Resolved Question: Guinea pig dragging hind legs. Any help?

I have two male guinea pigs, Wallace and Grommit, that are about a year old. When I went to check on them this morning, I noticed that Grommit was dragging his hind legs around. He's moving around fine by dragging himself, he's eating and drinking normally, but his hind legs are just not working. He hasn't been dropped or fallen from any height. He doesn't squeal when I pick him up, so I don't think it's broken. I got the boys four days ago from a woman who was selling them. They are both fine, but Grommit's paralyzation just happened over night. He was running around the night before and now, his legs aren't working. He's trying to move them and they move a tad bit, but not completely. The woman who had the guinea pigs before had them in a wire bottom hutch type thing. Could that be part of the problem? I don't have them in that; I have them in a bigger, nicer cage. They also looked like they had never had their nails clipped before, which I promptly took care of. I've read that it might have something to do with calcium deficiency. Can I get calcium drops or medication at a pet store, or do I have to go to a vet for it? I'm just worried about the little guy. The guys are guinea pigs #4 and 5 for me, but I've never had the problem with paralyzation with the back legs before, so it's something new to me. Please help! I want my piggy all better. more

Resolved Question: Persistent Muscle Spasms, Elevated Blood Pressure and Feeling exhausted?

Does anyone have a clue why a 43 year old female would have painful spasms in the throat, back, and inside (maybe uterus or intestines) that have come slowly over time but now are horrible especially when I'm on my period. My blood pressure is really high 170/110 at the worst. Now prior to this episode it was 139/90 most of the time. I'm taking Altace 2x's a day but it never really seemed to do anything and I've been using it for a few years. I feel exhausted all the time and the constant pain is making me grumpy. I did have low ferritin and iron back in August and my GP convinced me go to the gastro who did an endoscopy/colonoscopy and found ulcers in the lower intestines. I was supposed to go back for a small bowel series but I didn't since the treatment for chron's and UC is the same. I tested negative for celiac disease but went on the gluten-free diet (along with the yeast free diet) and 30 years of IBS is now gone. I know this diet is limiting along with not being able to eat red meat or pork or milk. Could there be some deficiency causing this? I've been taking sublingual B12 (about 1000mcg), Calcium tablets 1000mg, and Vitamin D 2400 IU ( I was supposed to take 50,000 2x's a week for 6 weeks but the medicine caused extreme gastric distress so I had to buy some over the counter. I'm not taking enough). Also, I have tingling in my left arm that runs down to my index finger and thumb but it comes and goes and doesn't hurt, it's just odd. I went to my GP and an endo (my sister had thyroid cancer last year so she felt I needed to go). They both don't really find anything except low Vitamin D. I'm not sure how the iron and oxygen in the blood relates but I know I was really low in both. At first, I was out of range below but in the second test (at another lab I was in range but at the absolute bottom). My main issue is that when I go to see a doctor they ask me what I want them to check and I ask them to figure it out because I didn't go to medical school. If I don't throw out some suggestions they will just let me leave even with my bp that high. I don't have a problem with these doctors and don't say "switch doctors" because these are all new doctors who did the same thing the old ones did. It's just the way things seems to be. Can anyone give me some areas to investigate? I take responsibility for my health and I'm ok with doing some legwork to get to an answer. Thank you. more

i rescued a QH x Stock horse colt a few months ago with mild big head (caused by calcium deficiency) i have been adding DCP & apple cider vinegar to his feed. i was wondering if anyone knows other remedies to help the big head go down, as it is only in the early stages of the disease and is probably still reversible. thanks heaps! :) more

Resolved Question: Do I have a calcium deficiency?

For the past few days, my legs in particular have been extremely achy. My kneecap on my left leg would feel like, you know, when the top of your leg is in a bad position and you have to move it FAST? It's kind of like that, a little bit. And today at school, climbing the stairs was very painful and difficult, not to mention slow, on both legs. They've both been achy. It seems like I seem to always have menstrual cramps or something...it's happened a lot for like 10 days now, and gets worse while I'm eating, and it's not hunger, because the cramps still occur after I eat. My entire body just seems kind of weak. I've never liked milk in my life, and never drink it. Anyways, I'm worried that I might have a calcium deficiency. I'm not sure...what do you guys think? I'm 14. more

Resolved Question: Why do my nails look unhealthy?

My nails have been kind of flaky and clear (at the end) lately, and they bend pretty easily. I was told that it is due to a vitamin deficiency (not by a doctor), but I maintain a pretty healthy diet, though somewhat lacking in protein and calcium I guess. Is that the source of my problem? Do I just need to drink more milk and eat more red meat? Thanks, FF more

Voting Question: Very short dark line on fingers?

Not sure if this background information matters but I have fibromyalgia, and take a lot of medications although lately i have been relying on tylonel and ibuprofen because I do not have the money for medication. Since the change I was having white patches under my nails, but they went away (I just assumed it was a calcium deficiency or something). Today I noticed I have a short (about 1mm), thin dark (black?) marking on each my thumb, index, and middle fingers all on my right hand. They are all situated in the horizontal center and vertical top of the nailbed/nailplate but not extending past it (they are a good 1/2mm from the end of the nail where the skin no longers meets). Nothing happened to them to my knowledge, and besides those lines, all three nails look pretty much like the rest of my nails. I am just wondering if its normal or a result of medications, lack of medications, or something else. more

Resolved Question: How to know if I have Celiac disease - without insurance?

I no longer have insurance which is terrible timing. Please if you know anything about Celiac's PLEASE read!!! Sorry this is so long but any resources or directions other than a simple "symptoms list" would be great! I recently had a gallbladder attack and docs thought it was non-functioning and diseased, but it was tested and my gallbladder is actually OVER-active and the doctor saw no alarm for this other than stress (finishing my Master's degree and car broke down in same week). However, this also occurs in people with Celiac's, finding this out after doing my own research. I also have a huge tendency to form calcium kidney stones (2 surgeries and over 10 stones, I'm in my early 20s), and I also have KP, keratosis pilaris, which is a skin disorder thought to be caused by a vitamin A deficiency. I have been eating healthier and it has helped but only somewhat... I can't hardly drink beer anymore, even 2 of them cause pain and I used to be able to drink quite a few! Sometimes after I eat I can feel my gallbladder twitching. My CBC blood tests were normal, liver function good, white blood cell count slightly high, slightly low bilirubin (whatever that is) but overall everything looked good. Then why do I feel like crap!!?!? I feel as though I have a malabsorption problem, or could it be a simple food intolerance? Its hard for me to tell if I have a food intolerance because I feel really full after not eating much, and then feeling really hungry a few moments later... because of my gallbladder :( . Are there any "over the counter" or at home tests that can test for Celiac? Add'l info: I eliminated most of my kidney stones by cutting down on fast food, soda, and meat. I have always drank a lot of milk, and was actually told to drink more but I'd get sick if I did! I have been to 4 doctors all who raise their eyebrows, poke and prod, and then just tell me I'm "just stressed". I am already being treated for anxiety... more

Resolved Question: could i have osteoporosis?

