it a proper home, shelter, etc. I think it will be better off with someone else. I live in Southern California, in the Irvine (Orange County) area. If someone could answer this question, it would be great. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Help! I can't see any way out of this situation :( ?

Hi there, I have a little 14.2hh, 12 year old mare. My son has outgrown her and wants to move onto horses soon. I have a problem though. About 8 months ago we discovered that she was not jumping correctly so we had the vet come out and he recommended we get her hocks xrayed. We did this just before Christmas and it was shown that she had a calcium and phosphorus deficiency. She received treatment for this and had 3 months off work. She was vetted sound after this and remained taking a calcium supplement(which she has to take for the rest of her life) and was back to jumping normally again. Now that my son has outgrown her I had decided to sell her. A family came to look at her last week and just fell in love with her, but when it came to the vetting she showed lameness after the flexion test. I don't know what to do now. The vet said that her hocks will prob. be fine for dressage and small jumps, though no one is going to buy an unsound horse. She has never shown to be lame other than the flexion tests in the 3 years I have had her. As a very last resort I am considering putting her in foal but then I will still have an unsound pony a year or two down the line again. I don't know what to do, I can't see any other option here. I am an honest person and I will not deceive anyone. Does anyone else out there have any ideas? more

Voting Question: Ankylosis - Theory for the cause!?

Hi, I've just received a letter from the Gastroenterologist department saying that some abdominal x-rays I had taken while I was in hospital being treated for a Colitis flare up shows Ankylosis of the SI joints and lumbar spine. I've done a little research on Google and Youtube to get an idea of what it means and I've discovered that the cause of the condition is unknown. I would like to hear from people with this condition and know of any thoughts or ideas you have on how you might have come across the condition. I also have Scoliosis which I was diagnosed with several years ago. My theory as to how many people get Ankylosis is that a bacterium called Microbacterium-anium-Paratubercolosis (MAP) is passed on to humans through cattle milk causing an inflammation of the Colon which can lead to a calcium deficiency eventually infecting the SI joints and lumbar spine. In my letter it also mentions that Ankylosis can occur in inflammatory bowel desease.... I know that MAP can cause Colitis and IBD and that taking Buscopan can also lead to IBD. Ankylosis, Colitis and IBD are all inflammatory conditions so they must be connected somehow, perhaps by the MAP. Does this sound like a plausible theory? Do you have a better theory? Thanks! I'm hoping that if we put our minds together we can learn alot more about Ankylosis. more

Resolved Question: Large red blood cells?

What additional tests should I have done if a second blood test confirms that my red blood cells are larger than normal? I don't eat much meat but I do eat salmon and trout so I don't see how I can have a Vitamin B12 deficiency. I also take several different vitamins and supplements a day: multi-vitamin, vitamin C, garlic, fish oil, calcium, magnesium, and acidophilus. I don't drink or smoke. What other tests should a doctor do to figure out why my red blood cells are this way? Could I just have larger "normal" cells than other people? However, I have had the CBC done several times in the last 5 years and no doctor ever flagged this as an issue. Right now, I am just having to get the CBC test repeated to see if it produces the same abnormal result. Plus, I am currently out of the United States in an area with limited medical care. Would this condition be harmful if I can't get to the bottom of it before I get back in 3 months? I read it can possibly relate to leukemia or thyroid disease or even cancer so I want to figure out what further tests are really necessary. The only other CBC results I have had flagged as "high" before, but only slightly elevated, was my bilyrubin level. more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with me, any ideas?

