Resolved Question: Are M.D.'s obsolete? Do naturopathic doctors(ND) replace the M.D.? what u think?
Naturopaths are trained in both traditional and alternative medicine and in California they must be licensed doctors to practice. I prefer them as my families primary health provider. They also go to medical school and have extensive knowledge that provides security to both me and my family. I'm surprise to learn that so many don't know about these wonderful professionals. Would you consider going to them? If not why not?
moreOpen Question: Why do so many doctors (M.D.) refuse to proscribe alternatives that work?
I mean after my client was give a death sentence from all the doctors (oncologist) she went to for her cancer. A naturopathic doctor gave her three herbals that cured her of the cancer.
Me? I'm a hairstylist and salon owner in Orange County California. I was amazed by my clients recovery and testimony. So, I researched around about naturopaths. Vary interesting findings.
Naturopathic doctors have to go through their own alternative medical school which is longer than most traditional med schools. Here in California they're recognized and licensed by the state.
While talking with a naturopathic doctor I was informed that the Medical establishment helped established laws that restricts naturopaths from claiming any kind of cure for cancer.
Odd considering how the most effective cures don't come from the AMA and hospitals, but from clinics considered as alternative medicine. Would you consider going to a doctor of alternative medicine and if not why not?
Naturopathic doctors do refer patients to traditional (oddly named) physicians when applicable, but rarely if ever the other way around.
In our wonderful information age there is hope for better answers than what many health care professionals can or will feed us. What is your take on all this?I have known this woman for years and yes, she had cancer. The three herbs that recovered her was black walnut, clover and wormwood. Her oncologist was going to have her on chemotherapy, but she recovered fine without it.

moreOpen Question: Strange feelings toward my mom...?
I hate my mom, but at the same time, I feel great sympathy for her...
She's so ignorant and stupid. She makes illogical statements and justifies her actions by them. She always tells me that I'm wrong and that I think that I'm the only one who knows what's right and what's wrong. I keep telling her that many of the things she believes and does are wrong and illogical, but it's no use.
She insists that I'm like her dad-- a self-righteous ignorant. He always told others that they are wrong and never listened to anyone.
I rarely(almost never) listen to her or her friends whom are not experienced or know what they are talking about.
She's didn't finish school and she's teaching herself alternative medicine.
She believes that modern medicine doesn't work and that it's not as good as ancient medicine.
She also believes in many conspiracy theories.
I really hate her and I get a really strange feeling of sympathy, irritation and sadness(sometimes mild depression) when I see/saw her do the following:
-Killed a cockroach because she didn't want it to suffer(it was dying slowly, I don't see anything wrong with that and it's a thing that I would do).
-Eating/doing something she likes, especially eating.
-Praying and reading her holy book.
-Watching a video that interests her on her laptop, especially when it's educational.
I really don't understand my feelings... I never felt like this toward anyone else in my life.
It sometimes happens with my dad, but not as much.
I think that my hate and the fact that she's not educated are the reasons why I sympathy her.
Am I the only one who feels this way?
I'm 20.English is my third language.
And I don't hate her because she's uneducated, I don't understand why the combination of hate and sympathy. I don't know why I hate her.
moreVoting Question: Why do countries with public health care forbid private insurance and private hospitals/care?
Australia has public (socialized) medicine. No one is allowed to take out a private medical insurance policy or go to a private hospital. Same thing in Britain, same thing in France, every person no matter how much he may want it has to rely on the public, socialized system. It would be like us in America shutting down every single private school and forcing everyone to go to public school even if we had the money to send our kids to a private school. This is why socialized medicine has been such a failure in places like Australia, Britain, France, New Zealand, Switzerland, Ireland.....they forbid a private alternative. In Ireland, you either rely on the public, socialized system or you fly to America if you have the money. No country with public health care has a parallel private system, every single citizen is forced to rely on the inferior public system with its waiting lists and incompetent staff. That is why Europe is socialist, they do not allow private enterprise.Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and several others have brought this up. Unlike the liberal media they don't make up things to suit their own agenda. I also have a family member who has visited England and he told me that they have no private health care whatsoever.
moreResolved Question: Are people who practice alternative medicine successful just because they spend more time with their patients?
The pro-pharma group keep propogating that the reason people get better is because we spend more time with patients and they only get better because they beleive they are going to. Consequently anything we do is a sham and worthless.
If all is needed is to spend more time with patients, why don't the medical profession do this?
They would have people getting better in droves surely?
Being a Non US trained Osteopath I have a very different opinion to this.....
Your thoughts please.....Thank you for your comments so far.
If its true that all we do thats better than what your lot do why do we need to train for as long?
If its a case of just spending more time and being nice to patients it wouldn't be necessary to train everybody that see's patients that go through the health system as doctors.
A years training on case history taking, basic pathologies, soft skills, and laying on of hand would be more than adequate. This would free up so much time for these over stretched doctors....So much so that many of them would actually be redundant!!
I can accept that part of my treatments success involves laying my hands on them but everyone knows there is more to it than that including the medical profession.
This is why in the UK every initiative to take pressure off Doctors who always complain they are over stretched WHICH HAS NOT COME FROM the doctors them selves has always been met by resistance from doctors. The real iss ue is about power and protecting markets. If all I needed to do was lay hands on people I wouldn't have trained for 4 years. I would have become a church minister.##That would depend on your definition of "successful".###
Getting patients symptoms free or helping them reduce chronic symptoms to manageable levels That would be successful to me.
###I notice you are now putting yourself and osteopathy squarely in the alt med camp.###
Yes. Our way of thinking is very different to the medical profession. We don't claim to have all the answers or to be a complete system of medicine though.Lo_mcg, It sounds like you needed counselling at the time rather than homeopathy.Anybody. You are probably right our ideas may not be so disimilar.
I also agree that someone being nice might make you feel a little better but its not going to help that acute disc bulge, that subluxed rib, that fact lock, that piriformis syndrome etc.etc.. Those patients actually need some treatment!!@ Rhianna, My apologies for the term Pro-Pharma. Anti-Altmed would have been more appropriate.
If the medical profession genuinely thought that spending time with people and being nice to them was all it took, swathes of people would be trained as I suggested to free up time for doctors.
The reason why this initiative, which would save the NHS a mile of cash every year, is not engaged is because there is so much more to Patient wellness than this. Everyone knows it.
We do not underestimate the power of placebo. Anyone who works in healthcare knows that a patient wanting to get well is critical for them to actually do so.
Ever met anyone who 'died of a broken heart'?
This is metaphorical but people do come up who are so unhappy for whatever reason, they loose their will to live, subsequently become sick and die. Usually there was nothing wrong with them to start with. The "Nocebo" effect can also be extra-ordinarily powerful.@Rhianna. I guess we can't win. If all we do is placebo and help people with self limiting conditions surely you should be pleased we are taking work off overstretched doctors?
You should be thanking US!
If all we do is help people who would have got better anyway we seem to do it better than you. So again why complain about what we do?
NB. You are anti-altmed. You don't want a level playing field you want us not to exist so that you can dominate the market. Remember you work for the patient not the other way round.
If the patient wants to march on the spot in suet going in an anti-clockwise direction, if it is safe to do so why stop them?
Even if its useless, if that floats their boat let them get on with it.I'm going to let this one go to the vote as i can't decide who has the best answer.Edit:
###Haven't you previously stated that you measure success by returning customers?###
Erm, no not really.
People re-injure themselves and they come back to me if I've done a good job. I had a plumber repair a leaky sink. I was impressed with him so he did my central heating installation.
Most of my work comes from recommendations because I've done a good job and DISCHARGED a patient who is a friend or colleague of theirs.
Of course there is always a list of people who need ongoing maintenance treatment periodically because they have underlying conditions such as Osteo-arthritis which needs treatment as it is a degenerative condition.
The same could be said for Doctors who prescribe blood pressure meds, statins or warfarin which need repeat prescriptions.
Doctors also prescribe anti-biotics with the view of resolving whatever they have prescribed it for. These people are likely to pick up another bacterial infection at some point in their lives. You are anti-altmed Rhianna and you know it.
Look up the Osteopathic principles on wikipedia. They hold water and are plausible. Tell me what you disagree with?I'm going to ask you again Rhianna, Look up the Osteopathic principles on wikipedia. They hold water and are plausible. Tell me what you disagree with?

