Shot can be effective therapy for arthritic knee
I have arthritis in one of my knees. The pain has been steadily worsening and has forced me to stop many of my activities. My doctor recommended a steroid shot. This makes me nervous. People always tell me that these shots are painful and possibly dangerous. What do you think?
Cortisone or corticosteroid injections can be a very effective and safe treatment option for many different musculoskeletal problems.
These injections often are part of a treatment plan that includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, activity modification and exercise rehabilitation. In many cases, corticosteroid injections are given only after other treatment options have failed.
Corticosteroids help decrease inflammation, swelling, tenderness and pain. There are many different corticosteroid preparations available for injection.