I have a family history of it, i also suffer from PCOS. I keep breaking my bones. I've got a cast cos i've broke my foot and torn a ligament, but it's removable so i can do certain exercises. I've been taking it off at night cos i can't sleep with it on, and today all i did was stand up and my leg twisted and cracked. now there's a lump that's really painful when i touch it and it moves and scrapes and i'm in agony. Last night my bf just sat back on my arm and it cracked and since i can't move it. My hips are constantly cracking and popping and so are my wrists and knees. I'm only 19 and i'm getting really depressed with going to the hospital with broken bones. Is there anyway i can be tested for it? or anything else it can be? The only thing i know it isn't is a calcium deficiency, cos i'm always eating and drinking dairy and i take multi vitimins.I was in a RTA in 2001 and have had problems with my legs and ankles ever since. I have no 'cushioning' in between my ankle and knee joints, so they're constantly scraping together.I'm in the UK btw more

Voting Question: Weird stain on my toothh?

Ever since Kindergarten I can remember having this ugly stain on my left front tooth. I've gotten made fun of it for so long, and it honestly troubles me. I can't smile without covering my mouth, I talk low so it wont show, and I don't laugh in front of people. I can't figure out what it is, and I want it gone. Now, I come from a poor family, so special dental cleanings will not be able to be done. My mom told me since I was first born, she gave me fluoride water being heard that it's good for babies. Another thing I heard was that like the spots on your nails from calcium deficiency, it was like that except on my tooth. Please help me, I'm honestly troubled. :[ This is it, while it blends in there, in reality it pops out.(( Alright, yahoo won't let me post it, for some reason. )) Anyway any ideas what it could be? :/Mela, theres no need to get stereotypical here. Did I offend you in anyway with my question? I think not. Also, judging by your avatar,if we're being stereotypical, this could get very, very ugly. [: more

Resolved Question: Always worried for the dentist- help?

Hi, I am always worried for the dentist. Months before I start losing sleep and tear my self apart over the dentist. Whenever I go, there is something wrong with my teeth. I just got done with almost 3 years of orthodontia, and my parents don't want to pay for anything more as far as my teeth go. Last visit, I got my first tooth filled because of a calcium- enamel deficiency. My dentist told me to watch out for my other teeth because this would reoccur. Well, I am positive that I have another one, and have to go to the dentist in 1.5 months. I get enough calcium in my diet, and my parents are convinced that I had to get my last tooth filled because of a cavity. I brush my teeth very hard to the point of gums bleeding, I use mouth wash, but my teeth are turning black. My parents were REALLY upset when I got my first filling, but I got it when I was older, unlike my sister. My parents mouths are filled with fillings and crowns. I am worried that they will make me pay for the next filling, and I am afraid to tell them that I will have to get another. What can I do???? *btw, I am not convinced that my dentist did a good job of sealing my teeth as they came in, there are cracks in the sealent where I am having my problems. more

Resolved Question: Can calcium supplements destroy my body (im 17)?

As i said I'm 17, I've been taking calcium supplements for like a couple of years now.. I never really have any calcium deficiencies but I wanted to make sure because I never had lots of dairy. For a couple of months now, I've been noticing that my bones are like.. too long or something. I move my arm in circles and I can hear bones clicking. Could this be the calcium supplements not working properly? If I stop could it heal? My knees, hips&ankles also pop/crack a lot. Any suggestions? more

Resolved Question: Could I have something wrong with my kidneys?

I keep having pain in my kidneys. Not severe pain, but faint, uncomfortable pain and also I've noticed over the past several months that I don't urinate a forceful enough stream as I should. I went to a rheumatologist about 4 months ago (Not concerning this of course) because I had been having difficulty walking (pain especially when i first get up always) and she said I had arthritis and she found that I had a vitamin D deficiency. The reason my kidneys really concern me now is because I read that kidney problems can sometimes be the reason for vit. D deficiency. That coupled with urine output and kidney pain concerned me. Also, the fact that I was getting a lot of sunlight and calcium more than most people and I read that is primarily where your vit. d comes from and even a lot of people that do not get much of either do not have vitamin d deficiencies a lot of times. With the vitamin D prescription for 3 months my level is still low (24.1). I need to follow up with the doctor, but can anyone tell me if you think I'm having kidney disease of some sort? I've also had blurry vision the last year when I never did before but I thought that may be because I just turned 40. more

Resolved Question: Whats wrong with me??

I'm 14, and lately I have been having these symptoms in the past month and a half or so(although I am growing quite quickly lately, i know they are not growing pains as they are just nothing like I have ever had before): - Mild bone pains in the upper back (spine) and legs, occasionally arms. - Mild muscle pains in the abdomen and legs, occasionally arms. Sometimes its more a tickle-type pain. - Sometimes feeling tired, but this may be due to a lack of sleep. - Rarely (but more often than usual) having mild numbness in my hands. - Also some very mild pain in the bone of my forehead (Its not my brain, I can tell its the bone), although this is the rarest symptom. My best guess is a mineral deficiency of either calcium/zinc/magnesium or the likes of them. I don't think its anything serious though. My diet isn't great so a mineral deficiency may be likely.Oh and that last symptom I wrote looked quite bad, but its just like a tickle type pain which is similar to the bone one, which is not always on the forhead, it rarely is. Probably only happened 3/4 times. Also the pains usually last about 5 minutes or so, but the back pains are longer. more

Voting Question: What is the tan spot that looks like plaque on two of my teeth, but it is NOT plaque. Calcium deficiency?