moreResolved Question: why did you decide to try alternative medicine?
I was just curious.Hi noabuse, I'm sorry if you felt cheated by your doctors, or if you actually were cheated. But the number of good doctors far outnumber the bad. They're not out to get us, many of them went to med school because they want to help people. Its a good idea to keep an eye on the dirty ones, but we shouldn't condemn all doctors based on the actions of a few.
moreResolved Question: Why are liberals in denial about the biggest tax increase in history coming to everybody including the poor?
Read more: http://www.atr.org/index.php?content=jan1taxes#ixzz0t2xW9gcQ
In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for investors, small business owners, and families. These will all expire on January 1, 2011:
Personal income tax rates will rise. The top income tax rate will rise from 35 to 39.6 percent (this is also the rate at which two-thirds of small business profits are taxed). The lowest rate will rise from 10 to 15 percent. All the rates in between will also rise. Itemized deductions and personal exemptions will again phase out, which has the same mathematical effect as higher marginal tax rates. The full list of marginal rate hikes is below:
- The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
- The 25% bracket rises to 28%
- The 28% bracket rises to 31%
- The 33% bracket rises to 36%
- The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%
Higher taxes on marriage and family. The “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income. The child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child. The standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The dependent care and adoption tax credits will be cut.
The return of the Death Tax. This year, there is no death tax. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there is a 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million. A person leaving behind two homes and a retirement account could easily pass along a death tax bill to their loved ones.
Higher tax rates on savers and investors. The capital gains tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 20 percent in 2011. The dividends tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 39.6 percent in 2011. These rates will rise another 3.8 percent in 2013.
Second Wave: Obamacare
There are over twenty new or higher taxes in Obamacare. Several will first go into effect on January 1, 2011. They include:
The Tanning Tax. This went into effect on July 1st of this year. It imposes a new, 10% excise tax on getting a tan at a tanning salon. There is no exemption for tanners making less than $250,000 per year.
The “Medicine Cabinet Tax” Thanks to Obamacare, Americans will no longer be able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin).
The HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision of Obamacare increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.
Brand Name Drug Tax. Starting next year, there will be a multi-billion dollar tax assessment imposed on name-brand drug manufacturers. This tax, like all excise taxes, will raise the price of medicine, hurting everyone.
Economic Substance Doctrine. The IRS is now empowered to disallow perfectly-legal tax deductions and maneuvers merely because it judges that the deduction or action lacks “economic substance.” This is obviously an arbitrary empowerment of IRS agents.
Employer Reporting of Health Insurance Costs on a W-2. This will start for W-2s in the 2011 tax year. While not a tax increase in itself, it makes it very easy for Congress to tax employer-provided healthcare benefits later.
Third Wave: The Alternative Minimum Tax and Employer Tax Hikes
When Americans prepare to file their tax returns in January of 2011, they’ll be in for a nasty surprise—the AMT won’t be held harmless, and many tax relief provisions will have expired. The major items include:
The AMT will ensnare over 28 million families, up from 4 million last year. According to the left-leaning Tax Policy Center, Congress’ failure to index the AMT will lead to an explosion of AMT taxpaying families—rising from 4 million last year to 28.5 million. These families will have to calculate their tax burdens twice, and pay taxes at the higher level. The AMT was created in 1969 to ensnare a handful of taxpayers.
Small business expensing will be slashed and 50% expensing will disappear. Small businesses can normally expense (rather than slowly-deduct, or “depreciate”) equipment purchases up to $250,000. This will be cut all the way down to $25,000. Larger businesses can expense half of their purchases of equipment. In January of 2011, all of it will have to be “depreciated.”
Taxes will be raised on all types of businesses. There are literally scores of tax hikes on business that will take place. The biggest is the loss of the “research and experimentation tax credit,” but there are many, many others. Combining high marginal tax rates with the loss of this tax relief will cost jobs.
Tax Benefits for Education and Teaching Reduced. The deduction for tuition and fees will not be available. Tax credits for education will be limited. Teachers will no longe

In the past they helped people, both skeptics and not. Sometimes they can be a miracle to when western new medicine failed. If it was a placebo effect then there wouldn't be skeptics who got better on medicine. Not only that but there were many studies done on alternative medicine having significant advantage over a placebo. Also how can alternative medicine be denied when many of our medicines come from ancient used herbs and plants? I think they both work depending on the case really. It is especially in the older ages when in the east and other countries that medicine was the regular modern conventional medicine that it worked just like ours today. People who fail with western medicine can sometimes heal quickly with eastern, if it is all in the head, why did the people go to the west doctors first and only the eastern much later? I would also like to mention that now in the US there are more diseases and more clinical depression than ever before and our modern ways do a lot of hurt in their own ways.

moreResolved Question: If conventional medicine is so wonderful why does alternative medicine exist?
I keep hearing that people who use alternative medicine are deluded. stupid, only getting better because of the placebo effect etc and that if it works its conventional medicine, if it doesn't its alternative medicine.
That doesn't explain why so many people who have tried conventional medicine and had it fail come to see people like me and get success.
Is it all magic and fantasy or does alternative medicine fill a big void left by conventional medicine which does not manage chronic, non life threatening conditions particularly well?
Don't get me wrong, If I broke my leg or was having a heart attack I'd want to be in the ER.
If my wife was having a baby I'd want to see a midwife or obstetrician.
If I had musculoskeletal pain i wouldn't want a doctor anywhere near me unless it was a case for surgery.
Should conventional medicine try and beat us into the ground and kill the opposition or should it instead look at what we do and learn from us?
Your comments please.Carrie does the FDA itself do the testing?
You'll find the answer is generally no. Its a far from perfect system open to abuse. However, I agree non conventional medicine is hit and miss and needs to be regulated.
As far as "if it works it gets incorporated into conventional medicine is concerned" no it doesn't!
Ford & GM aren't rushing to take on engine designs which are radically different and twice as efficient if it means restructuring a plant & spending heeps on retraining. While people are still buying their product why would they change it?
As for 'if they are both deluded yes it would appear a change has been made' If all folk needed to do to get better was want to why, didn't they with conventional medicine?Exactly how effective is placebo?
I beleive its 30 - 50%
If anyone wants to organise a study of refering suitable candidates to osteopaths who have been through the medical system and not improved please talk to me. Lets see if we can beat 50% of those who haven't improvedBob, thanks for your answer. I don't agree that alternative medicine always targets the cause. Some therpies are very much based on treating symptoms and it also depends on the practitioner. the same can apply to conventional medicne. Some practitioners of it are very holistic.
However, in countries like the UK conventional medicine is free and everyone has access to it. In spite of this people choose to pay for alternatives.
Whay would so many do so if it had no effect what-so-ever? They aren't all stupid and deluded. Some of them are actually very inteligent.Angelhil, Not really. Counceling is often done by people with good intention but poorly trained. Thats actually very poorly regulated and largely ineffective which is probably why so many people seek mediums.
Yes I agree mediums are frauds and have about as much ability to speak to the dead as my derier.###The effectiveness of Medicine or lack of, has no bearing on the effectiveness of AltMed.
does it?###
No. One being ineffective doesn't make the other effective by default.
But it does demonstrate that Alternative medicine is providing something that is being missed by conventional medicine.OK Flizbap. But is there anything conventional Medicine can learn from us?###EDIT: Well I would have to say that FROM MY LIMITED EXPERIENCE, doctors (at least the American variety, as that is all I have dealth with) should have at least one class in "listening to what the patient is actually saying".###
I agree.
Listening to what a patient is saying also includes not labeling them as deluded, stupid, malingering,etc....

Are "rights" advocates bad people?
When MLK was killed...... people were overheard saying: "Finally they got rid of that - - - "
Would the world be better if we killed Mother Theresa too?
If NO, then why is there so much hate for "rights" advocates? ex: negativity towards Civil rights, Gay rights, Animal rights, Health rights (not free care, but the right to choose organic, alternative medicine, or choose NO health care when sick, right clean air and water), and the list goes on.