I have been having many symptoms that fall under the categories of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I have a vitamin d level of 4, my calcium level is just a tad low of 7.9, my albumin level is also just a little low of 2.9 and my c-reactive protein is really high of 41.23 From my cbc my mean corpuscular volume is a little low of 81.5, my mean corpuscular HGB is a little low of 26.6 my mean cor HGB conc is 32.7 and my red cell distribution width is a little high of 15.7 my band neutrophils is high of 6 and my sed rate has been fluxuating a lot between 22 to 41 my most recent was 22.My creatine kinase is only 10 as well. I just don't know what to do. I was put on a vitamin d pill of 50,000 iu once a week for two months. How long will it take to make my vitamin d levels go back to normal? I am just very frustrated. I went to one doctor and he told me to see a psychiatrist. But if I am making this up and just crazy than why are my blood levels screwy? This has been going on for over two months now and I am in complete exhaustion! One of my blood tests taken just a week before these results said I had an elevated white blood cell count on 14.7 I have three young children and can barely take care of them. I need help taking my showers from my husband because I lose my balance and get really dizzy. I have been falling a lot and I am not typically a clumsy person. My entire body just hurts like I was beaten on and all bruised but I am not literally bruised. My clothes even hurt for me to wear them like my socks, my bra, my jeans. I need help figuring out what to do. Something has to be wrong with me. This is not normal. I usually went to the gym three to four times a week for an hour and a half each time and now I can barely get around my house. If this is caused by my vitamin d deficiency than why did it just hit me now and so hard. Why wouldn't it slowly progress into this? I started out with a simple cold at the end of January and have been sick since. Any ideas? I need to know what is wrong with me and fast so it can get resolved. I also feel really swollen and gained 20 pounds in just over a week. Since then I lost just 7 pounds. I assume that it is all water weight since i have also lost my appetite. Any helpful ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am very worried and my anxiety and depression are taking over. more

Voting Question: 1 yr old bearded dragon not eating and pooping!?

I have a beardie and he is about 1 yr old. He is (or was) a HUGE eater and very spoiled and healthy. Sometimes up to 50 crickets a day, plus greens, plus the occasional pinkie. Over the last 2 weeks he has been acting strange. He is refusing to eat and he is not pooping. I took him to the vet last week because along with the not eating and pooping, he was going into his cave and his coloring was darkening, so I thought it was brumation. (BUT, he just didn't look right, so I took him) The vet looked him over and couldn't find anything wrong with him (she thought he was just hormonal). No impaction or calcium deficiency... So, she thought it could be worms and sent me home with meds to give him once a week for several weeks and orders to bathe him 1 time a day and force feed him 2 times a day (blended greens, carrots, strawberries, water )... He doesn't like to have his mouth forced open (who would) but likes the mixture and takes in 3-4 syringes of the blend. He has pooped once 2 days ago while in his bath, but nothing since. He STILL is acting weird! He is now laying under his basking light on the ground (and UVB) but doesn't move all day. He lets crickets crawl all over him (but will eat the occasional wax worm when I hand feed it to him)...and his lower eye lids look droopy... Do you think I'm worrying for nothing?? Do you think it is brumation and he will snap out of it?His UV/ UVB lights are only 2 months old and after about 30 mins I do take out the crickets. more

Resolved Question: Why do some people believe that the handicap are nothing more than a burden and should be terminated?

Apologies for this long post, but after I saw one poster's suggestion that we all should kill people with varying degrees of disability, I was just...stunned! I have to say something in my defense on this issue and I just want those people to see what I have to go through being handicapped--so they will know that it's not an easy thing. I was born a preemie with cerebral palsy; weighed in at 2 pounds 8 ounces. When I as a teenager, I diagnosed with a bi-polar disorder and ADD/ADHD. In the past 8 years? It's COPD, Vitamin D Deficiency Syndrome, Recurrent Calcium Stone Disease, Factor Five Leiden, an optic nerve degeneration disorder, and sleep apnea--among other things. My entire life from the get go was nothing but hardships, challenges, and failure. I didn't just stand by and let the world roll me over a good one. I eventually stood up for myself, I fought the good fight, and made something of my life--even though I still suffer from failing health. (Not as bad as Dennis Hopper's though.) And while I may not be a *major* contributor to our all important capitalist system of free market principles, I still have some value and importance in people's lives. Just not in terms of material wealth and money. But no matter how different we are born, or are saddled with either physical or mental problems, it doesn't mean that we should just be cast aside or want to see those afflicted killed out of social ignorance--because some people see people like me as a "burden", or fail to understand just what it is that makes people like myself wholly dependent on medical and government assistance. I just wish these same types would walk in my shoes for a day and see what I have to go through just to survive. What's it is like to have to use inhalers--because you can't breathe normally--or have to take blood-thinners because you have a malfunctioning clotting factor, or any of the other types of medications which regulates your high blood pressure, asthma, depression, and keeps the nerve sheaths in both eyes from disintegrating prematurely. (Though this will lead to eventual blindness--for now, I am lucky to still have my sight.) And to top it all off? A half dozen or more doctor appointments to deal with all these issues: Having to run all over town to get poked, prodded, scanned and blood drawn on time, or wired up like a guinea pig for a sleep study, x-rayed like crazy, BP checked on a monthly, vitals checked to make sure I'm still alive, weight checked to see if I've lost any more weight, and twice a year laser lithotripsy procedure for kidney stones--so the doctor in question can stick a stent up inside and give me all those wonderful pain pills afterward--leaving me without worries or fear. The pain, the suffering, *everything* that I have to go through. It's because I don't have many other choices. And it's no picnic neither. But even through all this, I keep going with a sense of humor because it's easier to look at my problems through a different window and realize how lucky I am to be cared for by so many people, than just be negative about my situation and blame others for things clearly out of my control. I couldn't been born normally like my two brothers, but I wasn't. And that's what makes me so special. Thoughts? more