They are two spots right along the gumline of my front two lower teeth. It appears to be plaque but nothing will remove it, so it looks more like a stain. However, it also appears to be corroding...any thoughts? Dentist in the future, but preliminary ideas first...The only reason I figured it wasn't plaque was because it does not come off with intense flossing or anything. I have not had any significant calcium (ie milk) in at least two months. Also, I am kind of obsessive about the cleanliness of my mouth which is why I am surprised it would be cavity. Also, when I scratch it with my nail it is rougher compared to the rest of the tooth. more

Resolved Question: Is this serious?????

I have calcium deficiency, and I litterally just took my first calcium (with vitimin K and D) supplement just now, but in the past few weeks (and now), I have been having very mild pains in my veins. This is often in my left thigh, but also on the slight right hand side of my chest. Is this related to it? Could it seriously harm me? It sounds like blood clots, Will it go away once my calcium levels have risen?Plus I'm 14, male, and quite small.I don't think I have that much calcium, and since I'm getting white stains on my teeth and stuff, thats usually an indicator of deficiency rather than the opposite. more

Voting Question: Horrible pain in my thighs?

Recently, I've been having a near-constant pain in my thighs. It feels more like a bone pain than a muscle pain. Whenever I walk or move, especially climbing stairs, there's a very strong sore pain shooting through the front of my thighs. My mom says it's a calcium deficiency. So I've started on that, but are there any other theories as to what it could be or can anyone ascertain that it is a calcium deficiency? more

Voting Question: Vitamin D - Given prescription today. 3 Questions!?

Hey gang! Today I received a call from my doctor's office, saying my Vitamin D was low, and I'm being put on 50,0000unts - 1 pill a week for 8 weeks. I have an appt w/ my Dr. next week, but wasn't able to speak with him today, so I have a few questions! One - as with any prescriptions, there's a long list of possible side effects ( weakness, headache, sleepiness...etc). I'm just wondering if any of these are more typical than others. I just took my first pill and feel pretty disoriented. Dizziness is listed as a possible side effect of the pill, but realistically, it's listed as a poss. side effect to basically every medication. Just wondering if anyone else had this experience, or other experiences. I'm also wondering if I will likely need to take Vitamin D pills as a longtime supplement, or will taking them for the next 8 weeks or so fix the problem? And lastly... If I do have a Vitamin D deficiency... I read that the vitamin does something with calcium in your intestines. I've had stomach/nausea problems for a while. Could there be a correlation between feeling ill and having the deficiency? Thanks bunches for any responses. I'll follow up with my doctor next week, I'm just impatient :) more

Resolved Question: I have acid reflux and its causing swallowing problems and esophageal spasm was told to take nexium but....?

It goes against everything I believe in these proton pump inhibitors drugs are very bad for you they cause calcium or bone loss vitamin b-12 deficiency protein malabsorbtion and risk of food borne illness plus bacterial pneumonia. I need them to let my esophagus heal so i can swallow easier but feel the risks are huge what to do im 28 male young but need nutrition like everyone else. Resolved Question: My guinea pig has white spots on his ears... could this be malnutrition?

I got a guinea pig 2 days ago that was clearly not being fed correctly at the pet store. I talked to one saleswoman who said they were being fed ONLY alfalfa hay (which has too much calcium in high doses, even for young ones) and pellets, no vegetables at all. She also said they didn't supplement any extra vitamin C into their diet because "there was more than enough in the pellets." Now I think he might have a vitamin C deficiency, along with too much calcium. I've been feeding him timothy hay, timothy-based pellets, fresh grass (don't worry, no pesticides), kale and green peppers to try to correct the problem. I tried to find him vitamin C drops at the pet store as well, but the only ones I found were yogurt and he definitely doesn't need any more calcium. His pee dried completely white last night, today it looked more milky which is a good sign. So, my question is - could the rough, raised white spots I've noticed on the back and sides of his ears be related to malnutrition? He definitely doesn't have mites because he hasn't been scratching at it, and otherwise his coat looks perfectly healthy. I'm wondering if it's just dry skin, or maybe even just his normal skin texture, but I'm not sure. Are the bumpy spots are a bad sign? Does anyone who knows more about guinea pigs have any idea what this could indicate? By the way, his ear is completely bald and pink, that's why I can see the bumps so well. I'm not sure if he has anything similar on his other ear because it's black. more

Resolved Question: I'm writing a synthesis paper and need advice.?

I need help identifying three points the following essays have in common and how they relate to each other. You might follow these steps in synthesizing: 1.Identify points in common between the two essays, and organize your paper around those subtopics. 2.For each subtopic, paraphrase each author’s perspective, presenting the reasoning or evidence the author uses. Note: this is not a comparison-contrast essay; a synthesis differs in that instead of presenting all of one side before moving on to the next, you look at each subtopic in turn, moving between each author’s view several times. For example, the body of your paper will look something like this: Subtopic 1: Author A’s view and how it relates to Author B’s view Subtopic 2: Author A’s view and how it relates to Author B’s view Subtopic 3: Author A’s view and how it relates to Author B’s view These are the two articles: YES Vegetarian diets reduce total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides. Atherosclerosis can begin early in life, as we learned from autopsies done on Korean War soldiers. Today atherosclerotic plaque is beginning in children and is especially pronounced in African American girls, probably due to poor diet and lack of exercise. Raising children as vegetarians delays the onset of this process. Vegetarian children tend to be thinner than meat eaters, a healthy trend in a country where overweight and inactivity have become the No. 1 public-health problem, leading to Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and stroke in middle age. Some argue that vegetarian children will be calorie-deprived. But malnutrition only occurs where access to food is also limited. There’s little evidence that growth is retarded in vegetarian children in developed countries. Similarly, some argue that vegetarian children born to vegan mothers, who eat no animal products at all, will get insufficient vitamin B12. But B12 deficiency in vegans is no higher than in the general population, suggesting there may be sources of B12 other than meat. It may be seeping into soils from organic fertilizer that’s often used on organic farms, the source of produce for many vegans. In any case, B12 is easy to provide as a supplement. Iron deficiency from a vegetarian diet? Our definition of anemia is probably far too stringent. There’s mounting evidence that levels of iron considered normal in the U.S. may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. Starting children on vegetarian diets early will increase the chance that they’ll continue to eat little meat when they are adults, which means they’re likely to be healthier than meat-eating counterparts. NO Children are picky eaters. They need options, and it’s much easier to obtain balance from an omnivorous diet. Moreover, children need a higher ratio of nutrients to calories than adults. Broccoli’s a fine source of calcium, but you’re not going to get a kid to eat a pound a day, which would be necessary due to low bioavailability. It’s also hard to get sufficient iron, zinc, and vitamins A, D, and B12 from vegetables. Women who shun red meat are likely to be deficient in zinc. One would assume the same to be true for children. Zinc is necessary for growth, immune function, and normal sexual development, and is a cofactor in a variety of enzymes. A number of studies, mostly in animals, suggest that children whose diets exclude elements such as cholesterol and certain fats will grow up unable to induce sufficient enzymes to handle those foods. Breast milk, the optimal food for infants and toddlers, is high in fats and cholesterol. Where’s the logic in weaning a child of 1 or 2 from breast milk to a low-fat vegetarian diet? At least two published reports document failure to thrive in children who have been weaned onto a “low-risk” diet. These involve several dozen children of upper-middle-class suburbanites, who stopped growing at age 2 or 3. Recently, it was discovered that conjugated linoleic acid, found in meat and dairy, seems to reduce body fat, lower cholesterol, and inhibit cancer in a variety of animals. I don’t advocate eating red meat daily, and servings should shrink to the size of a deck of cards. But just because we consume too much doesn’t mean we should run to the other extreme. Vegetarians are likely to be poorly informed about nutrition. They’d benefit from a referral to a registered dietitian. more