It seems to fit a lot of the standard alternative medicine criteria required for 'proof' such as:
It has been practised for thousands of years so must work.
People wouldn't do it if it didn't work.
A 'Dr' (and others) says it "increases the brain blood volume" and also "increases the brain's access to space and oxygen", which is technical enough to convince me.
I haven't tried it so can't comment on it.
So, (apart from if recommended by a conventional medical surgeon for a hematoma or intercranial pressure monitoring) would you give trepanning a go if recommended by your friendly alt med practitioner? Or if you just feel like giving it a go? And if not why not?

moreResolved Question: Mom forcing me to see Obgyn I'm uncomfortable with?
I'm 17 and expecting a baby in September. I currently go to a practice who has 6 obgyns/midwifes that I cycle through for each visit. My mom used these doctors for me and my other siblings and that's why I go here. Only thing is, I do not like this office. The one male doctor I am very uncomfortable being around, and the rest of the doctors are very cold towards me. They don't say hardly anything when I go to my appts and never thoroughly answer my questions or concerns. At my last appointment the one midwife was very snippy and rude with me, telling me to only gain 10 more pounds because my weight is getting out of control. I was 115 pounds before getting pregnant and 5"4', I am now 130 pounds at 26 weeks pregnant, but it does not show. It's all in the belly. I have found another doctor at another practice whom I would really like to switch to. She is a midwife who has everything I'm looking for, she's into natural birthing, low intervention birthing, alternative medicines, family centered birthing, and breastfeeding. She is just perfect for me, and a girl from school recommended her to me because she had a great pregnancy and birth with her and likes her very much.. I also like the fact that she does not "cycle" her patients. You see her every time and she will be there at your birth, not whoever is on call. But my mom refuses to let me switch, she had these doctors and she likes them so I have to stay with them. But this is MY baby and I feel like I should be able to chose who I want. I don't want to be forced to have doctors I feel uncomfortable with. Do I have any choice in this? The other doctor is covered by my insurance and currently accepting new patients. Do I have the choice to stop seeing my current doctor and start seeing the new one? I'm not looking for any comments like well if you weren't having a baby so young you wouldn't have to worry about this. I'm just looking for a kind answer to my question.
moreResolved Question: Why don't theists understand that god cannot be the null hypothesis?
I was watching the "Atheist Experience" this weekend and they had a caller who presented so-called evidence for the Bible. Basically, he claimed there was confirmation of the Bible Genesis story in Chinese characters (I won't go into details here, it isn't worth typing). The hosts of the show gave three possible explanations for the 'evidence'...
1 - Elements of the Genesis story made it to China through mundane methods (carried by traders, etc) accounting for the similarity
2 - The similarity is a subjective interpretation; for example, we can look at clouds and see 'things', but our ability to see these 'things' in the clouds does not mean there are really there.
3 - God did it.
And then they asked the caller, which of the explanations were the most and least likely. The caller said, "I believe an explanation involving god is the default explanation".
That answer struck me. It is 100% completely incorrect. Why can't Christians see that a position in support of God is a positive claim and thereby cannot be the null, e.g. the default. (The hosts had a good example, if you 'believe' you are a millionaire, you need to prove you have the money before you go buy a yacht.) Many Christian use this logical fallacy...
- Evolution cannot explain *everything*... so the Bible must be right
- You cannot prove there is no god... so there must be one
- I was in a accident today but didn't die... so god must of saved me
- etc.
Is this what makes someone an atheist or theist? Whether or not they understand this simple logical concept? (Note, this is certainly not limited to Christians, believers in most religions, alternative medicine, psychics, etc all suffer from the same deficit of understanding.)Wow... what a load of crap answers.
"X is real" is a positive claim and so cannot be the null/default. This isn't something made up by atheists, it is just a requirement of logic.
Let me try this again....
"I have $1,000,000 and you cannot prove I don't". While it is true that I cannot prove you don't have that money, my inability to prove you don't have the money does not mean you in fact have the money. So, making the positive claim you have the money the 'default' is meaningless. You must be able to prove you in fact DO have the money before you in fact have the money.
The argument for god is the same, "God is real and you cannot prove he isn't" has all the problems as the $1,000,000 example above. Because you place his existence as a null, my inability to prove his nonexistence is meaningless. In order for a test to be valid, the positive claim cannot be the null.Oiloiloil Nw-is-waiting, while I am not familiar with the research you cite, I will say two things.
- Baylor is famously a conservative christian college. Any research on this topic coming out of that school should be reviewed carefully before taken at face value.
- I admit in my note that this is a phenomena not limited to Christians. People, some very smart people, grasp at things which are completely foolish. For example, the anti-vaccination people. Regardless of the overwhelming evidence that there is no link between vaccines and autism (and the exposure of the original researchers as liars and profiteers), many intelligent and educated people continue to believe. However, the stupidity of a population does not change the rules of logic. Just as making the claim that 'god is the default' does not make him real.Nick,
I don't know many Christians who say, "God might exist" or "God might have saved me". Most such statements are pretty certain and most believers view a belief in god as all or nothing.

I take 10mg of lisinopril daily to lower my blood pressure, but I also smoke at night to ease my insomnia. I don't trust sleep medications after seeing several side-effects on my relatives, so that's why I use this alternative. I don't even think I smoke as much as the average smoker, a bowl's worth at most.
Anyway, I heard that marijuana can also lower your blood pressure after prolonged use, would I be lowering it to a dangerous level with two things lowering it? I don't need a lecture, I know that weed is illegal, and that it's bad for your lungs. I'm an adult, I make my own choices. And personally I'll take the possibility of lung cancer at 50+ years old over an hour and a half total of sleep, waking up 3+ times in the night, every night. Thank you.

My mother, British, tells of her mother having agoraphobic attacks in public and having to look after her and take her into hospitals. My mother is also mental herself, with agoraphobia. My eldest sister is similar but not to the same extent, and also very self-concious and paranoid. I and both my sisters have suffered/suffer depression. Ever since little I've always been shy, and that's all I thought it was even when growing up as a teen. But I know it's more than that and each day everything grows darker. My online friend from the UK (I live in Australia) is a psychologist and has identified me as having mild social anxiety disorder.
My problem is that I can't "talk". Everything I say I am self concious of. I struggle making conversation and exercise self backlash on every awkward occasion such as this. I worry when I am out and about that everybody in their cars is watching me, that people sitting down outside cafes are watching me, that people sitting in the seats behind me in buses are staring at me. I've had a few recent near-panic attacks on buses just because of this. I wish to enjoy life, talk freely, be social and in the end, be the most successful person out of my highschool class next year. I finished school last year in New Zealand and moved to Australia soon after, where my sisters live nearby. I had a bad time at school with bullying and not fitting in. I felt I was always judged so now I judge all of them and want to be the most successful our of them.
I am gay and out to most people. After I moved to Australia in February this year, I then moved to live independently in another city just a week ago. I also joined dating sites and found an amazing friend. We have dated twice, but he still considers us just dating and says a relationship would be weeks away - if ever. He is getting over a recent breakup. However, I continue to destroy my self esteem and hope by being paranoid that he is still having other dates on the side and probably won't choose me in the end, even though he is honest and well mannered and looking for long term like me. And he probably won't choose me. After all why should he? I've barely talked in person so we hardly know each other. And unless I get help it might always be that way. I don't want to tell him what is going on in my life as he might feel pressured and back out. But part of me does want him to understand because he might support me.
This dilemma of dating has made the high point in the last few days. All my worries about the uncertainty of our future collided with other worries last night, and I had an emotional breakdown. It involved me uncontrollably crying loudly for ages, feeling so alone, like there's no hope whatsoever and wanting to kill myself. During this I SMSd him and am now really scared he is disturbed by it, as he hardly ever contacts me now.
I can't afford a psychologist or anything. IS there any free services that give similar help for healing mental problems? I will not take meds as I only use alternative medicine which is also what I want to study next year. I would like it if somebody wants to message me and form a chat setup as well. I NEED HELP :'(