Resolved Question: Vitamin D injections?

I have been diagnosed with high calcium levels, low vitamin D levels and high PTH (I don't know what this is, but the level is 106). The endocrinologist has prescribed vitamin D injections (300,000 units) every 3 months. I am really surprised that I am low in vitamin D as I eat loads of oily fish and spend at least an hour every day walking the dog - although I wear a high SPF in my face creams, I do get 'fresh air' to the rest of me! The reason I went to the doctor is that I am experiencing terrible pains all over my body, especially in my legs and down my back, nausea, headaches and heart palpitations. What can I expect these injections to achieve? Will the injections cure all my symptoms or might I have something else too? I can't believe I have a vitamin D deficiency when I have such a healthy diet and am a really outdoors person and I am amazed that this could have caused such severe symptoms. more

Resolved Question: how can i lose weight or size mass?

Hi, I own property and more on my own so I don’t have a great deal of money from week to week, my job has me at a desk for 8hrs, I exercise on average 3-4 mornings for an hour + 30mins 2-3 evenings a week, i’m FEMALE early 20’s ,5.10” on average 98-100kgs or roughly estimate of pounds (147-150 *I think*), I don’t want to and there is no way I could be a petite little thing but I would like to be a size or two smaller 15kgs lighter so my outside may match the person inside, I don’t have low self esteem or poor body image, I keep tabs on my measurements 45-44-48, I have most of my weight spread evenly in either an hourglass or rectangle shape, shoulders belly and saddle bag thighs. I’ve been exercising for 6 years solidly. I did weight lifting because I have a calcium deficiency practically cant absorb the stuff, so I was advised to do weights to build up bone density and hopefully lessen the risk of osteoporosis but had a personal trainer do 4 yrs of heavy weight lifting all two sets of 10 reps, 65kg bench press, 65kg lat pull downs, 35kg single arm lat pull downs, 400kg leg press >I am not joking< 170kg single leg press, you can imagine a lot of leg and back injury’s, I didn’t lose or gain weight, but was insanely strong and ate practically nothing, I changed my exercise and have spent two years doing only light weights and high intensity cardio bike/running/walking to try and lose weight and muscle but not the bone density, as for what I eat and drink, I cant afford much and tend to drink water, coffee and tea at work due to insane levels of stress, and a can of coke maybe every one or days in the work week, I drink water at home nothing else, If I get to eat breakfast and that’s maybe 2 days a week (I know its important to eat breakfast I just cant afford it time/money wise), my dad helps shout me brown bread sandwich with cheese and ham 4 days of the week, I get treated subway on a Monday just a six inch with salads chicken or hams. no lunch on sat or Sunday, dinner every night is what my mums been kind enough to throw out of her pantry, two slices of toast plain, sometimes with margarine and when really lucky vegemite, and rarely a cup a noodle soup once a week. I eat grilled meat n steamed veggies twice a week for dinner at my parents, I would have thought with so little food and such high exercise I would lose some form of weight, I don’t sleep well maybe 6hrs a night when I sleep, I have sleep aiding tablets for the last year, I feel I don’t sleep due to stress, but I use exercise as a stress relievers. I can’t eat any less without not actually eating, i’m not normally hungry, when I eat more I gain weight like a click of the fingers same with exercising less, I can’t seriously need that much more exercise either. I’ve had tests done and my thyroid is normal, blood pressure is normal *safe* I have low cholesterol and bmi of 32.4. I’ve done years of research on healthy diet, exercise for my body *and practiced them till I couldn’t afford to buy fresh food… or food at all*, tried weight watchers and failed to loose more then two kilos in 6 weeks. You can see where i’m coming from and I would really love to hear from others who’ve been like me but lost weight and size. more