Resolved Question: How has conventional medicine harmed you?

I'll show you mine, if you show me yours :P 1) age 12-14 - I had horrible abdominal pains that were first diagnosed as 'ovulation pains' for which I was put on the pill, receiving no relief. Then the diagnosis was that I was looking for attention and was making it all up. I was referred to a psychiatrist who put me on antipsychotic drugs. The pain continued and I missed so much school as a result. Times when I would vomit from the pain, my mother took me to my doc so I could get a sick note for school, but the doctor's notes would read 'i see no evidence of dehydration, child needs more discipline at home' Due to misdiagnosis I failed grade 8. I was so depressed and attempted suicide a few times. I was on so many drugs, for psychosis, depression, anxiety. My doc them suggested I live spend some time with my mother's family in 'the old country' for proper disciplining. During my time there I was not allowed any pain medication, EVER, since I was just making it up. It was hell. Conclusion - after having been seen by at least 8 doctors, I decided to do my own research and came up with gallstones as a possibility. I approached a new doctor with this, she did an ultrasound and I indeed had stones. 2) Age 18. I saw my doctor for what I thought was a developing hunchback. She told me it was just fat. 19 years later a chiropractor saw this hump and told me my spine was deformed, likely due to the extremely tight muscles over top. After a few months of massage and chiropractic treatment, the deformity, as well as headaches, migraines and other associated symptoms, are all gone 3) Age 36 - severe muscle spasms, 100's per day, peripheral neuropathy, panic attacks, high blood pressure peaks, endocrine imbalance, torturous head tightness and a miscellany of other problems my MD diagnosed as 'stress', precribing me anti-anxiety meds, together with Lyrica from my neurologist. My naturopath ran the proper tests and found severe iron, calcium and magnesium deficiency, anemia, and chronic lead poisoning. My chiropractor worked on an area of of my spine that was associated with the nerves that caused many of the problems I was having, and massage therapists discovered and treated severely tight cranial and other fascia tissues. Between my Naturopath, Chiropractor, Massage Therapist and my own Herbal therapies, My condition improved dramatically. While at the hands of my MD and Neurologist, I was in so much suffering I wanted to die on many occasions. If not for that dedicated team, and my views of health and healing, I might have ended up on drug after drug that never would address the core problems. I have more stories, but would rather hear yours now.Mushroom Cloud, please provide scientific and reliable data to substantiate your claim that "When alt-med fails, many people are too humiliated to admit that they chose this kind of treatment, and many are plain dead" what is many? do you have a number? :DHannah, It was not 1 doctor, it was DOZENS spanning decades and various cities, ranging from family MD's, ER docs, and specialists such as psychiatrists, neurologist, cardiologist etc. The medical system has harmed me by training legions of practitioners to prescribe drugs to address symptoms without investing much effort into seeking the underlying cause. You agree the health service is crap, yet you no not provide any scientific data to back your claim that it is the best we have.rhianna, please learn to read. This question is not addressed to you. I certainly do not answer questions such as "why do you love Jesus," when I do not and it obviously does not pertain to me. I believe I now understand why you do not acknowledge the scientific evidence validating many of the natural therapies you dismiss as quackery, perhaps you just need to brush up on your reading skills, since you have clearly demonstrated yourself to be challenged in these regards.Your reasoning lacks both logic and truth. If I had wanted to know about people's successes with conventional medicine I would have a) asked for that information b) asked for that information in its appropriate category. But you already knew that :) Would you like to now answer how Jesus has saved your life? It would be equally as relevant to my question. Now that I see that you are not interested in answering questions as asked, and prefer to project your own ideas into others' questions, (narcissism? delusions?), I will be sure to simply ignore you in the future as you obviously have no intention of offering relevant responses, opting rather to offer answers to questions you think should have been asked instead. lol. so sad. more

CalciumCarbonate CaCO(Little 3) Each tablet contains 1.25g CaCO(Little 3) Calculate the relative formula mass (Mr) Of calcium carbonate. Relative atomic masses = C - 12 O - 16 Ca - 40 I Got 100. Calculate the percentage of calcium in calcium carbonate. I got 48% Calculate the mass of calcium in each tablet I can't answer this one :S Please Help! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Why is it so hard for parents to make a vegetarian meal?

will the world end if you make two meals? arent you supposed to eat a well balanced diet? so whats so hard about making something out of rice? or is it lack of ingenuity? "can make meat, cant make vegetarian" - sounds like extreme laziness. do people realize they are already giving vegan food to their pets? look what's in dry dog food. corn, wheat, rice, barley, arent they carnivores? or is it because of B12? I've heard of a research that shows even omnivores have a B12 deficiency. now what? looks like you'll still have to eat some supplements. or is it calcium? but most of the world doesnt suck someone else's titties into adulthood and their bones are fine. http://thebabybond.com/MilkingYourBones.html or is it proteins and iron? grains and nuts have them. almonds also have less saturated fat and no cholesterol. how cool is that? isnt your duty to feed the kids? many are failing horribly. when I signed up, I didnt nag whenever kids have bizzare food wishes in camps and orphanages (I'm a philanthropist). indian families have no problem cooking for that vegetarian hindu or jainist they have in the family. dont you feel embarrassed for your laziness? Resolved Question: How can I become healthy if i'm allergic to a lot of things?