moreResolved Question: what's with middle-aged women and suddenly getting food allergies/into alternative medicine?!?
For reasons that I'm not quite sure about, when a woman hits 45 or so they start to imagine they have allergies. Or fibromyalgia. Or that they can't tolerate certain foods or things anymore. And then they start using alternative medicines and swearing by them, and getting really mad at doctors in general. What happens to these women? What's going on with them psychologically? My mom AND my MIL, not to mention many of my older colleagues, seem to believe in all kinds of holistic mumbo jumbo that they didn't believe in when they were younger (I mean, the moment a medicine is proven to work, it ceases to be "alternative", right?). These women are not dumb, in fact many of them are especially well-educated, but it doesn't seem to help once menopause sets in. It's like they wake up one day and decide they're allergic to everything under the sun and will bend over backwards to prove it, and will defy anyone who challenges them. They really mean it!
As an aside, I haven't changed my cooking since these mysterious "allergies" cropped up in mom and MIL. I've put all kinds of stuff into food that they claim to be allergic to and they've eaten it without a problem. Naturally I'd never dare if I didn't know them both very well and had seen them eating this stuff before. I mean, I believe that people are sometimes allergic, like nut allergies are really bad. But somehow it's never a nut allergy. It's always, "I have to eat only organic, fresh produce" or "I take St. Johns' wort every day" or "I have a gluten intolerance" (yeah right macaroni salad!). The other day my MIL claimed to be allergic to "scent!" what the heck is this all about? Why does that happen?
moreResolved Question: Why is Big Pharma blackmailing Greece withholding medicine supply for sick and needy?
Two Danish pharmaceutical companies, the Leo Pharma and Novo Nordisk have announced their blackmail efforts targeting Greece!
Leo Pharma is withholding distribution of its anti blood-clotting drug, sending Greece's pharmacies and hospitals into a panic and few days ago, the Novo Nordisk halted supplies of its insulin product, leaving Greece's diabetics with few options.
In doing this, Big Pharma does shows its true character.
But why?
In order to cut costs during its severe debt crisis, Greece had announced it would pay drug companies 25 percent less for their products!
This loss of profit was enough to convince some pharmaceutical companies supplying key drugs to the country to initiate their own medical blockade where they simply refuse to deliver any more medicines.
"Greek government officials believe the Danish companies are blackmailing Athens because they monopolise the market with certain key drugs. Stefanos Combinos, the director general of the economy ministry, told the BBC that Greece was one of the three most expensive countries in Europe for medicines. He said pharmaceutical companies had enjoyed great profits out of Greece over the decades and had an obligation to accept price reductions."
Isn’t that cute how Big Pharma Moloch shows its true character. When the profits are flowing and the companies making billions, they are your “best friend”. But when budgets get tight and everybody is asked to take a cut, the same “friend” betrays your country and its citizens,
With some sick game of withholding medicines in this thinly-veiled blackmail attempt to force your Nation to cough up more cash!!
I wonder how many people will die from lack of insulin drugs or anti blood clotting medicines because of this Big Pharma blackmail attempt?
This is what you get when you deal with the devil. You would have been better off favoring natural remedies over pharmaceuticals and the only pill to take, should be the one that makes us young again.
I wonder, how long it will take for Greek patients to simply turn to natural, alternative remedies that can accomplish the same thing as these drugs but without all the toxic side effects?
What action should we* take my beloved citizens of Ελληνική Δημοκρατία?

alternative including good dietary habits beyond the basics and every single branch of it when there are so many modalities and thousands of herbs. (Note--I have revised this question to be less offensive..I do want to know the answer)
I am wondering why they see things so black and while --good guys and bad guys and if they also abuse and insult people who disagree with them on anything in their real life and other online sites. Is this a personality disorder or something?
Do they just like to argue or are so egotistical they think they are always right. some of the worst insulters take on various topics as a skeptic from politics to paranormal to religion etc. and just put down everyone and argue and seem to delight in putting others down. Why? Were they bottlefeed or not held or something when they were little or is that just how they are.are they mad at the world. I have an uncle like that --hates everyone..says he is always right and everyone I know agrees he personally is a nutcase.
Would it scare you if people like this were really medical professionals?
are they really for real or is this a sick game they like to play? to upset others while entertaining themselves an laughing at their perceived cleverness...
Are they angry at smart people cause when they were little some smart kid got all the awards and ribbons while they just got dirty looks?
Did they try some ginkgo that failed causing them to be retained in school and lose their girlfriend or something and thus blame all alties and alternative medicine for the lost of their hopes and dreams?
.
do they think masquerading as nurses and doctors makes them appear smarter. I would rather be a maid or carhop (?) than a doctor myself. All the teachers told my brilliant 2nd grader to be a doctor and I discouraged him like crazy. Doctors have no time for a life and can't play their sick games on here 24-7...luckily he listened and became a computer geek instead. There is more than one way to use a brain.
Help me understand their psyches...!!
Do they hold their kids on a short lease? I wouldn't enjoy being their relatives as they might always be arguing and insulting me? Might be hard to deal with on a daily basis.
Do you think they are like this in their real life with people. when taught in kindergarten to be nice, were they the kids hitting other kids over the head with blocks and grabbing all the juice or something? Were the smarter skeptics the ones arguing evolution with the nuns at their school as first graders who reached under the veil, pulling the nun's hair if she didn't agree with evolution.
Or maybe they were the bullies knocking smaller kids into trash cans...did they then them aspirin and morphine for the pain? Maybe the doctors back then were giving them kickbacks for the needed surgeries that the kids they beat up had to get and they are still trying for some cash beyond their paper routes. Cause that be their motive?
what in the world was little rhi____a like or darling d__e or hickory DICKery sk___dic..(fill in the blank) like? Can you imagine..were they teacher's pet or bane of their day? Did they turn their teachers to drinking or wear out the principles paddle? Or were they the top of the class and well liked by all? What is your guess..
Inquiring minds want to know and none are more open to thought then the alties.
What is your take on all this:)
Basically---what is the deal with the skeptics..your take on all I said and your thoughts would be appreciated.
The question to clarify is..was it any of this or why are they like they are? what makes them want to be adversarial and insulting of people they disagree with.
Why can't they just state their opinions without insulting and why do they see things so bad and white with no gray?this should read
did they then GIVE them aspirin and morphine for the pain? (left out word give--sorry)I already saw their post but thanks for passing it along
moreResolved Question: do you respect a particular person in alternative med section. why?
I respect several alties but think skepcroc is a hero.
Why-- I think his name is a funny takeoff with a bite, he takes on the skeptics fearlessly, he asks and answers questions showing him to be a curious and kind individual, he has insight and he told me some enlightening things about the skeptics that I think were right on, and finally for his brilliant recommendation to block the skeptics. I cannot thank him enough for this. I did so and preemptively blocked off many insults and even those who said they did not deserve to be blocked subsequently proved to me they did by what they said. I have never regretted blocking these people.
I find blocking people who hate alternative medicine saves irritation down the road and less stress is, of course, good for one's health. so thanks for reducing my stress, Paddy, due to my following your apt suggestion. After all, in real life, we do not put ourselves in the position for jerks to upset and abuse us so why should we on here. They will say we are afraid to defend ourselves but who cares..we know the truth and in life that counts for a lot. It took me years of letting relatives and others upset me to learn their opinions are not as important as what I think of myself and those who care about me so now I avoid the jerks in my life as much as I can and focus on the good guys on my side. this has served to keep me from obsessing more on slights etc. so why not on here too? This is why I like skepcroc.
I am glad for the headaches he saved me so cheers to skepcroc and my question is who is one of your alt med heroes and why. (asking/answering this is not meant to say others are not just as great please understand)completely agree..I feel for the people wanting alternative health advise who are having to deal with the trolls turning this into a free for all and trying to lesson the truth of the good answers posted.
It is a shame as if someone is not that knowledgeable these people might scare them off from a truly good answers with their rants and thumbs down.
The only way currently is for people wanting alternative health info is to block these people presumptively.
That is one reason I did so I do not have to hear their crap when I ask a question. Unfortunately still run into them when I answer questions they are allowed to answer. Then they insult you and your answers.
I remember how great it was before they got on here. Today I got insulted several times and was glad I decided to cut back my time on here to attend to my life.
At least I left a body of answers on various health problems if people need to do a search, but many left and did not return due to these bulliesthey hurt both the seeker and the person trying to help answer the questions they posed, If a person asked if this bad advise, then they could legitimately give their views but when asked what herbs help this disease or something like that, they are not looking to be treated like an ignorant child, protected from alternative health, listen to internal battles between two groups etc
Often they do not answer the questions posed but rather use that as a backdrop to rant, push their unwanted views on the person asking the question, chat, insult and rant breaking all kinds of rules and stirring up dissension,
I am wondering if the best course in addition to blocking would not be to ignore them and as a group report all insults to any alties they slammed.
I have a website for YA alties where we can talk strategies..if you want, email me.
moreResolved Question: whats your opinion on alternative medicine?
why do people use it? because surely some of it just doesn't work, eg. homeopathy
and then some people say 'many more conventional medicines are derived from natural sources' which fair enough is true, eg. aspirin from willow, morphine from poppy seeds. but surely its better to use the convetional medicines simply because dose is much more controllable and things like drug interactions have actually been considered in depth.
any opinions welcomebut surely if complementary medicines or therapy did have a 50% success rate, then someone would have carried out some controlled medical trials or written an artical in a journal to bring it to the attention of the medical professionals.
also how could homeopathy work? because the solutions barely contain anything other than water, and the way drugs work is by acting on the receptors and enzymes and things in the body, and in homeopathy there's nothing there to act on those things. i mean theres nothing in the solutions so the bioavailability is basically going to be zero. so how can it have any pharmaceutical activity?
i'm actually really curious as to how and why these things might work.even if aspirin and morphine are chemically produced instead of being derived from their original natural sources, they are still the same compound as found in the willow bark and poppy seeds. also you can't say they cause side effects because they are chemicals, because they're still chemicals when in the natural plant form. they only cause side effects because of the increased concentration.
Its like when people say they only eat organic food, when they mean food grown free from pesticides and things. Because all food is chemically organic. (except salt, thats NaCl )

moreResolved Question: Does the scientific explanation of "near death" experiences dispel the "god" exists argument?
The mystery of why people 'brought back from the dead' report powerful spiritual experiences may have a biological explanation, according to experts.
Researchers who studied brainwaves of dying patients, found there was a surge of electrical activity in their brains just moments before their lives ended.
The doctors from George Washington University medical centre in Washington believe this surge may be the cause of near-death experiences, where patients see themselves walking towards a bright light or floating outside their bodies.
Near-death experiences may be caused by a surge of electrical activity in the brain moments before death. Many patients who experience these sensations believe they are having a religious vision and treat it as confirmation of an afterlife. Some revived patients even reported seeing religious figures such as Jesus, Muhammad or Krishna. Others said they felt suffused with a sense of peace as they start to walk into a light-filled tunnel. However, the intensive care doctors at George Washington have an alternative biological explanation, which has been published in the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
A team led by Dr Lakhmir Chawla used an electroencephalograph (EEG), a device that measures brain activity, in seven terminally ill people to provide pain-relieving sedation. Dr Chawla noticed moments before death patients experienced a burst of brainwave activity that lasted from 30 seconds to three minutes. The activity was similar to that measured in fully conscious people. Soon after the surge the patients were declared dead. 'We think the near-death experiences could be caused by a surge of electrical energy released as the brain runs out of oxygen,' Dr Chawla told The Times. 'As blood flow slows down and oxygen levels fall, the brain cells fire one last electrical impulse. It starts in one part of the brain and spreads in a cascade and this may give people vivid mental sensations.'
He added that he had seen the same phenomenon in around 50 other patients. However, Sam Parnia, leader of the Awareness During Resusciation study in the UK, said Dr Chawla's conclusions should be treated with caution. Dr Parnia said there was no proof that the electrical surge is linked to near death experiences as all the patients died.
His team are currently interviewing 700 Britons who have been brought back to life after cardiac arrests to study the mental consequences of the experience. 'We see death as a moment, but actually it is a process and one which modern medicine can often reverse,' he said. Near death experiences have been found to have a positive effect on the majority of patients, whatever their cause.
A Dutch study published in The Lancet in 2001 found around one in five cardiac arrest victims underwent a near-death experience. They found these patients tended to feel happier, more altruistic and less afraid of death later on.

moreResolved Question: How do I take raw emotions and feelings and turn them into some sort of story?
I've had the weirdest time lately. I'm a 16 year old guy and recently got put on Adderall for ADD, which no one noticed until I did when I was just turning 16. Late-term diagnosis. Because of it, my mind is taking the full brunt of the medication. Children are given it when they are young, so they don't really know any different state of mind. My head has had the chance to, and is FREAKING. But one side effect (of several) seems to be my emotions are stronger. I don't know how, but my reactions (pain, anger, joy, etc) are amplified. One moment I'll be grinning at the world, the next I'm close to throwing my annoying little brother through the door... of the CAR. But I've noticed that this new amplification makes me much more sensitive to things such as music. I've started listening to everything. I used to listen only to Nu Metal, alternative, classic rock and such.
Now I've expanded into enjoying hard rock, some lighter heavy metal (didn't exactly plan for the double crossing out, sorry lol), classic, hip hop, rap, orchestra and pretty much everything else. And I ended up watching the trailer for 9 one morning, with the song Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria playing in the background. It was the first time I'd watched the trailer or heard the song since the medicine. For some reason the big ending of the song stuck in my head all day. That day in Art class I was pretending to read again (I hate reading sessions. The books are always done before I am lol) and, since I couldn't get the music out of my head, I went ahead and let my head go through it without restraint. Now that I focused on it, I got this feeling of kind of being epic, the next level, insane but was structured, if only strangely. It was crazier than a movie by Tim Burton starring Johnny Depp and Chris Tucker. While I felt those emotions, a feeling kind of like a theme, or the 'feeling' of it was immense. Kind of like the feeling of hugeness, and connectedness and the feeling of your senses being used in a new way that I got, and I think most of you got, when I watched Avatar 3D for the first time. But this feeling was epic, final, exciting, earth changing, almost unexplainable.
When I completely let my imagination flow with the music, I caught some images that my imagination generated to accompany the feeling and the music. More like actions, rather than images actually. I've had 7 years in martial arts, and was in XMA (extreme martial arts) with a group of friends when I was a kid. It resulted in some rather unbelievable... sparring matches, I guess lol. I have many memories of back then. Of when my speed and strength were growing, and seemed never able to stop or slow down. The memory of being nearly unbeatable, I couldn't be hurt. I used to not think twice about jumping off the roof of the school back then- 25 feet in the air. I was doing back flips and front flips and b-twists and handstands, and the feeling of being stronger than gravity was imprinted on my memories. I still have that feeling occasionally, even though I've lost most of my flexibility, skill, power, etc. You know how your mind supposedly makes dreams out of everything we've seen during the day? It seems my imagination combined my strongest feelings and emotions into one that time. I couldn't entirely see the movements or anything, but I got the impression, the feeling of the moves, of the people involved. I've had multiple experiences of this 'epic' feeling since I started taking Adderall (all involved some other form of media- sitting in church, and my mind turns to the movie Legion and that great ending fight, and those feelings return, etc).
I don't know why, but I feel like I have to write it down. In something, just at least to never forget it, and keep it with me. But I'm not sure what to do. Make it into some sort of story? I'm not even sure how to turn raw emotions and feelings into a story, or anything like that. Any help, please!!??!?!!?!??!?!?!?Maybe I should clarify. The XMA part in all of this is an example of how I understand it. I can understand the incredibly complex, dynamic and sometimes self-contradicting of the conflict. The emotion combines with this, not just in some sort of climax resolution fight thing but in the way the, I guess I should call it story, goes. How it twists and flips more complexly than most people I know could easily understand.
moreResolved Question: Why do people bother improving a flawed existence?
Whether you are religious person or not, there is no denying the fact that our existence is flawed. Despite advances in technology, medicine, science; heck, even philosophy, our freedoms are being bought out by consumerism (ironically the foundation of capitalism). Take for example, with recent Facebook uproar, we are realizing how much our privacy is at risk just by being connected to the internet, a *necessity* in this day and age. I suppose the point I'm getting at is there isn't really any alternative available to many of us. Our morals, our thoughts, our lives, are being bought out by greed, vanity and lust. The news and media flood our lives with this shallow nonsense, while silence and tranquility are almost impossible to come by. 95% of the jobs out there only fuel this corrupt existence even more. Thus, I've come to the conclusion that this temporary, ideally inferior, existence is being taken too seriously by the majority of the population, in the fact that many of us, although we may not want to admit it, center our lives around the media, pop culture, politics, consumerism, and other hooks that can only benefit our current existence. On the other hand, many people devote their entire lives to improving this temporary transitional state, but why? Sure, it is in good faith and eases the suffering of our race, but if the general populace could truly see how flawed this existence was, then they might truly take things such as religion and moral decency more seriously. What are your thoughts?By "we" and "our" I'm collectively referring to the human race.