Last month i had to go get an allergy test and it turns out i'm allergic to fruits, vegetables, nuts and extremely allergic to soy (there were also other things). So my doctor told me not to eat these things and he gave me this needle that i have to stab in my leg in case of an emergency when i feel my throat close up. i was unaware of the soy, but when i eat fruits or vegetables, my lips swell up and my throat gets itchy. i have an iron and calcium deficiency and high cholesterol. I take my green calcium and red iron pills but i feel they aren't working for me. It's been a year and my doctor isn't really helping. I'm still often weak or tired when i have to get ready for school. I'm always late or absent. It's really hard for me to exercise because my asthma acts up really fast even when picking up a few things from the floor or putting away laundry. I just feel like I don't have any motivation to do anything anymore. I'm been feeling this way since 10th grade, but it's gotten worse over the years now that I'm 17. I believe I'm stressed. However, my main concern is how do I lower my cholesterol if I'm allergic to healthy food? I also want to become more active and have more energy to do things. more

Resolved Question: Do you think that Black Seed Oil can be used as a treatment for HIV/AIDS?

I AM SORRY THAT THIS IS LONG, BUT PLEASE READ I am currently doing research about Black Seeds. It is also known as Black Coriander or Black Caraway seeds. It is know that Black Seeds can cure/treat many medical ailments. Well in my Biology class, we were learning about adaptation, and an example is the AIDS virus. When ever this one perosn took the medication, it seemed that somehow the virus would adapt to it. Well since I have heard of Black Seed, and I have done some research, I was wondering if it can treat HIV/AIDS. I know that it may not completley cure it, or that you need to take this for a while to see results, i was just wondering about the possibilities. Based on this info, what do you think? Any comments will be accepted. It would help me if you cite your information (if you can). -Black seed unquestionably has a positive and stabilizing effect on the human immune system which . Moreover, since diseases are the result of defective immune systems, it is fair to assume that the beneficial effects go beyond skin disorders and allergies. Since the immune system has a direct or indirect effect on all the systems of the body, when you are infected by any disease, the power of the immunity system affects the cure of this disease. -Black seed is a safe and effective herb that can be used by almost anyone. No irritations or side effects are caused when the right dose is correctly applied. Its benefits are obtained through consistent use,the effects are medium to long term. Diabetes is useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus or diabetes caused by an allergy. However it is recommended that the treatment be supervises because Black seed does lower blood sugar levels. Black seed should not be taken by pregnant women if their wombs are sensitive -Mahfouz and El-Dakhakhny, prominent Egyptian researchers isolated the active principle nigellone from Black Seed's essential oil in 1959. There are over 100 different chemical components in the seed. Nigella and melatin are two ingredients in Black Seed that contribute greatly to its highly diversified powers. These substances work together to provide the digestive benefits that have been revered in Black Seed. They also promote cleansing and assist with overall eliminating action. Two of the most volatile oils found in Black seed are nigellone and thymoquinone which were fist discovered in the herb in 1985. Nigellone offers both anti-spasmodic and bronchodilating properties which contribute to Black Seed's potency against respiratory ailments. It also acts as an antihistamine which helps to reduce the negative symptoms of allergy sufferers. Thymoquinone contains excellent anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. It is also a strong anti-oxidant and helps cleanse the body of toxins. Both nigellone and thymoquinone work in conjunction with one another to enhance Black Seed's action against respiratory ailments. It also provides a healthy alternative to the more commonly prescribed cortisone based therapies used by allergy sufferers. Black seed provides a rich supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids. These ingredients play a key role in daily health and wellness. They help to regulate the metabolism, carry toxins to the skin's surface for elimination, balance insulin levels, regulate cholesterol, improve body circulation, and promote healthy liver function. A deficiency in polyunsaturated fatty acids can lead to a wide number of health problems including nervous system disorders, uninhibited growths, and skin diseases. Black seed contains over 100 valuable nutrients. It is comprised of approximately 21% protein, 38% carbohydrates, and 35% plant fats and oils. The active ingredients of black seed are nigellone, thymoquinone, and fixed oils. Black seed also contains significant proportions of protein, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids. Other ingredients include linoleic acid, oleic acid, calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin B2, niacin, and vitamin C. A 1994 study conducted in London by King's College revealed that Black Seed has properties that inhibit certain enzymes, which also inhibit the production of certain prostaglandins. This is more proof that the rich and complex combination of elements found in Black Seed work together for a total effect. Black Seed has over 1400 years history of use. Many ancient books and text suggest the following traditional uses for Black Seed. But please note, that these should not be understood as cures or treatments for any disease or illness. Now this is only some of the research that I have done. I have not actually done some testing or anything, I am just in High School. Right now, I am in the stage of gathering information. more

Resolved Question: I have a Miniature Schnauzer who is Due at any time.?

The last pregnancy she had, she ended up with Calcium Deficiency, all puppies survived along with a lot of help and momma too. I did not intend on her breeding again but I had to leave town on a family emergency and the lady I had dog sitting thought she kept my male separated, but obviously not enough, I had no idea she had bread until she started showing so I do not know due date. My Questions, 1. I know I am not to feed her calcium until the puppies are born but should I start immediately after or during labor, she has a bad reaction to changing her food but can I mix her regular food with puppy chow now or should I do it after? 2. Could she have a fever and this effect the temperature drop? 3. Her Stool has changed to Dark Tar yesterday, she has milk in all teats and puppies move but not a lot, but no temperature drop, she has been at 99.8 to 100 everyday since I started taking it 3 days ago, I have been taking it rectally with a normal rectal thermometer, she has been doing all the nesting behavior and restless and clingy for 2 days now, but no panting and no plug that I have noticed, I live 57 miles from the nearest dr. and I am afraid to leave her as she tends to have trouble delivering most pups are breach, What do you think? more

Resolved Question: Problems losing weight... Please help?

I'm slightly overweight, by like 20 pounds or so and i've been looking to lose between 30 and 40 pounds. I had some major health issues a few months ago and my doctor thought that my weight might have been a small reason for those problems...small but a reason nonetheless and i don't want to have those problems again so i've been trying to take care of what i can to prevent it. Most of my life, i was an avid pop drinker...pepsi so a ton of calories. After i got out of the hospital a few months ago and fully set my mind to losing weight, i cut pop off cold turkey thinking that that was where most of my daily calories were coming from because i don't eat too unhealthy and i never eat much of anything anyway. So i got every bit of pop out of the house and that was it. Along with that...i turned my diet into mainly fruits and veggies, low-fat yogurts, greens, non-red meat and other types of proteins. I drink tons of water and freshly squeezed juices. All in a healthy moderation. I eat between 1100-1200 calories usually, sometimes a little over but never over 1300 just because, i get full very quickly and stop eating, resulting in my not eating much at any time. I also ride the exercise bike that i have for an hour a day, then go to the gym and do the treadmill for another hour and i end up lifting weights for 45 minutes to an hour plus i'm always up an running with my daily work so it's not like i'm not getting more than enough exercise. I keep a full diary of my diet and exercise and my fiance is all about being healthy, keeping only healthy foods in the house, exercising...i work with him and i never cheat on diets or skip exercising any day Monday-Friday. And yet...i've lost MAYBE 5-6 pounds since the beginning of July of this year. I've had my on and off fitness trainer and also a nutritionist look at my diet and my exercise and they say...by all that i'm doing, i should've lost the weight i want to lose and then some. And yet...hardly lost any at all and they're stumped as to reasons. When i went into the hospital at the end of June, i did have calcium and vitamin D deficiencies but i've been taking those supplements religiously to get back on track since i've gotten out and they should be back up to normal again but i've been told those deficiencies could be a reason for having trouble losing weight. Could anybody give me any other possible reasons for my having this much trouble trying to get this weight off? more

Resolved Question: How would you interpret the following essay question?

Write a 1500 word research essay based on one of the many deficiency diseases that are possible when micronutrient (vitamin or mineral) requirements are not met in the diet. I have chosen calcium deficiency which can cause loads of things like rickets and osteoporosis. Do I discuss calcium in the diet and then bring the health issue into the essay? Or do I write about rickets and then bring the calcium topic in? Different students in my class are approaching it differently and the teacher is not so good and never helps or explains things! I am approaching it by discussing calcium, do you think this the right approach? How do I structure a research essay? Please help, any advice is very welcome :-) more

Voting Question: I think I'm sick but doctors all just tell me it's an iron deficiency. Are these symptoms normal?

Hi. I'm a 24 year old female and I'm always tired! I have bags under my eyes all the time and sometimes when I stand up too fast my head starts spinning, I get dizzy and see stars (I'm guessing this is due to my ever low blood pressure). I take iron supplements with my food but they don't seem to help much. I admit I don't do much exercise except for walking to the store. I also have alot of discomfort in my joints, my knees especially-but doctors say they can't find anything wrong and that I should just take enough calcium. Often when I'm sleepy the fatigue is so overwhelming I tremble and my mind basically shuts down. Could this really just be a normal case of anemia? more

Resolved Question: Hypothyroidism (low thyroid) questions...?

I have been recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I've done a lot of research on it, and I still don't know what caused mine. I've never had thyroid surgery, I've never been pregnant and I don't have an iodine deficiency. Does anyone know of any other causes? Also, I don't like the idea of being on medication for the rest of my life. Is there an injection you can take that allows the hormone to just release over a few months in your body so that you don't have to take a pill each day? And lastly, reading the medication insert, it says not to take calcium or dietary fiber with the medication. Does that mean I can't have any calcium or fiber ever? That's going to be impossible for me since my doctor said I need to take calcium + Vitamin D supplements cause my levels are low. I'm confused about this one. Since I'm very newly diagnosed, any information, tips, links, etc are appreciated. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Is it a calcium deficiency? Or is it Periodontists?

I have looked up both and have found that I have a lot of the other things that go with calcium deficiency, but am still concerned that it could be periodontitis... I recently noticed that one of my teeth is a bit loose. The gums seem to be slightly recessed and they are a bit darker there, but not puffy and they don't bleed at all when I floss or bush (and I brush the gums very well). I did have a period where I was not able to take care of my teeth though. While I was pregnant, any time I brushed my teeth, I threw up. Brushing with or without tooth past or even trying to use mouth wash. Even eating much of anything was making me throw up. So now that some time has gone by, I'm worried that may have caused a problem that is now escalating to the point that I am seeing it. I also was recently told that the calcium I take is a kind that does not absorb into the body well, and even more so, since I have been trying to diet and do not eat breakfast with my vitamins, it would absorb even worse because eating helps it absorb (apparently). On top of that, when I was looking at the bottle, although I had thought ONE pill was worth 120% daily calcium, a serving (120%) is actually THREE....so I was only taking a 40% dose. A dose I took with all of my other vitamins (including some that I found reduce calcium absorption). Other than my vitamins, I do not get hardly any calcium at all in my diet. So, The most I could hope to actually be getting is less than 40%...probably a LOT less... So, now my question is which of these would be the cause of my loose tooth? (Oh, also ave been loosing hair and such - other things that say are calcium issues). I don't have dental insurance and we already don't have enough money coming in, so I can't afford to see a doctor/dentist (especially since it looks like there is A LOT that has to be done for periodontist...I also can't lose the tooth...teeth...since it would continue to spread...if it is that, will continued morning and night brushing teeth/gums, flossing and mouth wash help enough? I'm scared, but can't afford to do anything else. Any suggestions anyone else has would be GREAT!!! more

Resolved Question: Severe muscle cramping every evening, what am I deficient in?