Its a four page report,,,,What spelling/gramatic changes need to be made??? Is it good and well written? What would you give me and why?
When I graduate from Colleton County High School, I plan on attending Tennessee State University to obtain my Organic Chemistry and Pre-Medical Science bachelor’s degree. Then I plan to go to Vanderbilt School of Medicine to become a Cardiologist. A Cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in the heart. There are many different types of Cardiologist. They include: Non-Invasive Cardiologist, Invasive Cardiologist, Interventional Cardiologist, Cardiac Electro physiologist (EP), and Cardiac Surgeon. I plan on pursuing a profession as a Cardiac Surgeon.
In order to become a Cardiac Surgeon you have to have a Bachelors degree in science (B.S.) and pass the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) to gain entry into a Medical School. The four years in medical school will be divided between two years in the class and two years undergoing Internships/Residency. Medical procedures, Medical terminology, and judgment are all covered in Medical School. Then to graduate Medical School you must take and pass the exit exam through American Board of Internal Medicine. Once you pass the exit exam you will attend approximately eight years of residency. This will include patient prep, vascular access, Coronary access, and surgeries. Then you have 2 years of fellowship. Fellowship is advanced training in the medical field you intend on pursuing.
A Cardiac Surgeon must always be: organized, detailed, friendly, patient, have great motor skills, punctual, able to be on call, and willing to work forty- sixty hours per week. They may also have an assigned uniform by their hospital, office, or other employer. This uniform will be either a scrub or solid color cloth pants and shirt. You will also be required to where close toed shoes. Finally, during surgery you will have to where a Medicated dust masks to protect yourself as well as the patient. Since you will be constantly around patients and your co-workers is important to have good manners and carry yourself professionally. Being able to communicate to patients on a professional but understandable level is critical to this job. This can often be difficult but is necessary so patients can understand what is happening and how it can be cured.
Non-Invasive Cardiologist, Invasive Cardiologist, Interventional Cardiologist, Cardiac Electro physiologist (EP), and Cardiac Surgeon are the main types of heart doctors. All Cardiologists are important and in some way linked to one another. The main difference between them all is advanced training to do different surgeries and treatments.
A Non- Invasive Cardiologist does not do surgeries. On the contrary they try to prevent patients from having to get heart surgery. They will perform test to identify the hearts problem; if there problem can be cured without surgery they will prescribe medicines, diets, or alternative treatment methods. If it can’t, Non-Invasive Cardiologist will refer the patients to a an invasive Cardiologist or Cardiac Electro physiologist (EP)
An Invasive Cardiologist uses diagnostic and therapeutic tools that are inserted directly in to the patient’s heart to correct heart disease. They also perform minor surgeries such as using stents to open clogged arteries. For bigger problems they will refer them to Interventional Cardiologists, Cardiac Electro physiologist (EP), or cardiac Surgeons.
Interventional Cardiologist primarily deals with structural heart disease. Cardiac Catheterizations are a common procedure done by Interventional Cardiologists. Cardiac Catheterizations is when they insert instruments into a person’s heart to check how well it’s pumping. They also may do Balloon Angioplasty to open blockages with stents. When dealing with Interventional Cardiology you don’t have to deal with scar and intense pain.
Next, Cardiac Electro physiologist (EP) uses bio-electrical impulses to control the pace of one’s heart. If one’s heart isn’t functioning properly it can cause a heart arrhythmia which is potentially deadly. Now with the founding of pacemakers this with medication and drug therapy helps with the problem.
Lastly, Cardiac Surgeons perform major Cardiac surgeries on the heart and major blood vessels. Cardiac Surgeons open the chest and perform surgeries directly on the heart. There job is very rewarding when they can see a patient have an improved quality of life and regain mobility; but on the other hand there is a risk of an unsuccessful surgery so it can also be very upsetting .
Cardiac Surgeons perform a wide array of heart surgeries. Coronary Artery Bypass, Angioplasty, Heart Valve Surgery, and Heart Transplant are a few of the many surgeries performed by Cardiac Surgeons.
Coronary Artery Bypass (heart bypass) is a surgery done with your heart stopped. It uses one to five blood vessels contingent upon how many blockages there are to bypass my paper was to long...its a four page double spaced esssay
moreResolved Question: Why does mainstream medicine feel threatened, when patients are truly feeling better?
Disclaimer:
It's not my intent to bash the entire medical community here. There are honorable doctors who truly care and don't see each patient as a paycheck. But sadly, they are in the minority.
=======================================
More and more patients are getting fired by their family doctors promptly after they dared to tell them how better they feel and why – after the treatment and botanical remedies from the Naturopathic Doctor across the street.
I am talking about patients who wasted year after year waiting for the cure and finally god tired of wasting money on expensive prescription drugs which aren't helping.
I am talking about the brave and smart ones who crossed the floor and went to the Alternative Doctor in search for better health.
Why they did it? It is the result of millions of people being stuck on what is called the "white coat treadmill."
That's when you go to the doctor for a problem and get a prescription. But then the drug either causes side effects or stops working (or both), so you go back to the doctor and get another prescription. But then that drug causes side effects or stops working, so you go back to the doctor and get yet another prescription and another and another.
When patients on the “white coat treadmill” getting drug after drug, never feeling better or even getting worse from side effects, decide it's the time to try something else – the lighting comes down from blue sky.
It has the shape of your other time friendly GP ordering you out of his practice for ever.
Like the mighty Creator punishing Adam & Eve for Original Sin. The forbidden fruit in Eden was a Naturopathic remedy after all – so there is some resemblance.
But why the doctors get threatened?
Is it perhaps that all they can see is the few thousand dollars less in a year to help them keep and finance their extravagant lifestyle?

There seems to be a lot of evidence that it works and the science makes sense, apparently it has little or no side effects. Some Medical Doctors do offer it but it seems its always in an "alternative medicine" practice. Why do hospitals not offer this treatment? Why is it not taken seriously?
moreResolved Question: Help! Experience with anorexia?
Is anyone here experiencing anorexia, or have you gone through it before?
Both my twin sister and me used to be about 30 lbs underweight from overexercising/undereating. Within a few months it was pretty easy for me to gain the weight back, I'm pretty flexible with myself. But for my sister its a little bit different
For some reason she does not like to eat food! (She doesn't think she's fat). Honestly she has a perfect diet (lots of vegetables, coconut oil, fresh meat, fruits), but the amount she eats is minimized to about 500 calories a day.
We tried regular doctors, alternative medicine doctors, counselors, nothing is working.. Not only has she stopped exercising, but the doctor said that her body is eating itself (the brain is deteriorating), which is why she says things that don't quite make sense and she acts really strange.
Has anyone gone through this before? I've tried to understand it but I just can't. Maybe she just went insane. I miss my sister (and my running partner!) a lot and I just want her to act like a normal person again.