Hello everyone, I was just wondering what my deficiency might be, also taking into account that I am bulimic/anorexic with ongoing symptoms. In the middle of the night I get horrendous "locking of my muscles" that feel like that they're being clamped. Is this indicative of low potassium or low calcium? Thanks very much, Av more

Resolved Question: Vitamin D Deficiency?

Just had blood work done and the nurse called and told me that I have a Vitamin D Deficiency. My count is 20 and it should be 50-80. The doctor wants me to up my dosage by 1200 more units. I am taking regular vitamins and Calcium with D already (300% of daily req). My husband thinks there has to be more to it and that my body isn't absorbing the Vitamin D. I called the nurse and she said that since we live OH we don't get enough sunlight so many are having this problem. We find that hard to believe - do the people in Alaska just die due to lack of sunshine? Please help me - I don't know what to do and I can't talk to my doctor only the nurse. They also won't recommend anyone for a second opinion. I called a couple of doctors and they don't do second opinions. So, I feel just stuck and don't know what to do. HELP!!!!!!!! more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with me if I "shake" when working out?

Whenever I lift weights, do pushups, etc...my entire body tends to "shake" and I've never known why. I can try to control it/prevent it a little bit by really focusing on the exercise (though it shouldn't take that much concentration, as that isn't normal for it to be there in the first place), but it still happens. What causes this? It has done this ever since I can remember growing up. I started lifting weights at about 14 years old, and I'm now 28 years old...so it's not that I'm "not strong enough to do the exercises." I've been told by a few people that it's diet-related and a deficiency in (insert compound, mineral, vitamin here). However, that doesn't seem to be the case. There would have been at least one time over the years when I was not deficient in whatever, and I wouldn't have had that problem...so it's not that. Also, from a younger age growing up in elementary school, I did have a very slight "tremble" at certain times that other kids noticed only because they didn't seem to do it (when I held a piece of paper in one hand, my hand shook a little more noticeably than theirs). I also have no known neurological conditions (I do not "shake" all of the time as a person does with bad nerves, for instance). However, I've noticed other things like when I get cold...I shiver to the point of having trouble speaking properly and basically visibly shaking all over. Whereas other people do not seem to have that issue as much, either. All of the other people that I've seen working out, lifting weights, doing pushups, etc. do not "shake" at all...whether it's lighter weight, moderate weight or even maxing their muscles out. I don't seem them shake, period. I'm not looking for a "Oh, I do that, too!" answer...as that doesn't tell me one thing about WHY I do it and what causes it. Can anyone explain why? I also take no medication of any sort other than basic vitamic c, calcium, etc. supplements in addition to food...but it's not an overdose of them by any means. more

Resolved Question: Removing/avoiding "hybrid" eggs?

I have two Pionus parrots, a male Maximillian and a female Blue-headed. Over the past few months, the female had started acting strange and was always wandering around looking for places to "hide." She was also shredding paper at the bottom of her cage. Early this week I caught the male trying to mount her, but he was not successful (at least while I was watching). Since then she has continued to spend time in the tray of her cage (this style cage has a gap between the bottom grate and the tray, so she can climb into it) aggressively going after anyone who approached. Tonight, I found her sitting on an egg when I got home. I obviously don't want to have anything to do with breeding hybrid parrots. What is the best way to handle this? I'm worried that if I take away the egg immediately, she will continue to lay more (can't this lead to calcium deficiency?). How long should I wait? I'm also worried about it being traumatic for her to see me taking the egg away. I understand it's natural for females to lay eggs (even if males aren't present), but is there anything I should do to discourage this in the future? Thank you for your time, more

Resolved Question: What is this, cramps or what? Help?

Sometimes, when it's chilly or cool, if I flex a leg muscle or a toe or something, the muscle becomes tight and it hurts really bad. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with my upper leg or calf in pain like that, and it subsides in a couple minutes if I wrap my leg in a blanket or something. I'm 13 and relatively healthy. It happens often, every other night or two or three times a week. For the past couple weeks, and it had happened last fall, too. My mom keeps saying it's some sort of vitamin or calcium deficiency. She's a nurse, so I guess I should listen to her... lol So yeah, what is it and what can I do to prevent it from happening at 2 am?!Oh, and I'm a girl, so yeah, Women's Health... more

Voting Question: Any idea what's wrong with me?

So I recently started desperately craving meat (specifically beef) and dairy products. At first I thought perhaps it was like an iron and calcium deficiency, but I accidentally cut myself really badly yesterday and barely bled. In the past few days it's evolved to where if I eat any vegetable matter without some sort of animal product (meat, dairy, eggs, etc.) accompanying it, I get terribly naseaus and develope a terrible headache. I also noticed today that according to my bathroom scale (which for all other purposes seems to be accurate), I've gained 15 lbs in the past week, but my clothes have become a bit baggy on me. Along with the progression of these changes, my vision has begun to come quite blurry. I spent 8 years as a medical professional (most of it in critical care) and I haven't the foggiest idea what could be wrong with me. Any ideas?I should probably mention that I am most certainly not pregnant... yes, I am 1000% sure of that. more

Resolved Question: I want to grow and im 17... so here is the situation: i want to grow taller and get developed (muscles etc)?

Here are the things to think about (please read all to give an accurate answer): I am 1.71m or 5.6'ft 1. I have always been short for my age, I look like 15 or 14 right now and im 17 2. My mother is very short (1.5m or 4.9' ft) and my brother is only 1.75m or 5.7' ft (yes I know genetics plays a big role in height) previous family height is around 1.60m for females and 1.80m for males 3. I have never been fit because I have done little exercise activity (im not fat but I do have some body fat) I do not have the volume of muscle an average 15 year old would have. And I have lead a sedentary life up to now. 4. I have had anemia before and my nutrition has sucked, only recently I have started to eat more healthy (yes I have had calcium deficiency, nutrients, vitamins etc.) 5. I have always slept late and I have 2 black circles under my eyes, now I sleep around 6 to 8 hours a night 6. I do not smoke or drink coffee or lift heavy weights Goal: I want to grow to 1.85m like my dad, I will do anything it takes except surgery or stupid temporary gains like shoes with higher heels -I'm thinking of doing Yoga stretches and heavy impact exercising to break muscle and bone fibers so that they grow back when I rest. -I will take zinc 1 supplement and tune my nutrition. -I will sleep 8 hours a night What else can I do, what do you suggest, what should I incorporate into my nutrition? etc. I know its a long question but please respond; if you have any questions ask away more