I am considering studying medicine but I'm confused about which type of medical school I should pursue. I have been doing Tai Chi for many years and I'm a believer in things like massage therapy, acupuncture, natural herbs, yoga, etc. However I also appreciate the scientific method and allopathic medicine which is why I am considering a traditional MD school. If I go to such a school rather than the local naturopathic and chinese medicine school, will I be limited in my career to study these alternative medicines? What are my options to gain the best of both worlds? I would like to study many different disciplines to help my patients. Alternately, if I go to naturopathic, chinese or ostopathic medical school how will this limit my understanding of anatomy, chemical medicines, or my credentials to get employment as a doctor? Please elaborate on which of these disciplines you think are BS. Specifically for yoga or Tai Chi, even if you think chi or what some call "vital energy" doesn't exist, do you still not think it is befinical to do meditative exercizes, controlled breathing, or cardiovascular exercize doing Tai Chi, etc.
moreResolved Question: Why won't my back pain stop? It has been over a year, is this pain forever now? Please see MRI below..?
This injury happened while horse riding 16 months ago. I had never had back pain before. I was sitting to a very fast trot, but had not ridden in a long time and didn't know that this horse could not get into a canter, as it's saddle was too small. It was very jarring, as I am heavy chested. Suddenly I felt a sharp pain like I had been cut in 2, through the waist. Since then the upper back, at (thoracic) T10 especially hurts. Though the more I do, the more different places on my back hurt. I didn't seek medical help for 6 months, then was finally given MRI.
I started physical therapy 3 months ago. I haven't done the exercises as often as I should, but I still can't believe that the pain is as bad, as it was a year ago. If I stand, sit, or walk for any length of time, or lift, I stay in pain for several hours to several days.
The 3 middle toes on both feet get numb, if I sit still for long.
I am treating pain lightly with ibuprofen, as I take several other meds and don't like mixing, any more than I have to.
I am 57 and don't want to be defeated by this. What should I do? Any expert, or personal experience, or alternative medicine opinion is appreciated.
I am longing to horse back ride again, garden, walk dogs, etc. Please help, if you can...Thank you.
MRI = L2/3; minimal disc bulge +mild facet hypertrophy + minimal stenosis. L 3/4; minimal disc bulge + moderate mild/moderate "to that are Rowe's is greater on right. (My physical therapist said that "Rowes" must be a mis-quote) Minimal stenosis". L 4/5; minimal disc bulge. Moderate facet arthrosis. Mild foramina narrowing. L5-S1; mild disc bulge. Moderate facet arthrosis. Disc bulges/small protrusions w/ minimal osteophyte formation at T 5/6, T 6/7, T 7/8,T 8/9, T 9/10.
Schmorl's node + associated degenerative changes superior endplate T 10.
I had no back pain ever, before this fateful horse ride, even though I would often garden for several hours, until exhaustion.
Please help, if you can. Thanks!Hi again. Only the first 5 words of KARISA's answer came through. Karisa, if you read this, would you please re-send me your answer? Thanks!Hi. The issue is my back pain. I am pretty sure that the 3 numb toes on each foot is a nerve implication, from the injury, as that is when it started and is not from diabetes. My doctor said that it is consistent with particular nerves in your legs. I only get it when I sit for awhile and pressure is put on the backs of my legs. The persistent debilitating upper back pain is what my question concerns. Thanks. My physical therapist pushed on my upper back, between mid to upper shoulder blades, 2 weeks ago and the pain from that 'adjustment' has not stopped. Usually his adjustments, just hurt for 2 or 3 days. He often just pushes on a small tender spot and that makes it feel better. Each time he does these major, larger area pushes, I hurt for a while. This one is the worst ever. I like and trust this man, but I think he over did it this time! This is hard. I keep looking at horses and now I don't know if I can really ever ride again. (now 16 months since the injury...Argh!)
moreResolved Question: If science cannot understand what causes a simple cold then why?
Do doctors and medical personnel that lurk in the shadows of this section think they know all there is about alternative medicine. I mean they can't even cure the common cold and never tell you how you can improve your immune system, so that your body will be strong enough to fight off these diseases. Can it be that if they were to give you this info they would lose repeat customers and a whole lot of money? Eat right, Excercise and take needed supplements that have been depleted in our food by over farming and you will be strong as a horse! What's your thoughts on this subject? That's the problem with the so called medical professionals in this section. All of these answers that were given in fine detail with countless years of education and they haven't found a cure to protect us from them. Doctors are the 3rd leading cause of death in America. And I thought they were here to help us. Who knows? I don't know of one person that died last year taking alternative meds. And you can take that to the bank DARLING!
moreResolved Question: do you think it is good or right that doctors are using drugs for off the label uses they weren't designed for?
I just heard on the radio that an anti-psychotic drugs was given to people who did not have schizophrenia or bipolar and that the drug is thought to cause diabetes..wtf?
these drugs have serious side effects...did the doctors even inform the people what the drug was supposed to be used for..I bet not.
It says they have had to play the largest off label settlement ever for encouraging doctors to do this.
http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=ytff1-&p=antipsychotic+drugs+diabetes+off+the+label+use
Do you think doctors should also be charged so they stop doing this. I know a doctor did that to me once and I later found out there was a class action lawsuit of people it harmed. I immediately weaned off it myself and then told her I was not taking i anymore. I have never taken a drug from this doctor since. to be honest, I think she lied to me in telling me why she was prescribing it too, I am glad I quit going to her.
What is your opinion on any of this.
Isn't the millions they make on its approved uses enough...we know they only make drugs for illnesses they can make money on and have enough people with that illness to make it worth their while. I think they need to remove the profit motive on drugs or rather hold it to a set amount, go after them as hard as they do people practicing alternative medicine with its battering rams and machine gun raids as this could be more dangerous than some guy dispensing herbs and nutrition and exercise and hydrotherapy certainly as most herbs are quite safe with few side effects.\
Maybe also not make them spend billions to get their exclusive patents so they don't feel they have to recoup multiple times with things like this with nary a care for the people's health who take them..if they are one of the unfortunates to get some of these rare and very serious side effects, who told the drug makers that they have the right to put people in harm's way for money.
Pretty sure the skeptics all think this is fine (unless it is them that is harmed I guess).

Ditto with somebody who claims they have been miraculously cured of an illness through an as yet unproven conventional treatment, will you believe it ? moreResolved Question: ANOTHER COLLEGE PAPER??? Why yes indeed it is! Would you please mind helping me?
I'm writing a business proposal for a place I'm interning at, and that is to be reviewed by a professor. It's basically regarding a free online database for alternative and/or medicine. In order for it to be free, we need to make money off of advertisers. Who would be good businesses to talk to about paying to advertise on our website?
There is a few criteria:
1. They should be small local businesses that generally cater to sustainable living, such as fair trade products, hand-made crafts, family-owned restaurants, and food co-ops.
2. If they are big business ideas, then they should hopefully be somewhat in sync with the basic philosophy of economic equity and sustainability. We want more than anything to help promote small businesses, especially during these economic times, but it wouldn't hurt to have a few large ones on there too.
We also would like any advertisers to be unconnected with pharmaceutical companies, if possible.
Just respond to this question with ideas, or shoot me an email if you have further questions or wish to share information that you don't want posted on here.Sorry, I meant it's a "free online database for alternative and/or HOLISTIC medicine."