Resolved Question: i think i should just end it now. advice?

i dont really know why im posting this. im not looking for attention or anything. i think i just need to vent. any advice would be helpful though. so yeah. this is my life. my father beats me and tells me i shouldve been aborted. my mom stopped trying to stop him, and now shes leaving for florida in the morning. so i'll have no buffer at all. my sister pretends she doesnt know. shes 19 going on 5. and is ridiculously immature. we're not like normal siblings. if i say anything bad to her, i get hit. if she does anything to me, nothing. so she tells on me for everything i do, because she knows i cant do anything. my grandpas and uncles do the same thing. she was born with a brain tumor and is very overweight, so they give her all the attention. im petite and not horrid looking so they figure lifes too easy for me. over the years i developed anorexia. i literally have nothing else besides me thinness. im 5'7 and about 102 pounds, and i still see myself as fat. i also became anemic because im a vegetarian. i have a calcium deficiency too. my mom bought me some pills. but theyre almost out. my dad doesnt buy me food anymore. he says if im hungry i can eat meat like everyone else. and i get in trouble if i buy some for myself. so i guess im pretty malnourished. all of these things have made me clinically depressed to the point that i cut myself and i have this thing called trichotillomania. thats where you have this compulsive need to pull your hair out. so all of my hairs underneath are like gone and my scalp is raw. but for some reason i cant stop. my friends try to help me. they told my school counselors. but the counselors called social services. so everyone came and bombarded my home. trying to take my dad away. but he only hurts me. i was the accidental child. im the one who fucks everything up. so how fair is it to get him taken away when im leaving in two years? so we all lied. and hes still here. idk. i want to run away. but my parents honestly think im happy. they say "sure we argue. but we give you everything!" whats everything? im not allowed to leave for more than 2 hours a day on weekends. they take my phone/ipod/tv...everything at night. no ones allowed to come over. and im not allowed to spend the night anywhere else. im literally a prisoner in my own house! the three of them will go to dinner, or to a party, or to the movies, etc. but i have to stay home and clean the house. my sister never does. so she purposely trashes it. she threw mud all over my basement once, just because she knew i'd have to clean it. i want to run away. but i just cant. they wouldnt understand. and i cant hurt my mom like that, or leave her here with my dad. its only 19 more months till i can move out. i can handle that right? i have so far. its been 16 years. i can handle two more. i just hope things will get better. my boyfriend and all my friends have been getting mad at me lately. they know what the bruises are. they know whats going on. and they want to talk about it. but i cant. i've never been able to talk about anything. i solve things on my own. because i can only depend on myself. thats how it is. so they get mad and just try to make me feel better. they tell me im beautiful and deserve better. but i dont? i have nothing going for me. i have nothing to contribute to the world. i have no skills. no special talent. i dont know what i want to do with my life. everything i can do, someone else can do better. so why am i here? whats really the point? my dad thinks i shouldve been aborted. he calls me his biggest mistake. so how do i know hes not right? im failing school because i cant think strait. and i cant do homework between beatings. so i just dont. so if i dont graduate, what good am i to anyone? if i cant find a job, i'll just become a burden to the world. so how fair is that? maybe i should just stop it now. idk. i just dont know what to do anymore. i needed to talk to someone. so if you read all that thank you. i know its long. you dont need to reply. i just needed to let it out for once. so yeah. i'm done now. if you have any advice it would be helpful. just please dont tell me to call the police. or see a psychiatrist. or talk to a trusted adult. they're not taking my dad from my family, im not being put in foster care, and i dont talk about things. so no. none of those will be helpful.two things. one: sorry. im atheist. praying doesnt really work for me. and two: true people have a worse life. but being locked in a basement furnace room because you cant be trusted alone. no. i have reason to be upset. im sorry. i just dont like it when people say cheer up it could be worse. cuz then i just think. hey it might get worse. more

Resolved Question: Can external pressure deform the skull?

My question is: is it possible that long-term pressure, such as having your head pushed against a wall for a relatively long period of time, or short-term pressure, like headbutts in association football, cause your skull to deform? If so, does this depend according to the person, i.e.is it more likely to happen if you have weak bones, due to, for example, calcium deficiency? more

Voting Question: I'm so sick of being tired, exhausted, and lacking energy. Should I have a sleep study done?

I think my anti-depressants and being back in school have made things better for me but I'm still having some problems being exhausted, tired, and lacking energy. I eat decent, exercise almost every day, get about 9 hours of sleep a night plus a half hour nap, and have a somewhat regular sleep pattern. Since I am in college with 18 credits, work, working out, clubs, and other things, I only got 5 hours of sleep the night before last. Last night I got about 10 plus a 2 hour nap. I know there's such a thing as getting too much sleep. But I was so exhausted that all I wanted to do was sleep. Typically my sleep schedule is much more regular but I still feel almost as exhuasted, tired, and having little energy. It's hard for me to do much without getting a quick nap. It's been similar to this my whole life and I wish I could fix it. I suppose I should also mention that I don't have any thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies according to my blood work. My blood levels are a bit off but apparently I'm just supposed to continue being monitored - slighly high PTH and calcium I think. I take a B complex vitamin and multivitamin anyway. I feel like I've already done everything I can. Maybe I have hypersomnia (not sleep apnea though) and a sleep study would help?I did start trying to drink a little coffee this year and it has no effect on me. As far as protein goes, I drink a cup of chocolate milk 2-3 times a day and drink 2 bottles of Ensure Plus every day (each one has 26% DV of protein). I try to eat yogurt almost every day too. more

Resolved Question: Why can't I get NHS dental care? (UK)?

I've never had a filling and my teeth have always been in good condition. After I had my son I went to the dentist who told me pregnancy gave me a calcium deficiency and would need around 5 fillings. I had to move to Kent which is 5 hours from that dentist so I couldn't just 'pop' back. It has only been 7months since I've had my son but I've been declined NHS help for a dentist. They said I can only go private as they have no room for me apart from a 3year waiting list (which will not be free for me then, plus my teeth are starting to hurt already). I do not have that kind of money and I'm worried sick, does anyone have any advice? more