moreResolved Question: What's the point of life?
Hello i went from being depressed to being normal to being depressed, but one thing keeps bugging me... whatever i do, there is no answer to that question! So? Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, Taoism, Hedonism, anything you offer, does it have an everlasting meaning?
We are born into an unfathomable existence, on a tiny patch of space called earth that is itself a speck of dust in the galaxy that is a speck of dust in the infinite universe, and not only that, but during your entire lifetspan, you will die on an even smaller patch of space on THAT Earth.
Anyone else thinks human being are just limited and death is "unfair"? Religious people, what's the point of "Heaven", "Hell" or "Brahman" or any other mind-concoctions? That's the one thing I never really got. I don't want to be reincarnated or reunite with any Brahman, i don't want to live a blissful existence that is in itself meaningless (isn't it bound to get repetitive as well or the catch-22 is that i'll experience incessant eternal orgasms and ergo will not have time to consider the meaninglessness of it all?), I have no desire to commit to a life of hedonism here cause that is boring as well.
So... since life is an inexplicable mystery and a torture chamber, how cruel is that we are alive? The more I think of it, the more I realize that religion does not bring meaning to life but rather, further consolidates the nihilistic meaninglessness of it all!, did it ever happen, that a guy hates Atheism as much as he hates Religion, but reaches that conclusion since in the face of one-sideness and daily monotony of life, there is nothing better to do?
In short terms, how is it possible for someone like me (don't know if there are any others) to live if two of the biggest alternatives in the world (Atheism, Theism and everything inbetween) are not satisfactory?
So if I don't belong to any category, then whats the point of waking up every morning? From that point on, it seems as suicide is the best way to cork out your brain, no responsibility, no depression, no aspirations, worries or anything else, isn't that the perfect drug?
How vain it all is. Every human category. Love, Sex, Art, etc etc. People getting fatter, people getting leaner, hunks & jocks vs pickup artists and the usual joes..., movies, learning... working... why? who asked that "something" to bring me and countless others who wondered about the same question to to that existence? Why did I have to be coaxed? Why not just give it all to us at the outset, at least in that case the meaninglessness could be worth something until you're dead? Why does medicine exist, why do our bodies fail, why is there anything at all, and that magical "anything" created a world that is so far away from being "fun"? Am I ever gonna get the answer to that or should I, as had been advised here countless times, "wizen up" and self-indulge in the mystery? but what would be the point of that?
Guys, do u understand what i'm trying to say here? Without any appeal to ignorance or pity, why is it that no matter how good you try to think the world is, how optimistic everything is and how purposeful the world is, how everything is going according to plan, how you're gonna end up being successful, with a wonderful career and a great family, how "good" people are and how much happiness you wish everyone would be showered with - the thoughts you try to nail into your brain, the mental masturbation of having to wake up everyday to the same "existence" seem like such an unenticing prospect? (no matter how well-of and high-rolling you are)
Is suicide really the only option here? Why are the suicide rates so high pretty much in every developed country (Russia, Japan, US, etc)if everyone else gets such an immense kick out of life?
p.s
oh and btw, depression has nothing to do with me writing this post right now. that has been my opinion for a long time, but i've desperately grappled with myself trying to conceal it. Can't do that anymore. Could we please discuss this issue refraining from medical advices or any of the other trite banalities that i've already googled the net for? Philosophically speaking, what's the other emergency exists other than Religion or lack of it.
moreResolved Question: why is the alternative medicine section used as the drug section for illegal (and occasionally legal) drug?
questions. this is ridiculous.
Went to answer some questions on alternative health and the ENTIRE first page is drug questions except for ONE post about "ants took my virginity):) Every single question was on drug use but the strange one.
What can we do about this takeover of this section?
How can we get yahoo answers to make a category for legal drugs and they can put the illegal questions there along with drug questions instead of here
Does this irritate you and how can we get yahoo answers to open a new category for drugs under the health category.oh my error I did see in recheking one question on alternative health in the entire page besides the ants at the picnic one.if you have yet to see one question on illegal drugs, then all that pot smoking has apparently made you blind.
It is loaded with them.
I am into health not wrecking it with drugs. I suggest a better section to use would be general health questions as many of these question pertain to some fear aspect and this would be a legitimate health concern so other health would be the correct section.
though one might say marijuana could fit here as it is a natural herb, for the most part these things are not thiungs that fiyt under alternative health.
Also noone offered any solution for getting ya to open up a medicine/drug section. Doctors would be better to answer some of these questions than people who frequent alternative health and the people who are not doctors but drug users themselves could all go to that section if yahoo answers opened one.
first it was you guys and then the skeptics and this is irritatingand since when are illegal drugs medicine btwto the daisy icon..if you look at what I wrote I said pot is an herb. I do think it has medical properties and perhaps other herbs as well; however, it is not legal and this site is doing a disservice imo to people to let them use this forum as a way to get advise on the use of them as I bet most of these people are young and some underage.
These are other than marijuana which is certified for medical use not legal substances nor considered medicines even though some of the ones made form plants have I am sure medicinal properties as most plants do; however, I am quite sure the alt med proponents see quite a difference from someone asking about using marijuana for cancer and the way most of the questions on this forum are which is not using in a medical way nor for the most part healthy to do, I am stunned there are not more people supporting that this is inappropriate but then I guess the drug users on here outnumber by far both the alt med people and the skeptics.
I wish thattptb at yahoo answer would open a new segment called drugs for you guys. Daisy, you are just rationalizing it as pretty much noone asking this quantity of continual drug questions is using it for antibiotics or cluster headaches. I would not have a problem with legitimate use of herbs for real medical reason on here but this is not what is taking place in this sickening takeover of this section by a bunch of drug users. It is sickening that YA allows this in light of all the minors on here..just disgusting.
moreResolved Question: I really don't like these thoughts I'm having about myself, but they feel so true?
Hi, I'm 28.
I had a girlfriend from I was 21 to 25, and I had basically settled with the thought that I was gonna marry her one day. We lived together and had a dog. It was dead serious. She was smart, funny, pretty, alternative and pretty much everything I wanted. But it ended because we had to relocate to different places, but we never really broke up. But of course it's over now, it's been 3 years of just seeing each other like once or twice a year.
Now as time has past, I'm realizing that maybe it wasn't the healthiest of relationships, cause it completely destroyed my confidence long before it ended...in general it felt like a constant fight to keep someone who was better than me. I don't know if that was entirely her fault, or if I did it to myself, knowing that I was the luckier one in the relationship. I guess she wasn't that nice to me either, but at least she wasn't boring.
But now I'm completely stuck such high standards that it can never work out. The only girls I am attracted to are the ones that are above my league. If only I had the confidence to pull it off, but like I said my confidence has hit rock bottom.
I have also lost what I had of looks. 5 years ago my looks never got in my way and until recently I still thought I was maybe a 6 on a scale to 10. But now I have on two occasions (out of two) gotten rejected online because of my looks.
I also think maybe people think I'm creepy. At least I feel creepy, cause I'm lonely and contact-seeking. Women can smell that from miles off. I always look around me, always seeking contact and I think my body-language is somewhat creepy and looser-like. Someone said that once too, that I look contact-seeking.
So basically my looks suck, my personality sucks, my self-esteem sucks and my standards are way too high and I compare everyone to her.
What the hell can I do to break out of this vicious cycle? I work out several times a week, eat healthy most of the time, I try to be social and hang out with friends but I just never seem to get rid of this melancholy that's slowly killing me.
It's not like I can convince myself otherwise either, cause I know I am right. I am a realist, I know how biology works and how everything in life is a competition, including relationships. I also know that my thoughts about myself are somewhat close to the truth. Im not saying I can't become a better person, but it's really hard to do that when everything feels so hopeless.
So how can I possibly snap out of this? I don't think I can take much longer in this state of mind. I get nothing done, I withdraw from my friends cause I know I'm pathetic, and I have suicidal thoughts every day
I don't think medicines can help me, cause it's not like I don't know why I feel this way. And it's not like I'm wrong either.
moreResolved Question: Should alternative medicine be brought under mainstream regulation?
"Quacks fly in all directions as alternative medicine regulation fails: As panic and confusion spread among the practitioners of alternative medicine, Martin Robbins calls for the industry's products and practices to be brought under mainstream medical regulations"
"Why is there a need for an alternative medicine regulator in the first place? This question has never been answered satisfactorily. Either a product is a medicine, in which case it should be allowed to make health claims and be regulated as a medicine by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), or it is not, in which case it shouldn't be allowed to make health claims and should be regulated in the same way as, say, a packet of Tic-Tacs."
http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/apr/16/quacks-alternative-medicine-regulation
Comments?'Know The Cause', I'd rather you answer the question please. I want intelligent feedback.Mr E: I guess you are not across the Simon Singh/British Chiropractic Association issue. The problem there is that chiropractor members of the self regulating organisation have been making bogus claims in their marketing about being able to heal childhood diseases, like asthma. This is a good example of a requirement for proper regulation. Thanks to Simon and others, one out of four chiropractors are now under investigation in the UK.Aristo, thanks for the answer, but clearly alt med is unable to regulate itself in terms of its lack of efficacy, RCTs, safety, bogus claims and products, etc. So who should be policing all these things? So far the consumer only have the skeptics on their side.Lightning: I think you are trying to make individual cases to muddy the waters. Surely if alt med in general is making health claims, then in the public’s interest they should be governed by the same general regulation as mainstream medicine, which also makes health claims? And I’m sure osteopaths, if they meet the proper criteria could be represented in the regulatory authority.
Fallacies and self contradictions aside, thanks for the detailed answer.
But you lost at me at ‘reductionist’ You are now entering woo territory.
And the sexism was uncalled for, btw.Rhianna, "It must be remembered that not all herbals will be effective, many conventional drugs are put through testing, only a handful make it." Good point.
